Water Hazards Cafe

ospreydiving.jpg
An osprey catching a meal

I chomp you!

Gonna guess this is scenic Australia.

Orcas playing with their food.

Orcas just swimming towards a human, not meaning no harm...

Orcas have been ramming and sinking boats lately.

On Sunday (May 12), an unknown number of orcas (Orcinus orca) attacked the 49-foot-long (15 meters) sailing yacht named the Alboran Cognac in the Strait of Gibraltar -- a narrow body of water between southern Spain and North Africa that separates the Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea. During the attack, which began at around 9 a.m. local time, the killer whales repeatedly rammed the boat's hull and rudder, Reuters reported.

The yacht's two-person crew radioed for help and was rescued by a passing oil tanker. But the vessel's hull sustained serious damage during the attack and the yacht began to take on water, which eventually caused it to sink, Reuters reported.

The attack was likely carried out by a growing number of individuals from the Iberian subpopulation of orcas -- a group of around 40 killer whales that live off the coasts of Spain, Portugal, Morocco and Gibraltar -- that have been attacking boats across their range since 2020.

Most of the attacks occur between May and August each year in and around the Strait of Gibraltar. However, earlier this year, some of the highly social apex predators were spotted circling a boat in northern Spain, suggesting they have spread out much further and earlier than normal.

They've sunk five yachts in three years.

Can we get them to take an interest in Jeff Bezos...? Maybe douse him with tuna water.

Major water hazard.

A shark stalking through the tall grass.

I must eat you.

The dark and menacing sea.

Baby crocs, doo-doo-do-do-do-do, baby crock! Sound on. They have a strange vocalization. Sounds like Star Wars blasters.

This jellyfish is probably dangerous.

Which of these sea creatures will successfully make off with the food? The answer will surprise you!!!

So I was swimming with some alligators, no big whoop, mindin' my own, and then one of these gators decides to get fresh! Why I never!

A glass octopus.

Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water...

The sea was angry that day, my friends. Like an old man at a diner trying to send back soup.

Why don't you come with me, little girl, on a Magic Carpet Ride...?

24 18 Watched the ocean video. Bless the sailors that endure that. Even the Great Lakes can get sporty. One time, in very foul weather, I took a drive on Presque Isle Peninsula in Erie PA. Huge crashing waves, slate grey skies, howling winds. And then, about at the turnaround point, I see the Coasties heading out in their glorified Zodiac, probably to rescue a fool.

45 The flat earthers are usually moon-hoax nutbars too. I don't get it. I think most of them (actually) are bots, not sure. I've argued with a couple online that seem to be real humans, I guess. It's really weird, because they simply can't accept overwhelming evidence, photographic or otherwise.

It's a good exercise, I suppose, to try and take the other side in an argument or explore how it is we actually can know things, as far as that goes. The moon landings are easily one of the most transparent and documented scientific or expeditions ever undertaken. There's no way to fake half of what they made available in terms of data and materials (never mind the moon rocks). It's just really strange to me that people can deny something right in front of their face.

49 In two hitches in the Corps, I only spent maybe 10 days afloat. I'm not prone to seasickness, but have sympathy for those that get it. One on the "old" salts (probably late 20s, SSgt) on this mini cruise had a few cans of ginger ale and some Nabisco saltines stashed in case somebody got sick. Somebody did, and spent a couple hours barfing ginger ale and saltines. Don't look at the horizon.

55 RE: Orcas playing with their food.

I took a Orca watching trip out Victoria BC and the boat was loaded with Seattle communist liberals whom I anticipated never fully grasped nature is full of violent motherf'ers. We soon found ourselves in a pod of Orcas with everyone shoving and pushing to get pics of the Orcas. It was then when Orca came storming into the middle of everything with a screaming seal in its mouth and proceeded to flip it to another Orca. This triggered a form of Orca volleyball. Soon the boat was dead quiet and the enthusiasm for taking died like that screaming seal. I found the whole thing most interesting

They edited the truck out of the video. Except for the tailgate behind the people in the back, and the back of the cab that the people in front are leaning on. And the truck's shadow.

Or maybe they used a weird fish-eye-type camera lens that made it look that way. But I don't think it would have worked that well.

83 As a dedicated Saltine enthusiast, it is surprisingly difficult to find a consistently good Saltine. The brand names don't have much to do with it, they are never very consistent. And the wankers don't put any coarse salt on them any longer, generally. It's pretty tough to fuck up a cracker, but they have it down. Ritz are pretty inconsistent too, sometimes they are little more than cardboard. Cheese-Its are still pretty tasty. Easy to make, too. I still mourn the passing of the Chicken in a Biscuit snack crackers. They are merely a shadow of their former self, being "baked", the death knell of any quality junk food worthy of the name.

