Saudi Arabia Walks Away from the Petrodollar Agreement, a 50-Year Partnership to Only Sell Oil in Dollars?

Last month, Russia Hoaxer Jake Sullivan met with Saudi Arabia to try to work with them on various deal, despite Biden constantly propping up Saudi Arabia's enemy Iran and despite Biden calling the Saudi crown prince a murderer.

This is just some of that use of diplomatic Smart Power that Democrats are always bragging about.

No word about whether the Saudis agreed to renew the petrodollar deal, which helps prop up the value of the dollar by making it the only currency the Saudis will sell their oil for

But Newsmax reports that deal lapsed on June 9th, and reports further that the Saudis have decided against renewing it.

Heckuva job, Jakey!

The financial markets are bracing for disruption now that Saudi Arabia decided not to renew its 50-year petrodollar partnership with the United States, MSN reported.

This opens the door for Saudi Arabia to sell oil and other goods -- instead of exclusively in the U.S. dollar -- in multiple other currencies, including the Chinese renminbi, and in euros, yen, and digital currencies such as bitcoin.

Saudi Arabia's shift to other currencies is expected to hasten the global movement away from the dollar.

The contract, originally signed on June 8, 1974, expired on June 9, 2024, although the petrodollar system was established in 1972, when the U.S. decoupled its currency from gold.

The 1974 security agreement that the U.S. and Saudi Arabia signed heralded close cooperation between the two countries by establishing two joint commissions, one on economic cooperation and the second on Saudi Arabia's military needs.

The United States' goal was to motivate the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to ramp up its oil production and foster cooperation not only with that country but other Arab nations as well.

More from "Bizcommunity":

Saudi Arabia's petro-dollar exit: A global finance paradigm shift

The crucial decision to not renew the contract enables Saudi Arabia to sell oil and other goods in multiple currencies, including the Chinese RMB, Euros, Yen, and Yuan, instead of exclusively in US dollars. Additionally, the potential use of digital currencies like Bitcoin may also be considered.

America is Back, Baby!

Why don't you believe me?

I don't see the Gaslight Media reporting on this. But that is probably just because they're waiting for instructions from the White House about how to spin this as Akshually It's a Major Achievement.

The ones for Russian oil, sure. The current dodge for purchases to the US and EU is for Russia to ship to India, then for India to bump the price and resell it to the 'sanctioning' states for even more money. In dollars.

Posted by: Warai-otoko at June 13, 2024 03:20 PM (BpZ5k)

39 This is a *major* crack - not a total crackup, but a crack - in the Postware world monetary order.

The USD as the reserve currency is not going to be around for a whole lot longer. It's much bigger than the petrodollar. The USD is *the* preferred currency of international settlement and pricing. Huge amounts of stuff is priced and settled in dollars in cross-border trade, whether it involves the US or not. That is going to shift and shift hard.

We'll be *a* settlement currency, not *the* settlement currency. That's going to have profound effects, many of them bad. Some will likely be good, in that our currency will actually reprice and make imports expensive (better for domestic industry). But it is going to be a rough road and government finance is going to get *really* hard.

The best case is that we get some fiscal discipline and a more productive economy, at the expense of potentially unaffordable imports for a while and a whole lot of privation and make-do.

The worst case is the collapse of the country.

High stakes.

It's not about access to the resource. The Saudis could say "we now only accept Riyal." We can produce our own, or we can buy Riyal, or both. The petrodollar system always affected oil-poor and cash-poor countries much more than us, in that regard.

And it all started because Vicki Newland and her ilk thought that you could collapse Russia by forbidding them to use that exchange system to pay their bills and trade their goods. Once that failed she had an unwinnable war on her hands. Like how stupid do you have to think you can do this to a nation with so many resources as Russia does? And just as that capacity was exhausted, major changes are starting to get underway. That's not a coincidence.

The USD is not as safe and even-handed as it was (kicking Russia out of SWIFT and dollar-denominated insurance trades was a massive and potentially fatal miscalculation) but debt-fueled growth of international trade is winding down. Trade settlement flows aren't big enough to absorb our monetary malfeasance anymore, which invites (possibly even demands) alternatives.

This will probably accelerate the USD decline, but no other currency is really trusted either, and in crisis, money still flows to the USD for safety. But the globalists and old Joe seem intent on some new "global currency", probably digital. Perhaps then they will cancel Bitcoin and other cryptos? One (globalist) currency to rule them all.

It nearly worked. Nobody expected the balls-to-the-wall, high-risk response strategy from Russia's finance minister. He - a man called Anton Siluanov - won the war for Russia (and possibly saved Russia as it existed before the war) by preventing the collapse of the Ruble and buying time for parallel settlement to be thrown together.

