Cautiously delving into the non-aviation world of things, I risk scorn from the HORDE by straying out of my lane. But I think it’s important for the HORDE to know that I am at least somewhat multi-dimensional.

Somewhat. For example, I always enjoy the Power Line blog “The Week In Pictures” memefest that Steven Hayward publishes on Saturdays. Thus, the banner picture above.

It is an axiom that the left can’t meme, but we learned this week that the left can’t grill, either. Hard to believe they really take Pride in these phony spectacles, but they are the same kind of people who think Star Wars is in desperate need of autologous space witches. Meanwhile, the climate cult hit Stonehenge this week. Ian Faith hardest hit. (IYKYK*.)

(*If You Know You Know> I had to look it up.)
At least a staffer put grilled hot dogs in the picture, although there doesn't seem to be any real fire going, except maybe in Chuckles' head. The other thing about this picture is that Chuckie (aka "The Lizard") is far too arrogant and egotistical to be embarrassed by this cheap fake.

I will say this meme triggered my infertile brain:

goldfish.jpg

We should be so lucky. I've always thought our nation's diet under demokkkrat/Progressive/Communist Party rule, assisted by their able-bodied RINO co-conspirators would be more like Certified,

Also, this one is kind of fun:

nukewhiskey.jpg

Having finally watched "OPPENHEIMER" (in a couple of shifts), I had to explore the interwebs to see if there was any correlation. There was! Creative marketing, "when we were a proper country":

Twenty-First Century Bourbon Whiskey, c. 1963

"In reality, it is an empty plastic container with a battery powered motor inside that causes the bottle to shake violently when it is picked up."

If you are a word junkie and you haven’t explored Substack yet, you are missing a cornucopia of words. There’s even an app for it. (Of course there is.)
I can't remember how I subscribed to Noah Smith, but he is one of those prolific Substack writers. He's pretty good at verbal illustration, although I question some of his premises. He publishes At least five interesting things for your weekend, this being number 41 apparently.

The five things in this post are: Soviet America (or not); the energy revolution; Trump's tax cuts; the Build-Nothing Country; macro data mysteries.

The first item hooked me as Noah rebuts Niall Ferguson's "We're all Soviets Now".
.
I'm not sure where Noah is on the political scale, but I infer that he leans slightly left of center. And he's optimistic, which is refreshing. For example, he tries to make this point:

"Ferguson is quick to label Trump’s indictment in New York as “Soviet justice”. Again, he doesn’t compare to other countries. In fact, indictment of former leaders is pretty common in democracies."

I admit that I have not researched all 78 cases of leaders being tried for crimes, but I'm guessing at least some of them committed an actual crime of some sort. Noah doesn't seem to understand that Trump's trials are political hit jobs manufactured to facilitate election interference. The NY DA "Twinkies" Bragg creating 34 felonies out of one expired misdemeanor seems pretty high on the Soviet justice scale IMHO. Lavrenty Beria smiles from below.

Also, Noah doesn't seem to remember anything about this:

"These newly released internal files by AFL show the Biden regime classifies someone as a person likely to commit “domestic violent extremist” attacks. But instead of focusing on actual threats like Antifa and pro-Hamas supporters, they have declared Trump supporters as enemies of the state instead."

This scheme was disbanded shortly after it was discovered, but the fact that Biden's admin even tried to do something like this appears pretty Soviet to me.

Oh, heck. Maybe multi-dimensional is a little optimistic. How about at least bi-dimensional? I’ll close it out with a musical interlude. But I bet most of the HORDE will not share my taste in music though. But give a listen anyway. You might like it and become a little more multi-dimensional. Keep the blue side up!

Well, that's what she said, alright.

It is indeed amazing, from the golden age of Australian film-making. If it came out today, would modern audiences be willing to accept the ambiguities and subtleties in the narrative?

Joan Lindsay, the author of the novel that inspired the movie actually had a chapter that explained what happened, but she decided to excise it from the book. That chapter, plus discussion and alternative takes on the mystery, was published as a sort-of sequel. I have to say that I honestly feel that the author was right in excluding the explanation in the original.

But the races.are a small part of the show. Typically the Blue Angels show up. In fact there are a number of aerial events and aerobatics. All very cool. But on my last visit there they had a P-51 and a Spitfire flying. It was awesome!!!

Technically, bourbon doesn't have to be distilled in Kentucky to meet the legal definition (though the vast majority of it is). There's no required length of aging, either.

It does, however, have to be aged in charred oak barrels, and I have my doubts whether that happened here.

If PDJT had come up with it, he would have made something of a deal about it. He would have done it humorously and at multiple rally speeches and Tweets, and it would be memorable.

