Dirty Jobs Cafe

oilrigturningocean.jpg

Don't leave meat out, you'll attract sharks.

Launching an oil rig.

The view from an oil rig.

Sea-Going Cowboys.

A different kind of hand-fishing.

Did you say "a tiger secretly living in an apartment"?

Probably the worst job in the world, except for Hillary Clinton's dietician.

Another job I wouldn't want.

I might be willing to play nursemaid to a leopard, but only when it's a kitten.

Crocodile racing seems like a dangerous gig.

Snake disposal had better have a good benefits package.

The job of Cobra Bouncer is just a no for me, dog.

Petting a tiger with your hand covered with blood might be sending the wrong signal about whether you are friend or food.

They couldn't find a human willing to be a playmate to tiger cubs, so they took the best applicant they could find.

Osprey Lifeguard.

I wouldn't mind being a Giraffe Greeter.

Rodeo Clown College isn't a pushover.

Horse just got hired as the frontman for a Whitesnake cover band.

101 Despite their fearsome reputation, cobras are actually pretty chill. My wife and I saw a demonstration in Thailand where barefoot guys removed cobras from a bin and casually dropped them right next to their feet. The cobras just started slithering away (toward the audience!) and the handlers would come and drag them back, but otherwise ignored them.

Not so the Russell's viper. They took one out - with tongs - put it on the ground, and while one guy spoke, another guy standing next to him did not take his eye off the Russell's viper, which was hissing menacingly. They had infinite respect for that damned snake, which apparently has a nasty temper and is highly aggressive.

Btw, Russell's viper was the snake in Conan Doyle's story "The Speckled Band."

Scoop: Schumer open to dumping Biden in 2024

https://tinyurl.com/ybr54rhz

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer is privately signaling to donors that he's open to a Democratic presidential ticket that isn't led by President Biden, Axios has learned.

Why it matters: In public, Schumer has been insistent that he is "for Joe." In private, he's singing a different tune.

I think he's always been in favor of it, but now that both he and Pelosi are hinting strongly in private and, to a lesser degree, in public, and it's clear that Obama is scheming in the background, the pressure on Biden to drop out will be immense.

175 I hadn't been considering this until when I was looking at the poll post.

There is still a good number of undecideds in the Trump/Biden matchup. The debate was the opportunity for Biden to convince those voters to settle into voting for him like they did in 2020.

While everyone is talking about it being a disaster, no one is thinking about the missed opportunity. The reason he took the risk doing the debate in the first place.

A convoy of thirty-seven merchant ships is ploughing through icy, submarine-infested North Atlantic seas during the most critical days of World War II, when the German submarines had the upper hand and Allied shipping was suffering heavy losses. In charge is Commander George Krause, an untested veteran of the U.S. Navy. Hounded by a wolf pack of German U-boats, he faces 48 hours of desperate peril trapped on the bridge of the ship. Exhausted beyond measure, he must make countless and terrible decisions as he leads his small fighting force against the relentless U-boats.

The spitting cobra blinds the prey and then strikes. In 1950s Jinja, Uganda there was a Whiteman we called the snakeman who would sneak up behind a snake, grab it by the tail, whirl it a few times over his head and then slam it down, usually killing it. As a small child I found this impressive to watch. He then harvested the skins for leather. He had many encounters with spitting cobras and his arms and face (any normally exposed skin) had quarter-sized brownish blotches from where the corrosive venom hit him.

We're getting down into the low hundreds now. Supposed to go to high nineties this weekend.
Looking forward to the cooler days.
No rain for 2 months at least.

336 I know! Let's order Sailors to wear blue work uniforms while at sea just in case they go overboard. Oh yeah, let's have them melt when near equipment on fire too!

Yeah... I'm old school... I LIKED Dungarees.

But spent most of my career in blue jeans and cotton shirts... which worked.... (and coveralls).

The whole camo thing? dumb IMO.

337 For some reason I want to say that I remember reading something recently about some Israelis needing to defend a building and having a hard time securing ammo. Maybe Biden's dog can tell us more.

But I think Israel has weird gun regulations. Folks have guns but no way to shoot them?

338 I would kill for some decent TS action here in SoCal. Back in the day per offspring, I would check the SAT models for the upper deserts and chase my best options out into the Mohave and sometimes half way out to Needles AZ.

Biden's dog (usually here in the early morning) tried and tried to get a permit and was refused over and over. I don't know if he succeeded finally but, initially he had no luck.
They need to be able to own firearms.

345 I assume 95% readers of military / sci-fi books are men and they're often almost entirely unaware of the rigors of boot camp, so authors have to routinely explain the difficulties.

HAHA!

I fell asleep this morning with the feed on, after laughing to old videos of Overly Attached Girlfriend, and woke up to a couple of teenage girls on YT reciting bad pickup lines. I think my favorite is:

"I'm not staring at your boobs, I'm looking into your heart!"

354 Not the worst pickup line though.

Back in the Bad Old Days when I had a blog, and had links, there was a really nice lady who had moved on from the Mormon Thing. She described a teenaged date in which the boy took her to McDonalds (which for him was probably like a walk on The Moon), prayed loudly over the meal, and then blurted out, "You'd be beautiful pregnant."

355 Chris Bunch, who wrote Sten (with Allan Cole), served tours in Vietnam, from what I've dug out. Then he came home and opposed the war. Kind of like Haldeman of "Forever War" fame.

356 You'd be beautiful pregnant.

I need to try that line.

357 Why is everyone so afraid of snakes?

You just kick them out of the way when you're mowing. It's not a big deal. So they might bite your pants or something, you shake them off.

I returned from a truly genocidal civil war, all fucked up, opposed to the whole thing, then realized after a few years it's not really worth it and people never learn. It will just repeat.
I own guns and if anyone tries to take them due to some retarded idea I 'don't need them any more' they are going to get them muzzle first.

362 Those big offshore rigs are always damned impressive. If you want to understand the size of it, look at the whitish portion, center right. That is basically a 7 story hotel, with all the amenities, capable of housing a couple hundred men, and it's just sitting there on the platform along with all the much bigger gear. With a giant helicopter platform on top.
