The Federal Government to become efficient? Time will tell.

U.S. travelers can now renew their passport online under a pilot program the U.S. Department of State launched on Thursday.

The State Department's new online system will allow U.S. passport holders to start a renewal application for a short window of time every day, closing once the system has reached a designated number of new applications, officials said in a statement. The agency is preparing a full launch of the renewal system at some point after testing, but didn't provide an exact date.

31 I saw one of those "comfort mysteries" at the thrift shop today. It was called Riesling and Revenge by Daisy Linh

It is one of a series of wine oriented mysteries all set in wine country, and I suspect they are all very much like each other and probably have a discussion of wine or recipes, or maybe cats as an excursion from the plots. I would probably prefer to read a couple of them over nailing my ears to a door, but I am sure I would have some longful thoughts about the pneumatic nail gun while struggling through them.

50 A glimpse into the mind of an AWFL (affluent white female liberal).

There was a discussion on Portland Reddit about which of Portland's three suburban counties had the best county fair (they all have lots of farms and extensive rural areas, so you have 4-H competitions and the rest of traditional country fair activities).

One AWFL chimed in.

Judging from her other Reddit comments, she lives in an expensive house in Portland, owns an electric car (of course), but refuses to own a Tesla for political reasons (of course). She has a young daughter.

She'd like to take her daughter to one of the suburban county fairs, but there is one problem:

I’ve never been to any of the local fairs, in part having to basis of expectation — especially as it comes to how much unexpected conservative stuff I would have to explain to my daughter. Really wish that crowd could keep political statements out of everything, a county fair shouldn’t be a place to grandstand political ideology.

How DARE Republicans politick at the county fair in an election year? (The three counties all run 40-50% Republican.)

Don't they realize there are children present???

54 There was a watering hole in Youngstown back in the day where they passed out drink tokens if someone bought the house a round. It was nothing to have 4-5 of them on your person at any one time.

It also was nothing to see a number of the wives' of the mill rats come in and drag their good for nothing husbands out of there before they drank up their entire paycheck.

Good times, good times.

55 Quicksand story is typical. As hazards go, it is more annoyance than hazard. I stepped in a pool of it on the beach in Nicaragua. Went in maybe knee-deep, and got out of it without breaking a sweat. Similar situation, too. A little stream entered the ocean nearby, and as the tide came in, fresh water saturating the sand was being replaced by seawater welling up beneath it, so the quicksand was like a lazy spring.

I left a fifth of bourbon under the front seat of my car in the summer several years back. It was the brand that still used a cork instead of a screw top, Unfortunately the vapor pressure drove the cork out and it spewed all over the driver's side. You do see Trump flags in the Portland burbs and especially in rural areas near Portland.

Rarely see bumper stickers though - I think the idea is to maintain deniability if you ever have to go into Portland for some reason.

However, it's a manual transmission, and there is no such thing as level ground around here, and I always park at pull-through spaces, so no problem doing a bump start.

Popped the hood when I got home, checked battery voltage. It was okay, not great, but ok, 12.2 V. Clipped the meter onto the battery clamps, tried the starter, blip, voltage at clamps dropped to 2.2 V. Reconnected the meter to the battery terminals, tried to crank, voltage held at 12.2 V.

I did destroy one once. When I were a lad and my mom was teaching me how to drive we went to H-E-B to pick up some things for Thanksgiving. Being that it was so busy we had to park in the very back. Was pulling into a spot with a cart that was left right there. It's fine. But instead of pressing the brake I pressed the gas and proceeded to destroy the fuck out of that cart. Flattened it good. Mom's Suburban was fine.

As for any other details? Hey, what happened? Cart was like that when we got here.

This weather station is a lot of fun. Had an interesting little local "heat bloom" effect around 11PM tonight. It was entirely local, none of the nearby stations saw it.

I was steadily cooling down, got down to below 76F around 10:45PM. Then it turned up, peaked at 79F about 11:30, then cooled back down.

None of the nearby stations saw that, just steady cooling. I had cooled down a bit below them, faster. That little bloom here just averaged it out. There was a little burst of wind during that bloom. That was mixing of some sort. The others didn't see any wind like that either.

But I'm with my peeps, the ones who will vote for the first time for a Republican -- and a convicted felon to boot -- for president. In Detroit. In the South Bronx. Soon to be maybe Fulton County. I'm sure there will be alcohol-related deaths due to liver failure among many Dems (looking at James Carville) and media people (Rachel Maddow) by the time this election is over. I also expect lots and lots of riots. We'll have both the Paleo legal immigrants and their useful idiot Hamas supporters angry because that's what they do and the millions of illegals we'll be trying to deport who are currently raising hell. The People's response to those anticipated riots will be the interesting angle to all this.

246 Another stabbing in Germany by an " Afghan national ". They don't dare use the word immigrant. German politicians are at the same level of stupid as ours.

the German government is proposing the establishment of ‘knife-free zones’ in cities across the country. “We should think about banning knives on public transport, on buses and trains,” Germany’s Interior Minister Nancy Faeser declared.

Fraser is also very vocal about Germany being a welcoming place for all these oppressed, poor souls.

250 True Story - no wait, that sounds like FJB... This happened to me 3 weeks ago on a visit to Kauai. My wife and I visited the beach where they filmed the beginning to Gilligan's Island. As we crossed the small inlet between the ocean and lagoon, I stepped into quicksand and sunk knee deep in an instant. I pulled my leg out, minus my new sandal and quickly retreated to firmer sand. Not wanting to be without said new sandal, I gingerly (pun intended) made my way back and fished it out.

