you'll want to be taking 24 mg / day for the first three days at least. you can do this with any of those! I usually end up getting the 12 mg pills but you can make it work with 6 or 3 you just take more.
dose one in the morning then dose two in the evening before bed. after three days you can taper to 12mg / day. 3-4 for days at that dosage that's for if you are sick! when I took IVM as a treatment for mRNA side effect I took only 12 mg per day for three months (so one pill in the morning) Posted by: BlackOrchid at June 28, 2024 10:12 PM (s3qiR) 24

Since there was that call from the ISS (claimed to be a drill) with the Captain being given first aid for hypoxia, I suspect the whole crew was talking like Mickey Mouse by the time the docked. Ivermectin is interesting stuff, never mind Covid Wuhan lung rot, it is very useful. I’d want to have some on hand because it is effective at both nematodes and arthropods. Internal and external parasites.
Just reading about that stuff - and the inevitable photos, them helmints is nasty. I remember seeing displays in formaldehyde of some really super creepy stuff. But external parasites too - also effective at fleas, lice, mites, possibly ticks or tick borne diseases, mosquitos and malaria etc etc. Mange and/or scabies. Rosacea. There’s a reason Satoshi and Campbell shared a real Nobel prize in Medicine for it. I suspect that’s why it was looked at early on in the epidemic, it may be one of those medications that works. Another anti-malarial chloroquine was found useful (supposedly) as well. Military might remember that as the “orange M&M”. A lot of our deployed soldiers and sailors since world war I and beyond came hole with all sorts of “fevers of unknown origin” and a “deworming” or parasite eradication regimen makes more sense to me, if you’re gonna take it. Basically a couple alternate days dosage, and re-dose again in about 2 weeks. Parasite life cycle Posted by: Common Tater at June 28, 2024 10:41 PM (Xn4AZ) 97

Fenneman was in a lot of radio programs. He advertised Chesterfields, back when tobacco wasn’t illegal, people smoked on Elevators. Nurses in hospitals had a cart where they would sell them to patients. One ciggie commercial had Mel Torme suggest “Pick up a carton for the weekend!” which even back in my prime would have found some tough sledding.
This ties into parasites, too! Turns out nematodes don’t much care for Nicotine. The US Army Survival manual TM suggests eating 1 or 2 cigarette contents to shock a tapeworm if in an extended search and evasion scenario. Hot spicy foods helps keep parasites from getting a holt of ya in the first place, but they won’t get rid of them. Probably pisses ‘em off, which is better than nothing. That shit needs to DIE! You are correct, though at the time of Jesus's birth he was known as Caesar Augustus. Anyone calling him Octavian then was lion food by sundown.
Posted by: Gref at June 28, 2024 11:15 PM (5fDan) Not unless they were trying to insult him; and usually not even then. The whole reason Augustus' power grab worked was that he tried hard not to look and act like a despotic monarch. He liked to use the title 'princeps,' for 'first among equals,' which is why historians refer to the first stage of the Roman Empire as the Principate. "Augustus" started out as just an honorific; as far as we know, no one during his lifetime used that as his new personal name. Posted by: Dr. T at June 28, 2024 11:22 PM (jGGMD) 184

Also, as best we can tell, Augustus didn't really go by "Octavian" either during the mature phase of his career, but that was mainly tactical; it was his family name, and a respectable one, but the Caesar name he'd inherited by virtue of adoption by Julius was obviously more useful politically, so he went with that most of the time.
If you referred to him as "Octavian" during his lifetime, other Romans would probably have said, "Oh yeah, you mean our new imperator," and left it at that. Posted by: Dr. T at June 28, 2024 11:27 PM (jGGMD) 195

Posted by: Weirddave at June 28, 2024 11:25 PM (df/te) WD, the Onan genset I offered to you got a bath in motor oil the other night. My power went out, and I hooked up my little Coleman genset, with the 8 HP Briggs and Stratton engine. It started on the second pull of the rope. Ran fine, until I noticed the lights in the outer basement were flickering badly, while the ones here in the office (and the computer) were rock steady. Went out for a look-see. Generator is chugging away, in huge puddle of oil, and the oil filler cap on the crankcase is lying on the ground beside it. And a light show of sparks is happening inside the end cover of the generator itself. I shut it down right then and there. The Onan genset was right there, and got a shower of oil all over it. (I am guessing that a solder joint on one of the 3 panel fuseholders on the Coleman went bad, causing the arcs and flickering lights, and the erratic load created a vibration that made the oil filler plug unscrew itself.) I have some pressure washing to do, so I will drag out the pressure washer, and do both gensets, and the vehicle that wanted washed. Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at June 28, 2024 11:34 PM (cTcTP) 202

WeirdDave, 226 pounds is approximately 103 kg. You want a daily dose of 0.4-0.6 mg per kg. That would be approximately 41-62 mg per day for you. You would take 4 or 5 12-mg pills per day for 5 days. You can get a more exact dose using lower strength pills, but you would have to swallow more pills. The dosage is fairly forgiving. Official nursing guidelines say that as long as the dose you take is within 10% of the exact dose calculated, you are fine with these types of medications.

