The Quotes of The Day

Quote I

"We are setting a very clear expectation in San Jose that we're not going to tolerate sideshows. We've passed laws that are indicative of that. It is illegal to promote or spectate at sideshows, not just be the one driving the vehicle," San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan

Quote II

“Workers all over the country are passing out, suffering heat stroke and dying from heat exposure from just doing their jobs, and something must be done to protect them,” Doug Parker, assistant secretary for the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA),

Quote III

"I think we've all been guilty of throwing those little fireworks at each other," he said. "We've all gotten minor burns from faulty fireworks and stuff like that. But I know the running joke is you have all 10 of your fingers on July 3, and you only come back with nine on July 4. It'd be nice to avoid that.” Eric Evenson

Quote IV

"Something has broken inside me; from that hour on, I would have to wear a mask -- not only to the public but to the one I loved best in the world; for he must never know how ill he was, and I must carry on." Edith Bolling Galt Wilson, September, 1919, after President Wilson's stroke (H/T Isophorone Blog)

Quote V

"The combustion engine is our core product, and that will remain so for the coming future," Riley Nelson, NASCAR's head of sustainability

It isn't only the national Chamber of Commerce who dislikes you and I.

Coeur d’Alene’s regional chamber proves it hates the First Amendment and free speech

An uproar took place in the Idaho town of Coeur d’Alene prior to July 4th this year when the town’s regional chamber issued regulations on what was allowed to be displayed by individuals during its July 4th holiday parade.

Under parade regulations adopted by the chamber board this year, “Symbols associated with specific political movements, religions, or ideologies” were unacceptable. [Linda Coppess, chamber president and CEO,] wrote that in the past, the chamber received numerous complaints about displays that people found offensive, including “Confederate flags, derogatory illustrations, harsh politically-based language, and graphic photographs.” Coppess wrote that last year alone, she received over 50 complaints about different signage and symbols that were deemed offensive.

To address those concerns, the chamber consulted national organizations to ensure its guidelines were transparent and fair, she wrote. “Our intention with this policy was simple: to create an environment where everyone feels welcome and respected,” Coppess wrote.

The chamber listed several other things as unacceptable for the parade, including signs promoting controversial political issues, displays containing divisive or inflammatory language related to political debates and signs displaying slogans or messages that incite political division or unrest. [emphasis mine]

Within days the chamber was overwhelmed with thousands of complaints from local citizens, most of whom appeared to be especially offended by the ban of religious symbols. As a result, the chamber backed down partly, rescinding that particular restriction. Below is a short clip from the July 4th Coeur d’Alene parade. As you can see, a lot of people came carrying crosses. I suspect they would have been there whether or not the religious ban was rescinded, expressing defiance.

Certainly not the headlines the tourism commission of Chicago wanted to see.

19 killed, 86 wounded in shootings during extended Fourth of July weekend in Chicago
Of those shot, 24 were in mass shootings in Greater Grand Crossing, the Near West Side, Douglas and Austin.

More than 100 people were shot, including 19 who were killed, during shooting attacks in Chicago over the extended Fourth of July weekend.

By the end of Friday, the tally of shootings — six people shot Thursday and 62 shot Friday, 12 killed over both days — surpassed the numbers for last year’s entire holiday weekend. Last year, 11 people were killed and 62 wounded over the holiday weekend, which stretched over four days, July 1-4.

Oh no! Financial analyst Alice Isaac woke up to a good five inches. (Of wood bamboo specifically)

Woman’s home damaged by bamboo growing ‘five inches a day’

The stress of battling invasive and rapidly growing bamboo has pushed a homeowner almost to the brink of illness.

Financial analyst Alice Isaac, 42, bought her property in rural Gloucestershire last year for roughly £173,000.

At the time she claims not even to have noticed the bamboo growing in her neighbour’s garden.

One American company is betting on hydrogen.

This KDH engine has experts in suspense: new fuel predicted 100 years ago has worked

We once talked about the REx engines that nobody knew about, much less in America. However, in the country, we don’t know what the KDH engine is either, with a completely new type of injection that we are not used to. They have just unveiled the next generation, and the world is on tenterhooks while we are still watching for Tesla. The prototype runs on zero-emission fuel (and yes, remember, it’s combustion)—that’s why experts are talking about a “new era”.

