Top Story

  • Goldman Sachs released a report on generative AI - the hot new thing pushing stock valuations of key tech companies into the trillions. In short: It's trash. (Where's Your Ed)

The article linked above is not short but it is a good read. The full report is available for download and it doesn't pull any punches either:
The promise of generative AI technology to transform companies, industries, and societies continues to be touted, leading tech giants, other companies, and utilities to spend an estimated ~$1tn on capex in coming years, including significant investments in data centers, chips, other AI infrastructure, and the power grid. But this spending has little to show for it so far beyond reports of efficiency gains among developers. And even the stock of the company reaping the most benefits to date - Nvidia - has sharply corrected.
    From the article:
In essence, on top of generative AI not having any killer apps, not meaningfully increasing productivity or GDP, not generating any revenue, not creating new jobs or massively changing existing industries, it also requires America to totally rebuild its power grid, which Janous regrettably adds the US has kind of forgotten how to do.
    There is that, yes.
Generative AI is not going to become AGI, nor will it become the kind of artificial intelligence you've seen in science fiction. Ultra-smart assistants like Jarvis from Iron Man would require a form of consciousness that no technology currently - or may ever - have - which is the ability to both process and understand information flawlessly and make decisions based on experience, which, if I haven't been clear enough, are all entirely distinct things.
Right. Although the understanding doesn't have to be flawless, merely good enough for the task at hand, and cheap enough that it's not simpler to just train a human and pay them to do it.

Generative AI doesn't understand anything - it is a language model, not a fact model; doesn't gain experience, at least not in its current form, which is trained once at enormous expense and then left to rot; and doesn't make decisions.

It's not AGI and has no path to become AGI. Terry Winograd's SHRDLU from 1968 is in important respects more sophisticated than ChatGPT, even though it was written by a single grad student on an 18-bit computer more than fifty years ago.

7 Evening and morning to all the early risers and late toilers!

Pixy's disclaimer is, I believe, from the famous Arthur C. Clarke story "The Nine Billion Names of God."

Tuesday in the month of July, and it's still hot. What else is new. "July = hot" is in the same commonplace class as "F. Joke Biden makes a gaffe" and "A department of the U.S. government makes things worse than before."

Over a month ago, one of you Morons recommended buying NVDA, with the assumption that there would soon be a stock split.

My liquid assets were tied up but I bought a single share for around $1008. The stock wound up splitting 10:1, plus I'm up by around 20%.

Thanks.

44 At the office finishing up a rather conceptual piece that's not really for general consumption... it's taken a year, what a PIA. Two books arrived in the mail, Pavel Florensky's ICONOSTASIS, which is considered a Great Metaphysical Masterpiece in some Orthodox Christian circles (and which I think is crap), and a William Blake monograph, THE COMPLETE ILLUMINATED BOOKS from The William Blake Trust. His Alchemic Wackiness reminds me of some of the crazier 'zines you used to see in their early 1990s heyday.

79 The Where's Your Ed article was useful in helping me understand the difference between AI and generative AI, particularly here:

Generative AI generates outputs based on text-based inputs and requests, ... yet the answer is always, as obvious as it sounds, generated fresh, meaning that there is no actual "knowledge" or, indeed, "intelligence" operating in any part of the process.

and here:

How does GPT – a transformer-based model that generates answers probabilistically ... based entirely on training data – do anything more than generate paragraphs of occasionally-accurate text?

We're due for rain today, the remnants of Beryl. This will keep the temps down, though not the humidity. Perhaps this afternoon there will not be that savage yellow-white sunlight glaring against my blinds. It makes me think the Springfield nuclear plant is about to blow.

Is it possible to be both depressed and infuriated?

Along with the horrendous number of ads befouling the atmosphere the 'net is becoming an experience I want little to do with.

89 Years ago I drove my work truck to Cheyenne WY to work on a buddy's grandmother's house, and on the way back the wind was so strong I couldn't keep the truck on the road on 70 so we transferred to US-30. That was an eye-opener. We drove through towns clearly occupied by nobody buy old retired people and a few younger failures-to-launch. I recall one town where several old brick buildings had simply collapsed into the streets, and they had just put barricades around the rubble and left it.

92 I was able to observe firsthand the decline and death of small towns in the Catskills as a youth. Spending summers there you could see year-by-year more people gone, more stores and businesses closed.

95 Good morning! I woke up before the alarm clock.

My experience with AI so far:

When searching for, say "recipe for rhubarb cake with strawberries", it spits out an explanation followed by bulleted combinations of ingredients and/or directions. Sometimes it has two recipes broken into five bullet points. Two or three entries below the AI is the link to the desired recipe on a legitimate website.

AI: 0 Regular link-clicking: 1

When getting a plumber scheduled, it decided to accommodate my morning request and his afternoon opening by giving me an 8-hour window. It also "decided" with its non-existent brain that my street address was wrong and therefore rerouted to a similarly-named street in the nearby city. (To be fair to the brainless AI, my community shares a zipcode with the city).

Flint, Michigan. The last time I drove a detour through there, many of the abandoned houses/businesses were gone and replaced by meadows. Some people finally got a rural landscape through attrition. But every still-standing brick party store or boarded-up salon was covered in graffiti.

115 My 'hood came close to abandonment during the last Housing Collapse. At least half the houses on my block were empty for 10 years, 3 had to be torn down. Nobody would even rent them. I kind of liked it, really.
If I'd had the money I'd have bought them all and razed half the block, and had myself an estate.
Unfortunately the economy bounced back and my opportunity was lost.
