50 Seriously though, I think everything in this painting is lovely except the two people. They seem to be oddly proportioned. It drags down the work.

Get rid of those two and it's a very nice piece.

He worships the Ground She Walks On - a limerick

A young sailor home from the sea
His betrothed sits nearby on bent knee
She said, "Oh my darling Bert,
When you're done smooching the dirt,
Do you think you might spare a kiss for me?"

When I was a young boy
I wanted to sail around the world
That's the life for me
Living on the sea
Spirit of a sailor
Circumnavigates the globe
The lust of a pioneer
Will acknowledge no frontier

I remember you by
Thunderclap in the sky
Lightning flash, tempers flare
'Round the horn, if you dare

I just spent six months in a leaky boat
Lucky just to keep afloat

When I saw this picture I saw a young sailor back home after two, maybe three long years on the ocean waves, who, when he reached thh old homestead, exhausted and weary rushed right past his fiancee and fell into the loving embrace of the green, green, grass of home. She loves him so much that she is willing to take second place.

The term "emasculate" is problematic. “Humiliate”, “call him a liar”, etc. are fine. There is no parallel for a female candidate, which implies that being masculine is a good thing but being feminine is not.

This is a man on man thing. By God we are fighting for our freedom, our democracy, and in some cases our lives. Use whatever works to fight evil. I hope I have enough courage to take a few dings to save lives.

Scrappy Joe from Scranton. He's up to it. Instead of showing Trump as rude and aggressive, they need to show him as a loser. Bring up things like the business failures and needing to pay for sex.

Prediction: Trump will rant and whine during his opening statement, complain about format and media in general, declare he wishes this was a real debate because Biden wouldn't stand a chance, say the public deserves better, and storm off the stage.

From the Greek name Τρύφαινα (Tryphaina), derived from Greek τρυφή ( tryphe) meaning "softness, delicacy". This name is mentioned briefly in the New Testament.

169 Garden of Memory dot net: THE VERGE
Historic Painting: "Home from Sea" by Arthur Hughes, 1862. Sean Munger, Aug 2, 2023

This beautiful painting shows many of the characteristics I love about 19th century art.

This is a picture of sorrow, pathos and loss. It's also one of extraordinary beauty, richness and vivid detail. It's called Home from Sea, although the artist, Arthur Hughes, based it on an earlier work he did in 1857 called The Mother's Grave. In this version, painted in 1862, a boy, evidently just back from a tour with the navy, mourns over the grave of his mother who has apparently died while he was at sea. His sister sits nearby, unable to console him. While the expressions are soft and not very anguished, the overall effect of the picture is quite wrenching. Notice also the detail of the lamb behind the tombstone in the background. It's symbolic: a child separated from its parent (the sheep to the left) by the grave.

The landscape is one of those old churchyards that are so evocative of the English countryside. It is believed that the place depicted here is Chingford, Essex. (more)

176 Although not as dynamic as some Pre-Raphaelite paintings, this shares the dramatic poses and brilliant use of light and color typical of the school. I'm always amazed at how the realistic detail of the clothing, plants and other items like the churchyard cemetery can be achieved. Such details make the often mythical themes feel closer to the viewer.

In a case like this painting the style invites the viewer to wonder what the story could be. Is the sailor, just off the ship with his sea bag still by his side , grateful to be home safe? Is that his mother watching him grieve in a cemetery at the loss of a young wife or child? (A real possibility considering how long a sea voyage could take.) Viewers can't help but become involved in the image.

271 SCOTUS says, 8-1, domestic abusers can be stripped of owning firearms. Thomas goes, not so fast, like when and for how long, when does one get them back. SCOTUS says nothing; blue states immediately move to declare all Republicans domestic abusers. OK, that was hyperbolic, but not by much; New Mexico's governor, via a public health order, tried to ban firearms.

335 Good old Wickedpedia indicates that Hughes was born in 1832. Thus he became engaged at age 18, and probably had very little income at that time. Most likely both his parents and the bride's wanted the couple to wait a few years until he could support a wife and both would be a bit more mature. The marriage turned out well, and they had six children together. The daughter who acted as model for this painting was very young at the time, probably about seven! Online commentary about the painting indicates that the children's mother has died, based on the title of the earlier painting, which showed only the boy and was titled "A Mother's Grave."
