The Morning Rant: Minimalist Edition

punk-monkey.jpg

Screwing up domestic policies by embracing an insane pseudo-philosophy is par for the course with the Democrat party. Spend money we don't have? Sure! Push the lunacy of transgenderism (including child mutilation)? Why not! Open the borders to every criminal on earth? Hell yes! Militarize federal law enforcement against political enemies? Duh! Create a seamless vote-stealing apparatus to maintain power? Dude!

And our country has muddled along since 1828 with this malign influence constantly eroding the intent of our founders. The Democrat party protected slavery...both the chattel flavor and the modern equivalent of keeping its pressure groups in financial and social bondage via its expansive welfare state and constant application of the charge of racism.

But we have managed by and large to keep that dirty laundry confined to our domestic political sphere. We tend to unify when foreign affairs come knocking. Sure, we have had idiots at the helm, and our foreign adventures are increasingly driven by grift and graft and nonsensical geopolitical considerations like "Nation Building!" But the defense of America tended to be the primary consideration.

Those days are gone. We have now trotted out the worst failures of our internal political complexities for the world to see. A nodding, drooling, incoherent octogenarian is now the face of America. And worse than that; it is abundantly clear that his junta's goals are not the defense of America and it citizens across the world. No, the overarching goal is a vacuous post-modern "All Countries Are Equal" nonsense, coupled with the original sin of being the richest and most successful country on earth.

That projects weakness, and the world has noticed.

Stone-age Houthis can now control a huge chunk of world trade because they are unafraid of America's might. 7th century savages can rape and murder and kidnap Americans, and our national response is cowardly -- evenhanded in the worst possible way. Our traditional adversaries on the world stage are chipping away at our spheres of influence without a care. Cuba...Venezuela...most of the Pacific...Europe...the Middle East...

And our response is to trot out the dessicated husk that sits atop the aimless and chaotic administrative state that supposedly guides our foreign policy for a politically motivated presser designed to reassure domestic adversaries.

Embattled Biden prepares for leadership test in NATO press conference

President Joe Biden will hold a rare press conference on the sidelines of the 75th NATO summit that the White House has billed as a “big boy” event.

A make-or-break moment, the press conference comes as Biden faces mounting pressure from Democrats to appear in public without the help of a script and former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) encourages her congressional colleagues to provide the president with this week to prove himself after last month’s first debate against former President Donald Trump.

Way to bury the lede!

Never mind that it will be an unmistakable signal that the Commander in Chief is not in control, and America's foreign policy and military are being controlled behind the scenes by a sorry group of political operatives intent upon securing power for themselves, and furthering their own political agendas.

The goal has so obviously changed that it is now unrecognizable. "A Big Boy Event?" What happened to dignity and firm application of American power and influence? What happened to the simple goal of protecting America's interests above all others?

The destruction of America's image and self-image began here, in the minds of our college students of the 1960s, and then in their students as they became professors and high school teachers. Their tentacles have entered every bit of the educational complex, and the explosion of college attendance (driven by the SCOTUS decision in Griggs v. Duke Power) has shifted America from a rational people who eventually lean on their innate good sense to a fragmented society in which a good chunk of that common sense has been destroyed by the idiocy of higher education.

Hopefully the trend away from college as the only path to success will accelerate, and the glut of baristas and part-time web designers will ease...replaced by HVAC techs and plumbers and steamfitters and heavy equipment operators.

You know...the people who are the repository of that famed American common sense!

If America was a serious country we would have been demolishing targets in Gaza on Oct 8 with whatever air and sea resources we have in the area and a deadline to have all hostages returned within the time it would take a flight of B-52s to get to Gaza from Diego Garcia or else all Gaza would be literally flattened.

Doesn't defecate on stage?

I think it's obvious that Biden will be on his full drug cocktail today, but I seriously doubt even a highly successful event, whatever that means, will be enough to convince the electorate that he's in charge.

My guess is that Cabinet members will start resigning.

The problem is that the Democratic establishment wants Joe to stop running for President, while continuing to be President for the next six months.

Hard to distinguish the two if Cabinet members start quitting.

