The Fast and the Furry-ous Cafe

ranirotorrentselchalten.jpg
El Chaltén, Patagonia
by @RamiroTorrents

People have turned their home into a racing track for cats.

Time-lapse video of the Milky Way moving across the night sky.

A guy's ceiling totally collapses from carrying too much weight. Engineers call this a
Jonah Goldberg Jazzercise Event.

You can call this guy a slacker, but what a life he's leading.

This dog loves horse races. Sound on. Hilarious.

Big, big fan blade.

Mama bison and calf cross the road. Looks like they meet dad on the other side.

And a moose family crossing the road.

Positano, Italy.

Jumping into Friday night like...

Sundown flight.

Guy parodies modern "art" installations.

A nice cave. Whoops, sorry, I meant an ice cave.

Say, do you all know that the word for umpire was originally "numpire"? And the word got changed over confusion whether people were saying "a numpire" or "an umpire."

The word "orange" similarly got changed due to incorrect parsing of the "a" and "n." The Spanish for orange is naranja, and English speakers weren't sure if the word was "a naranja" or "an oranja." We wrongly interpreted it as the latter.

A crystal-clear lake in Lofoten, Norway.

Jet-skiing on a perfectly smooth and mirror-like lake. Or maybe it's just CGI. I tell you, CGI and AI are the bane of the Cafe. I never know what's real any longer.

This is a real king fisher, and boy howdy.

Wheeee...!

Drone flight over rocky sea cliffs (with some sea stacks peppered in for diversity reasons).

Animals yawning. Bonus: a marmot (?) yawning. The involuntary extension of the jaw to its most open position is called the David French Reflex.

Sound on:

Diving into the weekend like....

60 The contemporary economy of eastern Patagonia revolves around sheep farming and oil and gas extraction, while in western Patagonia fishing, salmon aquaculture, and tourism dominate.

Etymology and toponomies
The name Patagonia comes from the word patagón.[7] Magellan used this term in 1520 to describe the native tribes of the region, whom his expedition thought to be giants. The people he called the Patagons are now believed to have been the Tehuelche, who tended to be taller than Europeans of the time.[8][9] Argentine researcher Miguel Doura observed that the name Patagonia possibly derives from the ancient Greek region of modern Turkey called Paphlagonia, possible home of the patagon personage in the chivalric romances Primaleon printed in 1512, ten years before Magellan arrived in these southern lands. This hypothesis was published in a 2011 New Review of Spanish Philology report.[10]

66 Thought Ace was making it up, but the Online Etymology Dictionary tells it this way.

umpire (n.)
mid-14c., noumper, from Old French nonper "odd number, not even," in reference to a third person to arbitrate between two, from non "not" (see non-) + per "equal," from Latin par "equal" (see par (n.)). Initial -n- lost by mid-15c. due to faulty separation of a noumpere, heard as an oumpere. Originally legal, the gaming sense first recorded 1714 (in wrestling).

I'll keep this in mind the next time Joe Biden tells the story of when he taught constitutional law at UPenn, that cannibals ate his uncle, that he was a civil rights activist, that he was arrested with Nelson Mandela, or that he had secret service protection as a senator in the '70s.

98 88 The Wikidingdong entry on Orange, however, does have this...

"The word ultimately derives from a Dravidian language – possibly Tamil நாரம் nāram or Telugu నారింజ nāriṃja or Malayalam നാരങ്ങ‌ nāraŋŋa — via Sanskrit नारङ्ग nāraṅgaḥ "orange tree". From there the word entered Persian نارنگ nārang and then Arabic نارنج nāranj.[2] The initial n was lost through rebracketing in Italian and French, though some varieties of Arabic lost the n earlier."

No disagreement on the OIL RULES. Because, it does.

Those "sawtooth" edges though? They're on the trailing edge of the blade, and are there to help reduce the deep bass "thump" that the +/- 200 mph blade tip makes as it passes near to the ground.

Look at the engine nacelles of a Boeing 787 or a 737 Max, and you'll see a similar "sawtooth" pattern cut into the trailing edge of the main fan enclosures.

They really do work on breaking up the "coherency" of the sound waves as those waves "depart" those particular surfaces.

200 The word "orange" similarly got changed due to incorrect parsing of the "a" and "n." The Spanish for orange is naranja, and English speakers weren't sure if the word was "a naranja" or "an oranja." We wrongly interpreted it as the latter.

>>> 88 The Wikidingdong entry on Orange, however, does have this...

Yes, only 2 ways to eat it; stick it in the freezer for an hour, then shatter it on a sturdy countertop. Or, open the package and let it go stale and soft for a day or 2.

230 When we were living in Michigan, we experienced a ceiling collapse in the living room. The previous owner had installed solar panels on the roof and pipes in the attic "for the extra hot water" (in Michigan, go figure). One cold spring, the pipes froze and burst, and down came the ceiling. We were cleaning up insulation throughout the house for weeks.