Dukakis is still eligible to run, btw, assuming he's on the green side of the grass. He is, I think, one of the reasons politics is so totally scripted and utterly fake now, they can't or don't want to leave anything to chance because one slip-up might cost the election.
He was asked (Bernard Shaw?) can't remember who, something something about what if a burglar raped and killed his wife. Something like that. He went off on this erudite intellectual tangent as one might (I guess) in some philosophical discussion. But it came off as kind of creepy or ... weird. Maybe a tough question to answer, too. But they asked it, and that's what happened. Didn't help his campaign. The press likes their role as kingmakers and king un-makers I guess. A lot of this push of naming names by Democrats right now is sheer protection of their brand. They're letting everyone know their party is strong. Because they looked disturbing and weak last night.

If Dems were going to make a switch, they needed to start months ago. Instead , when Obama came out today and Biden is still our nominee, that was orders being given to he party faithful. Every loyal party member is now commanded to pretend last night did not happen and to never speak of it again.
Among other things, I think that Democrats have now collectively decided to let this campaign have a Thelma and Louise ending, with Joe and Kamala sitting in the car, laughing and cackling as it flies off the cliff. Posted by: Tom Servo at June 29, 2024 12:15 AM (S6gqv) 270
I watched an interview of Tom Stafford, a NASA Apollo astronaut when he was 89 and he looked .... old I guess, but he talked for about an hour extemperaneously going over the early days of NACA and Mercury and Gemini, and getting into some technical details. It was remarkable I thought. I suppose there's no reason a 90 year old can't necessarily make a fine leader, but that might not be the way to bet with our politicians. Stafford was on his game, still. But he was made of sterner stuff, I think.

Don't piss off the press, either. Carter lost their support when he cut off the free food and drink for the White House pool. They couldn't believe it, thought it was a joke or something. Carter was serious about "cutting the budget" and was known as a really OCD kinda guy. Every windowshade at the WH had to be at the exact same height, uniformity, and he would check this to make sure. Well after austerity measures were implemented, they revealed that the briefcase that Jimmy Earl was carrying so famously to work every day was - get this - Empty. He was just faking it. They're naming all these powerful seeming Democrats, which of course fits with "replacing" Biden. "I'm hearing Whitmer".
And it's all going viral. But it also fits with trying to keep a picture alive of a party that is healthy and strong like ox, so people can look past Biden in a way, and look past what was on display. If that was a Republican last night looking like that, the Democrats would be out in force making him the scion and standard bearer of the Republican party, and assign all those negative qualities to it. They still plan to make Trump the story of the election and then to steal whatever they can't convince. Based on this it's pretty clear to me that Trump is going on at least house arrest. But I wouldn't bet it. I'm 80% certain and that's not enough. Posted by: ... at June 29, 2024 12:21 AM (lX8VI) 275

I had a Biden moment this afternoon myself. I was putting "Freon" (R-134a) in the truck and car. The truck has a slow leak. It'll last a summer, then leak down over the winter. And the car was getting a bit not cool enough. So, I get my gauge set out and hook it up. I hear it hiss as I connect it. But the gauges are reading zero. I stare at it for a minute, wondering WTF is wrong. Then I realized. I hooked it up wrong. The gauge manifold has these stud connectors on the back to "park" the hose ends when not in use (keeps dust out). I got it mixed up and connected the wrong ends. The gauges were just open to air, and the hoses were connected to the blind stubs. I'll blame the heat.... Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (w6EFb) at June 29, 2024 12:36 AM (w6EFb) 301

ON the shuttle, there was a hatch door that could have been opened in orbit. This is a really bad idea. Ordinarily, they didn't worry about it too much. But "payload specialists" as opposed to NASA astronauts were from a different selection process. They had some sort of incident, you can track who it is by the time frame and such. His space experiment failed, and he started sounding somewhat suicidal "I'm not coming back if we can't continue". Apparently studying the hatch intently kind of thing, asking questions about it. Uh-huh.
So Commanders started putting a padlock on that thing as soon as they reached orbit, just in case a passenger, er "payload specialist" wigged out and tried to open the hatch in orbit. One less thing to worry about, so it was probably installed on every flight after that incident, not sure. Posted by: Common Tater at June 29, 2024 01:48 AM (1K8oO) 352

There's some great vintage film (YouTube and Periscope films have some neat stuff) of a "vomit comet" that was testing to see how cats handle weightless environment.
Yes, I thought it was horribly cruel, but .... Well if you've ever heard the story about a cat always lands right side up, the weightless environment makes this problematic. Kitties don't like this. What made it comical, is they had about 5 or 6 of them floating around in different directions. I about pissed myself laughing. Posted by: Common Tater at June 29, 2024 01:54 AM (1K8oO) 356