This fuel was predicted 100 years ago: Now, it has been used on an engine prototype
Kohler Engines, a manufacturing company that deals in engines for different sectors, has recently exhibited its latest creation, the KDH hydrogen engine, at the 2023 Agritechnica show held in Hannover, Germany. This brand-new internal combustion engine, which can use hydrogen sourced and developed by Kohler itself, represents an important development in the company’s strategic line.

A new hurdle for the anti-gun zealots to leap.

Ammo Vending Machines a Big Hit at Alabama Grocery Stores

The company American Rounds has actually installed their automated ammunition vending machines in six grocery stores; four in Oklahoma and two in Alabama, where the machines have drawn the interest of local media (and local politicians) in places like Tuscaloosa.

During a briefing of the Tuscaloosa City Council before their regular slate of meetings, city council president Kip Tyner asked police chief Brent Blankley and other municipal leaders to explain a vending machine selling people ammunition at the Fresh Value store on at the corner of Skyland and McFarland Boulevards.

"I got some calls about ammunition being sold in grocery store vending machines," Tyner said. "I thought it was a joke, but it's not."

Not only can you win the Jack Ass Award Neil McCarthy, 25, of Oregon. You have won tonight's Genius Award.

American Airlines passenger drinking 'Jack and Cokes' reportedly exposes himself, forces emergency landing
The disruptive passenger told police he had downed several 'Jack and Cokes' before the flight

No names. But there were Genius Award Winners on this flight as well.

'Mass brawl' forces Ryanair 'flight from hell' to make emergency landing after just 36 minutes
Ryanair flight from Morocco to London diverted after passengers become disruptive

A Ryanair "flight from hell" was diverted for an emergency landing just 36 minutes after takeoff due to a "mass brawl" that broke out between travelers aboard the aircraft, according to passengers.

The flight departed from Agadir, Morocco, to London on Wednesday when the disturbance broke out mid-flight, the Sun reported.

"It was so stressful. It was like the flight from hell," an unnamed passenger told the outlet. "And it all escalated from that one passenger wanting to change seats."

I had a job that took me into other people's homes. If they had family photos up I never thought of it as tacky. Actually, I thought it was kind of nice.

Interior designer says that having family photo 'shrines' in the house is poor taste
Is decorating with family photos tacky?

Shannyn Weiler, a Utah-based interior designer, has caused a debate on TikTok after she urged people to use caution when displaying family photos in the home. The discussion started a debate over whether a home should be decorated for visitors or the family itself and if having a “shrine” dedicated to family members is tasteful.

I wonder if Little Lawrence's nickname was "Squishy Boy"? What a sniveling coward.

MSNBC Host Calls For Biden Aides To Be Allowed On Stage With Him At Next Debate

MSNBC host Lawrence O’Donnell has called for allowing Joe Biden to have aides with him on stage to speak for him and help him sound coherent.

O’Donnell said that it would be good to “Allow the candidates to have as many staff as they want, join them on the stage throughout the debate, and make sure that all of them have microphones.”

He added that “the candidates should be allowed to turn to their staff and confer with them about anything at any time in the debate.”

“And we should be able to hear everything they say. So we can hear if the candidate has competent or incompetent staff, we could hear the candidate overrule some advisers and say something else,” he continued.

“We could watch the candidates actually think and process information, including including possibly information that they might not know until a staff member tells them or reminds them,” O’Donnell further suggested.

He continued, “A candidate should be allowed to let staff members actually answer questions for them.”

Stop that boat!!!! Tonight's Feel Good Story of The Day.

A leap of faith.

A New Hampshire teen heroically jumped from a jetski onto a rogue boat to stop it from spinning uncontrollably in a popular lake after its captain was knocked off during a sailing lesson.

Brady Procon, 17, sprang into action Wednesday when his father, Justin, told him an unmanned boat was speeding in circles in Smith’s Cove on Lake Winnipesaukee, according to WMUR-TV.

