  • Everything new is old again: A critical vulnerability in OpenSSH that was fixed all the way back in 2006 is back again. (ZDNet)

    Oops. Also, fuck.

Dubbed regreSSHion - it has a cute name, so you know it's serious the bug lets you log into a server by not logging into it.

That is, you start the login process repeatedly - a hundred times in parallel, if you can - and never complete it, and attach a sneaky payload that has a tiny chance of blowing up on the target server when your login times out.

On older 32-bit systems it takes a few hours on average for this to work.

On 64-bit systems it's more complicated to exploit and would take a week or more of constant effort; since the bug has only just been reported nobody has demonstrated a successful attack against a 64-bit system yet, so it may take even longer.

Reviewing all the servers at work turned up one vulnerable system; every other server was properly locked down. I don't know who set it up, but I curse their name. Whatever it is.

9 Evening and morning to all the early risers and late toilers!

From what I understand, too, the part of Chile where most of the Chileans live has a stretch with the same basic climate as Southern California, the western edge of a continent with a big ocean just to its west and located at about 35 degrees from the equator. South Africa and Perth, AU, are other examples in the south, and the Mediterranean Sea area in the north.

So naturally people want to live there -- and there is some tourism, combined with skiing availability in the Andes.

SF writer Larry Niven suggested it was a near-worldwide civilization ca. 12,000 BC that used magic as we use oil and electricity. Then the mana ran low, the finite substance in the air and rocks and men that powered magic, and magic stopped working. The spells that held Atlantis above the waves failed and the continent sank, unicorns stopped sprouting horns and became horses, the merpeople became dolphins, etc. A good explanation of why we still talk about magic -- because it once worked.

16 Morning all!

From the battery article...

"Jack Evans, a motoring specialist at Blackball Media, welcomed the news about Nyobolt’s battery, which was tested on a track Thursday using a 350kW DC ultra-rapid charger of the kind that is hard to find on UK roads.

“The units used to charge the Nyobolt battery are few and far between in the UK, so in order for this to really make an impact, there needs to be an increase in the provision of ultra-rapid chargers,” he said.

Shivareddy told CNN that the number of fast chargers was rising both in the US and the European Union, and that he expects to “pretty much have them everywhere” by the end of the decade."

This is a company based in England. I don't think Shivareddy has a clue on the amount of land in the US. Also that the power system in most countries will not be able to handle that many rapid chargers.

Posted by: Bruce at July 03, 2024 04:58 AM (n02sW)

17 Also the amount of copper thieves in the Urban areas

Posted by: Bruce at July 03, 2024 04:59 AM (n02sW)

18 This electric car battery takes just four minutes to charge.

So, you get approximately 150 miles range before you need to find a supercharger which doesn't exist to deliver electricity which doesn't exist to charge your car battery which employs a material which is generated at only 5% of current materials.

While, if true, this is a tremendous breakthrough, it still means that trillions of dollars of infrastructure investment would be needed before this would be even remotely practical.

34 Magic is an obsolete term for what might be called the manipulation of energy, which was well known far back into prehistory. Technically it's just another name for physics and engineering. The basis of so-called Alchemy, which has been misunderstood as some search for The Philosopher's Stone, is the manipulation of motive energy: physical engineering with a different name.
Polytheistic gods' roots are anthropomorphized natural forces, and the 'myths' are mostly mnemonic devices to relay informational history. People get all worked up about mythologies and folktales and Magic but it has solid, practical roots and really isn't hard to understand at all.
My two cents.

36 “ However, new tech will allow companies to expand GPU memory capacity by slotting in more memory with devices connected to the PCIe bus instead of being limited to the memory built into the GPU — it even allows using SSDs for memory capacity expansion, too.”
- Tom’s Hardware

Isn’t this kinda sorta done with iGPUs, already?
With the newer AMD APUs (a 8840HS for example) you go into the BIOS and set the iGPU up to reserve anywhere from 2GB to 16GB or more, depending on available RAM, of system memory, to the dedicated GPU. I think Intel’s new Meteor/Lunar Lake chips work the same.

Of course, DDR is nowhere near as fast as integrated GDDR but when you’re more worried about capacity over latency, I guess that doesn’t matter.

I assume, in this case, firms will be able to use PCIe RAM or SSD add-on cards to expand VRAM in AI servers?

