Axios: Biden's Prep for Events Includes Photographs Showing Him How to Walk to the Podium

Happy Monday! I hope everyone feels refreshed. I got a lot of sleep the past five days so I'm definitely tanned, rested, and ready.

To finish up the days of the week: Saturday comes from the Roman Titan Saturn. The Germanic tribes didn't have any analogue for Saturn, so they just kept the name.

Sunday comes from Sun Day, which was also the Roman name for it:

Old English Sunnandæg 'day of the sun', translation of Latin dies solis . Compare with Dutch zondag and German Sonntag .

I wondered what were the Germanic tribes' names for the day of the week before they adopted the Roman names (or Germanic analogues of the Roman names). I haven't been able to find that. I guess it's very possible they simply had no names for days of the week. If you ever come across that information, please send it my way.

By the way, the Roman week was originally eight days long. Weird!

On to the Daily Dose of Demented Brandon:

bidennotes.jpg

Brandon's prep includes photographs showing him how to get to the... only podium on the stage.

For his events, President Biden's staffers prepare a short document with large print and photos that include his precise path to a podium, according to an event template the White House sends to staffers.

Why it matters: Since the June 27 debate, some Democrats who've attended and helped set up Biden events have wondered whether his team's focus on minute details were to obscure the 81-year-old president's limitations -- rather than just a reflection of a meticulous staff.

"I staffed a simple fundraiser at a private residence, but they treated it like it was a NATO summit with his movements," according to a person who staffed a Biden event in the past 18 months.

Driving the news: Before a presidential event, the White House sends event staffers a document to emulate when preparing their own materials for the president.

One template -- a copy of which was obtained by Axios -- is short and simple, with one large picture of the event space on each page, accompanied with big text such as: "View from podium," and "View from audience."

In the five-page document, two pages are separate pictures of, "Walk to podium."

The staffer who helped with the fundraiser told Axios: "It surprised me that a seasoned political pro like the president would need detailed verbal and visual instructions on how to enter and exit a room."

A White House official told Axios: "If individuals are not accustomed to seeing advance teams work, that would be a common reaction, whoever the principal is."

Two former aides who worked with Biden during his vice presidency said that at that time his preparation documents were different, and more often relied on site diagrams.

Reality check: Organizing presidential events -- often called "advance work" -- is intensive and detail-focused for every commander-in-chief.

Presidential movements are planned down to every footstep in ways that the movements of a vice president often are not.

Advance documents also have evolved since Biden was vice president, including the increased use of smartphone photographs.

Other prominent principals in the Biden administration use similar methods for plotting his movements, sources told Axios.

White House spokesperson Andrew Bates told Axios that "high levels of detail and precision are critical to presidential advance work -- regardless of who is president -- and these are basic approaches that are used by any modern advance team, including the vice president's office and agencies."

Obviously there is more leaking from the White House intended to drive Brandon out of the race.

Biden promises that "Dark Brandon" -- remember that? -- is back, baby!

In other words, he's seeking to appease angry Democrats by promising them a... fascist retribution against enemies of the party.

To save democracy, you know.

President Joe Biden is intensifying his campaign efforts, confidently declaring "Dark Brandon is back," despite facing mounting pressure from senior Democrats to step aside from the 2024 presidential race. This follows his underwhelming debate performance last month, which raised concerns about his ability to lead.

On a private call Sunday afternoon, four senior House Democrats, including Reps. Jerry Nadler (D-N.Y.), Mark Takano (D-Calif.), Joe Morelle (D-N.Y.), and Adam Smith (D-Wash.), urged Biden to withdraw from the race. These lawmakers, all ranking members of key House committees, expressed a need for a change at the top of the Democratic ticket, sources told The Hill. This sentiment echoes that of five other Democratic lawmakers who have publicly called for Biden to step aside.

Despite this internal pressure, Biden remains steadfast. "Let me say this as clearly as I can: I'm the sitting President of the United States. I'm the nominee of the Democratic party. I'm staying in the race," Biden wrote on the social platform X on Friday.

