64 I went out walking through streets paved with gold
Lifted some stones, saw the skin and bones
Of a city without a soul
I went out walking under an atomic sky
Where the ground won't turn and the rain it burns
Like the tears when I said goodbye.

Yeah, I went with nothing, nothing but the thought of you.
I went wandering.

105 Never been a fan of Edvard Munch. Most of his work looks like a cartoon but without humor or charm. I can see it fitting in very well with post-WW I Europe. If I want clusters of color I'll look at Van Gogh or Monet.

Don't know what bothers me more: that he produced the paintings or that they were considered so great by the art critics.

148 I get it.

Independent, July 12, 2012, The Night Wanderer, 1923-4, 90cm x 68cm by Edvard Munch
Munch Museum, Oslo

In part, "And so it is here, in this portrait of Munch on his large and isolated estate outside Oslo, 20 years before his death. It is a perfect example of Munch's particular kind of self-haunting. The mood is almost Hitchcockian – we can feel in our bones the disturbingly obsessive, Psycho-like musical accompaniment. He has erupted on to the scene. He peers round at us with his ridiculously garish, yellow hair, hollow-eyed, caught unawares. Colour always meant so much to Munch – as did vowels to Rimbaud. They are indicators of pain."

About the artist: Edvard Munch (1863-1944)
"The Norwegian painter Edvard Munch was the creator of The Scream (1893) one of the most widely disseminated images of the angst of modern man. This image is by no mean atypical. Munch's work exists on some wild, self-tortured outer edge of human existence. Needless to say, he was an alcoholic. Did alcohol nurture the man's psychosis – or did the psychosis cause him to drown his misery in drink?"

Wouldn't hang but thanks.

When you're sitting in the couch with a lover and the cat gets wide eyed and scoots out of the room and you hear something downstairs, but know there's no one there and then you get cold and the hairs on the back of your neck prickle. 271 Did posters know that The Scream was painted on cardboard, basically? A kind of poster board? In some places the "canvas" shows through the painting. Munch didn't give any thought to preserving his art for posterity.

I read an interesting book about the theft, & eventual recovery, of The Scream. My Honda CRV has a better theft protection system than the museum in Norway, where The Scream was on display, had.

The most famous art theft since WW II occurred at the Gardner Museum in Boston a few years back. Never solved. Nothing ever recovered. The Gardner still keeps the blank places where the pictures used to hang on display-- as a reminder of their tragic loss.

I don't have the impression that museums like to spend money on security, because nobody goes to a museum to see state of the art anti-theft devices.

Donors want to see the fruits of their philanthropy right there on the walls, too-- not too much interest in upgrading the professionalism of the security guards.

299 On this day in American, 249 years ago:
June 11-12, 1775– The Battle of Machias (also known as the Battle of the Margaretta) was the first naval engagement of the American Revolutionary War. It took place in and around the port of Machias in what is now eastern Maine and resulted in the capture by Patriot militia of a British schooner. Following the outbreak of the war and the start of the Siege of Boston, British authorities enlisted the assistance of Loyalist merchant Ichabod Jones to assist in the acquisition of needed supplies. Two of Jones’ merchant ships arrived in Machias on June 2, accompanied by the British armed sloop Margaretta, commanded by midshipman James Moore. The townspeople, unhappy with Jones’ business practices, decided to arrest him, and in the attempt, decided to go after Moore and his ship. Moore was able to escape out of the harbor, but the townspeople seized one of Jones’ ships, armed it and a second local ship, and sailed out to meet him. In a short confrontation, they captured Moore’s vessel and crew, fatally wounding him in the process.
There is a very well done oil painting of the battle painted by Robert L. Lambdin, Unity vs The HMS Margaretta, 12 Ju

I don't think that's a good reading of her character in that film.

But even if it is, she chose punishment rather than her own fun. If her husband didn't make her happy, she chose to stay with him because it was her duty. Marriage is hard and requires sacrifice, often of things we want to do. She chose to punish herself because she had tasted what she wanted.

So, even in the worst reading, she's essentially trying to make up for it by punishing herself.

But that doesn't match the rest of the film where she (and her adult children in the flashforwards) talk about how much she loved them and her husband.

Doesn't answer my rhetorical question and punishment for her is denial of passion not discovery and external punishment. But, unlike historical fiction like Madame Bovary, Anna Karenina, etc. she pays no real price so the book/movie is simply a shallow take that indicates 'shit happens' and it is best to lie and deceive.

Eastwood is a talented director but that is the sugar coating of the 'shit' message.

Simply put, Bridges trivializes sexual infidelity and their corrosive effect on marriages and family. It also indicates a fantasy where a woman with poor impulse control gets the affair to yearn over and then her family too.

There is a real question there that Bridges ignores in favor of trite mommy pron.

Essentially, some great art was and is produced by unsavory people. Munch is an example--he brilliantly portrays above that mixes up the human values of misery, solitude, and substance abuse. That being said, how does that affirm the good things in life because even Munch in his self imposed misery must have had happy times on occasion.

Does Munch's painting serve as a warning? As in, "Don't do what I did because it will bring you hell on Earth?" Does creativity require misery? Etc.