40 my take on the Big Boy presser, from late in art thread -

It will be semi-scripted. First or second Joe will select a reporter who has agreed to ask a question about his debate performance and if he's still running. (If it's not first, the first will be a scripted question about NATO and Ukraine and the dangers Trump poses to them.) The scripted debate and campaign status question will be a set-up for Joe. Joe will burn time repeating his current mantra that he bad night and is in the race all the way. Then he'll burn more time reciting his standard anti-Trump stump speech. When he gets more questions about the debate, unscripted, he'll say he already answered them, then say he will only take questions about other topics.

Could work. Depends on how frequently he goes head-down for a long time reading his note cards and the binder that will be on the podium before he enters. And on him not going into Blank Brandon-face mode.

42 I've been wondering what the next turn of the screw against Joe by the Democratic establishment will be.

This guy provides a list of options, although I doubt the Dems would actually resort to them.

Here’s How Dems Can Force Biden Out

All House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer – or, again, a sufficiently large cadre of Democratic members in both chambers – need to do is communicate to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue that they have suddenly been convinced to cooperate with the impeachment inquiry into Mr. Biden’s conduct already underway by House Republicans.

Removing, concealing, and unlawfully sharing confidential documents, which the Special Counsel acknowledges would justify prosecution were it not for Mr. Biden’s sodden cerebral state.
Receiving cash wires from family members approximating the “10% for the Big Guy” shortly after their transfers from foreign entities.
Boastfully withholding aid to Ukraine to force the removal of a prosecutor investigating Hunter....
and etc.

That being said, there is a good spot at the James Madison Library of Congress building for lunch. Cafeteria on the top floor which is almost never crowded and few tourists know about.

Many of us are pretty introverted. I, myself, meet up with people exactly once per year. As a result, and in understanding, if we see people at the MoMe sitting alone, particularly if we don't visually recognize them, we'll leave them be in case they're trying to re-center themselves.

When you're ready for a bit of company, just walk up to pretty much any small group - optionally listen to what they're talking about for a minute - introduce yourself and join the conversation. No one has kicked me out of one yet.

86 Here’s How Dems Can Force Biden Out

All House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer – or, again, a sufficiently large cadre of Democratic members in both chambers – need to do is communicate to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue that they have suddenly been convinced to cooperate with the impeachment inquiry into Mr. Biden’s conduct already underway by House Republicans.

LOL. If I were Joe, Hunter, or DOCTOR Jill, I'd laugh and say "bring it".

The Democratic establishment really wants to have an impeachment inquiry in the middle of a Presidential election?

If massive unrest starts under the post election, pre- inauguration president, what does the military do?

The officers and senior enlisted are all compromised.
They will do nothing. But the bulk of the enlisted, and maybe a combat-vetted 0-6 or two can make the difference in the National Guard.

Then there is the state guard, and the police that want payback for Soros prosecutors. Finally, the citizens. Open season means unrest ends.

112 One other thing to keep in mind - no individual Dem pol really matters. The current argument as to whether Biden, Harris, Newsom or someone else would be the best standard bearer for the Dems but they will all govern exactly the same.

But Trump? He matters as an individual. There are a couple of guys that could maybe perform the same role but I suspect when the Dems get desperate enough they'll go down the assassinate route - why do you think they keep talking about pulling his Secret Service protection?

No. It is because most of the officeholders, party officials, and donors are to the left of the base voters and the GOPe leaders do not want the base to have nice things. They want them to shut up and allow the looting of America to continue.

160 I want many years positive the idea of investing in US forever stamps. Just before posting this, I looked up the price and it is shocking, but really not shocking. I said on this site many years ago by US stamps the forever stamps because they only go up in price. Never do they go down. I don’t know the legality of buying stamps and then selling them to someone else, though I can’t think of why that would not be legal. To me is probably one of the few investments where you are sure the price of the item will go up over time.

165 And I have sympathy for people who have the awful experience of having their loved one "slip away" mentally and be unpredictable and sometimes violent because of dementia. But those people had to often struggle with care emotionally, physically and financially and their loved ones were decent people. Jill and Biden and other Dems are doing this for the power and the money when they have many financial resources to get him off the stage completely, aside from the fact that "The Lorx himself will have to come down tell me to get out of the race." The Lord is not here to fulfill your commands, Joe. It's hubris.

