Each quarter, my company Sift produces an index report to better understand the latest online fraud trends, including how businesses and consumers are affected, emerging fraud tactics, and how fraud impacts consumer behavior when making purchases online. For the past two quarters, we’ve seen a surprising generational divide emerge: Gen Z— born between 1997 and 2012—expresses more willingness than any other generation to commit digital fraud. In Q4 2023, 42% of Gen Zers admitted a willingness to engage in first-party fraud, where they dispute a purchase with their payment provider despite the purchase being legitimate. This was significantly higher than any other generation—the next highest was millennials, with only 22% admitting to engaging in first-party fraud. This quarter, we discovered that 33% of Gen Z respondents either know someone who has participated in payment fraud or have done so themselves. Again, these rates are much higher than other generations. This data might seem sensational, but if we explore it more deeply, it’s very telling. My barber inherited the shop from his dad. Two chair, old fashion barbershop with an absolute killer view of the bay including a telescope mounted in front of the picture window in the front of the shop to see close ups of the boats going by.
We spend most of the time he's cutting my hair talking fishing or lying about other things while the stereo plays blues and older, more obscure rock. Inflation drove his price to $18 bucks this year before I over tip him.

When the WuHan lung rot ensued I became even more of a reclusive individual (nothing changed much) mainly because my longtime barber died. They work perfectly fine, with attachment combs. Just sort of comb your hair with clippers and it won't look too much different than a barber.
Getting a professional cut once in a while will keep it looking better. I also discovered the clippers work as a passable razor for beards, too. They will trim down to a respectable looking 5 o'clock shadow - or getting the deep jungle growth hacked away to a suitable height, if further razor use is considered it will be much easier to get a close shave. Great item to have on hand!

There was an article in the San Francisco paper yesterday about how bad the job market is in Silicon Valley for those with "soft skills" who have been laid off from tech companies.
I still remember the picture of Musk with the hard-core techies after he did the mass firings at Twitter - almost all male, and mostly Asian.

I actually looked for it, couldn't have been a rare book, but I was unable to locate it. There are a LOT of really cool science fiction books from the 30s thru the 60s, mucho movies and toys and the rest of it.
What really made me feel old - I remember when the Saturn V vehicle looked so much more real than the Buck Rogers style rockets and that "styling" in the movies.
Then I watched all these Buck Rogers rockets launch in the last couple years, and land backwards on the ground and the rest of it. Elon Musk noted that stainless steel has unique properties in terms of cost versus strength for making rockets. It's not all that much stronger than aluminium say, at normal temperatures. At cryo temps it's great.

I looked it up a couple of times and I looked it up, not too long ago ago and finally found it. It is a very very short story. It was a magazine article from I think the 50s or 60s. This is back when writers would write stories for magazines, and for some reason this thing a guy wrote decades ago for a magazine is still a thing and has been taught in schools.
I only remembered the most threadbare parts of the story about a kid swimming to a rock. But since I found it again on the Internet, that was a really great story with a really great lesson and example. The thing I love the best about that short story is there were no bad guys, There was a major challenge, and there was human frailty, But unlike almost every story we see today, Everyone involved was trying to do the exact right thing.

And I grabbed the two battery cables, and held them forcefully against the terminals on the battery. Surprisingly, the car started right up! And then he shut it off! I said, "Maybe you should leave it running until we can stick the regular battery back in, so it can get charged?" He thought that was a brilliant idea, so once more I exposed my tender body to the full fury of 12 angry volts, and the car started. We swapped in the dead battery, and it continued to run, and I went on my merry way.

It is weird I remembered just the most threadbare things about that story, but always remembered it. If you didn't see it earlier, Alex Berenson got an email from a neurologist and they talked a bit. He thinks Biden has mid-stage Parkinson's with dementia.
He mentioned something I'd never heard before: "Parkinson's poker face" or facial masking. That's the particular deer-in-the-headlights look Biden displays.
He said at this point, it's progressed enough the drugs aren't working so well, hit and miss, and that in about 6 months, Uncle Joe will need assistance walking. You know a walker.

It must have been a crazy time to be alive - the US government had 15 minutes total "space" time under its belt, having lobbed Alan Shepard into space a little higher than the average fireworks display, when Kennedy gave a speech to congress saying "We choose to go to the moon...." Everybody thought that was nuts. He wanted something that could show the superiority of the free market system, something tangible to show the US was head and shoulders above the Soviet Union in space, though that wasn't evident at all at the time.

as Parkinsons advances there is a hand tremula that becomes a regular motion- it is more of a single hand churning, usually. Lewy Body dementia is similar. My dad had one or the other before he passed, and of course he was never actually diagnosed because it was 2021 and he was locked down into solitary because of covid. Which is why I find it hard to discuss the subject dispassionately

My 94 yr old mother's young girlfriend, only in her early 80s has Parkinson's. No idle tremor. Some people never develop a tremor at all, turns out. Most do but some don't.
Her main trouble was severe orthostatic hypotension. Get up from sitting down, her BP dropped to nothing, and out she went and down she went. Suffered a couple of bad falls, and broken bones.
They couldn't seem to get that under control, but they finally have, mostly.

They had tracked him down, and he was still doing pretty much what he was doing in the 1930s. He needed a guitar to go on tour, and the sponsors took him to a guitar shop and said basically he could have anything he wanted. Martin guitars are renowned (and expensive) but he just chose a mid grade Guild guitar.
He re-recorded some of his early pieces. The difference between the old and new "Stagger Lee" is interesting. He only uses a few chords, but it is very intricate and fast playing, with a beautiful melody line in the 1960s version. He also guested on the old commie Pete Seeger's show, and played "Spike Driver Blues" basically in one chord position - G. But I defy anyone to play like that. He was one of the best in a lot of ways.

True Fact: DeForest Kelley had a small role as a medic in some film 9 years before Star Trek. One of his few lines was, "This man is dead, Captain" spoken to Gregory Peck.
I'm trying to remember, but I think he played a doctor in some other role before Star Trek and did some variation of the "Dammit, I'm a doctor, not a xxxxx".

Problem is that wages have not kept up with the rise in household prices. 1978 median household income was 15K.... now its just a tad under 60K...
So while wages went up 4X... House prices went up 6X.
Car prices are WAYYYY worse... You could get a Hot rod Camaro back then for about 6K.... now its 60K.... 10 times the price.

Well, it wasn't really Roman homos either, it was somewhat modern astronomers trying to use Roman home like calendar cycles. The Julian period is when a cycle of three separate intervals resets. This period is 7,980 (Julian) years long.
The reference epoch for the Julian date is High Noon over the Prime Meridian, Jan 1, 4713 BC proleptic Julian, or Nov. 24, 4714 BC proleptic Gregorian. The Julian date is the number of days elapsed since then.
THe decimal Julian Date was what Gene Rodenberry wanted his "star date" to sound like, which he thought sounded all futuristic and cool.