Biden's campaign stops in Pennsylvania on Sunday were aimed at energizing his base and countering concerns about his age and vigor. Jokingly referencing the "Dark Brandon" meme, he assured supporters in Harrisburg that he is still in the fight. "Dark Brandon is coming back," he quipped, aiming to rally his supporters.

78 I wondered what were the Germanic tribes' names for the day of the week before they adopted the Roman names (or Germanic analogues of the Roman names). I haven't been able to find that. I guess it's very possible they simply had no names for days of the week.

Remember, it was the Jews who came up with the seven-day week. The Romans themselves just divvied up their months into blocks of days -- calends, ides, and nones. I'm guessing that it was the spread of Christianity that introduced the Jewish concept of the week to the classical world, and then to the pagan tribes.

79 The New Republic @newrepublic 19h
We chose the cover image, based on a well-known 1932 Hitler campaign poster, for a precise reason: that anyone transported back to 1932 Germany could very, very easily have explained away Herr Hitler’s excesses and been persuaded that his critics were going overboard. After all, he spent 1932 campaigning, negotiating, doing interviews—being a mostly normal politician. But he and his people vowed all along that they would use the tools of democracy to destroy it, and it was only after he was given power that Germany saw his movement’s full face.

Today, we at The New Republic think we can spend this election year in one of two ways. We can spend it debating whether Trump meets the nine or 17 points that define fascism. Or we can spend it saying, “He’s damn close enough, and we’d better fight.”

We unreservedly choose the latter course. And so we have assembled herein some of our leading intellectual historians of fascism; a member of the fourth estate who learned firsthand what the Trump lash feels like; a leading expert on civil-military relations; a great Guatemalan American novelist with a deep understanding of immigrants’ lives; one of our most incisive cultural critics; and a man with all-too-real experience in living under a notorious authoritarian regime. The scenarios they describe are certainly grim. We dare you to say, after reading these pieces, that they are impossible.

Then they use the levers of the Deep State and the administrative bureaucracy to stonewall Trump at every turn, protecting themselves from retribution. America is experiencing a form of massive Gell-Mann Amnesia

Wikipedia:
"The phenomenon of people trusting newspapers for topics which they are not knowledgeable about, despite recognizing them to be extremely inaccurate on certain topics which they are knowledgeable about."

Democrats just witnessed the entire left-leaning media hide Biden's cognitive decline and act surprised when they got caught via the debate debacle.

Now Democrat know -- with complete certainty -- than the media they trusted can gaslight them on even the most obviously false stories.

Democrats also experienced the total collapse of "expert" credibility during the pandemic.

And yet. . .

Tomorrow they will read a story about 98% of scientists saying climate change is our biggest danger, and they will regard that as pure truth.

They will also believe Joy Reid who says Trump is Hitler.

That's Gell-Mann amnesia. It has a name. You can watch play out it in real time.

Biden calls son Hunter ‘smartest guy I know’ as brother refuses to talk business deals, By Social Links for Emily Jacobs Published Oct. 29, 2020

Joe Biden is shrugging off a torrent of new allegations linking him to his family’s allegedly corrupt business practices, calling his son “the smartest guy I know” — as his brother refuses to take questions on the matter.

Speaking during a surprise appearance Wednesday at a virtual voter mobilization event hosted by Oprah Winfrey, the former vice president made the comment while discussing how he was convinced to join the 2008 Democratic presidential ticket by Sen. Barack Obama.

“I told him I didn’t want to do it. This is public knowledge now. I thought I could help him more as a US senator,” the current Democratic presidential nominee told Winfrey..."

All they have to do is wait until the convention, get through that, and their futures are still secured.

No one fails downward in Democrat politics. Being chief of staff or whatever in Biden's administration during a loss to Trump would just mean that they're on the fast track to some kind of deputy position in the near future, especially if they still have the power within the presidency during the lame duck session to give themselves goodies.