255 From a standpoint of winning the Presidency, there's only one VP choice for Trump that makes any sense:

J.D. Vance

Love him or hate him, Vance brings a dowry to Trump that nobody else can match: POSSIBLE help with white working class voters in MI, WI & PA. If Trump can't carry ONE of those three states, Trump loses.

The DEMs are fully aware of what Vance could bring to the table, & they dread it.

264 My suggestion for a Gettysburg trip is to get a licensed Battlefield guide. Sure, it will probably set you back about 100 bucks when you take tip into account, but you basically have an expert on the battlefield for several hours. It is a huge battlefield and these people are at the level of PhD’s when it comes to Gettysburg and the Civil War.

They know how to tailor the experience to families with kids, people from the north, or south, whatever your interest. Considering the small fee, that is a lot better than the average guy badly paraphrasing the movie Gettysburg or Ken Burns.

265 Biden and other Democrats say awful stuff all the time. The differences, the precious isn’t out to get them. I don’t care what Trump said about Milwaukee and no one else should in my opinion. It is not as if the place has built a cult, following of people who just love It and want to move there.

It’s a shame, but the press will take any thing Trump says or may have said and blow it up to harm him. They’re actively trying to stop him. They could be lying about this, but at least to me that’s not the point. If we start to pretend Milwaukee is a great place that people want to move to from across the country to raise their family then we’re a bit full of it too.

Posted by: Quint at June 16, 2024 02:17 AM (RAUB3)

266 YAY, Debby! So glad you found your wedding ring!!! (and hope my 'tip' helped find it!)

Sure I'd love to meet Jewells, we both love beads n stuff...

Posted by: JQ at June 16, 2024 02:17 AM (njWTi)

267 What I also find fascinating about Trump's third campaign is the response from people, minorities, lefties, just plain people, fed up with the Dems overall, not just Biden as a singular particular. I honestly don't think, at this point (what difference does it make?), they can swap out Joey because the Dems' problem is not just him -- it's THEM. All of them. No one wants Kamalalaladingdong as the candidate. She was an impeachment/25th Amendment insurance policy that is now no longer needed. Gruesome Newsom? Not a chance for that pretty boy, not after the destruction of California is laid at his feet. The Dems have no far left/progressive bench, none with any popular appeal. Can't think of a moderate Dem anyway. (Does such a creature exist?) But I just get the sense that this Trump populist juggernaut happens with or without Biden as his opponent. That's why I find the Dems'/media's panicked response this go around so entertaining.

Posted by: JQ at June 16, 2024 02:26 AM (njWTi)

269 Hubby has a weak (or, unpredictable at best) bladder. And, he's unable to read quickly or decide quickly...

For example, rest area coming up-- there's usually only a mile or two advance notice-- so, I ask him if he 'needs to go' and he replies "no, I can do without it."

OK, so I'm driving past the turnoff. He sees the blue sign (recognizes "rest area") and hollers at me: "Turn here! Rest area!"

Me: "But you said..."

Him, screaming: "I gotta go!"

Me: "There will be another, soon."

Luckily, we arrived home about half hour later. He'd forgotten all about shrieking at me.

*shrug*

275 My suggestion for a Gettysburg trip is to get a licensed Battlefield guide.

Concur. The scale and complexity of the battle is breathtaking. When I visited the battlefield I knew enough to be my own guide - without that I would have been lost.

One memory of my visit is I walked the path of Pickett's Charge. I gained a deeper appreciation of the incredible cohesion and bravery of the Southern troops as the advanced under withering artillery. That any of them made it the Bloody Angle before being repelled is both inspiring and terrifying.

The desperate Little Round Top slugfest is best understood by wandering amongst the unit location markers; up close and personal killing to place there and if the Southern attack was not stopped by Chamberlain's men they would hit the Union left flank end on and would have rolled it up. The thinnest of margins saved the Union position from collapse that day.

277 My first trip to Gettysburg was around 4 to 5 (1960 or so). I remember the gift shop having for sale two Minié balls which collided in mid-air in the heat and fury of the battle; looking back, one of those 'wish I could have now' items. Anyway, Gettysburg was about an hour away on local roads from a great-uncle's farm in Western Maryland. Went there again aged around 10 to 13. I was much more aware that time, but nowhere near as aware as the adult me. Problem now, though, I probably couldn't walk the battlefield due to heath reasons, and I've walked more than just Gettysburg, including Revolutionary War, battlefields in my youth.

The problem with Age: The more you know, the less you can do.

Our family lives by them and won't be abandoning them any time soon.

There's an old brick pre-Revolutionary war church in Norfolk, St,. Paul's Church, which still has embedded up high on a wall a British cannonball from the bombardment of 1775, if my faulty memory is still firing. Grew up with that. Then later, MacArthur decided the proper place for his mausoleum/museum to himself was Norfolk, right near St. Paul's; MacArthur had a connection to Norfolk as a young boy. Then Yorktown and Williamsburg close as well. And when I was very young Williamsburg was barely 'a thing'. The visitor Center didn't even exist yet. Been down to northeast Carolina, to Manteo on Roanoke Island, and seen 'The Lost Colony' play about 6 or so times. Fun stuff here on the east coast, JQ.
