Gun Thread: Father's Day Edition!

061624 calendar scaled.jpg

Howdy, Y'all! Welcome to the wondrously fabulous Gun Thread! As always, I want to thank all of our regulars for being here week in and week out, and also offer a bigly Gun Thread welcome to any newcomers who may be joining us tonight. Howdy and thank you for stopping by! I hope you find our wacky conversation on the subject of guns 'n shooting both enjoyable and informative. You are always welcome to lurk in the shadows of shame, but I'd like to invite you to jump into the conversation, say howdy, and tell us what kind of shooting you like to do!

Holy Shitballs! How in the ever-loving Hell did it get to be Father's Day? Well, evidently it is, so Happy Father's Day to all the Dad's out there. Please print a copy of this thread as your authorization to buy guns 'n ammo!

Your ol' pal Weasel is heading to the farm-o for a few days, so the GT is going to be a little on the lite side this week. I'm heading down on Thursday and planning to get home just in time to hit the big red post button Sunday evening. I have had another shed built which I need to organize and also know there is going to be a lot of vegetation to do battle with when I get down there. Plus all the usual rigors of Organic Tree Farming. Plus some relaxation.

With that, step into the dojo and let's get to the gun stuff below, shall we?

Progress continues with not one but two reports hot off the press from our pal and togishi, Dave!

061624 katana Arato scaled.jpg
Arato stone can you spot the defect? click for hint

This is the second Arato stone, or the second coarsest stone used. You can see it's just a pretty coarse and scratchy surface at this point although you can see the hamon (temper line) beginning to show. You can also see the small flaw that we discussed before starting. This is a spot where the softer core steel is coming through the harder skin steel. A flaw like this can not be removed, but will hopefully become a little less prominent with further polishing. It's unfortunate, but when you're four hundred years old, you will probably have a few blemishes too.

Q:Weasel, are you going to be wrinkly and blemished when you get to be 400 years old?
A:Are we talking people years or WeaselYears?

***

061624 Binsui 450.jpg
binsui-do stone click to embiggn

This is the binsui-do, roughly the third stone. Not much to look at so far. Like I originally described, just different variations of scratchy and gray until we get much closer to the end. This stone dose not cut as quickly as the arato, so the surface is a bit less uniform, but the geometry is actually getting sharper and more precise with each successive stone.

Well will you looky right there! it's starting to clean up and I can sort of see patterns in the steel!

What are Arato and Binsui-do stones you ask? Here is probably more than you wanted to know about water stones and grit.

Here is one from a company in the U.S., SharpeningSupplies.com, that I have been using for years whenever I need a new toaster. Kidding, as the name implies, they sell sharpening supplies.

And here is yet another look at the general polishing process.

Next week, exciting progress with the kaiseido stone!

Cigar of the Week

061624 rhomboid 300 hands scaled.jpg

This week our pal rhomboid scores with this excellent review of the Southern Draw 300 Hands

There's a truism in the cigar industry that each handmade cigar reaching the consumer has been touched by 300 hands. From harvest of the leaf, to curing, fermentation, aging, selection, cutting and rolling, every step is labor-intensive. Southern Draw launched the 300 Hands line over five years ago with the intention of bringing the stories of Nicaraguan cigar workers to the consumer, and donating 25% of profits from the line to worthy causes benefiting these workers and their families. Each pack comes with a card telling the story of a Nicaraguan cigar industry worker.

There are 3 blends in the line - habano, maduro, and the one reviewed here, Connecticut. It has a US Connecticut wrapper over a Peruvian binder, with Nicaraguan and Dominican filler. For me this one offers a fairly standard Connecticut experience - mild body, notes of light wood and hay. No real sweetness or baking spices as with many Connecticuts, but also no bitterness. Construction is good, burn line needed only a little touching up. A good basic Connecticut in the value category, something to burn at the driving (or when possible, shooting) range, on the golf course, or around the yard. Available online from just under $4 and up.

Excellent, rhomboid! Thank you!

