Everybody Is Sick Of You

Just Stop Oil’s Stonehenge stunt is the last straw

These stunts are not common-garden civil disobedience. This is not disruption in an attempt to ‘raise awareness’ or get some politician’s attention. These are attacks on human civilisation itself – on some of humanity’s most significant artistic, architectural and political achievements. And there is a very good reason why the cult of Just Stop Oil thinks nothing of vandalising them.

After all, these eco-irritants are not merely ‘concerned’ about climate change – they are gripped with apocalyptic terror by climate change. The group’s mastermind, Roger Hallam, likes to tell his acolytes that in the coming decades, climate change is going to kill as many as six billion people – the vast majority of human beings, in other words. In the eyes of this millenarian eco-cult, climate change is not a problem to be managed or overcome, but a near inevitable catastrophe that will bring destruction on the scale of a global nuclear Holocaust. (There is, needless to say, absolutely zero scientific evidence that climate change could possibly lead to such an outcome.)

These stupid leftist attacks will stop when the “protesters” start getting punched in the face.

Defacing The Classics

‘The Lord Of The Rings: The War Of The Rohirrim’ To Introduce Long-Lost Tribe Of Female Warriors Led By Helm Hammerhand’s Daughter

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, writer Philippa Boyens confirmed that the unnamed daughter of Helm would be the main protagonist of the film. She said, “When they suggested anime, that’s when my brain really started whirring. Immediately, the idea of telling this story came to me. They had a number of different ones they were going to pitch me, but I was quite bossy, and I was like, ‘No, I know exactly what this needs.’”

She continued, “I immediately felt that it would work for anime because it’s so character-based and also contained within its own world. It speaks to certain things that work really well with Japanese storytelling.”

Does she know the kind of things that happen to female characters in Japanese anime?

Legalize It

California Legalized Drugs. Cartels Took It Over.

Drug legalization has failed on every level. The legal drug business is collapsing. MedMen, which once promised to be the Apple of weed, fell from a $3 billion valuation to a bankruptcy with $411 million in liabilities. Despite the green crosses and online apps, 80% of Californian’s pot is still the old-fashioned illegal kind. Politicians may be boasting about hundreds of millions in revenue, but the cartels are making tens of billions and they’re taking over entire forests.

The future isn’t pot shops, weed apps or MedMen: it’s Mexican and Chinese organized crime compounds that are spreading across the West and parts of New England like a plague.

Legalization advocates still argue that if the government lowered the high taxes on legal pot, the business model could turn around again, but even without a single penny in taxes, no amount of legal labor is going to be able to compete with illegal aliens smuggled across the border and forced to work for free by gunmen. Legal businesses can’t compete with organized crime.

Drug legalization increased homelessness and drug abuse. It boosted illegal migration and organized crime. It made life worse in every state and city where it’s been tried without delivering tangible benefits to anyone (including weed users who still get theirs the old-fashioned way) except for a few politicians who temporarily have a few million more to pass around to special interests, donors and lobbyists.

And all they had to do was hand over half the country to organized crime.

“Unexpectedly”, no doubt.

A Long Slide Down A Slippery Slope

Hypocrisy exposed: Jillian Michaels’ rant on 'crazy California'

The reality is that the state of California took the decadent and revisionist premise that Jillian Michaels lives her own life by and followed it to its natural, damnable conclusion. Yes, folks, the woke mob is more consistent than she is! Did she think she could only slide halfway down the slope to Gomorrah and just get comfortable in her own private Idaho?

Of course, that can never work, no matter how well-intentioned her partial awakening is now. She moved out of California. So what? The real question is how much of California did she take with her and won’t let go of?

The only thing that beats bad religion is the right one. The idols must be smashed.

I remember when Kurt Schlicter's Kelly Turnbull novels first came out. Some of the stuff that he intended to seem outrageous has already happened.

