What they did in legalizing it was to get rid of all of the criminal penalties for dealing in marijuana; they also dismantled most of the enforcement structure. What former dealer, who wasn't scared of criminal charges, is now going to be scared at the thought of getting a ticket from the revenue police? They've got carte blanche to operate freely, PLUS they will always undersell the state stores because they don't pay the heavy tax burden.

1) The new FOX News poll is depressing. Biden has had a noticeable uptick, & there's no avoiding that by saying "but look at the internals" or something. It's a bad news bear. It's the top headline at FOX News right now for anyone who wants to see the grim details.
2) The news from Israel is even worse. There is a noticeable war of words between top IDF commanders & Netanyahu. Essentially Gen. Hegari is saying, "Hamas can't be defeated."
I wonder if this will be the final straw that destroys the coalition war govt. Certainly Netanyahu's multitude of opponents were getting close to achieving this already. It looks to my untrained eye as if war weariness is setting in.

It's been a disaster in Oregon, too.
Marijuana is an agricultural crop - it's not a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow.
The market is oversaturated with pot shops, and not as many people smoke marijuana as the dopers would like to believe.
So prices are rock-bottom, no one is making any money, and bankruptcies and consolidations are the trend of the day.

I knew once it was "legalized" it would mean it would be taxed and regulated driving up the cost and hassle to obtain it.
This would provide a window for the criminal side to sell it cheaper and without all the red tape.
The fact is the vast majority of users just want to get high without having to jump thru hoops or spend a fortune.

I read the reason for the full court press against Netanyahu's government right now; the current session of the Knesset ends on June 30. They reconvene in September. If a decision to go to the early election will not be made by June 30, it will be moved to the next session in September, and by law, the election will take place at a minimum three months from the agreement, so at the earliest, it will be December 2024. The left and Biden want to have an election by September, before the American Election. So they've got 10 days to pull that off.

I remember the "debates" with the Libertarians. Lots of revisionist history about the Temperance Movement and Prohibition then these claims that marijuana isn't addictive or harmful and then the bleating about how the tax money will be distributed by the government to treat addiction.
If there is no harm or addiction, then why provide treatment? Just Libertarians promoting Small Government by establishing whole new taxing authorities and social programs.

For a significant amount of time, the University of Mississippi hosted one of the very few legal sites for cultivating cannabis. It was tied in to the researchers in Ole Miss's Pharmacy School. There was a very high fence, and a guard tower, that, for a brief period, was occupied by an armed guard. Spotlights and all sorts of security doo-dads.
Weed being Weed and college students being college students, there were a number of attempts made to snag a few of the plants. My personal favorite story of that is when a small group of Fraternity guys carefully cased the place and picked the ideal moment at night to use fly fishing rods to grab some herbage.
Didn't work, but I admire their effort and originality. Fly-Fishing For Green Bud in Oxford, Mississippi - good title for an aspiring Richard Brautigan.

There used to be that legal and cheap substance that on the continuum was somewhere between caffeine and cocaine as far as providing that "kick": Ephedra. Apparently Mormons could now get jacked up in the morning like everyone else by drinking Ma huang tea.
But like all good things, the USG banned ephedra and legalized weed. Its like they wanted production to stop.

Evidence is starting to come out about harmful effects of it, but the weed lovers don't want to hear it.
I was on a firearms forum that LOVED their weed and they would make pot-needle jokes whenever a study was mentioned showing the link between heavy weed use and it's long term effects.

I thought my toaster was bad because I have to punch the bread down twice to get it toasted. It turns out the problem is my home-made bread. It doesn't have any sugar in the recipe and doesn't have any additives like baking powder to help it rise, so it won't brown as fast as commercially made bread.

Feb 30th has a been real date. You can look up the details. Sweden got screwed up with Julian vs Gregorian, and got back in sync with a Feb 30th, for instance. It has existed in other calendars.
Feb 31st has never existed, and that has been used for "unknown date" on gravestones.

I was at a Vietnamese farm house having lunch one day. I was accompanied by my counterpart, my medic and my interpreter. As we ate a jar of rice whisky, their moonshine, and a shot glass made rounds of the table. This shit would make you teeth numb. My medic didn't drink, so I had to take his shot. After that we played a game of "Spin the Ducks Head". Kind of like spin the bottle but whomever the bill pointed to had to take a shot.
It all gets a little blurry after that. Evidently I made it up to the road, as some locals picked me up out of a ditch, put me in the back of a Lambretta three wheeler and delivered me to our team house. I had words with the medic when I sobered up a day or two later.