******

Here are some different online cigar vendors. You will find they not only carry different brands and different lines from those brands, but also varying selections of vitolas (sizes/shapes) of given lines. It's good to have options, especially if you're looking for a specific cigar.

Famous-smoke.com

A note about sources. The brick & mortar/online divide exists with cigars, as with guns, and most consumer products, with respect to price. As with guns - since both are "persecuted industries", basically - I make a conscious effort to source at least some of my cigars from my local store(s). It's a small thing, but the brick & mortar segment for both guns and tobacco are precious, and worth supporting where you can. And if you're lucky enough to have a good cigar store/lounge available, they're often a good social event with many dangerous people of the sort who own scary gunz, or read smart military blogs like this one. -rhomboid

Anyone have others to include? Perhaps a small local roller who makes a cigar you like? Send me your recommendation and a link to the site!

5 Didn't get to range, but did partially clean my 1911 as the slide lock function. So took the grip parts all apart and put it back together. It was a buggy to get apart, will do it again soon and oil it this time. Mabe take the slide apart next time.

Question, can the bluing be touched up?

12 Hello, Weasel! No range time this week. I went to the Chantilly show on Friday and Saturday. The shows in the summer months are usually slower than the ones in the winter months, and this one was no exception. I picked up a H&K commemorative edition of the M27 rifle that the USMC made standard issue for Marine infantry. This is probably the closest one can get to a H&K 416. And, like most H&K products, it didn't come cheap.

16 Are you a WeaselDoctrine adherent and focusing on fundamentals?
I did get to the range LAST weekend! And, while I also had a little fun with some new guns at the DMV MGC, one of them taught me my trigger control was CRAP.

Blaster brought his Ace o' Spades .22LR revolver. I discovered myself pushing forward (anticipating) AND not really squeezing as well as I thought I was.

So, with that awareness, I bought myself a Heritage Rough Rider .22 revolver this week. (It has the flag on it, instead of blaster's AoS design.) I intend to spend a LOT of time working fundamentals with that gun, until I can confidently say I'm paying attention consistently to those fundamentals.

I might buy a .22 semi in the near future, as well. But, first, we'll work just the trigger stuff with the revolver.

Oh, and a shoutout to the DMV MGC: THANK YOU for inviting me and letting me shoot with you. It's always a pleasure, and I do get something out of it besides all the great camaraderie.

27 Some team mates went to Staccato Ranch on Friday. It's in Florence, TX. Heard it was an awesome place to shoot and you can join now for only $300/month and the initiation fee is waved. 😱
Still too rich for my blood plus it's an hour and a half away with no traffic.
They had an "experience" which included all the ammo and they got to shoot everything made by Staccato including guns and ammo not available to the general public yet. Plus ammo was included. Since there were 3 kids from the team they said they shot over a 1000 rounds. They were very hesitant to have the kids on the property at first They weren't hesitant when the kids were done That seems to happen a lot with the kids. When they go to adults steel challenges the people always think that the kids are gonna hold up everything when in fact, the kids are usually being held up by the teams before them.

45 My BIL made a black powder cannon. Long ago. He still has it. Machined stainless steel, maybe 50 cal, maybe larger. What I recall is that we used a 35mm plastic film canister to load the powder, and a bunch of face tissue packed tight to the powder charge. Like a whole film canister tightly packed.

No projectile.

A fuse like on an M80 or cherry bomb. And BOOM! Huge report and a cloud of smoke, the cannon knocked back a couple feet on its carriage.

I see them for sale on line, cannons in 50 cal bore that look about like what we fired back in the day, as they say.

But I don't own one.

Am thinking about a golf ball mortar, though. Anybody have anything to report on those?

Supposedly yes (called "cold bluing"), but it's not really meant to make a vintage firearm with bluing from 100 years ago look like new again. It's supposed to work better on post-WWII bluing which is much darker and more blackish than the pre-WWII finishes. It may not last that long depending on your treatment/use of the firearm. YMMV.