Meme-able, even. KJP just awkwardly started saying it out of nowhere and all she ended up doing was sounding like she was out of touch and did it accidentally, in place of " deep fake".

Sure a few people in the media aped her and started saying it, like it was a Thing, but within a day it was only a meme on our side because of how horribly ineptly they rolled it out, because of how hard it backfired on them, and because we can meme.

186 Jamal Bowman's loss is likely to have some interesting repercussions. The Dem Party worships power, nothing else. They aren't for Israel; they aren't against Israel; same goes for everything else. They only worship power, and now Jamaal's loss has shown them that openly opposing Israel is a threat to their power.

211 In 2000, the year we moved to NC, the Democrat running for Senate (Cal Cunningham) did a similar ad to Schumer's. While he did know enough to have the grill on, he was cooking the same menu. But he made the gross error of calling it "an old fashioned Carolina barbecue." IMO, that probably cost him the election. In NY, anything cooked on the grill counts as "barbeque." But try that in Virginia or N Carolina. Nope.

Actually, I'm not sure we wouldn't have been better off losing, as the winner was that supreme POS Tillis. I voted for him; I will never do so again.

Yes, especially when he's filming in Australia. To his credit, though, he did do "Master and Commander" and "Gallipoli," both of which are awesome, and "The Year of Living Dangerously," which was arguably one of Mel Gibson's best roles.

"Picnic At Hanging Rock" is worth viewing, once one accepts Weir is gonna Weir. The entire film is like an Impressionist painting brought to life, and it's definitely a case where the movie was better than the original book.

220 What do Democrats really need, though?

They're not a cause, or a business anymore. They're at the stage when the movement is a racket.

They don't need votes. They manufacture them. Same as they do "public opinion." And they don't need money - they have a codlock on every boardroom and friendly foreign donor, not to mention the federal reserve and the machineries of fiscal policy.

They need boots on the streets and commissars and snitches and all-around reliable NPCs - fanatics who'll keep the pressure on the normies.

Not professors and artists and attorneys and CPAs and lobbyists and so forth. They're nice to have, but not necessary at this juncture.

If it comes down to Jews vs. CHUDs, they have to choose Team CHUD.

Indeed! There were so many nautical details that they did justice to, including the way gunners had to deal with the relative rolling and pitching of their ship and the target. I also liked the bit where they depict quite accurately what meals were like in the officer's mess, right down to the various insects that infested their hardtack. I also thought the casting was great - Russell Crowe made for an excellent Jack Aubrey, and Paul Bettany was surprisingly good as Dr. Maturin.

I always allow for a certain leeway in Hollywood productions, but I do zero in when they're depicting vessels from the age of sail - if there's a film involving Columbus or any other of the late 15th/early 16th century explorers, there had better be caravels and carracks, and someone has to show the significant distinctions between a galleon and a galley.

I think we'd have a meatless meal around once a week or so. But see my 228. I like bacon in a grilled cheese sammich.

If there is ground water circulating in the rock formations that host the mine, then it will circulate whether the mines is there or not. Uranium is very mobile element, and some of the richest uranium deposits occur where it was precipitated out of ground water by a reducing environment. This is all just scare-mongering by the usual gang of Commies.

That is one possibility. It might only take a day or two if temperatures are warm enough to get some surface transfer of decomp scent. He wasn't around for weeks, he left the area within a couple of days, but might have moved the body off site, inn which case finding it will boil down to serendipity.

268 John Drake,
Did you see the Starz (now available on Netflix) series "Black Sails" about pirates in about 1720?
There are lots of sailing ship scenes, but I am ignorant about the subject, so I don't know about the accuracy.
Posted by: Idaho Spudboy

I was only able to catch seasons three and four, but from what I could tell, they were reasonably accurate about matters maritime in the Golden Age of Piracy. Their achilles heel was their desire to depict a lot of the pirate vessels as far larger and more formidable than was actually the case. Blackbeard, for example, never captained any vessel larger than a sloop, and it was extremely rare for them to have any vessel that could go one-on-one against a Man of War.

The production hinged on R.L. Stevenson's "Treaure Island," and their need to fit that in with the various episodes and storylines created a number of difficulties. I guess what I'm saying is that, apart from Hollywood's tendency towards over-the-top depictions, the ship-handling and details were pretty much on point, but the underlying subtext of the reality of 18th century piracy was mangled a bit.

288 In aviation news

The Oregon ANG was the first recipient of the new F-15EX which is a new build two seat Eagle with AESA radar, more powerful GE engines, and 60% part commonality with the F-15E Strike Eagle.

It is nice the USAF is finally replacing the F-15C/D airframes since back in 2010 it was estimated these planes would need to be replaced between 2025 and 2030.

