Apparently they're going to make a thing of this, claiming this or that was a cheap fake, and I'm assuming the purpose behind that is to plant the idea in the minds of the nitwits. So when one of theirs is caught on tape, it's cheap fake, and at the same time they'll capture, say, Trump on a golf cart, saying something to caddies, and somehow they'll slip the N word in there.

Or something like that.

106 That right there was mainstream late 60’s culture, TV, and music right there. People today think it was all riots and hippies and Woodstock, but that was really only a small part. For most people it was just what you see right there in that video. I remember our main family room table, where we ate, was this lime green circular laminate with a giant flower on it. In hindsight it was the tackiest thing possible, but everyone said it was super cool.

108 Liberace helpfully looks into the camera to let us know he is "Turning on, tuning in, and dropping out". You know the official Time-Life Henry Luce narrative. Your corporate paymasters want you to fry your brain on government acid. For singing and dancing acts, all Sixties variety shows had the goddamndest weird background assemblies and props. 126 I haven't been able to banish this from my mind since I first saw it, so I may as well post it again.

That's the Silents and Boomers. The same generation that thought green was a great kitchen appliance color, and shag carpet was awesome. They also thought fucking outdoors in a mudpit was a fabulous political expression at Woodstock. And when they got slightly older, they really really liked Conway Twitty.

Now that they're near death, and in charge of everything, they like to bitch about how they don't like getting everything just as bizarre as they always wanted. Its their kids fault.

153 The Whiskey a Go-Go was a pivotal spot as well. There weren't a whole lot of big clubs. Vito Paulekas and Carl Franzoni and his merry band of freaks and dancers would show up to lend authenticity to the hippy bands.

If you're gonna have a hippy band play, well, you gotta have a bunch of hippies show up. And they did. The "Freaks" were a big hit, and tourist buses full of gawkers and onlookers would watch the wacked out freaks. The Byrds and many other bands got their start this way. Dave Crosby never once mentioned this in his autobiography. In those days, in addition to scoring the best weed around, he was taken to wearing a black cape everywhere around town.

I love Bing Crosby. He is the #1 on my greatest male singers list.
I like Bowie. His voice was cool and I like several of his songs.

I hate that version of Little Drummer Boy. I'm not a fan of that song to begin with but those two together is just..... Nope.

They say the Eagles are perhaps the most aggressive about taking down their stuff, and now Henley is trying to sue somebody who has a written copy of Hotel Californica.

Idiots. Once the nostalgia tours dry up, you'll be forgotten. And you should be.

Liberace always played some hoity-toity classical music. His audience expected it and most enjoyed it (or believed they should, because hoity-toity). He was smart enough to know most little old ladies and most housewives had never heard those pieces and knew they'd like hearing some. I can't explain why but they did in that period of TV entertainment. Or Liberace would not have performed them.

271 Scene. Open auditions for Liberace's show. 500 kids show up.

Producer: Crap, we've got to whittle this lot down. Okay, kids, who's willing to wear this outfit on national TV? (holds up bell bottoms with flower power appliqués and bright yellow tights) Show of hands.

Okay, fine. You fifteen are in.

272 I would have never guessed the actor Luke Evans was gay by looking at him except that he was an actor.

Must have always been the pitcher, never a catcher.
Might be a difference there.

274 tarsky and Hutch as about the best thing I remember from the 70s. Those vests were cool.

Pretty sure the first Battlestar Gallactica came out in 78' or so. I was in elementary school. Jane Seymour was hot - but I wanted to marry Starbucks girlfriend with the blond frizzy hair.

And then I saw Donna Summer.

285 I used to watch Hee Haw with my parents, never really cared for it.

Later in life I learned the Roy Clark and Buck Owens were two of the best guitarists of their generation. I don't recall ever seeing them play guitar on the show.

I always felt I was gyped.

287 You all remember the slogan for contraceptive pills laced with LSD (LDS as spoken by James T. Kirk)?

'Take a trip without the kids'.

This was a joke back then. The days of demerol/quaaludes/LSD/amphetamine parties .......

288 Roughly a decade after this Liberace performance, the Secretary of the Navy approved a recruiting commercial with the Village People doing their hit song "In The Navy."

It's not clear that SECNAV actually got the point about the Village People and their music, beyond just hearing that the kids like disco, and this is a popular disco group, and they did a number about the Navy.

Or he did, which makes it more disturbing.

289 Roy Clark played guitar all the time on Hee Haw, so did Buck. But Roy did more flashy soloing whereas Buck mainly strummed

Actually this prompted me to play Feeling Groovy. So not so bad.
