Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Chinese Army Shows Off New "Robodogs," Robots Armed With Automatic RiflesThe age of man is over. The day of the robot dog is here.
Last month, it was disclosed that United States Marines special operators were testing robotic dogs armed with guns based on sentry automatic machine guns. Robotic quadrupeds have become increasingly common across the US military in recent years, for everything from bomb disposal to perimeter patrols, but arming them is a newer development.
... Britain has its own initiative, too. It has been testing Boston Dynamics's "Spot" quadruped as well as Ghost Robotics's V60 for future use alongside ground troops. Speaking about the V60, Dave Swan, the lead engineer of FCG Expeditionary Robotics Centre of Expertise, said the "quadruped offers increased situational awareness for soldiers on the ground", with the "potential to act as the eyes and ears for soldiers on the front line". With a gun on its back, however, one of these machines becomes more than a sensor array.Below, the unarmed version of Spot and the V60.
"Trials have previously taken place with robotic dogs," said a Ministry of Defence spokesman, exploring "the potential they hold for delivering mission-critical supplies, scoping out hazardous areas, or performing combat tasks that are deemed too dangerous for humans."This was kind of obvious, but as I wrote a long time ago, the world's militaries were looking at the incredible and very cheap performance of commercially-available drones in the Ukraine dropping explosives directly on to vehicles or defensive positions and taking notes. Now that's what I'm talking about.
Throwflame's Thermonator, the first flame-throwing robot dog, is now on sale for $9,420 It has a range of 30 meters. It is controlled by phone, has a one-hour battery, lidar mapping and an onboard camera. *Includes world domination.Don't worry -- we can still take them in hand-to-hand. (Fake video, of course.) From the moment I understood the weakness of my flesh, it disgusted me. I craved the strength and certainty of steel. I aspired to the purity of the Blessed Machine.
Your kind cling to your flesh, as if it will not decay and fail you. One day the crude biomass that you call a temple will wither, and you will beg my kind to save you. But I am already saved, for the Machine is immortal… ...even in death I serve the Omnissiah. Posted by: Red Turban Someguy - The Republic is already dead! at July 12, 2024 04:34 PM (eYoxG) 7

Posted by: Peaches I had a few semesters of Mandarin Chinese in college. One of my instructors, when I mentioned dogs, replied in Chinese that she was afraid of dogs. Many years later, in NoVa, I went to pick up my dry cleaning from a Chinese laundry. It was warm weather, so the front door of the establishment was open. A random dog -- a fairly large one, like a lab or a German shepherd, just happened to wander in, and all the Chinese working there were in a tizzy until I escorted the canine out. In both cases, the people expressing fear of dogs were exclusively women, so maybe the men are different, and tolerate the bigger dogs. Posted by: Bulgaroctonus at July 12, 2024 04:46 PM (v6JzV) 86

Willowed from last thread...but the difference between Youngkin and Vance, and why Youngkin is far superior...
Youngkin ran in a state with a devastated state R party (like Trump 2016 and the national R party), and he brought everyone back together. When he got in office, he didn't move leftward, but actually put in place policies he promised in the campaign and people to execute them with litmus tests that meant they would do it (no DEI, no trans, pro-life). And he did this in a formally blue state that has now definitely become purple again. He's still popular with all genders and races and with the R base here. And while he has not delivered everything, he turned the crank for us...the right way. For once. Is he perfect - no. Is he ambitious - yes. But when faced with the prospect of how he'd lead a state, he led it with grace and dignity, but kept a firm backbone about his values and promises. Senators never have to prove themselves. Governors do. Thus, a governor is always to be more trusted b/c you can see their track record. Posted by: Nova Local at July 12, 2024 04:50 PM (exHjb) 108

You know what seems to be one of the real, game changing things in the Ukraine war now? Cheap commercial motorbikes.
Russia has for a while a strategy of getting small infantry teams into covered positions, a town or trench and digging in, then scouting out where the other side is and hitting them with arty, drones, air power, whatever. When the other side quits shooting back they move in. reset and repeat. One of the difficulties they had is walking, or even riding an APC was slow and allowed enemy drones to hit and KO an expensive APC even if the men got out. So they started putting the men on bikes and dumping them at the new place and taking cover. Most bikes can be recovered, but even if some or lost its just a cheap motorcycle. And the bikes are not worth the other side even blowing them up. Posted by: Oldcat at July 12, 2024 04:54 PM (eoQWY) 133

Or a swarm of drones destroys a robo-battalion's diesel or gas generators and soon the robo-dogs and other systems using large rechargeable batteries run out of juice. Large storage batteries will be toast too, after drone video traffic analysis shows where they are. Solar cells? Fuhgeddaboudit. Seems to me very-high kill probability point air defense using small drone kamikazes or lasers or something is the next big thing for Ukrainian battlefields. Maybe it already is and I didn't get the memo.
Posted by: Gref at July 12, 2024 05:01 PM (5fDan) Most serious drones are airborne, delivering weak munitions. Their best work is in spotting for other, better weapon systems. They can direct in a kamikaze drone to pick off troops but that isn't significant. Their main effect is to disperse and slow down troop movement - a column of tanks on a road is gonna get blasted if it bunches up and gets spotted.
