This Has Been Amazing Me As Well

Donald Trump's Restraint Is a Sight to Behold — And It's Driving the Dems Mad

How many times have you heard people say that Donald Trump can be his own worst enemy? How many times have you thought that he could do so much more good if he didn’t get in his own way?

Or, as Ben Domenech puts it at Spectator World, “The attitude is ubiquitous among some portions of the president’s base: they just think he’d be better off if he could focus and not give Democrats so much material. But because this hypothetical has never emerged, we never really got to find out if it was true — until now.”
For the last few weeks, we’ve largely seen that wish come true. The debate with Joe Biden handed Trump every opportunity to gloat or run his mouth on a silver platter. He probably has countless nicknames for Biden that he could have trotted out. But he didn’t.
The Trump we’ve seen these last few weeks is a more restrained man. It’s hard to know what to make of it as a conservative, so imagine how the left is struggling with a disciplined Trump.

I confess that Trump since the debate has been a wonder to behold. He's letting the Dems tear themselves apart without giving the press something else (him) to focus on. I'm amazed, and I confess

The First Forged In Fire Champion

Archaeologists Find 3,000-Year-Old Sword So Well Preserved It ‘Almost Still Shines’

A rare sight greeted archaeologists excavating a gravesite in the southern Bavarian town of Nördlingen last week: Nestled near the grave’s occupants was a 3,000-year-old sword.
The weapon barely shows its age. It has remained so well-preserved that it “almost still shines,” says Bavaria's State Office for Monument Protection in a statement, per Google Translate.
The weapon sports an octagonal bronze hilt that was cast over the blade, which few smiths were skilled enough to make at the time, according to Live Science’s Laura Geggel. Only two manufacturing regions were known to have made swords of this kind: one near the excavation site in southern Germany, and the other in northern Germany and Denmark.

The sword shows no wear and tear indicating use in battle, but archaeologists say “its center of gravity made it suitable for use as a real weapon, and it was capable of being used to slash opponents,” reports Newsweek’s Jess Thomson.
Bronze swords first emerged around 1600 B.C.E. and were used until roughly 600 C.E., as Smithsonian magazine’s Alex Fox wrote in 2020. Researchers say that the Bavarian artifact dates to the end of the 14th century B.C.E.

And that's a title that comes with a check for $10,000.

Smoking The Good Stuff

1 In 5 Auto Accident Deaths Now Involves Marijuana Use

Simply put, increased marijuana use has led to significantly more Americans being killed on our nation’s roads — as people are not only driving while stoned but driving while stoned and drunk. As we approach the week of July 4, when deaths from impaired driving tend to peak, Americans might want to ask themselves whether this is a price worth paying and what they’re getting in return.

A recent study published in the American Journal of Public Health — and conducted by scholars at Boston Medical Center, Boston University, and the University of Victoria — found that the percentage of car crash deaths in America that involved marijuana has skyrocketed since 2000. The percentage of car crash deaths involving cannabis alone rose from 4.2 percent in 2000 to 11.2 percent in 2018. Over that same span, the percentage of car crash deaths involving cannabis and alcohol together rose from 4.8 to 10.3 percent. So the total percentage of car crash deaths involving cannabis, either with or without alcohol, rose from 9.0 percent in 2000 to 21.5 percent in 2018 — to more than a fifth of all car crash deaths in America.

Is it just me, or does anyone else notice the difference in smell between modern weed and what we had back in the 80s? I remember 80s weed as smelling sweet, while the stuff today smells like someone is roasting dead skunks.

How divorce never ends

All of this is to say something you don’t hear that often: divorce will affect your kids for the rest of their lives, well into adulthood. They will have split holidays and summers. They will have stepparents. Their kids will have step-grandparents. Whatever inheritance they would have been entitled to is often being divvied up with other spouses and their kids. More important than the money, however, is the attention they’ll never get because their parents are dating or remarrying or whatever. They will only be with one parent half of the year — if they’re lucky: we only saw my dad twice a year. They will have to choose who gets Christmas, forever. Or they will be bouncing around at holiday time with their kids, just like the old days.
I know that in many instances — for example, when there is abuse — divorce is necessary. Yet so often it feels like two people are just “over it” and want to move on with their lives and be single again instead of doing whatever it takes to make it work for the kids. People don’t want to hear this because it makes them feel bad about their decisions. Divorce sucks. It never ends — and it should be a last resort.