I will not be surprised at all if they put him on a coin and name schools after him. Siluanov might go down as the most important figure in this era's economic history.

If you have a pile of marbles and a pile of IOUs for marbles, then when you come to settle the accounts and you find your IOUs are greater than your reserve of marbles, you get to divide the number of marbles by the number of IOUd marbles and that is what each IOU is worth.
It doesn't matter what Tommy or Mikey thinks they are worth. However if Tommy and Mikey are still holding out the hope that they will get full reimbursement for their IOUs in spite of having a good idea of the size of the pile of marbles, they have a good reason to keep playing along with the charade. 148 Democrats know they're toast in Nov, so they're going to do everything to destroy America and make it nearly impossible for Trump to fix, then in 2028 they'll try to blame him and Republicans for the shit economy they created.

I hope when he comes back in to office we do get new and vindictive Trump, instead of the generally passive one who was lead around by all the liberal Republicans he surrounded himself with. Tear down everything Democrats did, gut every leftwing program they spent trillions on, and actually run the country in a way that helps its citizens.

Unbacked emission of currency is counterfeiting.

The only question is "how long can you get away with counterfeiting?"

For us, the answer was "a long damn time, thanks to international trade flows, the petrodollar and the security umbrella."

The answer is never, "forever."

They could have gone back to barter and survived.

In this particular case of Siluanov saving the Ruble, it depended entirely on two things:
1. Gold reserves
2. Trust

We do not really have that second item anymore. He did. His high-stakes gamble to essentially launder the Ruble through gold to arrest the collapse of the currency depended selling a *lot* of Russian gold to the Russian people, and a *lot* of Russian people buying that gold an unfavorable prices. It hinged on trust in both directions - that the people wouldn't expatriate the gold, and that the government wouldn't expropriate it or forbid its trade internally after hoovering Rubles out of the system.

Would you trust the Department of the Treasury or the Federal Reserve if they tried the same play?

the last time this happened was when the Yuan dynasty's fiat currency collapsed, when everyone realized it was not redeemable. The currency was used throughout Asia and Central Asia, so a lot of it could be paid out to the end of no where before it was recognized as worthless.

Chinese paper money is interesting, it originated during the Song dynasty as a form of negotiable warehouse bond, which developed into a commodity backed note, and then was developed into a redeemable silver note under the Mongols or Yuan dynasty. Under the needs of warfare and government expansion they turned it into a fiat currency, which collapsed taking the market economies of Asia with it.

Odds are most of Ukraine goes down long before that - it may still be impossible in the new war system to put columns of tanks and trucks and sprint over the country like before but Russia keeps advancing with moderate cost while blasting anyone lined up against them. And they have started extending the line into new areas that Ukraine embezzled the money for building fortifications away, so when they send men to defend the area the artillery / drones / bombs and missiles have a field day.

What Russia did is say, "we need to reduce the number of chits, so we need *you* to give your chits to us, so we can dump them into a furnace. In exchange for your chits, we'll give you gold. The price isn't very good - you're going to overpay - but it'll work and everything will come out as a wash or even a modest improvement for you once we're done because the market is going to unlock and the currency will survive."

209 So, as a thought experiment, I wondered which would be better:

Paying off $1,000 extra on a mortgage every month or hoarding that for a year and then recasting the mortgage every year down $12,000.

I wasn't sure which would turn out better, but I assumed the recast because you'd be paying less every month over time. I even assumed that the difference between the old payment and the new payment would go to the recast amount at the end of the year.

So, which is better?

It's not even close: the $1,000 every month is a whole lot better. The loan gets done nearly 7 years earlier and costs $100,000 less in interest.

I thought I'd screwed up, so I dug into my formulas and the standard ways that recasting is calculated. I did it right.

The problem is that with the every month practice, you increase your principle payment at a faster schedule, but with the recast, you actually go backwards in what you pay monthly into the principle every year, needing to make up ground over a few months.

Just another example of the overall payment not being everything, but it was an interesting thought experiment anyway.

Ultimately, yes - production underpins everything. But the acute problem was a flood of useless Rubles that couldn't move anymore, which crushed its value. Those Rubles had to be repatriated, repatriated quickly, and sequestered to avoid a collapse. That collapse is what kicking them out of SWIFT was supposed to help achieve.

It failed.

I have been doing almost this exact same thing for the past 5 years and we have turned our 30 year mortgage into a 10 year mortgage. I put an extra $2,000 a month towards the principle since I started drawing my social security. Our mortgage will be done next December and we will have saved over $137,000 in interest on the loan. And that is with a 3.25% rate.

The recast yearly method still pays it off 8 years early, but the $1000 a month pays it off 15 years early.