55 I took my P320 to the range Friday to zero. AGAIN.

Not sure why but this particular pistol does not agree with me so much. I can shoot it, but not really consistently. Oddly, I can shoot sra blaster's p320 well. I am not sure if the Wilson Combat grip module is working against me or not.

I took a Caldwell pistol bench rest and used a printed "infinte zero" target and zeroed it, umm, infinitely. It is a VERY good zero from the bench rest.

But freestanding, not so much.

The kick is not to be ignored, so I have to concentrate really hard on pulling straight back, smoothly and grip solid. I have to keep my shoulders down and wrist locked. After several rounds, focusing ONLY on trigger pull, my Ronin is a cakewalk. Whenever I find myself wanting to flinch, I can pull up the muscle memory of the hard, long pull of the revolver and I can usually make the flinch go away.

70 On the way back from Ft. Bragg this week, I stopped at the farm for a few days and got in some range time. I concentrated mainly on a consistent trigger press and trying to maintain a consistently solid grip with my support hand. Danged arthritis in the hand makes that a problem for me.

The frangible I got for a really good price - Southern Defense had Norma MLE 94 grain frangible for 22.5c a round which is about half what I paid for the last frangible I got which was Remington 100 grain even with the $50 shipping.

I said FMJ but actually its a polymer (Hi-Tek) coated reman from Southern Munitions (which is different from Southern Defense) and it was $177 for 2 cases of 500 but 80 shipping and tax. The brass looks brand new and the stamps all match so I can't tell its reman.

Nice. The DMV home range partners with an upscale range down the road. 2-3x the monthly charges for membership there.

I can see why they do it though - the facility is nicer though not 2-3x nicer. It's too keep out the riff-raff (like us because we go to the cheaper one). Our home range is seeing lots more shooters and that leads to wait times and other crowding issues.

85 I did the freezer bag trick too. I was told to use the purple simple green at 1 pt simple green and 3 parts water. Other people on the team said that the green simple green is too strong for the polymer guns. All I know is after taking the gun out and rinsing it well, I used an air compressor to make sure it was completely dry then sprayed it with the Breakthrough all in one and wiped it down. There wasn't any black on the white cloth. That usually only happens with brand new guns.

Visited the folks a couple weeks ago and Dad gave me his dad's S&W 38. It was from Granddads in the local mounted police.

Side of the 6-1/2" barrel reads, "S&W Special US Service CTG'S".

He brought 3 friends out this week and they invited me to shoot with them . All ex Marines. Those young men could shoot. The 250 yard target is an 8 inch piece of steel. 101 Skip, oxopho blue from Brownells or Amazon is one of the better cold blues.

Cold blueing is actually staining the steel rather than inducing a rust cycle. Birchwood has a kind of sulfur stink, oxopho has little odor as it is based on selenium. Neither work well if you have applied silicone product to the surfaces in the past as then you get swirls if color reminiscent of case hardening.

Best applied to ordinary carbon steel and cold blue can be unpredictable with alloys.

Apply exactly as label says and a quick heating with a hair dryer or heatgun of surface can help process.

Do you have any .38 Special snap caps? They're the easiest way to determine if the revolver is chambered in .38 Special. The fact that the revolver is marked as a "S&W Special" indicates that the revolver is indeed chambered in .38 Special. .38 Special was introduced in 1898. So it's definitely possible that a 1905 revolver was chambered in .38 Special.

Take a look at my gun thread submission from a few months back about my S&W Model 1899. See what similarities and differences there are between your example and mine. My example is chambered in .38 S&W, a shorter and less powerful ancestor of .38 Special.

106 Rhomboid and nurse have good practice for trigger work. Double action revolvers require full follow through with no catching the link or other tricks in order to reset.

A caveat though is that in double action, rimfire revolvers have stiffer trigger pulls than center-fire cartridges.

I included a couple of vids a month or so ago on mobs surrounding cars and how situational awareness is key. Don't go to places where bad people congregate. Keep your head on a swivel at all times. Always have an escape route, and if anything looks bad, head in the opposite direction.