113 Everything is in constant relative motion, and the math nerds can predict where something is gonna be in the future.

That's why all the Astronauts were willing to trust those guys in the "trench" who figured out their trajectories. Because aiming for the Moon 200,000 miles away, once you start getting close, it looks like you're gonna smash right into it at 2000 miles an hour. They had to trust their computers and guidance system and the rest of it. A 60 mile orbit above the surface from that far away is like threading a needle.

I am looking forward maybe to seeing high definition stuff, from low level passes, once they get the retail space exploration going. This would be even more awesome on Mars. There have to be canyons and relief that make Earth look pretty tame, even Grand Canyon or the Himalaya.

129 From The Telegraph:
Joe Biden given one week to stand down

Joe Biden has been told he has a week to win over Democrats or they will move to oust him after a disastrous performance in the first presidential debate.

Party donors and congressmen called on Mr Biden to abandon his second run for the presidency after he fluffed his lines repeatedly and at one point froze completely during the first head-to-head debate of the 2024 election campaign.

I'm not entirely sure who "they" are, but I guess it's the party donors and congressmen. Regardless, once things like this are said, I don't know how they can NOT replace him.

However, there's this: “I give you my word as a Biden [that] I would not be running again if I didn’t believe with all my heart and soul I can do this job. Quite frankly, the stakes are too high.”

Well, he gave his word as a Biden. I'm sold.

139 Bathos vs. Pathos:

Bathos is an exaggerated expression of emotion or sentiment, usually for comedic effect. It is often used to make a joke out of an overly serious situation. An example of bathos would be: "The sky was so dark and gloomy that it made me want to cry... but then I remembered the ice cream in the fridge!"

Pathos, on the other hand, is an emotional appeal that is intended to evoke an emotional response from the audience. It is often used to evoke sympathy or pity, and can be used to persuade an audience to take a particular action. An example of pathos would be: "Just think of all the children who go to bed hungry every night, and the pain and suffering they must endure."

169 There are a number of flat-earther channels on YouTube.

Somehow Youtube decided I wanted recommendations for videos of people debunking flat-earthers. The flat-earthers' "proofs" are ridiculously bad. One guy's "proof" was to construct a sundial on his driveway that looked like a clock face with 12 equally spaces rocks and a pole in the center. Uh, dude, have you never seen an actual sundial?

i'm pretty sure it's just that. no special effects, just how it looks from a phone on a stick. Remember the phone is being held just over the top of the truck, and to the behind, so that's all it sees.

Reading Bari Weiss linked in the sidebar, and...ya know, I like Weiss well enough. I do. But she's apparently been freakin' kidding herself for the last four years. But even setting those aside, full video clips show a man succumbing to the ravages of old age. Be honest, Weiss, you just saw what you wanted to see. Biden is done. He's been done for years. Ain't no more gas in the tank, girl. Sombitch has sputtered to a halt. And he's the Democrats' choice for '24. Suck it up. Ya'll made your bed, now sleep in it.

I would try using a big treble fishing hook as a grapple. Tie a piece of 100 pound test fishing line to the hook, and clip the line to the landing gear of the drone with a clothespin or paper clip, but loose enough that the drone can pull free. Let a couple of feet of line with the hook dangle from the drone. Have enough line on the other side to reach the ground. Fly the drone up to the roof, snag the hook on the tree limb debris, fly the drone free, and haul on the line to pull the debris off the roof.

Posted by: Cannibal Bob at June 28, 2024 09:13 PM (AOdfb)

You can try to break them in like you do a baseball glove unless of course you bought some exotic leather boots. Then you just have to suffer until the leather stretches. Also I always bought mine a size smaller than my tennis shoe size . Haven’t bought a pair in 35 years though.

I think my Ostrich leather boots I wore on a couple of interviews in NYC may have hurt my chances. 😀Live and learn.

Ariats. The closest thing to a pre-broken-in boot. That said, I had to stop wearing boots because of persistent back pain. I'm not quite ready for FJB style outrigger sneakers but they're in my future.

258 Re last thread where someone said "global elites" are dumb. Maybe so, but not sure if it is all dumb, or just being so accustomed to being surrounded by fawning people and getting their whims catered to. I have often wondered why, considering their power exists because of a highly civilized and structured legalistic society...they definitely aren't warlords and dukes material..they keep pushing for societal breakdown. If it happens, their smarter and more vicious security chiefs will end up on top, not them.

Sure, but the rental terms specifically prohibit racing.

Kinda funny to watch the "Trump is a threat to Democracy" crowd openly strategize how to thwart the will of every Democrat who voted in the primaries by engineering a coup at the convention and placing a candidate on the ticket without a single person casting a vote.

Those primary votes are retroactively "populism" and not "democracy."

The latter is good, but the former is doubleplusungood, comrade.

I think there's a lot of projection here. She's not all that. She's not even *biden's caregiver. There's a huge staff of retards to do that. She doesn't want to give that up.

It's pretty much that simple.

Well, that and the grift, corruption and the payoffs.
