23 This large, multi-figured canvas belongs to Kon¬stantin Makovsky s Boyar cycle of works, in which he resurrected the Rus of the 17th-century boyars, mainly turning his attention to the ritual side of life at the time. The subject of the canvas was inspired by Alexei Tolstoy s novel Prince Serebryany. The artist was attracted to the scene of the jealousy of the old boyar, who is vigilantly following the hospitality ritual of the young guest, watching to see if his young, beautiful wife will somehow reveal to whom she not long ago said by the fence at night, I love you more than life, more than the red sun. The subject served as a way for the artist to demonstrate his virtuosity in conveying the textures and colours of the objects of wealth and the beauty of old Russian everyday life.

The canvas was first exhibited at the All-Russian Exhibition in Nizhny Novgorod in 1896, and then in 1897 in St Petersburg at the artist s personal exhibition, after which it became a part of the Russian Museum s collection.

41 Prince Serebrenni was the first example in the Russian literature of a historical novel written in the West European tradition. Much in the vein of Sir Walter Scott and Alexander Dumas' classics, a fictitious character here acts among real historical figures in a thoroughly researched and artfully recreated historical context. The major source for Tolstoy was History of the Russian State by Nikolay Karamzin. It was important for the author to reconstruct Old Russia's real life with its people's language, way of life, customs and habits.

69 A Boyar Wedding Feast[nb 1] was painted in 1883 by Russian artist Konstantin Makovsky (1839–1915).[nb 2] The painting shows a toast at a wedding feast following a boyar marriage, where the bride and the groom are expected to kiss each other. The bride looks sad and reluctant, while the elderly attendant standing behind her encourages the bride to kiss the groom. The work won a gold medal at the World's Fair held in Antwerp, Belgium in 1885,[2] and is considered to be one of Makovsky's most popular works.[6][8] It is currently located in Hillwood museum, Washington DC, US.[9]

82 This is a wonderful painting: rich colors, incredibly fine detail, every figure is an individual in face and pose, a dramatic scene (at least for his Russian audience), and the way he uses natural light. I'm surprised he wasn't called the Russian Rembrandt. There is also a macabre element with the head in a basket and the whatever it is behind the seated figure.

40 states are sane. 10 states require a fishing license on completely self contained farm ponds that are built, filled and stocked privately.

I understand game animals, since they don’t respect fences and wander. But privately bought fish, stocked in a privately built pond?

155 Point:
Prior to this week I had never heard the term “chèap fakes.” I would not be surprised if this term was created soley for the purpose of a talking point to defend Biden. Couldn’t use “deep fake” because that is a well defined term and could easily be checked. So they created a term that sounds very similar ( to keep the negative connotations) and started accusing those showing the videos of this poorly defined term of being guilty of “cheap fakes.”

Counterpoint: I’d heard of the phrase “chèap fakes,” but usually in regard to breast enhancement.

177 Whitmer was asked why President Joe Biden has so far struggled to earn widespread credit for the $1.2 trillion bipartisan infrastructure law among voters.

Her response? Voters have been worn out by the pandemic and many just haven't been tuned in to what's happening in Washington.

"I think the pandemic's taken a toll. People are stressed out," Whitmer told the Times. "They're just trying to pay the grocery bill, get the kids off to school, show up at their job, and maybe get a little bit of sleep at night. They're not consuming everything."

Every time I rant at detours and closed residential streets I tell myself “This means jobs. And money coming in from workers frequenting businesses along the way. And all up the supply chain there are benefits.”

Sherrod Brown and said the way to sell the Infrastructure Act was to inconvenience people. Have them drive through a construction zone and see the improvements being made.

It's because the media isn't letting people know. Whitmer should have asked the NYT why they don't report on the success of the infrastructure bill.

191 Kissing Ceremony

The moral regulations for Russian households (Domostroi) were written by a Novgorod monk called Sylvester [is this a Seinfeld bit?] in the sixteenth century. These rules condemned Russian women to a life spent in solitude. Before the reforms of Peter the Great, prominent citizens did not show their wives or daughters to strangers. Close relations were required for the head of the household to open the door to the female terem*.

In honour of this occasion, the kissing ceremony was performed. The mistress of the house would appear in festive attire, holding a goblet of wine. After taking a sip of the wine, she bowed and offered it to the guest. The man of the house would also bow and invite the guest to kiss his wife. The ceremony ended with the presentation of expensive shawls. [Definitely a Seinfeld bit].