No-fault divorce was one of the most insidious tools of the anti-family left, and yet nobody ever discusses it as such. And hey, I had a practice wife before I met my real one, so I'm not throwing any stones, but I'm older and wiser now and I can recognize it for what it is.

Not sure if that is true, but the "weed" of today is very concentrated. Alcohol also kills brain cells, my guess, at a much lower rate than the powerful "weed" of today.

I'm the last person to say couples ought to stay married no matter what the circumstances. The results of my mom and dad not getting divorced probably would have been worse than what actually happened, and that was without abuse or anything of the sort.

84 A field in Hambleden, Buckinghamshire, located in southeast England hides something considered extremely heinous to us today but completely normal to the ancient Romans who settled the area 2,000 years ago. At Yewden Villa, an archaeologist uncovered the bones of 97 infants in a mass grave, the most substantial discovery of its kind found at a Romano-British site. Originally thought to be a site of ritual infanticide, recent studies of the site have raised more questions than answers. An archaeologist who led the most recent investigation of the site thinks there was a brothel there, which explains the presence of the infant’s bones; others aren’t so sure. [...]

Using the infanticide theory as the only support for the presence of a brothel is a hasty judgment, especially since none of the structures at Yewden Villa show any of the standard markers for being a brothel. Historians and archaeologists have a responsibility to use all of the facts at their disposal to investigate their studies, and there isn’t enough evidence to support either theory that the Roman villa regularly abandoned their babies or that the burial ground is evidence for a brothel.

1. The half-hearted counter offensive in the northeast, meant to impress the NATO conference, is fizzling out and the Ukrainians are falling back.
2. In the eastern sector, the Ukrainians are being driven back with less effort than in previous campaigns. It's not a rout, but "Defeatist" posts are starting to show up on social media.
3. The Poles are getting feisty, talking about no-fly zones in western Ukraine. I personally think they are just setting the stage for a land grab of historically Polish territory.

113 I have read here from time to time that assertion that the Beatles were a terrible live band and were marginal musicians. In response to that it is worth noting that their live sets were mostly poorly recorded and to make matters completely impossible the screaming overwhelmed everything.

To really get that they were a killer band with tight ensemble work, spot on vocals and harmony all supported by great pop songs with even better arrangements you have to look to the early recordings. The recordings were mostly done live in the studio in a a few takes with the first couple albums, Please, Please, Me and With the Beatles, done live over the course of few hours. To pull off recordings that good, that quickly points to some serious chops.

The other day I stumbled upon a live set, from 1964 in Australia I think, that is remarkably well recorded with the screaming mostly suppressed. The perfection of what I know from those early recordings is all there in this live set and makes abundantly clear they knew what they were about and that they could play there asses off. The first part has video while the second is audio only. I hope you enjoy it.

Most of the legal stuff in Nevada is from these flavors.

167 Yeah, I think adultery is social media was a big driver. She spent hours isolating herself from all of us, constantly on Facebook with friends from high school.Regardless, my youngest starts her freshman year at FSU in August, I’m driving her to Tally tomorrow for academic advising, campus tour, checking out her apt and just general daddy/daughter time together. Have had the same experiences with number 4 at Bama too. To me, she threw away everything real and precious, and for what, I just don’t know. At some point I imagine she’ll understand she traded Manhattan for a handful of beads, but I think that’s part of the nature of temptation.and that the devil gets a good laugh when you realize the trap you willingly entered.

221 Howdy, y'all. Howdy, WeirdDave.

As a kid with an Instamatic, I once took a picture I'd give anything to have again, of mom & dad, bending over a counter, reading a newspaper, Dad's arm around Mom. I thought it was a treasured show of my folks' affection.

