I have questions

Evolution of the truck

Truck.jpg

I never really understood this trend. I have a truck to haul stuff around. If I wanted a vehicle that's primarily for hauling 5 people in comfort but still large, I'd get an SUV.

Headline of the week

This kid shreds

I remember in the 80s when Mike McGill invented the 720 McTwist and everyone was just blown away. Now here's this little man ripping off 3 900s in a row. Unreal.

148 We had the "cotter pin" discussion here a few weeks ago. You know the tapered wedge bolts that were used for a hundred years or so to fasten bicycle pedal cranks to their axle? Those are, strictly speaking, cotter pins, or just cotters. That was the terminology used by the Brit engineers who devised that stuff.

What you and I call a "cotter pin", the Brits call a "split pin", and indeed, they are split.

I was doing a kingpin job on a small truck axle last week, and the king pins are retained in the axle forging by...cotters. Round pins with a tapered wedge on one side, that engages a flat on the king pin, and prevents it from turning or sliding up or down. The original cotters were just hammered in and peened over, but they were messed up pretty good, and I used cotters out of connecting rods, which were exactly the right size, and sported a threaded end, so they could be drawn up tight by a nut.

And also the Moon is near major lunistice (this is a drawn out thing, over several months). There are two, major and minor. This is a major one.

The end result is the full Moon is near the lowest point over the horizon in the sky, and moonrise and set are occurring near their limits as well. The Moon will rise and set pretty far south of east and west tonight.

183 A review by 51 AoS Morons and 'Ettes has determined that the pictured Trailer Hitch Arrangement, bears all the hallmarks of having been assembled by one or more members of the Democrat Underground.

1. The Safety Chain being connected to the hitch-crosspin. 2. The Safety Chain being terminated by a spring-gate carbinier vs. a proper "S" hook or threaded, openable chain-link. 3. The lack of any Cotter, Lock or Safety Key in the hitch-ball lock, atop the trailer portion of the rig. 4. The sloppy, wholly inadequate wiring, indescribably bad, from end to end.

Possibly a "5". Was there EVEN a second safety chain? There needs to be two of them, one secured to the safety chain holes or links, welded to either side of the receiver hitch receiver itself.

Tell me they lifted this picture from Hunter Biden's Laptop. Lie to me if you have to!

Moonrise here was at 135 degrees, 45 degrees south of east, exactly SE. Moonset will be at 235 degrees, 10 degrees north of SW.

See here for an illustration of the major and minor lunar standstill effect. Due to "nodal precession" of the lunar orbit, the lunar orbital inclination adds and subtracts to the earth's axial tilt:

One thing I did enjoy when I visited Joisey way back when was this one DJ on WNEW-FM had a 'something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue' day each week. Now that was fun. 298 "I never really understood this trend. I have a truck to haul stuff around. If I wanted a vehicle that's primarily for hauling 5 people in comfort but still large, I'd get an SUV."

This isn't really rocket science. Quad cab truck gives up a little bit of payload and some bed space but can still tow much, much more than an equivalent class SUV. Also still has more payload and cargo room than an equivalent class SUV. Not just door sticker figures either, I mean the suspension can actually handle the load better as well. AND is usually going to be much cheaper... AND it's much easier to throw stuff in the bed of a truck in a waterproof box than it is to haul muddy shit in the trunk/cabin of an SUV.

Things were different 30-40 years ago when you could just cruise down to town with extra passengers in the bed. Try that now - you WILL get pulled over and ticketed. A vehicle that can only fit 2 or 3 adults in the cab is kinda useless for people that aren't cranky single old men. They call 2 door/8ft bed trucks "old man trucks" for a reason.

303 I would have no problem with a Crew Cab 8ft. bed, F-250/F-350.

IOW, the Standard Truck Format of most all actual Texas Ranchers. (see Rancher Bob & the Cowhorse Queen's rigs, for examples)

Sure, you need a C-130's aircraft apron for maneuvering space, but drive one long enough, and it'll become routine, if not easy.

Early '00s, the Ford would turn a *much* tighter circle than the GM products, and near identical with the Dodge. Nowdays, they all can damn near turn in double the truck length, which is remarkable.

Learn to back in to the tighter spaces, and you'll soon be driving one like a pro.

307 Until recently, I had not read any Harlan Ellison. Just finished two short story collections (The Beast Who Shouted Love at the Heart of the World, and Love Ain't Nothing But Sex Misspelled). Both had one really standout story (A Boy and His Dog, and The Resurgence of Miss Ankle Strap Wedgie). Otherwise, his writing was good in general quality. There was only one story I thought was tedious. But two things mar his writing. One is that he uses some slang that comes off as an attempt to be hip but that is so dated and dumb it detracts from the quality. The second is that a certain godless meanness permeates his writing. It's consistent and ugly. It's always hard to know how much of that kind of thing is affected, fictional, and how much is autobiographical. But it comes off as autobiographical with him. I'll likely read more Ellison in the future. But I would not want anyone like him near me.