The parabolic vomit-comet maneuver is interesting. It's powered. It's pretty hard to do free fall in a atmosphere, air resistance and aerodynamic forces, of which an airplane is designed to use. To do the zero-g (briefly, only), you have to make the aircraft follow a parabolic free-fall trajectory. It would not do this naturally. It requires powered flight maneuvers to follow that trajectory. So, during that "zero-g" trajectory, the aircraft is experiencing all kinds of forces. The interior, briefly, will be in a free fall, zero-g, trajectory. Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (w6EFb) at June 29, 2024 02:01 AM (w6EFb) 360

Just looked this up. There is apparently some commercial zero-g vomit-comet using some Airbus aircraft. It's a tourist thing. Pay to ride a zero-g experience. It takes 3 men at the controls. Each man monitors one of the three axes. Get the accelerometer on your axis as close to zero as possible. Well, it's not exactly that. One man does pitch, the other does roll, and the third does engine thrust and everything else. Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (w6EFb) at June 29, 2024 02:07 AM (w6EFb) 362
Here's the typical flight. You start climbing at just the right trajectory. When you get to the top, you then simulate a parabolic free-fall arc. You've got to keep the nose of the aircraft following that arc. And keep from rolling. And then you adjust engine speed to make sure you follow that parabola exactly. You can only do 20 to 30 seconds of that zero-g trajectory. Anymore, and you'd get in trouble trying to pull out and level off. On that Airbus "Zero-G", the leveling off pulls 1.8g. If you do more than the 20 - 30 seconds of zero-g trajectory, you pay for it in terms of the g's you're gonna pull levelling off. Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (w6EFb) at June 29, 2024 02:18 AM (w6EFb) 369

>>All about blood pressure, flow and vasodilation, right?
Pretty much. There's also direction. You can stand more g's "lying down" that upside down. There's a reference there. Imagine you're sitting in a seat. Positive g is accelerating "up", ass in the seat. In that orientation, positive g pulls the blood away from your head. Negative g pushes blood up into your head. This latter is bad. Blow out your eyeball capillaries and such. Negative g is accelerating down, ass pulling off the seat. Then sideways g. Humans can stand more positive g that negative or sideways. You can look that up. Anyway, the best position for pulling high g's in the "couch" the astronauts used. You're lying down, and the g is "down" relative to your plane of lying down. I was looking this up. An untrained person can stand between 4 - 6 positive g's without blacking out (and this for "short" periods, not long term). Negative and sideways would be much less. A trained person, with a g-suit, can stand 9g positive for the same short duration. Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (w6EFb) at June 29, 2024 02:46 AM (w6EFb) 374

Off on the g tangent. Z-axis, head to toe, y-axis, sideways, left to right, x-axis, front to back, belly to spine. G-tolerance is good along the x-axis. It's piss poor for negative z-axis, toe-to-head, blood pushed up to your head, a little better for y-axis, sideways, much better for positive z-axis. So best position for pulling g's is lying down perpendicular to the direction of acceleration. Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (w6EFb) at June 29, 2024 03:14 AM (w6EFb) 376

Also, got off on a tangent about the zero-g vomit-comet maneuver. The perfect such trajectory is symmetric about the apex. Here's how it goes. You're in level flight. Everyone is feeling 1g inside, as normal. You're at constant altitude, flying level. Lift is just cancelling gravity. Everybody's ass is being pulled down at 1g, just like sitting on the ground. Now, you go nose up and start climbing. The perfect vomit-comet trajectory will be symmetric. You pull 1.8g in that climb. Now, at the right moment, you back off the throttle. You want the center of your aircraft to follow a perfect free-fall parabola. During that backing off, you've got to keep the nose of the aircraft just so, pitch vs time, and you've got to keep the roll dead constant. Now, aerodynamic forces will be pushing down more that gravity, so you've got to keep thrusting up enough to just cancel that excess. The center of the airplane must follow the free-fall parabola. But you've got to keep the nose pointed tangent that trajectory the whole time, otherwise some forces are going to buck you. You get to the top of the parabola. If you kept the nose just right, you're now level... Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (w6EFb) at June 29, 2024 03:39 AM (w6EFb) 379
Now, you're level. You've then got to go nose down, and start diving. You've got to now thrust down, as air resistance and lift is now bucking you. You want to keep the center of your aircraft on that perfect free-fall parabola. Maintain pitch, and thrust downwards accordingly. And keep roll steady. You follow that path until the symmetric point, and the level off, pulling 1.8gs to do so until you reach level flight at the same altitude you started your climb at. That's the perfect vomit-comet trajectory. Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (w6EFb) at June 29, 2024 03:43 AM (w6EFb) 380

I was bad to get car-sick as a kid. The trouble is your inner ear. That's sending signals to your brain about motion. Not a perfect 3-axis accelerometer by a long shot, but kinda-sorta. Your eyes are watching things. If your eyes are say looking at something relatively stationary inside the car, like reading a book or something, you've got problems. Your ear and your eyes are in conflict with the signals they are sedning to your brain. That's the cause of the motion sickness. When I'm doing the driving, there is no problem at all. Put me in the back seat, and that's the worst. I need to keep my eyes looking at where we're going, and see the bobbing and weaving, so's it agrees with my ears. Otherwise I get nauseous.
