Wednesday Overnight Open Thread (6/12/24) Pre-Flag Day Edition

folded-flag-ceremony-3200.jpg

The Meaning Behind the 13 Folds of Old Glory

What is the Meaning Behind the 13 Folds of the U.S. Flag?
The flag-folding ceremony represents the same religious principles on which the United States was originally founded.

The first fold of our flag is a symbol of life.

The second fold is a symbol of our belief in eternal life.

The third fold is made in honor and remembrance of the veteran departing our ranks, and who gave a portion of his or her life for the defense of our country to attain peace throughout the world.

The fourth fold represents our weaker nature; as American citizens trusting in God, it is Him we turn to in times of peace, as well as in times of war, for His divine guidance.

The fifth fold is a tribute to our country. In the words of Stephen Decatur, "Our country, in dealing with other countries, may she always be right, but it is still our country, right or wrong."

The sixth fold is for where our hearts lie. It is with our heart that we pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.

The seventh fold is a tribute to our armed forces, for it is through the armed forces that we protect our country and our flag against all enemies, whether they be found within or without the boundaries of our republic.

The eighth fold is a tribute to the one who entered into the valley of the shadow of death, that we might see the light of day, and to honor our mother, for whom it flies on Mother's Day.

The ninth fold is a tribute to womanhood. It has been through their faith, love, loyalty and devotion that has molded the character of the men and women who have made this country great.

The 10th fold is a tribute to father, who has also given his sons and daughters for the defense of our country since he or she was first born.

The 11th fold represents the lower portion of the seal of King David and King Solomon and glorifies the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.

The 12th fold represents an emblem of eternity and glorifies God the Father, the Son and Holy Ghost.

The 13th and last fold, when the flag is completely folded, the stars are uppermost, reminding us of our national motto, "In God We Trust."

The Quotes of The Day

Quote I

The upshot of all this is that actual dynamics in human affairs matter more than the grandiose wishes of mega-managers. They can wish for maximum control of everything all they want, but history is taking the world in another direction. Our broken systems for food, medicine, education, commerce will self-reorganize after a period of uncomfortable disorder, perhaps even epic disaster. I hope you see how this works. James Howard Kunstler (H/T Sock Monkey)

Quote II

"I just happened to look outside and I saw one of the ships, so I went outside to investigate. I could see six ships at one time across the horizon. There have been ships in sight most of the day. I was surprised how close they are, we are not that far off shore."
Unidentified passenger on cruise line.

Quote III

“Don’t underestimate Joe Biden’s ability to fuck things up” Former President Barack Hussein Obama, AKA Chocolate Jesus

20 Kunstler is a stuffy Hudson Valley blue nose, but he does have a good turn of phrase. I have one of his books, which I bought for a dollar and may read some day. I don't like listening to him interview (his best one was when he had an interesting guest and a technical issue with his headphones so he didn't actually say anything), but as part of a round table he is insightful.

Posted by: Kindltot at June 12, 2024 10:01 PM (D7oie)

21 I am going to go ahead and call "bullshit" on this.

On Jan. 21, Prieto told the source and an undercover FBI agent acting as an associate of the source at a gun show in Phoenix that he wanted them to help him carry out a mass shooting targeting African Americans at a yet-to-be-determined rap concert in Atlanta, the affidavit says.
Prieto said: “The reason I say Atlanta. Why, why is Georgia such a f------up state now? When I was a kid that was one of the most conservative states in the country. Why is it not now? Because as the crime got worse in L.A., St. Louis, and all these other cities, all the (N-word) moved out of those (places) and moved to Atlanta. That’s why it isn’t so great anymore. And they've been there for a couple, several years.”

22 Smoke on the water?

Posted by: Pug Mahon, with a drawer full of pieces of flair at June 12, 2024 10:01 PM (hZc6Q)

23 He also said that he wanted to target a rap concert because there would be a high concentration of African Americans there and he planned to leave confederate flags after the shooting to send a message that “we’re going to fight back now, and every whitey will be the enemy across the whole country,” and to shout “whities out here killing, what’s we gonna do” and “KKK all the way,” the affidavit says. Prieto said he wanted to show “no mercy, no quarter.”

92 I've told this before.
I have a flag given to me by my boss, the head janitor at Washington State University at the end of my senior year. I had been working a small PT job with him, washing windows and such. I was about to be commissioned into the Army. He was with the 101st in WW2 and was partially disabled with shrapnel still in his leg from Bastogne. My last day of work he said we were going to the roof of the library, highest point on campus. He had me carry a box. We got up there and he went to the flag pole and lowered the State flag and the Colors. We folded them (properly) and replaced them with new flags from the box I had carried. We got back down to his office where he gave me the box. He then saluted and wished me a successful career.
Hell of a guy. I still have those flags and carried them with me on every assignment.

We don't have a democracy. If an atheist, while traveling in other people's neighborhoods, sees a large cross on public land and successfully gets a judge to declare it offensive and must be removed, then that's not the will of the majority which is what a democracy guarantees. In a democracy he'd be told to pound sand at the minimum, tar and feathers would be optimal.
The term democracy does not appear anywhere in The US Constitution or Bill Of Rights.