Stolen from the intertubes. Those Russians.

Word power. Terem: the separate living quarters occupied by elite women of the Grand Duchy of Moscow and Tsardom of Russia. The unelite women were hitched to a plow.

274 Democrats nibble around the edges. I think Cuomo or somebody - maybe Bloomberg wanted to ban large sodas. And salt. Etc.

"Let's Move". They did pay lip service to the obesity and diabetes epidemic for a while. Even making logical inferences as to what a large cohort of very unhealthy people have on a socialized medical system.

But there are far too many competing tribes to make any sense out of it, or provide remedies that would actually work.

In the military, falling out for PT every morning is part and parcel of "free health care". They weigh your ass every six months. A nation of metabolic fatbergs on the government dole splurging on "underfilled" Potato Chip bags is par for the course these days.

Sometimes you'll hear that "junk food", the reason everyone is so fat or obese is due to "Cheap carbs" and such. This is not true. Junk foods, snacks, frozen foods, pizzas, are among the most expensive products you can buy. I honestly don't know how some of the fatties can afford to feed themselves. On the government "food stamps" apparently.

Food price inflation has been a problem for a long time. 60 years of subsidized diabetics by the millions has to have a price impact

A lot of the issues Boeing is facing aren't coming from poor engineering, they're coming from poor execution of skilled/semi-skilled labor. 312 Mountain House freeze-dried food ran into that early on.
For decades they packaged them in a kind of compressed form, to save on bulk. This, like weight, is important when carrying all your food.

From a marketing perspective, smaller packages don't look good on the rack. Enter the big poofy package that takes up too much room, and expands with increasing elevation - just exactly what the hiker doesn't need.

They recognized the problem, sort of, by the introduction of the "Pro" series of freeze-dried foods - that aren't deceptively packaged the way all our other retail foods are these days.

Eating too much causes weight gain. There are really caloric dense foods that are cheap and here is where people eat badly. It’s much cheaper to buy boxes of Mac and cheese than apples. A box of great value Mac and cheese is .58 at Walmart. An apple is $1.17. A package of Bar S hotdogs on $1.58. Frozen flounder is $5.38/ pound. Chicken breast is $4.34/pound. You can eat a meal of Mac and cheese with hotdogs for a little over $2 and consume a lot of calories in the process. Add zero to no exercise and here we are.

352 My point was just to illustrate that the government subsidizing food purchases has a large effect on the price we paid for groceries for a long time. Billions of dollars means we paid a lot more for food that we ought have, and not to be outdone, Congress authorized a 25 per cent increase in "food stamp benefits" not long ago.

There's a reason a small bag of field corn and salt chips costs six bucks, and government borrowing and spending is definitely part of it. The congress critter going after poofy bags of chips is pretty gay though. He should look into all those missing pillow and mattress tags. Harbach claimed Trump has a history of inciting threats against those involved in the prosecutions against him. "We are not operating off a blank slate or
a vacuum."

He pointed to gag orders in DC and NY as evidence.

Harbach also alleged that Trump has a "call and response phenomenon" with his supporters.

Meaning Trump posts things on Truth Social and allegedly his "supporters" act accordingly. Keep in mind, DOJ has 2 examples of this--a J6er who "attacked" the Cincinnati FBI field office a few days after MAL raid in August 2022 and some whacko who recently made threatening calls to an FBI agent in Hunter Biden case.

Harbach said Trump possesses a "peculiarly potent tool" in his Truth Social posts.

He is "aware" of his potency and he "brags" about it.

Ehhh... aptitude is a huge part as well. As far back as a decade and a half ago I was lamenting here how it's damn near impossible to find a tire shop that actually has anyone that knows how to properly mount a tire anymore. Sure, this is sort of downstream from an attitude where nobody gives a fuck top to bottom but it doesn't change the fact that they simply lack the knowledge.

I made a similar observation a few months ago. Everything is getting worse in goods and services. Fewer and fewer people give a tuppenny fuck about doing the job right or not making a shit product. In some cases making a shit product is the business model so you have to keep paying for updates and repairs and shit which are only available from the original manufacturer of course.

Ironically I work remotely now, and am one of the holdouts on "actually doing a good job" in my field. I don't think COVID drove the quitting in office jobs at least, I think it's more about DEI bullshit.
