THE MORNING RANT: Periodic Update on the EV Follies [6/28/2024]
“Once again, Virginia is declaring independence – this time from a misguided electric vehicle mandate imposed by unelected leaders nearly 3,000 miles away from the Commonwealth,” Youngkin said in a statement. “The idea that government should tell people what kind of car they can or can’t purchase is fundamentally wrong. Virginians deserve the freedom to choose which vehicles best fit the needs of their families and businesses. The law is clear, and I am proud to announce Virginians will no longer be forced to live under this out-of-touch policy.”This is so important beyond the state of Virginia, as those of us who live in free states cannot let the eco-communists in California control and regulate major industries on behalf of the entire country. Virginia’s Democratic Senate Leader, Scott Surovell, protested that not allowing the state of California to establish laws and regulations for the state of Virginia is ”reckless, illegal, and unconstitutional.” Leftists think that freedom-suppressing tyranny is more palatable so long as it is outsourced to a government that the people can’t vote against.
Thieves have been targeting EV charging stations, intent on stealing the cables, which contain copper wiring. The price of copper is near a record high on global markets, which means criminals stand to collect rising sums of cash from selling the material.If the criminals are hungry and need to feed their families, who can complain about them destroying EV chargers to get the valuable copper wire?
The stolen cables often disable entire stations, forcing EV owners on the road to search desperately for a working charger. For the owners, the predicament can be exasperating and stressful.I am strongly opposed to theft and vandalism, but in areas where crime is celebrated and not prosecuted, then I’d much prefer EV charging stations be the criminals’ target than the establishments run by mom and pop shop-owners.

No. EV sales are not slower than I expected. I expected widespread consumer rejection. It was inevitable except to those for whom purchasing an EV is a sacrament required by their devotion to the Sustainable Organic Church of the Carbon Apocalypse. And guess what. EV sales are going to fall way short of the newly adjusted “expectations” of General Motors’ executives.GM Chief Financial Officer Paul Jacobson said the company now expects production of 200,000 to 250,000 EVs this year, down from a previously announced range of 200,000 to 300,000.That is absurd. GM sold a whopping 16,425 EVs in the first quarter of 2024. That annualizes to 65,700 per year, and the early adopters already have their EVs or drive Teslas. There are going to be stories in 2025 about how surprised GM is that EV sales continue to fall short of their expectation of 200,000 per year. It is a disgrace to that once great company that it is publishing projections that are unattainable.
A massive factory fire that began after several lithium batteries exploded has killed at least 22 people in South Korea. "Most of the bodies are badly burned so it will take some time to identify each one," Mr. Kim said, according to news agency AFP. The Aricell factory housed an estimated 35,000 battery cells on its second floor, where the batteries were inspected and packaged, with more stored elsewhere. In addition, it just seems selfish of EV owners that they would put the lives of first responders in danger with vehicles that keep re-igniting while emergency workers are trying to save lives and clear the damage. Our very own co-blogger, Mr. CBD, was caught in a traffic jam in New Jersey due to an inferno involving a vehicle carrier. CBD sent me this picture, which I shared with Iowahawk to see if he could identify any of the vehicle carcasses. Iowahawk politely demurred, but several of his readers identified the vehicle carcass at top right as being a Tesla Model 3. Official figures show that sales for new EVs fell by 30pc in Germany last month, which led to a broader fall of 12.5pc across the Continent.I presume that a great many Europeans who bought their first EV have vowed to never buy another EV, and are going back to gasoline powered cars.
“It’s clear used car shoppers will no longer pay a premium for electric vehicles,” iSeeCars executive analyst Karl Brauer stated in an iSeeCars report published last week. Electric power is now a detractor in the consumer’s mind, with EVs “less desirable” and therefore less valuable than traditional cars, he said.There is a lot going on to drive consumers away from EVs, but the short lifespan of an EV makes a functioning used market almost impossible. An EV has a lifespan of perhaps 10 years before it needs to be scrapped due to the $10k+ cost of replacing its battery. A 6-year-old Toyota has a long life in front of it, whereas a 6-year old Tesla is rapidly depreciating to a value of $0. That negatively affects demand and pricing at each stage of the life cycle of an EV. Consider this headline from NBC last month: “Average U.S. vehicle age hits record 12.6 years as high prices force people to keep them longer” Half of the US auto fleet is older than the expected lifespan of a typical EV. Also, as an EV ages and the range of its battery decreases. Whatever range anxiety new EV buyers might have, it’s worse for those with aging EVs. Meanwhile, as sales of EVs collapse, people seem to be realising that it is ridiculous to buy a car with what is effectively an outrageously expensive shrinking fuel tank.