That is innovative, but it is still a standard Democratic trope for blaming all the mentally ill people on the street in major cities on Ronald Reagan.

You see, Reagan deinstitutionalized the mentally ill forty years ago, and he cast a magic spell that kept Democrats from reversing Reagan's decisions, even when they were in power.

So, it's still all Reagan's fault.

88 I remember Leno was big on the future of hydrogen as a fuel. And they are right, the only byproduct is water (although water vapor is also a "greenhouse gas").

There are two problems though, last I heard it does not have equivalent BTU to the same volume of gasoline, making it difficult to store enough fuel in the vehicle. Also the infrastructure to replace the gas stations is completely different. Requires 100% replacement of what is out there now.

The last point is the same problem EVs have, but at least you can recharge them at home, so they have a commuter use.

90 I am compelled, by forces that arise from the unfettered vastness of the universe, to observe that Lawrence O'Donnell's suggestions for the debate are not compelling or sagacious. At times, when I harken back to the storied days of the Hanseatic League, I am assailed with a thought that demands an answer - is Lawrence O'Donnell brazen enough to try to rig the debates in favor of a decrepit president a prince of his own party's disorder? And, if he is, does he do so as a partisan, a patriot, or simply as a gay man?

Probably that. A weak, gay man, a nancy-boy who mistakes reading remarks before a camera for an accomplishment, a feat, a deed of renown. Yet outside the studio lights the void looms, the negation of all folly and the bane of even the best make-up artist.

There are two kinds of those. Those who are legit hardcore conservatives and hate the left with a burning passion, having seen it at work, and rich twats running away from the mess they created.

That latter group is doing a real number on parts of Montana in addition to accelerating the collapse of Washington via CA -> WA. And we all know how CO turned out.

Fortunately the problem in Idaho is pretty contained. CDA is a pretty small pocket of it, and the moonbats in Boise struggle to exert influence even in some parts of the city, let alone outside of it. The existing population doesn't have much patience for this BS and the non-moonbat transplants have even less. Progs think they'll chip away at it but things will come to a head nationally long before they succeed there.

It will break the soul of anyone who specializes in it, either from the uselessness of it as an academic pursuit, or the evil that it does in the world in general.

149 AP: Gavin Newsom works to bolster Biden in a swing-state tour that could boost both their ambitions
https://t.co/CPqL8D4Bma

The ambitious California governor understood that any visit to a bastion of presidential politics would fuel speculation that he might be eyeing President Joe Biden’s job. But on Monday, with Biden fighting an existential political crisis, the embattled president dispatched Newsom to New Hampshire to help rescue his flailing campaign.
It was the latest and perhaps most significant stop in a multi-state tour for Newsom.
“I decided instead of just rolling over and giving up, that I would step up and pick up the fight,” Newsom told reporters at a highway rest stop in his first public appearance in the state.
Since the debate June 27, Newsom has campaigned on Biden’s behalf in Michigan, Pennsylvania and now New Hampshire.

157 I've been thinking about the whole Biden situation, I have an opinion on what is going on.

I know this is probably too white pill for most, I get it. I'm not offended.

The people who are trying to get Biden out are the insiders and the office holders. Tester issued a statement after Jill Biden's letter went out saying effectively "put up or shut up". The way this is all going down tells me that the DC crowd knows Biden is going to lose, and there are not enough dirty tricks in the bag to overcome Trump's lead. The lawfare was Plan A, and the illegals voting was Plan B, and they just don't have the votes.

Also, down ballot races are in danger, since most of those don't benefit from urban machine cheating. The seats in those areas are safe.

But rank and file Democrats that voted in the primaries, and are rabidly infected with TDS? They actually believe Biden won legitimately in 2020. I've talked to many of them over the last 3 years, and they think we are insane for thinking that the country didn't vote to get rid of Orange Man Bad. So, they don't see the danger, and believe that Joe really can win, if the elites would just stop undermining Biden and get back to Trump's lies.