184 Pssst.....Texas and other states sued multiple blue states for violating their own election laws in 2020 but SCOTUS said nah bro, no standing. Not much anything can do about vote fraud if it is a blue state.
Posted by: Mister Scott

I can discuss original jurisdiction for you but it was always a legal reach because quite literally due to precedent. Scotus involvement in Florida in 2000 was in one state. Here was a case involving multiple states and the Roberts Court, never a brave one, blinked.

Time was what the Trump legal campaign lacked and wild charges by the likes of Sidney Powell and a clueless Rudy meant that the best legal challenge avenues went nowhere with this group. Instead, the Trump legal campaign should have focused on specific states like GA, WS, and AZ and trying to prove fraud using state laws and elevating to specific federal district courts as did the GWB campaign did in Florida 2000.

For whatever reason, the GOP legal eagles types (highlighted by the Powerline boys lawyer types), simply do not want to support someone they view as icky. Trump would be better served by blue collar lawyers than Ivy leaguers.

In the 1970s, they created a list of the top tech stocks and they called them the nifty 50. By the year, 2000 most of those stocks had gone bust.

Let's hope, for it's a fight 4 the souls of the major unions now, too. The BAs & other higher echelon are embedded in politics - local, state & federal - & like many civil servants, can follow the paths of money & least resistance.

College enrollment is falling though debt owed is rising. Wealthier areas may not contribute towards community colleges, adult education programs. The 'good' trade schools/colleges - so difficult to get into - are also very political in their selection of students.

We have to go beyond the ridiculous deplorable labels, DEI/CRT selection processes, and so on. We've rural areas that have largely been forgotten though their children are no lesser than all others.

Teach: Like civil service, federal takeover of student lending, part of the legislation creating the Affordable Care Act, 2010, binds one to government choices, oft forever.

The power of a well placed leak or a Colonel Bearclaw type whistleblower is still a potential shoe to drop if the Bidens refuse to do as expected of them. That Clooney Op-Ed might as well as been straight from the mouth of Bathhouse Barry. There is plenty of Biden clay laying around that could be molded into a political funeral urn. Somebodies or some agencies somewhere have plenty of political or bribery receipts that could bury him and if the don't quite have them, no worries, a smear campaign is well honed skill. The odds of Biden making it to the election seem slim.

So, my initial "investment" is up over 700%, not too shoddy. But the thing is, at those prices you don't dare sell it. I don't tell where it is, but, it's locked up.

To people -- and there are many -- who say "If there's a crash, what are you going to do, take an ounce of gold to the store and try to buy bread?" Biden did not survive 50 years in DC (like that other bloody reprobate Mitch McConnell) by being a patsy. So, for every smear and leaks that the Dems use, Biden and his faction know that the other Dems are doing bad shit too and can leak that. Obama and secret gay affairs plus his illegality in spying on Trump, Pelosi and her naked corruption of insider trading plus her deviant hubbie plus commandeering the US military, Clooney's wife as a beard, etc. etc.

Sadly, Himself and I have moved several miles south of where we used to live. It was really impressive when 4014 announced its arrival and departure. That whistle damn near shook the foundations of every house in the neighborhood. You couldn't mistake it for any other engine.

Neither one is in operation anymore, but U.P. has both a Big Boy and a Centennial engine parked on a bluff overlooking I-80. I remember the day U.P. moved both engines from their old location to the new one. One of them got stuck trying to make a 45 degree turn. They worked all night to get it headed in the right direction. My understanding is that it cost John Kenefick over $1m to get those engines up on that bluff.

295 King has described his subconscious as "that guy who really runs the writing factory around here." His later works are not always as entertaining, and he's fallen victim to Trump Hate, but when he was on his game in the '70s and '80s, he produced some great stuff.
Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius
=======
I find King's works as depraved, nihilistic, and nasty stories about equally compromised people, perhaps. Then again, I am a Christian non deviant and happy despite my ailments which King truly hates.

But as always, tastes differ and change over time and predicting whether someone will be read one century from now is a mug's game.

We still read Edgar Allan Poe but whether King gets to that status, we will be dead and composted by then. So no need to really argue or analyze it because it is unknowable how the future folks will treat King's works.