Roberts wrote the decision as a way to increase court power (honestly, rightfully in this case). Kavanaugh felt more like he had this natural inclination towards status quo when it came to administrative power based on his past on the DC Circuit.

The justices ruled that the charge of obstructing an official proceeding, enacted in 2002 in response to the financial scandal that brought down Enron Corp., must include proof that defendants tried to tamper with or destroy documents. Only some of the people who violently attacked the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, fall into that category.

I still contend that the government's push for EV's is less about "being green" and more about control over the public's ability to move freely about. It's easier to subjugate a society that can't move freely about.
Same goes for the 15 minutes city concept and the push for so-called renewable energy.
It puts the control of movement (and your lifestyle) at the fingers of bureaucrats.

I’m no EV fan but I think the percentage car fires are no higher in EVs than in ICE vehicles. ICE vehicles may even be higher. The big difference is the difficulty in extinguishing them.

Carbon taxes have been proposed for a long time, the previous iteration of "Global Warming" per se. They obviously have this strategy gamed out for years and years, if not even decades and decades.
So why haven't they been concurrently rebuilding power generation infrastructure - base load generation - and upgrading the grid, and upgrading cities. Nary a peep about any of that.
Why is that? Doesn't that seem a little strange to you? "Build it and they will come" doesn't really apply when it comes to basic infrastructure. Everything rolls on diesel, gas, or aviation fuel. Coal and natural gas for base load and peak electrical.

Thing to remember about EVs is that they are not intended as one for one replacements of ICE vehicles.
They have a niche to fill in the vehicular ecosystem and Elon got their firstest with the mostest. He gets that they have a place and Tesla has taken it.
The Left wants EVs to replace ICE on a one for ten basis. You peons have too much freedom with your privately owned vehicles so they will get rid of them. You will have trains to take you to the work camp.

I discovered on a recent project new apartment is Atlanta are now required to have 20% of parking spaces equipped with electric chargers. Last few years is was proved a couple scatter about but now we are talking 20-50 typically . That is a LOT of service capacity and a huge expense for the builder. Add that onto the ever increasing green and energy mandates in new construction with payback periods in the hundreds of years.
But people cannot understand why new housing is so expensive. Oh yeah, must be corporate greed.

Any new building construction for the Federal government or certain contractors the government uses has to have EV chargers in the parking lot. IIRC it was about 10 years ago that rule went into effect.
I can't recall the exact number but the new parking garage at the VA in Dallas has at least a dozen of them. Never seen a single person using them, but they are there on the bottom level taking up a huge amount of parking spaces.

I'm very pleased with the 2016 Buick I drive. Closing in on 80K miles, it has been very cheap to run and insure, with its biggest costs (aside from fuel, which is not bad for a big car) being tires and batteries. And you need to replace those periodically on any car.

If someone can afford multiple cars an EV can make sense. It can also fit a novelty nitch.
This is probably most Porsche owners.

Putting a gazillion flashlight cells in series is just kind of asking for it. Every cell in a battery needs to be closely matched with voltage, age, internal resistance and temperature. Basically want all the individual cells to be at the same level in terms of charge and capacity.
Can get one cell that is "undervolt" or get one cell that is "overvolt" both are bad. Over time all the cells tend to get mismatched.
Old school battery chargers would spool up to 16 volts eventually, to equalize all the cells. Huge battery banks need to be recharged in sets, and how batteries discharge and take a charge all factors. What I'm getting at, this stuff doesn't lend itself to motorists who aren't inclined to be technicians.
It is very difficult to make a "smart" charger. Temperature compensation is a big part of that, defective charging will cause lots of problems.