Oregon is slated to acquire the first 12. Kadena will receive the next 24. Followed by New Orleans and Fresno. Which is nice since Oregon has ferried to Davis-Monthan all of its F-15Ds and Kadena is already retiring some of its Eagles.

But without Strike Eagle conformal fuel tanks with hardpoints, the F-15EX is going to be a super air superiority fighter only. The tanks are still in the procurement stage. Along with what to do with the second seat; one idea is to configure it for a second pilot to perform the CCA mission where the F-15EX would control supporting drones.

But this is all pie in the sky stuff right now. Along with the rest of the production run. Be interesting to see if the C/D Eagles will be fully replaced before 2030.

311 Well the reason for the F-15C/D Eagles still being in service can probably be traced back to the cancellation of more F-22s and delays in that expensive jobs program called the F-35.

The other Oregon ANG flying unit is going to get F-35s.

The C/D Eagles have been flying on borrowed time since they are 40 years old and well a few years back one broke up in flight due to fatigue in the longerons.

So prior decisions now lead to the USAF trying to co-op a Boeing private venture into plugging a short fall.

If we can buy a Girsan 1911, which is actually a quality gun, for +/- $500... we oughta be able to get some new Warthogs for about their original 1970s/80s price points, even now?

333 Giant cardboard box fun. I went on a cardboard adventure when kids were young. Big refrigerator boxes are the best toys and wanted the Littles away from technology. Among the variety of things we (kids and i) built was a cardboard F22. It was about 4 feet long and properly scaled. Maiden flight - threw it from a hillside like a paper airplane, it glided about 50 yards. Evey kid in the neighborhood showed up with cardboard and an eager smile for a week or so.

334 Look back at the history of our weapons procurement. We rejected what would become state of art so many times or we accepted a bunch of duds. One example is an American invented the slope armor and tank suspension system and because there was personal conflict with the brass he had to market it to the Russians. Same with the machine gun. Lucky we had John Browning though his potato digger was not his finest design.

Yes. And more of them please. As Dizzy Dean said, "Why would I try to outsmart anyone when I can outdummy them." Low tech, violent, Warthogs have a place in a variety of scenarios.

340 M-14 vs. FAL.

Where they both fail. The FN was closer to being "modular" than the M-14, but falls short. The M-14 was great, but should have been in the .276 as Garand intended for the M-1 itself. 7.62x51 was just too much whoomp for either rifle or shoulder fired full auto. And that, was that.

Stoner did not have the most genius bolt carrier group. Or magazine. Or buttstock. Or lower receiver, or barrel. Or gas tube. Or, etc.

Except that, all those bits could be replaced, mixed, matched, mis-matched, and also accept bits that had not yet even been imagined at the time, much less invented.

THAT is the GENIUS of the Stoner / AR platform and system. ALL of the other designs hit a developmental WALL, far sooner that Eugene Stoner's "Mattel" rifle.

This grieves me, being a devoted fan of oiled walnut and treated steels.

But the AR platform will live far into the future, even now.

Agree with your sentiment. I view the AR as a tool - a superior wrench in the toolbox. The walnut and levers as art.

Well, it was manufactured. Sort of. But never "issued".

Ruger called it the Mini-14. But it had some design and accuracy compromises which held it back from an overwhelming success.

366 I so seldom listen to music anymore. Radio is *all* crap and commercials, even the "classic rock" stations are just the same thirty or forty songs on a loop. No album music unless you pay extra for a subscription. Meh.

A good morning to you, JQ. Yes, we have the classic top 40 FM station that carries the same call letters of the AM Top 40 we all grew up with here, and plays stuff from 1955 up into the early '80s. We had another, '80s only, that broadcasts on Internet but won't play in my car now -- maybe they've changed frequency? And a third that focuses on late '70s-early '80s. I can get surprised by their choices. ("Him," by Rupert Holmes, for instance.) But I mostly listen to the FM that used to have Rush and has Hannity, and to a flash drive of my own favorites.

Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius, Dreaming of Elsewhere at June 26, 2024 03:53 AM (omVj0)

370 Concert-level volume, is probably the only level at which I could "hear" music properly these days. To drown out the tinnitus. LOL

Or-- headphones, so's to not upset the neighbors!

Posted by: JQ at June 26, 2024 03:58 AM (njWTi)

371 The Eighties station I mentioned above still is at 104.5, but they've had a troubled history and different call letters since they first came along in 2001. Hurricanes have knocked them out more than once, and maybe their transmitter is gone. I can listen to their play of Casey Kasem on Saturday mornings on the 'Net, but no signal in my car. Oh, well.

I'm pretty sure I can adjust the speakers in my car to shift the balance so that the sound is a bit louder on my side. Have to play with the settings.