I just thought there might be advantages inherent in the lowered monthly payment through the recast which didn't play out like I thought, or at least at levels that I imagined they would.

Posted by: Elric Blade at June 13, 2024 03:14 PM (iFTx/)

No - the ruble is worthless and always has been. And this is the problem. What do you replace the dollar with? BitCoin? Not enough of it, it is a limited scarce resource or so its backers say - hence its value.

Yuan? China? Yeah right. The Euro? Not a big enough circulation. The British Pound Sterling? There is a reason it no longer is the reserve currency.

It is the dollar, or a patchwork of individual regional deals, probably heavily in gold and other precious metals, which are not in enough quantity to really do the volume necessary.

Saudi's are just stuffing FJB's nose in it. If fate happens and Trump is victorious this will all go away. If Biden is re-elected, Saudi's will keep rattling the pans, but without a single place to go. Argentina will keep buying dollars.

Ask the British what happened to their currency after the end of WWII. We are going to see the same thing.
Posted by: Mister Scott

At the extreme end, like France and UK after WWII, you get export currency limits. Limits were placed on taking gold out of the UK (dunno about France) and how much pounds or francs one could take outside of those countries. Made importing goods very difficult in order to reduce the balance of trade deficits incurred by loss of reserve currency status and increased domestic inflation quite a bit.

Posted by: whig at June 13, 2024 04:16 PM (/0X3E)

312 We'll be *a* settlement currency, not *the* settlement currency.

Posted by: Joe Mannix (Not a cop!) at June 13, 2024 03:20 PM (d04cU)
==
I can easily see a world where there is no *the* settlement currency as the global trading environment continues to splinter into regional deals as the US continues their retreat from the world. This will impact the ability of the US government to spend as it likes - which is a good thing. As a black market currency the US dollar will be even more valuable as other currencies are exposed to be not very good. The Euro and Yuan top the list.

Depends on the times historically speaking. Ballot cheating makes it much more difficult to ascertain what is going on. But, low information voters can form policy preferences on the terms of outcomes but not necessarily come together on exactly what policy tweaking they prefer. Easier to just argue to scrap the whole thing--e.g. ending support to Ukraine, no money to Ham Ass or the Iranians, cutting out China from being able to trade here, and so on. Much harder for the public to tweak issues like what should be our military structure, size of the military, etc. Like in Vietnam, the preferences were to get out and not repeat Korea with teh Chinese flowing in to help the North Vietnamese. Average folks did not much care whether the US formalized relations with China.

Flexible? Maybe. Robust? Not really, because there is no substitute for the size of the dollar in efficiently moving transactions. Everything will slow down, and everything you don't grow or make yourself will become more expensive because the barter system (which is kind of what the baskets are) takes time to complete.

We will care less, because we will buy even less from the world than we do now, and we will force dollars on our trading partners or there will be no deal. This will result in the US garnering even more of the earthly wealth than we already do.

I would disagree. We are dealing with a contained regional conflict where an aggressor nation - Russia, attacked a smaller nation - Ukraine. As long as Europe is convinced the battle lines won't move, nothing much more will happen. If they think Russia can overrun those positions, Ukraine will be green lit to attack Russian logistic hubs in Russia proper and force Russia to decide how many men they want to send into the blender.

Eventually it will end with the two eastern regions subsumed into Russia proper. We just aren't there yet.

You have to have accurate voting lists which the RNC under Ronna and even during the McCain and Romney runs were badly out of date.

Second, the GOP for a long time wanted low voter turnout base elections. The Dems rejected that strategy after Kerry lost in 2004 and went to energize voter turnout. The GOP did not follow suit and relies on contacting voters that reliably turnout and fails to do much if anything on registering new voters except if a state party gets on the ball.

McConnell and his ilk hate casual voters because they prefer more popular policies rather than what the donors want.

343 But given that we can't drive off the Houthi from blocking the Red Sea I guess the Saudis wonder what the US can do to protect them regardless.

We can drive them off but it takes confronting Iran and destroying the logistics shipping missiles from Iran to Yemen. Given the Iran and Yemen are not contiguous--not that difficult to do.

The problem is more moral in nature than military. We chose not to do the simple things because we imagine that our military can overcome idiotic rules of engagement with hoodlums (same domestically regarding police and hoodlums).

344 At the extreme end, like France and UK after WWII, you get export currency limits. Limits were placed on taking gold out of the UK (dunno about France) and how much pounds or francs one could take outside of those countries. Made importing goods very difficult in order to reduce the balance of trade deficits incurred by loss of reserve currency status and increased domestic inflation quite a bit.

this is actually the milieu that the novel Goldfinger was written in: Auric Goldfinger was smuggling gold reclaimed from his pawn shops to Switzerland where the pricing was at actual market spot.