It would be awesome if this filters down to the consumer level. People will be able to buy a a decently clocked GPU and then add some more memory on top of the paltry offerings on most low to mid-range cards.

Although I think lower end cards will vanish if, as the rumors suggest, AMD’s new Strix Halo APUs can really hit 4070 level performance.

38 Modern models have shown so-called Magical rituals work as often as they don't through the simple elimination of randomness: it's a form of experimental process. Magical rituals that don't 'work' are discarded or escalated, and when one works more or less consistently, it is codified.

45 The issue with Magic and its basis in energy manipulation is the recognition of balance: the Laws of Thermodynamics, which have been known far, far back into Time, just using different terms. "Energy can be neither created nor destroyed' is not any kind of revelation. Where issues come in is, if you want something, you must give something in return: there are no free rides, no gifts, ever. So if you want success in something, the best thing to do is sacrifice something valuable: hence, escalation: sacrificing children to Moloch. It's not hard to understand, it's enacting laws of energy exchange.
It's where the 'modern' West has ended up after discarding God.

57 With this Klimate Kult we've all ended up right back where we started: a pack of Pagans worshiping motive energy: the Sun, Wind, Lightning, Water.

Solar, Wind farms, Electricity, Water conservation. But instead of it being an expression of a Supreme Being or a gift from God, it's self-contained: Energy is only itself and is not an expression of a higher Being. So everything, just like before, degenerates into a series of escalating exchanges of Energy and of Power, unvarnished, unconstrained, as Energy is amoral; as is Power.

'According to the terms of SCOTUS' decision, Biden doesn't have to wait for anything. He can issue fiats, formerly AKA executive orders. One to expand the Supreme Court, and another to impose binding ethical standards and term limits on justices.
But he’s too noble to do so. Unfortunately.'

'As a former staff attorney for the US Courts, I’m grieving.'

'I doubt the six traitors of this alleged "court" would have much ability to tell President Biden he doesn't have immunity if they were sitting in the clink after he arrested them for treason, or -better - were laid out in their coffins after he ordered their assassination.'

95 From what I understand, too, the part of Chile where most of the Chileans live has a stretch with the same basic climate as Southern California, the western edge of a continent with a big ocean just to its west and located at about 35 degrees from the equator. South Africa and Perth, AU, are other examples in the south, and the Mediterranean Sea area in the north.

So naturally people want to live there -- and there is some tourism, combined with skiing availability in the Andes.

Hello, JQ! One of the main reasons why I want tile or hardwood floors in my house-to-be is so I won't have to scrub and clean carpet after the cats. Not to mention that, since I left home in the mid-'70s, where we had linoleum tile, I've almost always lived in carpeted places. I'm over that.

Long ago I did have an apartment in an older area of town here with wood floors. Then, I was bothered because my cat's fur clumps all collected in the corners and/or blew around on the smooth floors, and I was always vacuuming . . . but I had two jobs then. Once I'm retired, and have a Swiffer or something, it won't matter so much.

Long ago, the late Eighties, my employer had a deal with the local Sam's Clubs: You showed your ID card and you could shop without being a member. Total time spent from parking the car, getting what I wanted, getting a slice of pizza and getting back to my car: 20 minutes. I was kind of proud.

Trump's sentencing in the ridiculous "hush money" case is delayed until September.

The "Who" made claim that the new boss will be the same as the old boss, but there's no way the new Sheriff is the same as the old corrupt Sheriff.

I expect every case to be delayed, delayed, delayed.

175 There are more than a few people here that were certain Trump will do jail time. I get the pessimism but don't underestimate the Donald. If they were to send him to jail he would get a parade and sendoff like a hero.

About half an hour later, the day was pretty much ruined.

185 Not a big fan of the ice storms but I like having snow from fairly early Nov through Jan-Feb for certain, winter activities.
After that, give me a nice, long spring. Through July would be nice but sadly, not much chance of that.
Posted by: TeeJ at July 03, 2024 06:44 AM (xZpzx)

Even just the few days of snow we get every few years makes me think "Nope- even if we were prepped for this would not enjoy it for an extended period."
I have great admiration for our Northern neighbors who brave their winters...

Zoos are controlled, with the animals in enclosures. Walmart and (I guess) Costco have the animals roaming free.