I respect your view, but as far as I can tell, Keynesian and the current General whatever theory is at best phenomenological, in that it explains what is seen, but cannot explain why it happened or predict any recurrence, and often falls back on the explanation that things happen because it is their nature to do so. It seems to have not interest in problems with fiat currency or debt, outside of being useful accounting tricks.
I have been wrong before and I admit my full exposure were various 100 level econ classes, and helping an ex girlfriend with her econ/accounting class (which used a textbook written by Paul Krugman and some other academic that was a restatement of the Samuelson and Nordhaus textbook "for dull students") But I wound up listening to Jesus Huerta de Soto instead.

208 Sideshows are like flash mobs. They take over a particular intersection and do burn outs, people gather around, some get injured or killed when the inevitable collision happens. Sometimes alcohol is involved. Stolen cars, yes. And then there is the twerking and gunplay.
All in good fun.

223 There are two problems though, last I heard it does not have equivalent BTU to the same volume of gasoline, making it difficult to store enough fuel in the vehicle. Also the infrastructure to replace the gas stations is completely different. Requires 100% replacement of what is out there now.

The last point is the same problem EVs have, but at least you can recharge them at home, so they have a commuter use.

Way, way more weird - body piercing was a big thing with many in both the US and the UK during the Victorian era - concealed, of course, under layers of clothing. Mostly women, but some men as well. 271 The best use of hydrogen, if you're going to burn it as a fuel, is to blend it into natural gas to make a cooler fuel. Forget using it in passenger automobiles. That's the most difficult engineering problem to solve, but there are much easier ones.

I've seen projects (mostly just on the drawing board, not real ones) to use wind turbines to generate electricity to electrolyze water to make hydrogen for combustion. If that's what you want to do, it's stupid to integrate the two things. Use the wind turbines to make electricity for the grid and use electricity from the grid to electrolyze water to make hydrogen. The wind turbines and the hydrogen electrolysis are two completely different processes.

Modest 3 bedroom house built in the 50's quit aways from the lake. His property taxes were nearly 4 times what I pay and I have acreage. His bigger reason for moving were the " ^%#=_@$$/ liberals on the City Council ".The service industry in CDA gets their employees from Post Falls just to the west.

299 I went to the Cheyenne fireworks display this year. Mist people spread blankets or chairs all over Lions Park to catch the show. I'm used to shows from the northeast, so this was a (good) culture shock.

In VT, people sir quietly in their lawn chairs and wait for the show. Lions park, on the other hand, was pretty crowded with lots of kids and lots of personal fireworks. There were Roman candles going off in the middle if crowds with no care given about where they might land. There were firecrackers and bottle rockets and bigger things being set off. It was a lot of fun.

I did see one of the larger personal fireworks go sideways. Two of its salves went horizontal right into people on blankets. No real damage done, soevwryone remained calm and more fireworks ensued.

A couple of decades ago, batteries sucked and hydrogen looked like a good bet for the future. But batteries are good enough now for cars, pickup trucks, and semis.

Even for airplanes, hydrogen is too much of a pain. It will be a long time before we stop using fossil fuel for airplanes, if ever, but it will be synthetic "e-fuel" before hydrogen.

The worst of all worlds is the hydrogen V8 engine. Just a solution looking for a problem.

342 I've seen projects (mostly just on the drawing board, not real ones) to use wind turbines to generate electricity to electrolyze water to make hydrogen for combustion. If that's what you want to do, it's stupid to integrate the two things. Use the wind turbines to make electricity for the grid and use electricity from the grid to electrolyze water to make hydrogen. The wind turbines and the hydrogen electrolysis are two completely different processes.
Posted by: Caesar North of the Rubicon at July 08, 2024 11:31 PM (r5tfK)

Well, making hydrogen by electrolysis is the expensive way to do it. But if you are stuck on stupid , using wind turbines is the best way. Wind blows: you make H2, and store it in pressure vessels. Wind stops: you stop making H2, and sell off some the stored shit. A lot easier than trying make the grid cope with an erratic source of generation. But hydrogen will always be a shitty fuel.

Posted by: mnw

Buchanan was pretty contemptible - I'm not sure if any Chief Executive could have halted the Secession Crisis, but he notably did not try. There was a reason that Old Hickory always called him "Miss Nancy."