On COIN

What America Can Learn From Israel on the Battlefield

After Oct 7, Israel is applying a crude realpolitik to the problem. It's insufficient as a solution, but it's a whole lot more pragmatic than the nation building and counterinsurgency rabbit hole that swallowed up a generation of our finest fighting men with nothing to show for it except despair.

Israel is trying to limit its casualties while maximizing its results. Our politicians and generals could learn a thing or two from that. The IDF is not being tasked with digging wells, winning hearts and minds or having three cups of tea with the terrorists. Its soldiers are tasked with pushing out and engaging enemy forces to expose their leaders and command structure.

In Afghanistan and Iraq, we used military force to achieve political and diplomatic aims, while Israel is using military force to achieve military aims. What a shockingly sensible notion.

Perhaps our politicians and generals ought to consider it next time we get involved in a war.

You don't win a war until you destroy the enemy's (both civilian and military) will to resist. The fact that we've forgotten this simple fact explains every conflict since WWII.

Just Tinkering Around

Armor

Bizarre armor from Mycenaean Greece turns out to have been effective

The Dendra armor, one of the oldest suits of bronze armor ever found, had been considered a purely ceremonial piece. It seemed impossible to use in battle due to its cumbersome design.

It took over a decade of research, elaborate numerical models, and 13 Greek marines fighting in it from dawn till dusk to prove it was surprisingly good at its job, despite its odd appearance. “This made the Mycenaean warriors some of the best equipped in the Eastern Mediterranean in the Late Bronze Age,” says professor Andreas Flouris, a researcher at the University of Thessaly, who led the study.

I need to pick up a set.

71 Moon Stuff
-----
Look up! The Strawberry Moon on June 21 is the lowest full Moon in many years. What does this mean? Expect a beautiful full Moon that appears larger and more colorful than usual. Will it be strawberry red?
-----
What does that mean?

It means the moon will rise but appear to be lower in the sky than usual.

Since we’re in daylight time, the middle of the night is now 1 AM, so check out the full moon when it’s at its loftiest position of the night. It’s barely up at all! From places like Fairbanks and Rekyavik, this Full Moon won’t even clear their horizon. It won’t rise at all. For them, June will simply have no full Moon.

So we’ve got a paradox coming. The Full Moon usually is our brightest night. But this month, it ascends so little that the thick horizon air will give it an orange-red hue and subdue its light. Moreover, its extreme southerly position will keep it aloft for a few short hours, leaving that night mostly black. Don’t miss this extra-low, extra-big, colorful full Moon for a few precious hours.

Labour's already denounced them, they've been accused by POC academics of "colonialism" (because reasons), and if it turns out they've destroyed the lichens on the stones, they'll look like hypocrites to boot.

75 Meanwhile, in Ukraine:
1. For the first time, the Russians used the FAB3000, a 3 ton guided glide bomb, in combat. It made quite an impressive explosion.
2. NATO is reportedly pouring armor, ammo, and medical personnel into Ukraine for another Great Counter Offensive in July. The last one in June 2023 turned into an epic disaster for the Ukrainians, with huge losses for minimal gains.
3. Putin made a visit to North Korea, and probably bought more artillery shells than the US and NATO will be able to produce in the next five years.

77 Perhaps our politicians and generals ought to consider it next time we get involved in a war.

Who is going to fight a vanity war for the USG? America has nothing left to defend, we are all Baddies now.

America is a failed state. Depleted treasury, lawlessness, rigged elections, corrupt courts, no borders, low-trust society, atheistic nihilistic hedonism as our Elite's mentality, high unemployment and wide-spread mental illness and drug addiction.

Our military is only good at losing, blowing up allied infrastructure, toppling weak governments and making an American tourist universally hated.

No, WeirdDave, not punched in the face. They'll stop when people start treating them like the illegal alien rapist of the 13yo. Punching, kicking, scratching, grabbing a nearby hickory stick and cracking their skull, then tying them somewhere in the open for the police to find.

