Daily Tech News 17 June 2024

Top Story

  • Emulating a Macintosh on a Raspberry Pi... Pico. (axio.ms)

    A rather neat little project.

The original Mac had 128k of RAM, and the Pi Pico has 256k of main memory, so in theory this should be possible. All you need to do is squeeze a Motorola 68000 emulator and the Mac ROMs and hardware emulation into that remaining 128k.

Oh, and that hardware emulation includes the video, and the Pi Pico has no video hardware.

No problem, not with the help of some street cables and a bit of inspired cheating.

Tech News

  • Asus has promised to stop doing what it promised to stop doing a year ago and didn't. (Gamers Nexus)

A year ago the news sites gave them the benefit of doubt. This time, not so much.

  • The future is bright for electric vehicles, say analysts as they switch their personal investments into oil and gas. (Yahoo)
A global survey conducted by consulting firm McKinsey, also released Wednesday, included this shocker: 29% of EV owners told McKinsey they plan to replace the EV they bought with a gasoline or diesel car, a figure that jumps to 38% for U.S. EV owners.
This is why California is planning to outright ban all non-E Vs. Can't have the peasants choosing what works for them.

  • Cases of flesh-eating bacteria are skyrocketing in Japan. (MSN)

More cases have been reported so far this year than in all of 2023, and the mortality rate is 30%.

It's just streptococcus, but streptococcus caused a whole host of nasty diseases before readily-available antiseptics and antibiotics, many of them fatal.

  • Minisforum has a couple of new midi-PCs. (Liliputing)

These are eight inches square and two inches tall - much bigger than NUCs which are around four inches square, but not big. The Mac Mini is about this size.

The AMD model takes a low-power desktop CPU, up to 96GB of RAM, and four M.2 SSDs, and has two 2.5Gb Ethernet ports, USB 4, OCuLink, HDMI, DisplayPort, and the usual swarm of USB 3 ports.

The Intel model includes a choice of 12th and 13th generation laptop chips, and supports 64GB of RAM, two M.2 slots, a half-height PCIe slot, two USB 4 ports, two 10Gb SFP+ Ethernet ports, two 2.5Gb Ethernet ports, plus HDMI and the usual USB 3 and USB 2 ports.

If you want something small but with more flexibility than a NUC, these might suit.

  • Apple has joined the race to find an AI icon. (Tech Crunch)

And they mean that in the technical sense, a little graphical symbol that says "You are stupid and racist, now give me your credit card."

I suggest a mugger wearing an N95 mask.

  • How can we convert OpenAI's pricing page into a news article? (Tech Crunch)

Oh how we will laugh when you are all replaced by the very systems you pretend to report on.

Disclaimer: Ha ha ha. Like that. That's how we will laugh.

12 So our beloved NYS is mandating that all new homes must have a EV charger installed. I suspect the Amish (of which are many in my area) are pleased with that ruling. EV horses need that for overnight charging. I guess this goes along with no more gas and oil after 2035 or something. The governor wants to be the first state to ban fossil fuels, she knows best they say.

27 3 years ago my friend was all set to get an electric car within the next 2 years. Now? Not so much. This past winter put a knife in it for a lot of people thinking about it after seeing the lines to get your car charged in No Ill.

Posted by: Bruce at June 17, 2024 04:41 AM (KBZ5e)

28 ICE is for closers. EVs are losers. My take on why the left, the part with real political power, hates fossil fuels is because the global decentralized fossil fuel energy system is difficult to control. An all electric world is so much better because it is a single point of failure so to speak. You want to drive your car, run your AC, have lights, cook food? Well, you need to talk to The All Electric Federal Agency to get some and if annoy them, well, you get rationed or cut off at the flip of a switch. And it is even better if the production method is unreliable since that gives them cover to say and do anything. The green energy nonsense is a cover, something useful to rile up the protest mob.

34 Hot and dry here and more to come. Yesterday the weather guessers were screaming about a thunderstorm coming thru in the afternoon with WIND!!! and HAIL!!! and maybe TORNADO!! and also a half inch of rain.

An hour and a half before it was to happen all of the above was still on the menu, but now about a quarter inch of rain. Still good for me, it would save me from watering today.. Then, the big moment arrived and... a 15 minute light shower.

Tell me again how much the weather has changed from 100 years ago?

36 These are eight inches square and two inches tall - much bigger than NUCs which are around four inches square, but not big. The Mac Mini is about this size.

These are interesting. For many peeps computing, appliances, like the Mac Mini that are completely baked and reasonably performant, could easily be a space saving plug and play device that lasts somebody 5 to 7 years. And with AMD's new integrated graphic performance they could do some gaming, video processing, and image editing.

I am at a point in my life where my computing are nothing like I once needed during my career years. My heavy lifting these days is digital photography and that doesn't need a super computer in a box. When I look carefully at my usage these days, I mostly get a box, turn it on, and use it for years. I still crack open my PC from time to time because I like fussing around with it for the sake of fussing around with it. This is sort of like stroking the hair of a cat the wrong just to see what happens.

I was having some fun. When these kinds of questions come up on Reddit, for example, some clueless person always jumps in and goes, "WELL, IF YOU HAD BOUGHT A PC THIS WOULDN'T BE A PROBLEM!" And yes, the all caps text is an essential part of the experience.

Makeup: I bought my wife an air-brush makeup system about five years ago. She uses two separate bottles of makeup that last about three to six months. Ten dollars a bottle. One is lighter, one darker. As seasons change and her skin get darker or lighter she modifies the number of drops of each makeup.