The announcement of their divorce was a total shock. My older siblings may have known they had problems, but I had no clue. I was 13. What I thought was our happy home was shattered. What ensued, such sad stories I could relate! It was a bitter divorce with us kids torn up in the battle.

Our folks' divorce had effects unto three generations. All my siblings either never married, or married badly, as a rule. My older brother had two brief failed marriages; he died a bitter old hermit, hating our mother whom he blamed for the divorce, estranged from the family, from his three kids, from his grandkids.

By grace of God I married and stayed married to my angel who gave us three kids. Wasn't easy.

Still affecting my life today, over half a century later.

You never get over it.

Moving on...

I think the main reason is the women all have a 'bad boy' fixation without the risk as the men they 'love' are in prison.

Then there are the 'I can fix him' savior types.

Ted Bundy proposed in court in Florida and the damn woman, Carole Ann, accepted. She later divorced him before he was electrocuted.

Her children's father relinquished custody and she and Dad each adopted the other's children. They also had a child of their own.
The five of us realized recently that 3 and 4 were so young at the time, that 1 and I are the only ones with any real memory of Mom and Dad not being all our parents.
It was a challenging situation in many ways, but we grew up as just one family.

That is not the purpose, the purpose is to grind in the fact that the feds control who makes what food, and f you want to make food, you have to deal with the feds.

I was reading a work by an historian named Joel Mokyr today, and one of his points was that the 20s and 30's were a period with a large jump in agriculture production in America due to capitaliszation (loans during WWI) and advances in farming, both of which reduced the cost of food. FDR was trying to solve the falling cost of foods but I suspect he thought it was due to markets, and not production increase pushed by government and the federal reserve messing with the industry

Re "common era". The jokes on them, actually. "Common Era" meant Christian era originally. I think Kepler first used it. "Vulgar era" or something like that. "Vulgar" meant common, and didn't have the strong negative connotations it has now.

Anyway common era, mean the era the common people were using, which was the Christian era, as opposed to some elite, noble regnal year numbering convention, such as the 2nd Year of King Chuckles, and so forth.

I don't think anyone worried about good gear by semi modern standards until the late 60s, and the Beatles stopped touring in 1966. Big concerts were screamfests for young girls mostly and a way to make money.

416 Took my month old putt-putt motorcycle on it longest trip to date, 140 miles round trip, through the farm land north of Las Cruces. Going slow and being exposed to everything gives a heightened understanding of everything. The Rio Grande truly makes life possible here, an oasis of green; feet beyond the irrigatied fields becomes desert again. The land here is big, mountainous, and mostly empty and sparsely populated once you get out of Las Cruces. On the trip home I took the main secondary highway, top speed 55 mph while my bike tops out at 50 mph. No worries though since I was only passed twice over in close to 70 miles. I like that, the fields, and watching the farm laborers working the Chile fields as I ride by.

418 Re "common era".

What exactly do the Asians make of this "common era" crap?

I had never heard of this "phantom time" theory. That somebody in the Church was trying to pull something with the dates and added 200-something to 300 years.

I was just looking, it doesn't wash to well. One thing was the observations of eclipses dating back before the supposed extra centuries were added in Chinese and other calendars as well as European. Those agree with the current calendar number of years.

well, I only read a couple of articles on it, and it is one of those massive re-organizing items, but depending on which worker in dendrochronology you look to, there may be a gap there and duplication in rings for around 200 years, and evidence from astro-archaeology that may confirm it The hypothesis is that the date was inflated at the initiation of the calendar, with a bad back-count, though accepting this would require re-determining things like what the relationship was between Justinian and Constantine. This is a paradigm shaking change, and one that would never be accepted without massive amounts of proof.

One of the big problems (astronomically/scientifically) with the AD/BC year numbering is the lack of a year 0.

The astronomical calendar system includes a year 0. This is 1 BC. So, you have a proper system of negative years. The year -1 is 2 BC and so on.