Kubrick's "elevator full of blood"? Not scary.

The 1997 version was filmed right there in the Stanley Hotel, the place where King and his wife stayed on vacation after Carrie became a hit, and the hotel inspired the novel. At the time, a local Denver station ran a contest: The winners got to spend the night in the hotel, and watch part two of the mini-series right there in the lounge where scenes were filmed. That must have been terrific.

Wings (originally Great Planes) aired on Discovery Channel (not A&E, as I had thought!) from 1988 through at least the 90's. It also had spinoffs, so you know, whatever.

Trump needs to keep himself in the news because otherwise all the D drama could take too much attention and leave everyone waiting for some grand exciting climax with Trump becoming a sideshow until they're ready to deploy their next lie against him.

Winning or losing, why let them completely control the narrative?

He did it to Hillary who was inevitable and now everyone in hindsight thinks she was weak and feeble and a terrible candidate. Which is hilarious to me because I literally said at the time it would happen, to all the people who called me stupid for saying Trump could and would beat her.

TV had "Nam vet" in some characters' backstories (Magnum P.I., IIRC, was one) but obviously played different angles.

Anyway, every so often "bleak" becomes a major motion picture vibe. In the 70's there was a lot of dark and gritty and dystopian and then Star Wars comes along and things get fun again in the 80's, but you still have serious/dour Oscar-bait types in the mix, too.

360 Speaking of cars, if you actually have need of a truck to tow, or would like an engine that might go the long haul without shitting itself to death, you should probably be paying close attention. You can't even get a vanilla V8 in most 1/2 ton trucks anymore - we're moving up to 3/4 or 1 tons to avoid the turbo and GDI nonsense, even though we prefer smaller rigs.

Still hoping Trump pulls it out on November but if not the writing is on the wall. Fuel efficiency standards are about to skullfuck the vehicle market hard if not stopped.

Shelter, food, and water are the sine quo non of life during an apocalyptic event. Gold (and silver) is mainly useful as a basis for trade after teh crash but not in the neatly formed ingots. Old worn coins valuable only for silver/gold content are what the Argentina dude recommended after the peaceful economic collapse in Argentina in 00's. Fresh silver or gold makes you are target for robbery figuring you got more of it.

Same, but the author will have some insights, he'll also miss some undercurrents or subtext he unconsciously put in there.

But then the critics get ahold of it and let's just say they can be wrong, too.

Emigres from places like Germany etc to other nations were shorn of a lot of their wealth upon arrival at new countries.

I suspect the coming collapse will more resemble the Great Depression worldwide with the spicy addition of warfare/internal unrest breaking out in specific areas where old grievances will get hashed out.

I follow emigre stories every now and then to places like Belize, Honduras, etc. and often those turn into nightmares simply because the newly arrived wealthy are viewed as prey for the locals.

It's the death by a thousand regulatory cuts, nickel and diming. Fewer and fewer people would be able to afford new equipment, or to keep older equipment running.

This is already happening with furnaces and residential AC units via efficiency mandates, bans on certain materials, etc. And I guaran-fucking-tee you that far fewer people driving clunkers now have working AC on account of the succession of ever more expensive automotive refrigerants and all the regulatory BS attached to them. This has been going on for years.

They'll also attack it by indirectly coercing "smart" thermostats - fewer people will be able to afford power without the thermostat discounts, and therefore lose autonomy on how they use their AC. All those suckers locally had their thermostats turned up here the other day, for example.

Yep, you can't just go some place cheap where you have no connections. If you do it, you need to have enough to pick a nice place and not be broke after you get there. There is a specific sort of calculus to "how bad is it going to be if I stay" vs "how much will it suck to start over"

Posted by: somedood at July 11, 2024 12:20 PM (MCFC3)

389 Many of us are pretty introverted.

Thanks, but the truth is trying to give me social advice is like me trying to give an average person advice on how to design a computer. If that section of the brain isn't present, it just isn't there. There is nothing wrong with somebody who can't design a computer, they just don't have neurons available to do that kind of work. Same thing with me socially; the neurons just aren't there to process that kind of thing. Everyone has about the same number of neurons, nobody is "smarter" than other people. God only gives each of us so much of the picture of existence.