The beach is absolutely mobbed. It was also sunny and 75. Beautiful sunset, but I'm not going out there. It's a zoo. Very loud music and cars and motorcycles. The current value (as of epoch J2000) is 365.2417 mean solar days per tropical year (this is 365.2419 ephemeris days). Around 1900, when they got this stuff figured out to this high of a precision, the mean tropical year was about 365.2422 mean solar days.
Thus the Gregorian is still adding a little too many leap days.

If the mean tropical year remained constant, the Gregorian would be good to about 1 day in 3500 years.
But because currently the tropical year is getting shorter (this is the long term dance of Milankovitch cycles), and the mean solar day is getting shorter, the Gregorian calendar will be about a day behind in the year 3200.
Turns out that it work out to skip the 400 year leap year in 3200, the continue as normal through 3600 and 4000, but then switch to a 500 year cycle. That is drop add century leaps every 500 years.
That would keep the calendar in sync to well over 10,000 years in the future.

There is an R Coronae Borealis as well, a variable yellow supergiant.
I got interested in just where this "T" business comes from. Took me a while to find. Google and others are just worthless for this. 15 years ago, it would've found it immediately.
It's a variable star naming conventions, applied to the Bayer system. It starts with 'R', and once you get to 'Z', it gets complicated.

The French use liaison constantly. The one thing about the French is they want to use as few words as possible and they want to sound as musical as they can. You learn from textbooks wrong because that’s not how they speak and I’m not talking slang on the street but how regular people in middle-class jobs talk and even how the highest in this society talk. We shouldn’t call them out for making their language so complicated because we do the exact same thing though to us it is just normal so we don’t notice it. English pronunciation is the same as the written word either and English is not a phonetic language just like is not. In fact, French is more clear on the rules of pronunciation than our own language. At least they have particular rules that you can apply so pronunciation is not a big thing in French.

Could be a dialect thing - in Hochdeutsch the umlaut is akin to an "urr," but some Deutsch speakers render the r more fully, while others sort of chop it off a bit sooner. If you're literally just making the sound for the umlaut O it comes across closer to an OOOO with the lips extended slightly, but once it's included within a word it gets the urr or near urr sound.

There are many reasons one might wish to have a bottle around that have nothing to do with drinking. Alcohol is difficult to get past a certain purity, but the high grade Everclear is close to 200 proof. The watered down stuff might not be suitable for certain hobbyist use.
As mentioned it is good for making tinctures, solvents for electronics or electrical contact cleaners, all kinds of things.

Had an argument once over 'short-lived'. The other person said it was a short 'i' whereas I pronounced it with a long 'i'. We were both right.
In a poem, I used 'aged' as two syllables (A-jed). It's the 'archaic' way it was once pronounced. Fit the meter of the line. (Right, Ambrose? Long story on that.)

When I had been farming for some yrs, maybe 10 or so, I walked into the barn and was surprised by a large snake which started rattling at me. I went and grabbed a hoe nearby, proceeded to hack the thing to death and broke the blade off the hoe. It was about 3 ft long.
Next day when I drove in there was a similar snake in the lane. Drove over it, checked it out and that didn't kill it. Forget how I finished it off, but I did.
Later figured out it was a pair of spotted adders? that can sound, like rattlesnakes. Also very good at killing rodents. But I didn't know and they really couldn't be around our buildings and maybe surprise my 95 yo grandmother.
Obviously, I feel bad still, wish it could have worked out some other way. I always loved the wildlife around when I was farming, except when it interfered in making a living farming.

Water-ethanol form an azeotrope, at 96% ethanol per volume. That translates to 192 proof (just double the by volume percentage).
That's the limit of distillation at 1 atm pressure. You can go to vaccum distillation and make the azeotropic point disappear.
But there are other, more economical ways to get pure alcohol.

American students in high school in college regularly tell their fellow classmates to take Spanish because it is easier than French. Language teachers will tell you that Spanish is easier in the first year or so, because the pronunciation is easier and we have been exposed to more of the Spanish words overtime. But the reality is French is inherently easier language because it gets easier the further you go into it the further you study it while Spanish gets more difficult the further you move into it.