This preserves leap year divisibility rules and all that. They do have a problem, and that's the Julian/Gregorian discontinuity. They use Julian before the date of the Gregorian and Gregorian thereafter. Thus 10 dates don't exist, and that adds some arithmetic complexity. And the Julian calendar is then proleptically extended as far back as desired.

The reason they don't proleptically extend the Gregorian is it would cause all sorts of conflicts with pre-Gregorian dates for many historical events. But still there is a period after the Gregorian was first instituted before others (looking at you, England) still used the Julian. But there has been confusion and screw ups based on that already.

So, don't add any more, and use the Julian before.

469 No fault divorce is the necessary evil that emerged from our turning away from God. Marriage became just another box to check as you aimlessly muddled through life. Oh, we kept the regal wedding ceremony, and I personally did not regret the open bar, but the families were made to understand that their participation ended when the party did. It wasn't always thus.

After my marriage cratered, I watched those of three other close friends crash and burn. In every case, it was the right thing to do for all concerned.

If the author wants to do something "for the children", I'd suggest abolishing Family Courts. Divorce should be handled through normal civil court channels. Too many FC judges fancy themselves latter day Solomons, and would literally split the baby for the appearance of fairness. In any event, divorce is a symptom of a bigger societal problem. Making it more difficult to obtain does nothing to address the our species' willingness to trade God's law with the law of the jungle

Looking at this "3 missing century" thing, I found an explanation of the error the proponent of this "conspiracy" made. He found that the calendar should be behind (or ahead, depending on how you think about it) by 13 days instead of 10 at the time the Gregorian was instituted. So, he concludes that had fudged something beforehand.

Here was his error. The Julian was instituted in 45BC. The Gregorian reform did not try to rest the equinox to the date then, but the date of March 21 in 325 AD, the time of the First Council of Nicea.

In 45BC, the Vernal equinox occurred on Mar. 23. That is his 3 centuries error.

473 Heh. Love the meme at the bottom.

Dreadful day today. Set out in the nice restored Studebaker convertible to drive to Vancouver (a 12 hour road trip, normally). Made it as far as Cochrane, Alberta, about 100 miles of the trip. Engine quit on me, no fuel. After some troubleshooting, I noticed the toggle switch for the electric fuel pump was quite warm. "Hmm, looks like that switch just gave out. No problem, just bypass it." Pump ran, I had fuel, and I was off down the road. Failed again shortly before I was to enter Banff National Park. Well, it can't be the switch this time. Took the pump out, blew through it, made sure the line from the tank to the pump was clear, got going again. Decided to turn around and go home. Got home about an hour ago, after numerous more stalls, a tow job ($$$), and borrowing a friend's truck and trailer to haul it home. Real problem now found: clogged bronze filter in carb inlet.

6/22: 90,980
6/15: 116,524
6/8: 110,962
6/1: 104,250

So in one month, nearly a half a million people tried to register to vote without ID. Oh, and 391 of those people were dead.

Talk about decades of unbridled stupidity killing small operators with ridiculous "safety" costs and no way to challenge those arbitrary workplace measures which meant only the giant contractors could afford to bid on large scale projects. It's very telling, as Ace and others have pointed out: The media and other Dems are all in on his dropping out, NOT because of the danger to the country now, but because they know they will lose to The Evil Trump. That's all they care about.

Vision: Trump wins in biggest landslide since Reagan in '84. The markets tick up and the Fed cuts interest rates, and by Christmas it's possible to buy a home without a 7% interest rate. Not just Morning in America again, but The First Morning of Summer Vacation When You're Twelve in America!

516 My life is but a weaving
between my God and me.
I do not choose the colors;
He worketh steadily.
Ofttimes He weaveth sorrow,
and I in foolish pride
forget He sees the upper,
and I the underside.

Not 'til the loom is silent
and the shuttles cease to fly
will God unroll the canvas
and explain the reasons why
the dark threads were as needful
in the skillful Weaver's hand
as the threads of gold and silver
in the pattern He has planned.