Better to be Chief of Staff of a failed Biden admin in December than to be nothing outside of it.

Its time for many to step back from the edge of the cliff that the MSM has pushed us to. When the MSM start discussing the other candidate with the same breathless rhetoric, maybe I will listen. Until then, I’m riding with Biden!

At this point, any further calls for Biden to drop out (at least by Democratic politicians/leaders) is lazy piling on.

One can simultaneously recognize that the debate did not go well AND that it's time to move on, work hard, and beat Donald Trump. I'm on the side of Team Democracy.

It's obvious he's playing the game (plus, you know, anonymously sourced reports, especially regarding Trump's thinking are suspect), but he's never been more than a reformer. He's trying to work within the system, and part of that system is the existing GOP framework and players.

If true, saying "Scott is worthy a spot in my administration" does good things without even having a mind of offering him a spot.

I don't completely disagree, but I will say that Hillary was supposed to have won in 2016 but didn't have the cheat adequately prepped, and without his election we wouldn't know how deep down in the hole this nation was. We'd be moving to 2030 according to plan along with all the other nations that have the same things happening simulataneously.

Trump's election WAS the most important one in who knows how long.

Will the next one be? Probably not, without some helicopters (which I'm fine with). I figure this country's destiny has been set for the last 20-40 years, and the Great Unpleasantness II is coming at the hands of the government/left now that Trump/we disrupted it and disagree.

For all my pessimism, the GOPe has been trying to strengthen its position within the party by weakening itself. Like the 40 reps who retired in 2018. Most of them were loyal backbenchers. Many of them have been replaced not by more loyal backbenchers but by more MAGA-aligned reps (surely not all). So, 40 becomes, say, 10 while Trump gains, say, 20.

Plus, no Russian hooker pee dossier.

Trump won't be able to remake the world, but if he is elected, I suspect a more productive Congress. The big wins will probably still be around tax rates, but we won't have 3 years of the GOP investigating Trump for things they know aren't true (since they all had clearances and could see the intelligence that said it was bunk).

Even before this, the Senate was slipping away from the Dems in this cycle. House depends on districts and is far harder to rig and cheat than turning on the urban based cheat machine.

Pretty much, the cheat machine is an urban and inner suburb phenomenon which works for statewide races but not so well for district based races.

411 Though the details differ, this whole getting rid of Biden looks a lot like Nixon getting smoked. Lots of yelling, denial, leaking, backstabbing, stubbornness, and ass covering for best advantage for later when the moment to shove Biden to curb finally arrives. Of course it will be done with high minded principles and soaring speeches about human frailty, saving democracy, and the will of the American people but only as cover for the gutting, blood, and entrails left on the floor. In other words, politics as usual applied to an unusual situation. That it is happening to the Democrat bastards makes it a lovely to thing watch. I sincerely hope this plays out well into next year and leads to at least a decade long Democrat implosion.

Since the left wants spending and the right/America mostly don't any branch can stop spending.

The House can pass budgets without spending they don't want. The Senate can vote down budgets with spending they don't want. The president can veto, or even failing that, just NOT spend allocated funds.

That being said, the 2024 election is a referendum on the Biden admin (whether or not he stays or goes), and comparison with Trump. VP choice is probably going to be more directed toward demonstrated loyalty to Trump and impeachment insurance as Trump is going to have to piss off a lot of the Uniparty and break their rice bowls during the next four years.

Ace: I can't help out with all of them. In Norwegian most of the days of the week have the same etymology as their English counterparts, the word for Saturday being the exception: lørdag. This apparently comes from Old Norse laugardagr, laug "bath" + dagr "day". So Saturday was bath day.

It seems like the Northern Germanic speakers (Norwegian, Swedish, Danish, Faroese, Icelandic) stuck with this, and the rest of the Germanic speakers changed to "Saturn's day" or "sabbath" (e.g., German Samstag, Luxembourgish samschdeg). The only exception I could find is Fridian snoen, from Old Frisian sunna-evend, "Sunday eve".