I like learning Spanish and French. I enjoyed learning them both. But if anyone tells you Spanish is easier to learn than French, then you should know right then that that person knows nothing about either language. The reality is all foreign languages are difficult. There is not a single language to learn..
You have to have a serious serious dedication to learn foreign language. I love studying languages, but I wish I focused only on French or only on Spanish, but for some reason that is not who I am. Looking at myself personally, it makes sense because by nature, I’m always interested in the other thing. Sorry for the deep dive in so quickly, but I agree with you that is not easier than in fact I know people who teach those languages and they will tell you that.

I will give you one great example. Laphroig 86 proof scotch whisky is good. The bear proof version of that whiskey is considered by many to be the best scotch whiskey of that age. It is more difficult to find the barrel proof but if you ever compare them, it is like you’re trying two different whiskeys. It is funny and weird, but very interesting to me that just adding some water to that Laphroig changes the character of the whiskey that much

They are awesome, and not that difficult to sharpen. I've used them to clear out stands of cane of various varieties, as well as Kudzu and various other kinds of brush. When you've worked with one for a while, you can literally just hold it by just above the end of the grip and sling it one-handed to great effect.

I will say this to a language learners, particularly those who use Duolingo. In some way, that app accentuate your learning and makes you think you’ve gone further than you have. I say that because there was this thing there where to notice words and type their English equivalent really quickly like almost in a game, just tapping it, tapping and tapping.
I have studied Spanish for years, but I tried it with Italian and did almost as well in Italian.
No, I do not think that means I’m some crazy gifted language learner. I think it proves at least to me that I’ve learned a lot less than I think I have. If I can do the same thing that I do with French Spanish languages I have studied for over 30 years, Then what is the point of it all?

Had an argument once over 'short-lived'. The other person said it was a short 'i' whereas I pronounced it with a long 'i'. We were both right.
In a poem, I used 'aged' (A-jed) as two syllables. It's the 'archaic' way it was once pronounced. Fit the meter of the line.

What's the point in having an accent if you can't exaggerate it every now and then? There's a myriad of fun uses for it.
I have to say, though, in all honestly, both Mrs. Drake and I are constantly meeting people here in Central Mississippi and in other parts of the state who tell us that we don't sound "Southern." Both of us born and raised here, but somehow our mode of speech leads people to ask us if we're from the Midwest or the Northeast. A local BBQ food truck guy was convinced that I was from South Dakota, or Montana at the least. Why this is, we do not know. Were we to show up elsewhere in the country, we'd surely sound "Southern," but not in our own native state.

Not a biased opinion, but Italian is probably the easiest European language because it has almost zero exceptions; what you see is what it sounds like.
On a related note how did the port city of Livorno get converted to Leghorn in English? Also Genova lost its V in English to Genoa. Pronunciation went nuts:
Ge-no-va became Ge-Noah.
I have more. Of course Italian has also messed up foreign names: London --> Londra; Berlin --> Berlino
Finally some fun: Chicago can be written as Ci cago which means "I shit there". If you didn't know how to pronounce Chicago in English then you would read it as Kicago since the ch has a k sound - always.

It kills because Virginia is a very southern state and it’s a southern states wanted to fight over who is more southern Virginia would have cause. But the reality is most of the people that live there are not from that state they’re from the north mostly New York, Pennsylvania, etc.
There are some pretty distinct Virginia pronunciations, but they are not in Northern Virginia. I personally am southerner and I’ve never lived north of Mason Dixon, but I was a military brat so I moved all over. I took one of those online test were they choose where you are from by your diction, and to be honest, it was crazily on on point.
I can do the southern draw too. It is weird that in my Texas family half of the people have the southern drawl and the other half do not.

The "Big 3 Network", region neutral, non-accent voice, has affected us all since at least the early 1970s.
Murrow had a Mid-Atlantic, rapid stratacco "voice", accent and pacing. The "Hindenburg" announcer, even more. William F. Buckley personified the elite, Northeastern Accent, in one.
But the flat, atonal "midwestern" accent didn't OFFEND in surveys in most every market, coast to coast.
And so, THAT became the "in demand" voicing for news, sports, advertising, and more.
And now you know.... the REST of the story!

