Top Story

  • How a single ChatGPT mistake cost us $10,000. (Asim)

The error is actually fairly subtle, but it's another one of those cases where multiple individual bad ideas* combine to create a disaster.

In this case, the account ID for new users was not assigned when the user was created, but in each worker thread when the server was started up.

Nobody saw this during testing because they were restarting the server all the time, and each restart generated a new pool of available user IDs.

But the moment things were working... They stopped working.

    * Interpreted, weakly typed languages, database definitions in generic code, and using fucking ChatGPT, for starters.

Tech News

  • Designing a Lego orrery. (Marian)

Just the Earth-Moon-Sun system, though there's a preliminary idea at the end of doing a simpler version for the entire solar system - just doing planetary orbits and leaving out orbital inclinations, axial tilts, and moons.

Putting all of those features in, building it out of Lego, and keeping it accurate would make it extremely complicated.

    Also, quite large.

  • Over a thousand malicious extension to Microsoft's Visual Studio Code have been discovered with hundreds of millions of total installations worldwide. (Bleeping Computer)

The idea behind Visual Studio Code is that it's a useless piece of garbage but is easy for people to extend.

Which is like selling homes that are just a frame of 2x4s vaguely nailed together, covered with tarps and some exposed drains and wiring.

Cheap. Easy to upgrade. Hilariously unsafe.

  • HP shipped a bad BIOS update that bricked many of its ProBook laptops. (Tom's Hardware)

And of course it was an automatic update, so you'd just wake up one morning, running late for work because your alarm didn't go off, and find that your computer had committed suicide during the night.

Or, worse - since these are business laptops - you work in corporate IT, and you have a hundred dead laptops to deal with all at once, and all that HP is offering is a motherboard replacement that costs nearly as much as a new laptop.

Oh, and the BIOS file HP installed? Wasn't even a BIOS file. But the automated update tried to install it anyway.

I keep telling people to read all of Anna Geifman's books and nobody ever does. 'Death Orders' has absolutely the best explanation of the mentality that leads to that kind of warped upside-down morality. It's one thing to point at something, it's quite another to make an effort to explain it, which she does. She got mad at me (probably inevitable) as I felt she missed a cosmological link between modern Islamic Terror and the actions of Jewish revolutionaries in Tsarist Russia. She didn't like the comparison and got upset.

1. Maybe it's the other way around. I recommend you read several books about the history of Islam and its barbarity, which preceded the 19th century by 100s of years.

2. Why don't you tell us about the numerous Christian terrorists in Tzarist Russia during the same interval?

You just can't help yourself, can you.

24 Some software testing maxims:

1. If the test team says they are good to go because it works in their test environment immediately unplug the test environment for the network. 99.99% of the time bad things will happen. Immediately fire the test team.

2. If the test team says it works great after they reboot the system immediately fire the test team.

3. If the test team says they read the spec and understand the code, make them do a company wide presentation of how it works. Plan on firing the entire test team immediately after the presentation.

4. If the test team says the BIOS update will not fail ask the test team what the to explain how a BIOS update works. Plan on firing the test team.

Testing software is brutal. I am quite glad I don't have to deal with that anymore.

44 G'morning, all.

Reasonable drive from B'More to Charleston yesterday.

B'More to Fredericksburg is usually heavy, even on a Sunday morning. But for whatever the reason, traffic was light, and flowed well.

However...Buc-ee's near Florence SC on I-95 was an absolute goat rope of traffic. I-95 was empty because everyone was at Buc-ee's. Diverted to the Taco Bell for a bathroom break, and must have been 15 people in line for the bathroom there.

But...NoVaMoMe was great, as always, and it's good to be home.

All I need to do this week is mow the lawn, change out motor mounts, rear shocks and mounts, and sway bar drop links for the trip to Virginia Beach next week.

In President Biden’s telling, he was a teenage civil rights activist, a former trucker, the first in his family to go to college and the nephew of a cannibalism victim.

All of these claims stretch the truth or are downright false. But Mr. Biden persists in telling personal tales with rhetorical flourishes and factual liberty when he works a room or regales an audience. They are a way to connect with voters, emphasize his “middle-class Joe” persona and charm his audience.

91 The Suzuki Shelitha was a two door convertible runabout that did poorly in the Asian markets and only lasted for a few years. Marred by poor reliability and an underpowered three cylinder engine it was not considered suitable for European markets, much less the Americas.

A girl isn't gonna capture the heart of a man like Sweet-Dick with just a big ass, and a cum hither smile, you know.

95 V-E Day next year will be something.

As The USA, Canada, the UK, France, and Germany are all being swamped by goblins, orcs, and trolls, let's celebrate that we don't all have to speak German!

Woo hoo! 🎉 🍷 🎸

They tried to revive the Suzuki Shelitha with a blinged-up EV version but it would invariably turn left without signaling when passing hair and nail extension stores.

I'm currently visiting my family in the Rust Belt. My hometown looks like a set from 'The Walking Dead'. Staying with my sister in the country though. Nice out here. Lots of golf courses closing around here. I understand why but it makes me sad. Population changes. Younger folks don't golf much, older population dying out. My favorite golf course is now a 'Solar Farm'. Some energy company from Texas bought it. Others are industrial parks.

101 You know how when you turn the steering wheel of your car the front wheels will move in the direction you want to go? Well, those expectations are antiquated. Now the cars "(SUVs") can decide if they want to go that way too.

102 "Yes and you're a raysis for noticing that."

I thought I was a raysis simply due to my white skin, and lack of dancing skills?

Learn something new every day around here.

It's possibly charming when it's your silly old uncle that you have to endure at family gatherings. Coming from a POTUS, it's disturbing.

And where's that Amy Siskund chick who obsessively tracked EVERY TRUMP LIE now?

107 Well, VIA it's safe to say that if you are white then you doing or not doing anything is a sign of your raysism. Hope that helps.

(And yes, kids; That is exactly how I spell the words because I like mocking people who think that this country is so full of bigotry that everything is raysis.)

110 Thank you for the Solar System video, Pixy. That was really cool to watch.

Good morning everyone.

The Angry Ginger Chicken motorcycle has gotten just over 1,100 mile ridden this weekend. Just 240 more miles today and I'll be back home with Smash and Junior-ette. Really a sweet bike, smoothe as butter, superb throttle response, quick as a skeert cat. 180 horse power at the wheel. Love my Multistrada.

But. It belches heat like a volcano and drinks premium gas like a sailor on 4 days of shore leave in Subic Bay.