84 So we’ve got a paradox coming. The Full Moon usually is our brightest night. But this month, it ascends so little that the thick horizon air will give it an orange-red hue and subdue its light. Moreover, its extreme southerly position will keep it aloft for a few short hours, leaving that night mostly black. Don’t miss this extra-low, extra-big, colorful full Moon for a few precious hours.

the boar-tooth helmet is light, resistant to blows and well documented both in works like the odyssey and the archaeological record.
the Mycenaean were known for their armor, but everyone thought it was like early classical armor, with greaves and chestplates, not that barrel-like set up. Think what sort of resources it took to gather the bronze and cast and shape it in the 17th century BC. It wasn't just from raiding, they also were traders and shippers in the bronze trade out of the Hittite lands, and they took that trade away from the Minoans.

Time zone boundaries get political and thus crazy. See "time.gov" for the boundaries.

Now, Alaska has really fucked up time zone. It's Zulu - 9(8 DST), but it should be UTC-10.

The original idea was time zones were to be 15 degrees wide, which is one hour, and centered about the corresponding meridian. EST meridian is 75W, CST = 90W, MST = 105W, PST= 120W.

Boundaries were thus 30 minutes plus or minus, 7.5 degrees east or west. Local mean time would be no more than 30 minutes different from the standard time zone time.

232 >> Stepped outside to check out this fabled Strawberry moon.

Full Moon is tomorrow night, and being opposite the sun just a day after solstice, it will thus be very low on the horizon at transit. It's just 26.1 degrees altitude here. Very low Full Moon.

And while it's called the Strawberry Moon per the calendar month naming convention (which is simple, but not exactly right).

It's really the Buck Moon, first moon of astronomical summer. That usually occurs in July, well 2/3 of the time.

Summer here is a true Blue Moon season. We have four full moons this time. The 3rd, occurring in August is the real, seasonal Blue Moon. After that, it resets for two years, with the monthly moons being the same as the seasonal.

Boundaries were thus 30 minutes plus or minus, 7.5 degrees east or west. Local mean time would be no more than 30 minutes different from the standard time zone time.

Look at the time zone boundaries in Oregon and Idaho. Kansas has the sliver in the middle as well.

That is local politics, mostly. In those slivers, they're liked economically, "culturally" with the other zone and want to be the same or something.

That MST area in Oregon is less than one big county, IIRC. But other parts close by unofficially use MST as well.

Drop South a bit, and you're sailing in the Roaring Forties.

Where you can "circumnavigate" the planet, 360 degrees, without ever touching land.

IF you survive, that is. Those waters are the land of REGULAR 90 ft. waves and 100mph winds, even without a Cyclone to be seen.

The old Slave/Sugar/Rum "Triangle Route" of 300 years ago, was reliable, relatively safe, and reasonably swift. For sailing ship days, that is.

Beats rowing, anyway. Escpecially when the Captain wants to go water skiing.

Interesting fact. There was a smidge of an error in the original Prime Meridian running through the observatory. The "true" prime is about 100m to the east.

The error was due to the local vertical deflection, the deviation in "plumb" from passing exactly through the center of the Erf due to local gravitational anomalies.

When you sighted the sun (well a proxy, don't look directly at the sun :-) ), you were off by the slightest smidge.

300 Speaking of inefficient preindustrial manufacturing, I was recently looking into how rennet used to be made. Now it's all done by bacteria producing enzymes, that you activate with weak solutions of hcl, and it's way, way more concentrated than the old method.

Back in the day, you would harvest the fourth stomach of a suckling calf, and clean it out, and hang it to dry, and then chop it to bits, and then rehydrate them in a solution of saltwater and wine. The rennet you strained out was less than a hundredth as effective at curdling milk than the modern version.

