11 Does anyone else here study foreign languages like French and Spanish? I ask because it would be cool to have a club of people who study languages and want to work on them.

I’ve thought back a lot about my own language studies and I think I’m pretty much intermediate or advanced intermediate Spanish and French. Maybe that is my life. I’ll never be fully fluent either one, but it is the way it goes. Looking back at it and looking at it right now for some reason, I just can’t decide.

I personally really enjoy studying foreign languages. I know our own language is as rich as it comes, and it is also the dominant language, Except for particular situations, you really do not have to study foreign language, they all study ours.

But at the same time studying foreign languages has been a normal part of Western Education over hundreds of years. Then again the reality is how many native born Americans not from a family that speaks foreign language actually speak a foreign language? My guess is this is a very tiny amount, like less than five percent.

I just enjoy studying French in Spanish. I wish I could only choose one if I could, it would be French, but no one here speaks French

Posted by: Quint at June 16, 2024 06:17 AM (RAUB3)

12 No French.

Posted by: San Franpsycho at June 16, 2024 06:21 AM (RIvkX)

13 I also do enjoy Spanish so I focus on the Spanish from Spain, which is different. I also took Spanish in college and number no matter what anyone thinks a lot of that still is down there you still know it.

One thing about language that you ever discussed today is that yes it’s true. English is the dominant language and nothing is going to change that. There is this thing called global English, and that is kind of like the thing you get from people who answer at call centers. The funny thing about global English, and I’m not the first to recognize this, but it is really bad, It is really poorly spoken English. I hope we all do not default to this so-called global English English.

There is a common refrain about language learners from America, who are upset because the French and Spanish always respond to them in English because they think they’re English is better than the original speaker’s French or Spanish. But to be clear, we cuddle a lot of foreigners because their English is actually not really that good but for some reason, we don’t criticize bad English in the way other people could assize those speaking, their native tongue.

17 Writing about the subject, A very taboo subject. So many think they’re fluent in English, but they are not. And the general level of English worldwide is actually quite poor. I could look up the citations, but I promise you this is an issue. Many academics are researching.

But getting back to the American foreign language student who is eager and wants to speak with someone from abroad. When that person always responds in English because they think their English is better than the speakers foreign language, The foreign speaker of English is often wrong.

23 16, very nice. Reading is easier, but very important. I have mainly studied Spanish and French with some Italian thrown in. When people discuss whether French or Spanish is easier, I am pretty much anyone else’s actually worked on these things laughs, Because neither are. The old saw about Spanish being easier because the pronunciation is easier does not hold if you actually go deep into the languages. Shockingly Spanish is not pronounced like English nor is French. We would be lucky if pronunciation was a big part of learning the language.

One thing about Spanish versus French is while there are obvious a bunch of similarities, Words in vocab are different, And to truly learn the language, you need to learn upon thousands of words of vocab.

But the so-called extreme, right, just one big time in France and it has been clear for a long time. A bunch of them are sick of this left-wing crap. My sister second husband was German and she and my nephew moved to Germany with him after the marriage. My nephew was plunked down in a German school when he was middle school aged. Had to pick up the language or not succeed. He did just that and it proved to be advantageous to his career. His biggest complaint was that his German friends all wanted to practice their English so they would refrain from speaking German to to him so he could practice their language.

48 38, yes. The reality is very few native, born Americans, who aren’t from a household, such as a Hispanic household, ever learn a foreign language to the level of being able to speak it with others. It is not easy. You’d be better off, taking up karate and getting a black belt then actually trying to learn to speak Spanish or French fluently or even conversantly.

But I do think it is an Excellent intellectual exercise, To me, it is become to the point where if I don’t do it on the specific day, I miss it. I took in high school and college and that language has always been around me. I started about 30 years ago after a trip to Europe and sure hit it has been on and off again, but it has been 30 years. I am still plugging away because to be honest I enjoy studying languages more than watching a random TV show or seeing who won the latest ballgame.

Everyone has to find their own thing but for me it’s just something I enjoy and I realize it is very difficult. My recommendation is for sure to choose one language not to like me, but for some reason, I can’t make a final choice. I tried many times and now I realize that it’s just not who I am. So I am mediocre two foreign

55 45, they all know that they have to learn English to to survive in this world at least in the business world. Do you have to have English.

When an American or a Brit study Spanish or French yes it could be about business, but it is also about learning and wanting to communicate with others. For those studying English, it is almost always about survival and making a living.

This is a bit of the point I was trying to make because a lot of people learn this global English for jobs and it’s really a very poor level of English. We buy our nature would never criticize them, but the global English that is used for business these days is nothing like the language of the great poets and writers of history.

I keep hearing people saying how English is easy. Let’s be honest no western language is easy, but the absurdity of saying English is easy is crazy. I could spend the rest of my life, improving my English and so could pretty much anyone. Foreigners who learned basic English to get a job in a call center think they know English, OK.

Interestingly, I have heard it said that as far as people learning English go, they find English speakers very tolerant and understanding of their attempts to converse in English. Not to mention helpful. You won’t find this with other speakers of other languages.

Take German. In Germany, they being in Germany, the Germans will speak German with me. But if they are outside Germany, forget it, English it will be, and always.

According to DLI, Mandarin Chinese is the hardest language for an English speaker to learn. Although one thing English and Chinese speakers can agree on: as far as grammar goes, ultimately the only thing that matters in both languages is when the action takes place. The whole obsession with gender and how everything in a sentence is dominated by that as is the case with every other European language exasperates both English and Chinese speakers.