Andrew Johnson is no prize either, but I do credit him for resisting a politically-motivated impeachment that, if successful, could have transformed the US into a parliamentary system.

See the problem? That's cloud cover coming and going.

Peak solar irradiance this year was around 1300 W/m^2. High noon on May 19th. Every since it hardly gets over 1000, and only briefly if it's clear at high noon.

It's been sort of hazy all through June up to now. Even when clear looking, there's some obscuration.

Southern Appalachia was effectively deforested by about a century ago - thanks to wood-hungry European shipbuilders. Just saw something interesting. More evidence of a Younger-Dryas impact hypothesis, that about 12,000 years ago, a SMOD wreaked havoc, and nearly extinctified humans at the time.

It was a giant comet, not an asteroid they thing, a 60 mile wide sucker. It broke up in several pieces and they all airbursted in the lower atmosphere.

The effect on the Erf was like a giant nuking from orbit. I noted with interested that one of those YUGE airbursts was likely over South Carolackey, lo, 12,000 years ago.

I did not foresee Gaza and did not foresee Marilyn Katz, the de facto Chairman of the SDS Politburo, kicking the bucket. Nor did I foresee the Biden situation.
Even with the other two factors, Katz could have kept it all under control but without her in place, there is a struggle for primacy within the Chicago Politburo, with Mike Klonsky screaming for Palestinian Terror and blood in the streets, Helen Schiller backing Black Violence, Ayers and Dohrn doing God knows what, and nobody in charge.
So, I revise my prediction from 'Nothingburger' to 'Mindblowing Shitshow'. On the plus side, if it's overcast, I should be able to see the glow from my yard!

543 Modern American libraries have become kind of a sad joke, and that is not good. I don’t know why they gave up shushing that was the Lingua Franca of libraries, you are supposed to be quiet.

Yes, we blame everything on DEI, but in this case DEI really is to blame. Library associations decided shushing was punishing loud cultures and blah blah blah.

Also, most city libraries now are gathering places for the homeless and the mentally ill. There are regular fights, drug use, and let’s just say, awkward behavior, often in the restrooms. There have been several write ups in the press about this, but not enough to change anything.

To be honest, I feel for the librarians who wanted to be bookworms, doing a quiet job with low stress. It turns out many of them now have to focus n security, and take on jobs better left to professionals in substance abuse, homelessness, and other societal problems. I really respect library staff for what they put up with and how they do it and generally in such a happy way.

But it does bother me that even library staff talk at an almost yelling volume these days. The loud talking is not just kids, it is also adults, including staff.

545 Historians say we have better records on ancient Rome then we do of the American old West. The reason is an ancient Rome they wrote down records they left a written record of their life in the world. In the old west of the late 1800s for the most part, they did not. That is why there is so much so-called history of the old West that is mostly labeled as fiction because they don’t have the written records to back it up.

Am curious as to what crap remains on shelves within our schools, though. Where parents cannot go and look!

In the movie "Full Metal Jacket," I can never listen to the Wagner that Lt. Colonel Kilgore is blasting as his choppers attack the VC village without hearing that.

"Kill the Wabbit, kill the Wabbit...'

Warner Brothers definitely had an impact.

The highlights of my day are workouts, breakfast, and maybe smoking a pipe. It's all a gentle downhill run from there. Weekends, highlights are washing the car and the above.

Somebody here told me I really live on the edge. In a town where you can catch a bullet in broad daylight, even in the suburbs, I guess I really do.

573 444 Comment on Twitchy regarding Dr.Jill and Hunter attending WH meetings asked a dang pertinent question. " What's their security clearance." Are members of the President's family? A Monkey wants to know. I wonder if Billy Carter had Top Secret clearance?

While there is normally a process thst includes FBI background checks for giving people clearance, just like with documents, the President is at liberty to grant or revoke whatever security clearance he deems necessary to anybody at any time.

Great. I'll sleep so well, knowing that spongebrain and obastard have granted clearances to gawd-knows-who...

Tell me, do these president-awarded clearances expire when the granting president leaves office, or must they be cancelled some other way?