303 I am surprised that it took so long for iron to be smelted. Iron ore of various kinds is almost ubiquitous. One would think it would have been discovered, fortuitously, by many cultures over the years.
Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at June 20, 2024 11:00 PM (masDJ)

Bronze can be smelted in a firepit and the ore can be reduced in a hole in the ground covered with turf, but iron requires higher temperatures and specific oxygen and carbon to make anything useful.
The Hittites were playing with iron, they had some meteorite iron and they had things like the prills you get when you fire iron rich clay, but they didn't quite get to Iron.
I am fascinated with the bog-iron process, but from all indications it is really hard. That Aussie in Primitive Technology channel is still trying to get a decent smelting, and the pros are having trouble enough getting an Archimedes furnace to run right

Astronomical time can now be measured to a precision of 10 microseconds. Transit circles can't achieve that, and very long baseline interferometry radio telescope sightings of distant quasars establish the "earth rotation angle" relative to a true fixed, inertial direction.

This direction is called the CIO, Celestial Intermediate Origin.

Now, it gets really complicated. The modern equivalent of the Prime Meridian is the TIO, Terrestrial Intermediate Origin. This is not an actually fixed meridian on the surface of the earth.....

The TIO: Imagine a reference geoid. This geoid is firmly fixed to the instantaneous rotational axis of the earth.

The problem is the actual surface of the earth, the crust, wig woggles relative to that axis. This is polar wander, or the Chandler wobble. To get microsecond precision, that must be accounted for.

The latitude and longitude, relative to the axis of any point on earth is constantly wig-woggling due to this wobble.

Actual measurements are made on that wobbling surface and must be corrected to the TIO.

UT0 is the raw measurement of astronomical time relative to the prime meridian. UT1 corrects that to the TIO, and thus cancels out the Chandler Wobble.

Another one, UT2, cancles out the seasonal nutation of the axis over the course of the years. This used to be the important one, until Atomic time and UTC hybrid of that took over.

UT1 is the current "natural" definition of astronomical time.

367 That belt fed shotty is a whole hell of a lot closer to WORKING, than "not working".

Yeah, there's stoppages.

Which is why GENIUS designers like John Moses Browning were GENUSES. They could "see" and intuit the geometries, feed angles, interferences and stoppage points, like none before them, and frankly, none since.

Making a square nose object like a shotgun shell feed into a belt fed, ain't gonna be easy. Plus, plastic hulls "gall" on sharp edges, where brass casings, don't.

Looks to me, like he's well on the way to sorting things out. Not there yet, but not terribly far, either.

I think the system shows promise. And once ironed-out, it'd really benefit from an M-249 style "drum" for the belt, too.

Posted by: Anna Puma at June 21, 2024 12:10 AM (Kc0bc)

She's a one-woman Tiffany Hall.

I've been occasionally following this story. It is absolutely wild what that crazy cunning stunt has done. What I find to be so crazy is that nobody can seem to stop her from raping that township blind. No one. The thing with the cop cars, her trips, that fake charity, the local business shakedowns, the police corruption, the salaries and, apparently, a drive by hit that didn't succeed. The absurdity is beyond any Monty Python sketch or Babylon Bee article. Now that the FIBs are involved, expect nothing until, as said above, Trump wins. But I just find it hard to believe that no one, no government dept or agency stepped in, the county DA, the guv, the state AG, nobody. With it all out in the open. If she got away with this open thievery for so long, and she kept doing it ever after being caught, even playing the 'church' card (a la Fani), one can only imagine how our permanent Congress/government (bureaucrats) are. No wonder they fear Trump. Should Trump win, I honestly believe he just might be the chairman of the unwoke leaders of the world.

Pattern, and Shot String Profile.

Pattern, being the static impact(s) as measured on a (IIRC) 40 in circle at 40 yards. The numbers and percentages of which, translate to "cylinder", "modified", "full" and several intermediate Choke Designations.

Shot string though, gets really esoteric. Your basic load of shot sits as a cylinder, Coke-Can like, in the shell. Fire it at a flying bird or clay disc, and if you've got the lead JUST RIGHT, the object will intercept the shot string, so that it's forward motion coincides with the majority of the shot, which has become a 2 ft. to 3 ft. long "string" of pellets, which describe a longitudinal path in the direction of the bird or clay disc's flight.