Posted by: nurse ratched at June 16, 2024 08:13 PM (TLhHb)

Remember that your pistol is to either escape the situation or to get to a bigger gun. It's fortunate that in most encounters, "escaping the situation" can be done by shooting one guy a few times (or even just showing him your gun). But the option to "didi mao" - get out of there - should always be part of your analysis of the situation.

Posted by: GWB at June 16, 2024 08:17 PM (AWrpC)

120 Gwb, stick with plastic snap caps for rimfire revolvers. The metal ones deform too quick. In a pinch, you can use plastic wall anchors, either a #6 or 8, I forget, as ersatz 22 rimfire snap caps. The Tipton's though last a pretty long time.

The reason most rimfire firearms don't allow dryfiring without them is you risk chipping the case hardened rimfire hammer tip or you burr the outside of the softer barrel metal at the mouth of the chamber making loading and extraction difficult.

Posted by: whig at June 16, 2024 08:18 PM (/0X3E)

121 BTW, that is not advice to not carry. It’s advice to not be in a situation where your carry will be outnumbered.

From my copy of "Battles and Leaders of the Civil War, Vol. 3," it appears that the 142nd PA had a bit of a rough time on the first day. Their brigade CO was wounded. The regiment's CO was killed, and they probably were roughly handled in the final Southern attacks on the first day. Because of that, they almost certainly spent the rest of the battle in reserve.

146 As the topic comes up frequently, I have not been able to find large rifle primers for sale ANYWHERE. Midway, Midsouth, Natchez, Cabela's, and any other sites I could think of. Got tired of seeing 'out of stock' under each item. Other sizes of primers are in stock, just not LRP.

If you are a reloader and need certain components, jump on them when available. Same with powders.

Or learn to appreciate flintlocks.

.38 Long Colt was indeed the standard US military service handgun cartridge at the time. But because .38 Long Colt used a "straight through" boring for the cylinder (see my post about the Model 1901 New Model Army revolver), and didn't have "shoulders" like modern revolver cylinders have today, it could also chamber .38 S&W, .38 Special, and .357 Magnum. .357 Magnum pressures will destroy any .38 Long Colt revolver in one shot, so DON'T load .357 into any .38 Long Colt revolver.

Look down the cylinder from the rear. The "shoulders" should be visible as a circle in the chamber. If you can't see them, try loading a .357 Magnum snap cap in the cylinder. If the "shoulder" is there, you should not be able to close the cylinder when you try to load it with .357 Magnums.

1. Before you go, see the Turner Gettysburg miniseries. Really helps you get the timeline.

151 Another caution. 22LR ammo is plentiful right now. (The prices hurt but that's me and sticker shock.) But in previous shortages even 22 ammo was hard to find. I probably over bought after that last shortage but 22lr ammo never goes to waste.

The Civil War comments made me wonder why repeating rifles weren't more widely used, as the Spencer had already been designed in 1860. The answer seems to be bureaucratic resistance, a lack of tactics and fears that the logistical train would be overwhelmed by the additional ammunition.

During one of my visits to Gettysburg, I joined up with a park ranger for a walk across the battlefield from Seminary Ridge to the Emmitsburg Road in the footsteps of one of Pickett's brigades. It's a long walk in the open, completely exposed to the Union artillery on Cemetery Ridge and the Round Tops. With the massed infantry formations of the day, the Union artillery couldn't have missed even if they tried. After walking up to the Emmitsburg Road and back again, I think it's incredible that many of Pickett's men survived coming through all of that. If you fast forwarded to WWI w/ rapid fire howitzers and heavy MGs, no one would have survived that attack.

164 OK, disassembly guy is pretty good. Not a bad voice. (Though, if it were an academic class, I would probably be snoozing.)

Only thing I would add is how to do an ambidextrous safety. It is a little tougher, as you have to fit both sides together as you push it in. But it's not bad.