The results are pretty damn amazing. In the long run a helluva lot cheaper then hand application.

I believe my sister has one. Since we went remote and after I retired the need for daily makeup wad not called for any longer. Frankly, since my husband passed last year I haven't much felt like it anyway. I've noticed that uniquely feminine interest returning though. LOL. You can take the makeup away from the girl but you can't take the makeup out of her. That doesn't make much sense but you get what I mean.

We lived in Indianapolis for some years. I found it to be much like Columbus but without the big university. It was pleasant. Got my one and only speeding ticket there for going 45 in a 15 zone. 72 una - copy both lines and paste them in to the browser. It will automatically combine them back into one line.

There's a problem with these comments and long URLs on some phone browsers - it makes the whole page unreadable - so Biden's dog is breaking them up like that.

Doesnt work in edge and it no longer works in firefox for me.

Please use a url shortener instead.

73 I could never find tape when I needed it. Now, after moving, I've set a goal to stay organized. Hence, I know where the tape is, how many rolls I have and if I need to buy more. We'll see how long this resolution lasts.
Posted by: Tuna

I have a complete inventory of everything I own right down to the number of forks I have and I still run out of tape at the worst possible moment and lose the remote control for extra credit. I wish you success but I'm not holding out much hope for you. It's difficult enough keeping track of trash day eve and trash day itself let alone tape. Now I have to go to the Dollar Tree and try and not buy cheap paint brushes in addition to tape.

Weird. I use edge and pasting these URLs into it worked just fine.

75 "There Is Nothing More Important Than Being Gay."

But only for 14 more days. Then some of us can go back to thinking that one's sexual orientation is not the most important thing about someone/ s

76 We lived in Indianapolis for some years. I found it to be much like Columbus but without the big university. It was pleasant. Got my one and only speeding ticket there for going 45 in a 15 zone. Trauma. The fine was $75 and that was a lot of money back then. I blame my son for banging his feet on the back of my car seat. The policeman didn't buy it.

Tuna, I'm thinking of SW IN, around Evansville, or in NW Kentucky, Owensboro area. Any experience with those?

80 Trump learned nothing from Charlottesville. Stop giving examples of how the left will twist your words. Because the left will use the clip of you saying that as proof that you said it.

Don't try to defend yourself, you'll just make the rapist more angry.

You could sit in a folding chair against a plain white wall and say nothing with no expression on your face and they'd still say you're evil.

But he needs to stop giving them video of him saying it. At the turning point event he said " They are going to twist my words and say 'I want to put beautiful women and young children in prison camps" just like he did in Charlottesville with the "fine people" remark. Now the Biden campaign is using that clip to show that he said it.

Of course they are going to twist his words. Just don't do the work for them.

No I'm afraid I don't. The furthest south and west of Indy I got was Bloomington and Brown county. You'd be right on the mighty Ohio river in Evansville.

88 The "left" are little more than a clique of sociopathic bullies. Every thing they do as the unthinking mass they are is done from Crazy Ex Girlfriend logic. You can't argue or reason with that, and the best thing to do is disengage entirely, but you still have to make it clear to normal people that none of the shit they say that you do is true.

Eventually, people will realize the crazy ex is a liar and stop listening to them. Writ large, i think this is starting to happen. Nobody listens to the CEG news-gossip complex anymore. Trump's a felon? Sure, why not, who cares, go away.

The response isn't to knuckle under to their bullying. It's to cut an ad in response showing the whole statement. Put it out on Ex-Twitter. It's an easy lay-up to counter such a flagrant lie, so take advantage of it. Otherwise, it's just letting their manupulation successfully muzzle you. He does need a crew who is better at that than he is, definitely. They're out there though.

Trump is not a felon. He can not even appeal the juries conviction until the judge 'officially' records it. He has not recorded it.

See what they're up to? In the public's mind Trump IS a felon. The judge know there is no way the conviction can withstand appeal, so he makes an appeal impossible.

You do not hate the left enough.

It's been 9 months and so far so good. If I make it a year I'm bragging to my younger sister. She has her doubts too as she says I'm the most disorganized person she knows. She should know because she helped me pack up and move.

94 Months ago I came across "teh ghey calendar" ... a list of most/all of the generally recognized LBGTQ months, weeks and days. It's extensive. And repetitive.

But there are only 3 months of the year that do not specifically mention these clinically insane people's illnesses; January, August and December (according to the list I saw.)

That so many choose, or were threatened to observe them is really the issue.

95 It's a bit like good drama... people reflexively dislike overly manipulative characters (unless they're manipulating the bad guys), and the emotional spark when an evil manipulative character gets their come-uppance is one of the great joys in literature. Use that, feed into it. Don't think "oh, no they're going to do this now", think "Oh, boy, now we can do that".

100 YELLEN: Well, I think the pandemic was a profoundly difficult time. But in the years leading up to the pandemic, Americans were really, many of them, working-class families just struggling with things like healthcare costs, the cost of energy, education costs, childcare costs.

And so they -- they really feel the cost of living. Housing is particularly unaffordable in so many parts of the country.

And I think the inflation that we experienced after the pandemic just compounded this feeling for them that life isn't affordable.

Fuck you peasants would have taken less effort.

101 Owensboro has a lot of the features of a larger town including the crime.

There a world-class conservatize school there too.

You want to move to the armpit of the Midwest. Absolutely some of the worst weather there when it comes to extremes.