I know you are not going to feel like it tomorrow, but the worst thing you can do is nothing. Another 12 mile walk might not be it if that is not a usual thing for you. At a minimum, do 15 minutes of stretching. Think pigeon (minute on each side, google if you aren’t familiar with getting into it. If you can’t get flat through your legs, do it backwards by laying on your back, make a figure 4 with legs and gently put pressure on your thigh), a hamstring stretch (send your feet up the ceiling, hip width, flex, and think about pressing up through your heels, seat bone to the floor and hold static), a few cat/cows (exhale on the cat, inhale on the cow), and if you can stomach it, a little plank series and ab work. Epsom salts are your friend.

Before the "you must wear ze seat belt" laws, speed-sensing locks might have made sense, to keep kids from popping the doors open when you're doing 30mph+, and finding out how good your progeny is at the tuck-and-roll.

1967 was a year before the federal law mandating seat belts be installed in every vehicle. Usage laws were obviously even later.

Operating the interior handle usually unlocks the door; at least that's the way it worked for generations. Modern cars with "child-proof" locks are a different matter. More like cop cars, the interior handles don't work if the "child-proof" device is engaged.

The answer is they can't and they do not trust one another enough to agree on a currency to replace it. So it's gold or the dollar or more people getting stiffed by the Chinese refusal to accept the Yuan back they used to pay for something else a month ago. The Saudi's did the oil deal to tweak FJB. It's not policy, and they aren't dumb enough to always do it.

Carry water, lots of water, more water than you can imagine. The Border Patrol checkpoint agents feel confident you are not transporting illegals and wave you through. When off roading riding through sand here you can die or if you are not into drama, you can fall over in a hurry. New Mexicans let their dogs run wild - bring hand grenades. 246 While no one was surprised Manhattan was what it is, the trials in Fulton County, GA are bringing a level of corruption not seen in some time. Besides the Fani Willis and Sweetdick Honeycum, Esq. 'Nights Of Our Lives' soap opera going on, there is another trial where the defense attorney found out about an ex parte meeting between the judge, the prosecution and a witness. When the judge questioned how he knew about the meeting, the defense lawyer refused to say. Eventually, the judge had him held on a contempt of court charge, with the defense lawyer saying to the judge 'I only want to know why I wasn't at that meeting.' Incredibly corrupt. DEI, progressivism, black entitlement, whatever. Seeing this stuff happening to not just Trump only helps Trump. But this type of corruption is so corrosively damaging; when the legal system goes, so goes the Country. And I believe the damage being done to our legal system is deliberate.

247 Congratulations. I know at least a 1/2 dozen people who bought the wrong bike - because the local motorcycle shops just want to up-sell and feed egos.

Years ago I knew a group of older men who rode trail 90's pretty often in the Black Rock Desert. They all had fitted homemade +gas tanks to their bikes.
Posted by: 13times

I grew up riding a 1966 Trial 90 and once those days ended I never touched a bike for, lets see, mumbles something about multiple decades. It was remarkable how quickly everything came back. It was also remarkable how rusty I was some of finer but basic details of riding. I am not going say my not getting whacked by a pick up truck on the way home was a minor miracle. Calling it adjacent would be much, much closer to the truth. After that I spent the day on all the paved secondary road north of town - this being New Mexico I mostly had the place to myself. Everything really came together over the day - a month from now I will be ready to run from the cops.

But of course. Colorado is becoming the land of banned. And just like that Montrose is off my list of places to live. Well, the bill to ban semi automatic firearms had already made that decision for me. The last thing I need is to buy a place and while getting ready to move find out I will be a major felon for simply moving now banned firearms, legally acquired according to the Constitution and applicable laws, to a new home. Thanks for that info. Saw Tony Lo Bianco on Broadway in '83 in Arthur Miller's 'A View From The Bridge'. Good actor.

335 I admit I blew a fucking gasket learning the US SDS had people on the ground in the Killing Fields of Cambodia. Exploded.
Absolutely lost it.

336 I think that Piper lost her ring, but recovered it fairly quickly. I lost my wedding band, the engagement ring was lost many years before that. I looked down at my hand one day and the diamond was gone, setting still there but no diamond. It didn't matter at the time because hubs was still around, and he was still my hubs, a most wonderful man.

That's nothing. Every time the the Admiral Kuznetsov (the sole Russian aircraft carrier ) leaves port, it's accompanied by TWO ocean going tugs. Mainly because most of the time, it gets towed back.

The 74 Trail 90 came with a little half-gallon(?) spare tank that looked like the old desert canteens and was mounted just under that big rear rack. Used to ride out in that big expanse of nothing around Alkali lake, east of Minden.

Re: lost small item on garage floor:

My little trick for this is-- Get a flashlight, turn it on, lay it on the floor. Dim or shut off the overhead light. Scan carefully as you move the flashlight slowly around. Anything on the floor will cast a (relatively) long shadow.

Don't get Mrs. DIG started. We read a book about the Night Strangler Richard Ramirez. Investigators had a unique show print from him that was withheld from the public. The Mayor of San Francisco released that info publicly. Ramirez changed his shoes.

That mayor was....Dianne Feinstein.

I still hear Mrs. DIG bitch about it when her name is mentioned.