Having proper tools really does help, but in this case, aside from the hammer, a Leatherman or similar tool can actually be used. (And, yes, you can use the Leatherman as a hammer, too; though I would cover it with something like a piece of leather so as not to mar things.)

I do carry to Mass. I also carry to the art walk and the farmers market and to the grocery store. But when I'm out on the beach I do not. Something about sand and guns. It's hard to cc in shorts and a tshirt and off body doesn't seem safe either.

And I am not allowed to have a weapon on campus. My walk from the waterfront to work can be dangerous. Back down the hill, not as bad since I'm usually with a couple other folks. And we know where the problem areas are and avoid them. I've also made the girls jaywalk with me to avoid persons on the sidewalk. I've given many of them pepper spray and lecture them on situational awareness.

The M1903 Springfield bolt action rifle has a magazine cutoff lever, which converts the rifle to a singleshot, for this reason. Considering that, at that time, ammunition could only be moved from a rail car to the front line by horse drawn wagons, it was a good idea.

181 Posted by: Hadrian the Seventh at June 16, 2024 08:45 PM (MoZTd)

There were two big reasons: 1) Cost and 2) range. A Henry rifle cost about $40 new. An M1863 Springfield cost about $15. In addition, the copper cartridges required cost significantly more than the Minie balls and paper cartridges needed for the Springfield. The Henry had a relatively short effective range of about 150 yards. An M1863 Springfield could reach out to around 400 yards if fired in volleys. Keep in mind that reloading the Henry had to be done via a slot in the magazine tube at the front of the rifle. Nelson King's side loading slot in the receiver didn't appear until 1866.

Also, keep in mind that the capability to mass produce repeaters on a scale to equip the whole Union army didn't exist. Oliver Winchester had problems filling the orders he had. The Spencer was more numerous, but even it didn't get produced in the volumes required to equip every solider wearing blue. No matter what happened, muzzle loaders would have been part of the armament Billy Yank carried into battle even in 1865.

209 BTW, the Rough Rider is not a swing-out cylinder. It's a gate loader (and single-action only).

So, they give you instructions on how to use the standard-now-comes-with-every-gun gun lock. You know the one - the longish cable lock? You have to take the cylinder all the way out, run the cable through the cylinder, then through the barrel, then latch the lock behind the cylinder.

Seems to me you could just put it through the barrel once the cylinder is out and safe the weapon perfectly fine. I guess you do both so you don't lose the cylinder when it's locked up.

219 Seems to me you could just put it through the barrel once the cylinder is out and safe the weapon perfectly fine.

Sometimes you gotta wonder who is more creative, the engineers or the lawyers.

220 Once in a very long while a person is called to do something with a gun you would rather not do. Zocks was put to rest with a case of lead poisoning. His spirit wasn't ready but his body was.

The job of "test engineer" is a crazy combination of those things. I spend a lot of time saying, "Look, if I thought of it, so will a user. Listen to me when I say 'protect against this.'"

224 .22 LR being the foundation of my Ammo Pyramid, I've recently added a 3250 ct. case of Federal Auto Match 40 gr. to the pile.

$205 on Ammoman.

And, yes. Double Action Revolver dry fire has always been, and shall always be, the Breakfast of Champions.

225 Now, on to the range report: Shot my fourth 1,000 yard match yesterday and, shockingly, did much better than the previous match. Managed to score 84 out of 100 possible points. (10 rounds, 3 sighters) I also got an X ring, which was nice.

Funny side note, I was shooting ammo that was a bit hotter than what I'd been using previously and I didn't believe the elevation data from my ballistics program. It was 4.5 MOA less than the loads I was using prior to yesterday. Naturally, I put one high, about 24" dead center.

Overall, I made progress and believe I might be able to compete with the equipment I have.

229 Blaster, sorry, got called away.

Savage Axis II Precision 30.06. 178 Grain Hornady ELD M @ 2780 FPS (don't remember the muzzle brake manufacturer)

Topped with a Vortex Viper HD 5-25X50 FFP

If I do my part, I can get around .5 MOA out of the rifle.
