Humans raise polar bear cubs rejected by their mother.
I'm puzzled by this. Awhile ago, there was an orphaned polar bear cub at the (IIRC, Berlin Zoo). The zookeepers wanted to euthanize him because they said bears raised in this way become psychotic. Public outraged spared the bear, but as the years went by, he did indeed become very dangerous to the zoo staff, and was euthanized. Perhaps it makes a difference if there are siblings. There is absolutely nothing out of control about bears. They are beautiful and doce creatures.
Posted by: Timothy Treadwell The last words at the end of the tape, before the screams and the rending and tearing. Not since the children who mocked Elisha has a bear so relentlessly and vehemently parted a mere mortal from his life. Life, in a universe where heat death awaits all and the endless procession of days must yet have an end, and it is for all of us there. The bear's maw is the abyss that gazes into our soul and says "Sup?" but awaits not the answer. Incisors and talons punctuate the ursine discourse and lend it gravity and meaning of a nature too brutal and exact for mere language. The stain of life is subsumed in the stain of Treadwell, and we are all so many Park Service rangers who must tidy up after his presumption and folly. Meaning fades, but detergent resistant spills of body fluids are a bitch to wipe clean. Against such things the gods themselves labor in vain. Ach, be sure to watch my Loch Ness mockumentary. Danke and keep on trucking. Is that said here anymore? The kids said it once I think. Posted by: Werner Herzog's Grizzly Man Commentary at July 08, 2024 08:28 PM (tmPIh) 122

Posted by: Dash my lace wigs! -- I only know that it's a pyramid scheme, with young ladies trying to get some sort of link or referral from the popular models who then get X% of whatever the nobodies make. And all the sex workers pay the pimp - a man - who owns Onlyfans a big chunk of their subscription income. But there are quite a few sex workers making a lot of money on it, and - it being sex work - the men aren't making nearly as much since very few people want to see a man's hairy butt. Crime goes down significantly in Sweden in the summer.
While a first-cut 'Ron approximation of the reason would be that many are putting in time at the beach checking out up and coming potential members of the National Bikini Team, it turns out this would be incorrect. No, the reason is that many "migrants" are on "holiday" (the way Euros refer to 'vacation') to their "home countries". Apparently, however, the fact that fewer "migrants" means less crime is not something that can be spoken of aloud. Posted by: Duncanthrax at July 08, 2024 08:53 PM (UdzhC) 165

Werner Herzog is alright, I guess.
But I can't really ever forgive him for Grizzly Man. He cut the footage before we could see a hippie retard and his hippie tardwife get apprehended by the razor sharp, merciless claws and teeth of reality. Hearing them be mauled isn't really enough to drive the lesson home for my kids. Posted by: Yudhishthira's Dice I am alright like the rodent who appears at the end of Caddyshack, nicht wahr? This "Only Fans" is something that Klaus Kinski, in his depravity, would attempt. Yet he would thwart himself in his refusal to cater to the fans, his features remaining frozen in a Teutonic obstinate stubborn grimness, primordial and off-putting. They would gaze at him and despair.
Were he alive and attempting such a questionable venture, I would message him and offer fifty dollars American if he would dance like a monkey. A monkey who thinks itself a ballerina, and pirouettes in a mockery of all that is good and decent. He did something like that on the set of Fitzcarraldo. It was unprompted, and we begged him to cease. Darkness stole in upon the rainforest canopy there in Brazil that day. A darkness that was also fey and mincing. Posted by: Anna Puma at July 08, 2024 09:15 PM (5hy2B) Helium - I know few details about anything on Starliner outside the docking system. I can't answer your questions about leak rates and so on. The leaks are in the Service Module segment of Starliner. During entry it will detached from the Crew Module and burn-up. Meaning no helium plumbing ground investigations can be performed. I believe this is why NASA and Boeing are trying to characterize the leak rates in a variety of sun, earth, and deep space exposure positions (i.e, thermal conditions) then attempt to extrapolate the leak rate over a 200 day docked stay. This was the original cert plan anyway - stay docked for about 10 days and extrapolate to 200 days. The current leaks were not expected based on pre-flight testing, so additional on-orbit testing is being done. Posted by: Boo Boo at July 08, 2024 09:31 PM (5fDan) 237

And now we await the ONT, as we await all things, dark and fair, an interminable delay that begins as we are conceived, and, once born, forces us to willfully forget that at all times, half the world is shrouded in darkness. This is inescapable, and the cosmos laughs at our presumption.
Like I laughed at Dark Side of the Moon when it was paired up with Frau Judy Garland's The Wizard of Oz. That was totally a trip. It is not unlike when as a boy, I played Leonard Bernstein's records backwards and discovered, not a message, but a dawning realization, that phonograph needles have their limits, and that the music industry encourages such things to up their sales. I used to work on mechanical devices. Like Garrett loves and gaming stuff. We'd get tech support calls asking why something stopped working. And yeah turning it off then on gets it working again. So "Oh Yeah" it's all good. Though I definitely would not want to get a call-back on that ticket when they're going through re-entry and it's not working again. Posted by: NC Ref at July 08, 2024 09:48 PM (2xCPU) There is some redundancy in all US manned spacecraft systems (except structures, of course!). I can tell you the redundancy of most Shuttle systems but I don't know it for Starliner. I doubt one failed thruster is a flight safety issue. But if the failure cause on the one thruster is unknown, it makes a manager's job no fun. Posted by: Gref at July 08, 2024 09:56 PM (5fDan) 268
I bet the Murdochs keep Hannity and the others in kennels when it isn't yard time or feeding time. Then, the handlers dart them with Xanax to calm them down, wipe the drool from their simian chins, and dress them for the rolling cameras.

YEAH...About THAT BOEING Space capsule and the two astronauts that WERE supposed to fly it back over 2 weeks ago now...I smell something bad up at the ISS...
Hopefully it's not a dead Astronaut. Oh, another launch from Vandenberg Space Port in about...well soon. Posted by: Nightwatch at July 08, 2024 09:58 PM (TDvv2) Posted by: the various Vindmans at July 08, 2024 10:00 PM (XIkHl) 271

Whether bear meat is good or not depends on the time of year it was killed. I was lucky enough to be served meat from a pre-hibernation bear and it was the richest meat I've ever tasted in my life. Oh my goodness. I've also been served a bear stew with meat from a spring, post-hibernation bear. Stringy and sour.

The current leaks were not expected based on pre-flight testing, so additional on-orbit testing is being done.

Is that true of modern solid state equipment, or just old style tubes and capacitors and such? My resources are very old, as in the Fifties old.