That’s another thing about languages I focus mainly on French and the reality is there’s a thing called written French, The French you learn in school, And the French actually spoken, not just on the so-called street, but by anyone. So literally, you have to learn three languages of French to actually understand it.

But the funny thing is the more I study languages such as French. I realize it’s it is exactly the same thing with English. We don’t speak the way we write and I’m not talking about dumbasses. I’m talking about educated people. Don’t speak the way we would teach the language in a textbook even people on the news and politicians don’t speak that way.

Languages are hard, but I really enjoyed doing it. I enjoyed the intellectual exercise. I’m not telling anyone else to go with that fishing hunting or hiking is probably a better thing to do better for your mind and body. But I have been flailing around with Spanish and French for 30 years so I doubt I’m going to stop.

Yeah, but with the technology and access we have now, there is no barrier to learning any language.

The only barrier is desire and dedication.

The State Department ranks the difficulty in learning languages and most languages fall under the 52 week mark, and the only languages that take longer are the super difficult, super different languages like Arabic and Asian languages.

89 One of the cool things about learning French is you learned why certain English words mean what they mean. It is a good thing language learners. Don’t always ask why a word means what it means, but it is also cool to learn that we use those words for a reason. When you study French, you see thousands of words related to English or words that we use in English much more than any other language by far.

English got a double dip of French because we had the influence of Latin, but also from the Normans who invaded England. French vocabulary is much closer to English than Spanish vocabulary. But there is also the Spanish vocabulary that is seed in because we have bordered Mexico for so long and had so many immigrants.

I jokingly say this, but it’s not a joke you have to give the credit they don’t move here.

Morning, early Sunday people!

My junior high and high school offered French, but I got shunted into Spanish in ninth grade and was stuck. By the time I was decent in that language and got curious about others, my HS didn't offer French any more. I think I'm glad; those silent letters would have floored me. German wasn't even on the school board's radar then, and I know those gigantic portmanteau words would have been tough.

Spanish has very few silents. "H" at the start of words, for instance, so that "Mi hija" gets elided into "mi-a" in actual speech.

95 66 there are many scholarly and also tabloid writings about how the level of “Global English” is poor. In many ways, the language has been reduced to the least common denominator. You often find foreigners who say English is easy.

I am no expert on the subject, but English is the language of some of the greatest writers and poets that have ever lived. It is not a phonetic language so the people that criticize French have to do some thinking if they’re native languages is English. Neither languages, phonetic or easy. The level of so-called global English is poor and those who study these things say so regularly.

Many linguiste say that Spanish is easier in the beginning and then it becomes much more difficult than French. In my experience, that is true. The reality is Spanish is more difficult than French , but it doesn’t rear its head until you get past the basic sentences. Spanish uses the subjunctive much more often than French, and also Spanish has about four or five more verb conjugations. No actual language expert would say Spanish is easier than French because it is actually harder.

148 I think it was seventh or eighth grade we had a class called introduction to foreign languages or IFL. Looking back at it, the teacher wasn’t that great because though she was nice, I don’t think she inspired anyone to pursue the foreign languages she was teaching.

It was a kind of cool class because for a semester, we did 1/3 Spanish 1/3 French and 1/3 German. That is for sure the time the teacher should’ve pushed people or at least inspired them into choosing one of those languages.

This is in the 1980s so we didn’t have Arabic or Zulu or whatever. And to be honest, there’s nothing wrong with that we were right. The wrong part is virtually. No one comes out of public school, speaking of foreign language.

And there is nothing weird about studying a foreign language, even if you love the English language, which is the best, This goes down in history, our founding father studied foreign languages, such as Latin French, Of course, many did not become fluent, Some did.

Normally, I'd agree, but we're rural and the cops wouldn't waste their time with that. They might stop to make sure an adult was around... maybe. The water's only a couple inches deep anyway. And, on a local social media page someone was asking where the local "swimming hole" was. (The directions were like; "go behind Wilson's barn, past the dead tree and go over the old bridge... it's on the left about 250 feet. Watch out for snakes.")

It's refreshing to see this.

228 Isn't that pretty much the action of diabetes? The reason why diabetics have to urinate so soften?

The kidneys normally have a threshold level for reabsorbing glucose. When sugar levels in the bloodstream are below this threshold (i.e. normal), virtually all of the glucose is returned to the bloodstream and none is detected in the urine. with diabetes, when the amount of glucose in the bloodstream exceeds the threshold, it resullts in "spilling" of sugar in the urine. Due to the higher solute content or osmolarity this results in water "following" the sugar, which makes you urinate more. The word diabetes means diuresis, i.e. increased amount of urine.

Jardiance blocks the kidneys' mechanism for reabsorbing glucose so glucose exits the body in the urine, lowering the average blood sugar levels (and thus the Hgb A1c)

230 Many linguiste say that Spanish is easier in the beginning and then it becomes much more difficult than French.

Try Hungarian. When I was a little kid, I picked up quite a bit from my Mom, and her mom, who lived with us. Plus, most of the older folks in my neighborhood came here from the "old country", so there was a lot of Hungarian spoken around me. But, once my grandmother passed, and many of the old neighbors passed on, Mom didn't speak it much anymore, and I lost most of it. Except for a few choice curses. Heh.