Even if I planned to continue commuting to work, even if I had a house w/ garage to plug an EV into, even if I could afford insurance on two vehicles, I doubt I'd want an EV. They're more expensive to start with than many gas sedans; they're much heavier, which means more wear on suspension and tires.

I’m no EV fan but I think the percentage car fires are no higher in EVs than in ICE vehicles. ICE vehicles may even be higher. The big difference is the difficulty in extinguishing them.

Coworker drives a Tesla -- not sure which model. But she had to take a day off work to figure out what to do after running over a rock in the road that the Jeep infant of her was able to straddle with its greater ride height. She drove over it and heard it bang along the undercarriage before the car came to a complete stop -- utterly immovable. A week later, and she has a $26,000 battery replacement bill to try to get her insurance company to cover.
I'm surprised the insurance companies aren't losing their shit over the insanely expensive repair costs for EVs and the conflagrations that too often arise from the kinds of accidents that ended the Pinto for far less and nearly ruined the reputation of Chevy trucks.

I can't recall the exact number but the new parking garage at the VA in Dallas has at least a dozen of them. Never seen a single person using them, but they are there on the bottom level taking up a huge amount of parking spaces.

I can't recall the exact number but the new parking garage at the VA in Dallas has at least a dozen of them. Never seen a single person using them, but they are there on the bottom level taking up a huge amount of parking spaces.

It made sense for the Chinese to adopt EVs. They were coming out of 3rd world status, and didn't really need or want to invest in ICE infrastructure. It's actually common for emerging powers to leap frog technology that way.
Problem for the car companies is the rest of the world has a major investment in ICE.
Hence the global warming/carbon BS lie, scam.
Best thing we can do is make China choke on their EV choice.

JOE BIDEN AND DONALD TRUMP debated. America was the loser.

Also, I trialed a Chevy Bolt when I worked for that company. The acceleration on an electric vehicle was unnerving and not very pleasant for passengers. I regret now driving my family around in one.

And that means that a 9 year old EV, even if kept in perfect condition, has only got about a year of life left in it and is probably only worth a few hundred dollars. EV's are the ultimate throwaway consumer good.

I have a Chevy Bolt...wife wanted one, and figured it would be good for all her little in-town trips with the kids. So far, I've been very happy with it. I worry about its long-term viability, but handling, acceleration, reliability and such has been great so far.
I still have an ICE vehicle for my commute and and longer family trips of course.

Kamala is furious that she is not being considered as a replacement (Whitmer and Newsom are). Interestingly my neighbor in East Hampton is hosting the Bidens tomorrow. It will be an important tell if the fundraiser is cancelled.

I’m no EV fan but I think the percentage car fires are no higher in EVs than in ICE vehicles. ICE vehicles may even be higher. The big difference is the difficulty in extinguishing them.

I was a car salesman and manager to pay for college and law school. The dealerships always ran eye-rolling promotions like free hot dogs from a cart, coupons for some dumb shit, crappy little death-trap carnival rides, and -- my fav -- a promotion where a bunch of B-rated WWF stars were there to sign autographs (half of them showed up drunk AF). That's not an option in this case.

The seal malfunctions for the ‘simple’ floods to cause a fire. and I’ve handled dozens of ICE car fires in my career in insurance claims so there are many reasons for causes of fire.
Anyway, again I’m not defending EVs . I just think there are many other reasons to oppose them that doesn’t require using car fires as a reason when ICE car fires are not uncommon.

Speaking of EVs, I was staying in Florence, KY this past weekend and there were a couple of charging stations at the hotel. There is soon going to be a preference cascade and normal people are going to switch to buying EVs. Companies like Ford and VW are trying to figure out how to survive when this happens. GM is so incompetently run that they are just doomed. Toyota looks doomed to me but I could be wrong.