The last two eruptions were around 2 - 3 magnitude.
So, when it goes you'll see a new, naked eye star. For about a week. Then it will dim back again.

My late wife was born and bred in Southern Illinois. After she spent 2 years in Boston, then 19 years in South Africa and then came back to S IL, people would ask if she was from New England. It was the South African English that did it. As for me, people don't know what to make of my accent but love it.

When it comes to pronunciation, this is a common thing in every language in every country, There is no one proper way to speak, though people do seek them out. I guess in the UK they look to the Royal family as the Received Pronunciation. In France, the Persian accent is what some called the correct one, But that is dumb because the country is huge and there are many different accents.
In Spain, they will tell you there is the language or accent of Madrid. They say that because in the deep south of Spain, the Spain, we think of when we think of Spain, they speak very differently. In Italy, they would tell you the language of Florence or in particular the City of Sienna has the best diction.
I speak like the man on the news as the old thing says, but that is just happenstance. When I find interesting is studying these things to me it is about learning and enjoying the endeavor. No one pronunciation is better than the other( It is literally retarded to think that that is so.

Quint, I got lucky. My mother was from Western Canada, so she talked, and I speak, more like William Shatner or Michael J. Fox than I do any deep-Souther. There was also drama training at school and some years of radio announcer work for me. But yes, people are all different. Though when I was dating, hearing the classic "Yat" dialect ("Goin' to make groceries, dawlin'") coming from a girl made me, unfairly, deduct about 10 IQ points from my estimation of her.

Gotta love that dry heat. Hubby and I attended a Fiesta Bowl in Phoenix some years back. While it wasn't super hot in January it was warm enough with absolutely no humidity. Hair and makeup looked the same at midnight as they did at 8:00 in the morning. Dry heat is a girl's best friend.

My brief time living in the UK introduced me to a number of words where the Brits just threw standard pronunciation out the window. A Mr. Menzies, for example, was to be called "Mr. Ming-ess." My personal favorite, though, since it was a common name where we were, was Featherstonehaugh. Brits pronounced it as "Fan-shaw."

Some have a tin ear for four languages. There is no question about that, but that does not criticize their intelligence in fact and someways. It might make them more intelligent to filter out things that slide out don’t mean anything to them.
I like studying for languages, but to be honest people have no clue how difficult it is to learn a foreign language. It is like people who want a black in karate and get Discouraged when they realize it might take five years.
To really learn the foreign language conversionally and fluently in this country if it is not Spanish, it is probably gonna take you up to 10 years and that is doing it diligently every day. Spanish could be easier but at the same time you were gonna have to engage with people on a daily basis and in my recent experience, unlike back in the 1980s, they don’t want to speak Spanish with you in general. They are not impressed and they don’t care., I might sound harsh, but that is what I am seeing on the ground, People say Spanish speakers

If you still care about languages, go for it, I like French, but I also like Spanish. If there was nothing on the table, I would go with Italian because for sure that is the most enjoyable language to learn. In the end, if you really care about studying for languages, do it I’m not trying to dissuade you. But there is an argument to be made that improving. Your own language is better because the speakers of that foreign language would give anything to be better than English..

This dry heat - I have literally never experienced it. Humid, near-tropical Hell heat has been the norm for both Mrs. Drake and myself. If you've ever seen the movie Biloxi Blues, the line delivered by Matthew Broderick near the beginning is on point: "Man it's hot. It's like Africa hot. Tarzan couldn't take this kind of hot."
And they were on the pleasant, balmy Gulf Coast!

I recall being on a tourist bus in Seville, Spain, and it comes on you slowly, but you realize you are cooking:. The humidity is low, but the heat is very high as we went round and round on that bus I would check out the bank thermometer sign, and even in Europe that sign said 100 degrees.
I have family in Austin and just as being a part of living there they pretend the temperature Is not what it is. It is the thing they do if you don’t acknowledge it it’s not happening.
Where I live, we might get 100° once or twice in a five-year period. Even four or five days in a row in the 90s is weird and unusual. I never call out my Texas relatives because the sun is just much brighter there it’s not going to change and it is simply part of their life. I could never live in that heat again. I’ve done that I’ve been there but no way I’m going back to boil in that.