359 I don’t get the map. TX requires a carry permit for some types of weapons? TX has permitless carry and they don’t care what the gun is. But they do recommend getting the concealed carry license as it can help with the background check.

363 Texas REQUIRES a Concealed Carry Permit for OPEN carry.

Why?

Cause with the greater exposure w/ Open Carry, the bearer thereof best be DOCUMENTED to be familiar with use of force, escalation of force, limitation of force and other such laws of the State of Texas.

So, hence, the law is formed to MAKE the Open Carrier have a damn clue as to what his or her legal obligations ARE, before stepping out, strapped.

In that context, I'm FOR the law as is in effect.

But there should be a 50 State exception for Open Carry at the Governor's BBQ. It's a Texas thing. If I had to explain, you wouldn't understand.

365 Until recently, I had not read any Harlan Ellison.

You might try The Essential Ellison: A 50-Year Retrospective for many of Harlan Ellison's better stories, including, aside from the two already mentioned, "Repent, Harlequin!" Said the Ticktockman, "I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream", The Prowler in the City at the Edge of the World, Along the Scenic Route, The Deathbird, The Song the Zombie Sang, The Whimper of Whipped Dogs, Strange Wine, Jeffty Is Five, Alive and Well and on a Friendless Voyage, Grail, and The Paladin of the Lost Hour.

Though it oddly failed to include Shatterday, which was adapted as the first episode of the '80s Twilight Zone revival, with Bruce Willis in the starring (really, the only) role.

369 I thought Texas went Constitutional carry , so why the need for a chp at all? I do know half the states have gone for constitutional carry, which in my understanding would no longer requie a concealed handgun permit or any other permits or rules for open carry.

I know Texas was very late to the concealed handgun permit game and very, very late to open carry, which made it new and strange there, which is odd when you really think about it. Virginia has always allowed open carry to the point that as long as Virginia has been a state, and that is a long time , open carry was always legal.

Virginia was also early with shall issue concealed handgun permits. Florida was first, but Virginia came soon after, and led the way politically in the 1990s. The problem with Virginia is it has been invaded by leftist Yankees and many others, 2A rights in Virginia have receded over the last 20 years though open carry is still legal statewide and you don’t have to prove your to any agency you have that right.

373 Quint.

Texas still has a Concealed Weapons Permit system for two reasons.

1. that you can certify that you're a documented Good Guy.

2. Interstate Reciprocity.

Number two, summation. If you have a TX permit, a Florida Permit and a Utah Permit, you're pretty much as legal as it gets in all CHL states.

Pro Tip. KNOW the LAWS in those other states in which you might wanna carry. THEIR laws govern, regardless of where YOUR permit might derive.

374 373, for sure, know the laws, and I totally understand reciprocity. And I do think people should take classes because there’s a lot of legal stuff and you get a lot of trouble and everyone should be safe. Carrying a firearm is not a thing to take lightly. It is a serious thing.

But unless I jumped into the conversation, missing some context I just checked up on it, and Texas does have constitutional carry now. So in my understanding, you’re not required to have a permit to carry in Texas open or concealed.

I do know there are states that issued permits for reciprocity reasons, even though they don’t require permit in that state to carry.

Posted by: Quint at June 22, 2024 03:44 AM (uIJ3y)

375 Quint, II

Outside of the "CWP" system, Texas does have Constitutional Carry. To a certain degree.

NO PERMIT NEEDED to carry concealed.

Want to OPEN CARRY? GET that CWP as outlined above and pass the tests on all the use of force parameters.

THEN, you can Open Carry.

I think this reduces Bubba-isms, to a very large degree.

376 373 I hear ya. My only issue is they keep making me give them $50 every five years to prove I’m a good guy lol but I do hear what you’re saying and I’ve no argument with it whatsoever. But my understanding is in Texas you can carry without a permit. That’s all I’m saying.. I know in Virginia you can.

Posted by: Quint at June 22, 2024 03:46 AM (uIJ3y)

377 375, I hear what you’re saying and I know open Carrie versus concealed carry with a permit has always been an argument in the 2A Community. I know there are some people that use open carry to show off and that is a really dumb thing to do., In Virginia, there have been major arguments about two a supporters about open carry and other issues.

I personally pretty much never see people open caring but I know that’s anecdotal. I do know in Virginia open has always been legal and that’s going back over 100 or 200 years. I think it’s a bit weird that if Texas went to Constitutional carry for concealed carry that they would ban open carry unless you had a permit. That to be honest sounds odd to me and I’m not sure if that is actually the rules. I was just trying to clarify it because it just seemed a bit odd that’s all. I know these laws change and Texas is ahead of Virginia and many ways on a right no question there.