THIS is what causes a Clay Pigeon to "disappear" in a puff of dust. It got hit by a huge percentage of the pellets. A "chip"? Got hit by one maybe two pellets.

400 One might be able to design a plastic hull (has to open at the mouth to let the shot column emerge), with a tapered shoulder and rounded crimp at the nose.

It'll feed better. But now, how to design the wad, the shot cup, the powder buffer system?

Belt fed IS better than any "magazine" for shotty shells in an auto, though. No long term compression of the plastic hulls.

Dude is on the right track. I think, in time, he'll Get it RIGHT.

Well, your auto-firing shotgun is not going to be used for upland bird hunting. I expect Moose and Goose would frown on that. It's going to be a military market item. Use for area denial, or clearing away rioters. Ballistic properties of the shot load probably less of an issue than getting a huge storm of lead downrange.

Possibly a standard plastic hull with a discarding sabot to give it a round nose would do the trick?

405 Come to think of it, if the object of the exercise is to create a veritable shitstorm of lead pellets downrange, the obvious answer is a variant of the Vulcan cannon used in the A-10. Don't rely on the gas or the blowback from the shell to cycle the action, run it by an electric motor. That way, a dud shell doesn't shut you down.

Your 405 is right on the larger scale, but not a Man Portable solution.

Your discarding sabot WOULD work, but would need to be based on the Mini-Shell format, with the sabot extending out to the 2-3/4 or 3 in Mag, maximum OAL of a duty riot gun shell.

Make the Dude's deisgn to work and flow well with a mini-shell w/sabot. Spin an effective Brake onto that Short Barrel.

Room Clearing Drills would never be the same, again.

Home defense? Arrange the walls and furniture, design a Kill Funnel.

The Taliban and Al Queda are essentially merging into a terrorist organization with the goal of establishing a caliphate. If there is a large scale terrorist attack it will have been funded, at least in part, by us.

449 I'll ask again on the Tech thread, but does anybody know how, on the MacBook Air at least, to ensure that the top menu bar (and your tabs, in Brave) remain on the screen at the same time as the lower bar with all the apps (the "Dock")? I touched some key combo, and now I get one or the other when I move the cursor there, not both.

I've gone to System Preferences -> Menu Bar and Dock, and unchecked the boxes saying to "automatically hide and show" those two things, but no good. Any ideas?

451 Or state government (NYS) has stars in their eyes over how much money they will make with legal pot stores.
Someone failed to tell them that the free street market will undercut their inflated price. No taxes on the street, so Kathy H. can again realize that not everything comes up roses.

452 Turned the TV on tonight. Not on much in this house. In 2 hours I've seen 3 WNBA commercials. Caitlin Clark is prominent in all of them. What a bunch of horse shit. I would watch 16 straight hours of Barney and Tele Tubbies before I would watch 30 seconds of a WNBA game.

453 Got to decide if I want to go work out, or take it easy and have a little pre-breakfast (i.e., toast and peanut butter). Heat index is 90 F. -- but then it'll be like that or worse for months to come.

454 Heat index is 90 F. -

I had icicles in my garden last weekend. Saturday is predicted to be 90.

456 "Morning, deep insomaniacals! I'm up about forty min. before the alarm, for some reason, though I feel fairly well rested."

Been up since 1:00 CDT. My internal time clock is way out of whack. Doggie continues to be confused as to Mom getting up so early. Accepts treats with enthusiasm but goes back to sleep fairly quickly and starts gradually inching over in bed until mom has one leg in the bed and one leg on the floor. I think he's telling me that if I want to be up then get up but he's getting the rest of his shut eye.

Doing my level best to flip the bird to Pride Month.

Especially now that we have Pride Month Star Wars.

What really pushed me over the edge was going to Dallas ISD’s website and they have a big frickin rainbow flag. “Celebrating Pride Month”.
