  • The FTC has banned messaging app NGL (not gonna lie) from hosting minors after catching them systematically lying. (Washington Post)

    Surprise, surprise, surprise.
The complaint alleged that NGL tricked users into paying for subscriptions by sending them computer-generated messages appearing to be from real people and offering a service for as much as $9.99 a week to find out their real identity. People who signed up received only "hints" of those identities, whether they were real or not, enforcers said.
After users complained about the "bait-and switch tactic," executives at the company "laughed off" their concerns, referring to them as "suckers," the FTC said in an announcement.
And now NGL has to fork over five million dollars.

    Suckers indeed.

5 Get rid of my books?! Why would I do that?

Sure, I haven't read most of them but maybe one day I will get the time, yes? (oh, who am I kidding...)

Nobody wants a bunch of science, math, textbooks and non-fiction. I inherited many of the volumes, because they weren't wanted elsewhere!

Most of my books are highly specialized, and many are now rare and/or very expensive. The Kid doesn't have much interest in the focus of my reference library so I have informal arrangements for them to go to colleagues and for the core of the library to remain intact.

Speaking of guns, I'm putting a 1903 Colt New Navy back into a sort of working order and am missing a rebound lever pin, of course totally unavailable. I tried the trigger pin in the holes and it seemed okay, miked at 3/32" so I bought a drill bit. Nope, too small. It needs to be closer to 7/64", which of course nobody around me has. So had to order that, I might just drill out the assemblies. If you ever happen across one of these model revolvers, I recommend attending Colt Forum and reading up on them before even thinking about shooting it with anything. They're a Mickey Mouse Rube Goldberg apparatus and ended up in the scrap heap of history for a good reason.

54 To sum up, while the metallurgy of the Colt New Army/Navy is pretty much okay, the lock work is so absurdly complicated, finicky, hand-fitted, and generally weak, that the real risk is cylinder chambers not lining up with the barrel; the firing pin aperture, plus age-wear, is so sloppy it can catch the edge of a primer and fire a cartridge when it's as much as 1/16" off-center; the bullet impacts the edge of the forcing cone and-

59 Colt New Army/Navy lock up is also weakened by the counter-clockwise rotation of the cylinder, which pushes the cylinder against the crane and cylinder release catch, which wear prematurely. Colt tried to compensate by making the cylinder stop a replacement part, softer, but that meant it had to be returned to Colt to be 'tuned up' every so often to remain safe to use. Now nobody works on this Dumb Design, there are no more parts to file-to-fit as they are all used parts, so for the most part these revolvers are unsafe and should be hung on a wall.

73 I can’t make this stuff up. Recently, we tried to help Target. Our Property Crimes detectives and sergeant were contacted numerous times by Target to help them with shoplifters, mostly who were known transients.

At the briefing, we were told by their head of regional security that we could not contact suspects inside the store; we could not handcuff suspects in the store;

We were told they didn't want to create a scene inside the store and have people film it and put it on social media.

Our deputies watched a lady on camera bring in her own shopping bags, go down the body wash isle, and grab a bunch of Native body washes. Then she went to customer service and return them! Target chose to do nothing and simply let it happen.

We don’t tell big retail how to do their jobs, they shouldn’t tell us how to do ours.

Then he told them they had 24 hours to remove it all or he'd throw it into dumpsters. They backed down and agreed to his terms; he then told them they had 24 hours to put it all back, with their own people, or it would go into dumpsters anyway. Haha!

This. They are both progressive disorders with no cure. I think the media thinks Americans think Parkinson's is something more meaningful in terms of his decline than dementia.

Thanks, m. No that actually reinforces my view. The listed symptoms for Parkinson's they show was very incomplete and did not show the major symptoms, only the ones suggested by interview. Those symptoms are present in dementia patients and Parkinson's.

You do not see the limited range of motion, the spasmodic tremors, and motor limitations in speech that are more dispositive.

101 I have served people with Parkinson's and it can get very bad, often with very serious hallucinations and delusions, paranoid features and everything.

105 I don't care if it's lupus, the man is a criminal and the junta that swept him into power are traitors.

I don't care if he's a gibbering old bastard or a 35 year old triathlete with doctorates in sanskrit and astrophysics.

Is all a distraction, intentional or otherwise, from the rampant systematic criminality that long ago smashed through the bounds of common everyday corruption.

109 @57+70/San Franpsycho and @65/olddog:

And while everyone is paying attention to and arguing the finer points that surround the question of "What's wrong with Biden?" very little attention is being paid to the question of "How do we change the voting, counting, and verification systems to drastically reduce the ability to commit voting fraud?"

Those committing the fraud know that the courts are extremely reluctant to overturn the result of a vote, and they count on that fact. The last thing they want is a serious long-term focus on solving this problem to actually reduce the fraud.

Notice how voting/counting security and authentication is rarely (if ever) talked about during the time between elections, particularly during the run-up to one? The only time it does get talked about is afterwards for a short time, and only in a media-theatrics sort of way. In the intervening time between elections: Crickets.

Also, I love how Linux Mint updates take a couple of minutes, even with large ones. Microsoft's update system is a clown show of wasted time.

112 Americans think Parkinson's is something more meaningful

For sure. Nothing is real in this branch of medicine. The potential diagnoses have been shopped around to compute what best fits the narrative and evokes the most sympathy.

Sure beats tertiary syphilis.
