First-World Problems...

Okay, maybe this isn't a problem. That's an early generation LED light that I installed almost 10 years ago. And lest you think that it is in some out-of-the-way place in the house...nope! It's in the kitchen, and those lights are on for most of the day. 16-18 hours!

That light has probably been on for 50,000 hours, and amazingly it didn't stop working; it just got dim enough to be noticeable.

And yes, I date those lights, because I am a geek, and I also find it interesting to see how pathetically inaccurate the promised useful life is for these things. I have had LEDs fail after a few hundred hours! And damned straight I got warranty replacements!

I know that most of us (I am included in that generalization) got pissy when the government demanded that we stop using incandescent lighting. Screw you...I'll do what I want. So I now have several boxes of incandescent bulbs that I will probably never use, because the market caught up with government diktat, and modern LEDs are excellent. Maybe not perfect for all applications, but I am pleased with them.

So...harrumph!

11 The spectrum of light they produce is still not as warm as an incandescent. True, they make different varieties, including "natural" and "warm", and they've made a lot of progress, but there is still a difference.

Also, I find that some people, okay me, will leave a light on longer when it's an LED, just because I know it uses a lot less power. Bad me!

CBD, we must be related. Before the closure of GE's Philadelphia facility, I went to W'mart, Home Depot, Big Lots, lamp and lighting stores, and anyplace else that sold light bulbs and bought cases of different wattages - some 3-way (50-100-150, 100-150-250, etc) and others of only one wattage (usually 150 - 200). I have enough incans to last until the day I die and I will NEVER have a fluor unit in any of my light fixtures. Screw them and the horse they rode in on ...

28 This house has a whole bunch of lighting outside; wall sconces, over head on the patio, spot lights around the patio and upper room, as well as wall lights around the upstairs room. That doesn't count the 3 or 4 lights in each bathroom or the hallway lights and finally the general kitchen lighting.
I replaced all of them with LEDs because while some were incandescent many of them were CFLs which are unsafe due to mercury if they break as well as possibly catching fire for no particular reason.

33 I bought these grow light bulbs for my Emerald Beauty. I bought more for myself. They pull 9w and say they are equivalent to a 100w incandescent bulb. I doubt that but they do put out ample and warm light.

I'm a big fan of led's - love the ones in the kitchen. An array of six lights over the L shaped counters. Before, the heat from incandescents would annoy me. Not now.

Six bulbs at 10 watts vs six at 50 watts - 60 watts vs 300.

Sure they cost more initially but in my experience I've never had one die. I suppose break even point is around three years as a wild eyed guess.

Any location where lights are left on a lot are where you want them. Not in a closet that you hardly ever turn the light on for.

IIRC, at least some warmer LED bulbs rely on a phosphor coating on the bulb. Others use a variety of RGB LEDs with some more complex control circuitry.

The cheap, colored, plastic "bulbs" over the LEDs on Xmas lights just provide color.

37 Sometimes when I know I won't be home until late, I'll leave the bedroom light on all day so I won't have to go up dark stairs. Today's LED bulbs use 11 watts, so it's pretty much what used to be a night light.
Back in the old days of 60 and 75 watt incandescents I would never dream of wasting so much money on electricity.

I did this because we had previously had a fiasco with replacing the lights on a single street, and wound up with blazing bright lights suitable for an NFL night game.

Now I run 4 100w LED and a 1500 watt heater. Some savings there I tell you.
The heat generated by those bulbs is what I miss.

What pissed me off about the diktat to end selling of incandescent bulbs was not the ending, per se, but that the replacement was those mofo-ing corkscrew fluorescent bulbs and that General Electric was right there at that trough, maw wide open, and reaping all the benefits.

Yesterday, I wanted to record the overture to Verdi's La forza del destino (a great title: our Mr. Ali's show name was Ch. Soyara's The Force of Destiny). Type "La forza del destino overture" in the search box. Up come over 400 results. Except the first 200 are recordings by distinguished ensembles like the Plovdiv Philharmonic, conducted by God knows who. It's only after much digging that I found a Claudio Abbado recording that would work (Karajan was too smooth and I had too many Verdi pieces by Muti and Levine).

But yeah, for some reason the Menards lights don't have the sudden death syndrome. Must be some known quality control issue, or just good factories and slothful factories.

We need some Consumer Reports type mag or website that compares China goods to Vietnam goods, or something more specific ... for items like this.

Yesterday I performed the annual maintenance on our water heater, specifically, testing the temperature/pressure relief valve, replacing the sacrificial anode (which, given the water here in SD, definitely needed it), and flushing the sediment from the bottom of the water heater.

I've read that water heaters typically last ~ 10 years, but owing to this routine maintenance, ours has lasted 19 years, and seems to be going strong.

And yes, like CBD, I use a Sharpie to write the date of the maintenance on the water heater every time. So if you're a nerd, CBD, meet another one!

Because of how our eyes work in a dark area a small amount of lumens is seen as bright. I used 1w LED bulbs in all the outside wall sconces (26 IIRC). There are no street lights. The lights look bright and yellowish (warm) and light the patio nicely at night.

They have a lifetime, and that lifetime is governed by temp (not color temp) of LED and duty cycle. They lose brightness with time and usage.

Yeah, I don’t remember a requirement for LEDs, but for those stupid fluorescents. I love LEDs. I live in Texas, and the difference in heat generated by a five-light chandelier of 60 watt incandescents and the equivalent LEDs is very noticeable.

I do still use incandescent bulbs over the bathroom mirrors because the massive heat generated helps defog them.

The worst government lighting requirement has to be the ¿GU-24? sockets which were required to only be used by non-incandescent bulbs. I have a couple of these in the house. Of course, once non-incandescent bulbs came along that were demonstrably better than incandescent bulbs, people switched over on their own and there was no need to force it with nutty sockets. So now I have cheap Chinese converters in those sockets which will probably burn the house down if someone ever puts an incandescent in them.

I now replace the batteries in all my flashlights on May 1st, before hurricane season.

I've had too many flashlights when needed be non-op due to dead batteries, or non-op and ruined by leaking/corroded alkaline batteries. I have successfully cleaned the junk out of some flashlights using vinegar, but corroded batteries are near-impossible to get out of penlight flashlights and similar. I've found it cheaper in the long run to replace batteries annually in every flashlight. About 10 units, from AAA to D cell.

I now replace the batteries in all my flashlights on May 1st, before hurricane season.

I've had too many flashlights when needed be non-op due to dead batteries, or non-op and ruined by leaking/corroded alkaline batteries. I have successfully cleaned the junk out of some flashlights using vinegar, but corroded batteries are near-impossible to get out of penlight flashlights and similar. I've found it cheaper in the long run to replace batteries annually in every flashlight. About 10 units, from AAA to D cell.

Agreed. There are also those wall-pluggable flashlights that automatically turn on when the power goes out; quite useful here in Brown & Blackout Kalifornia.

Yeah, I was pretty young when I figured out that one. I worked at a hospital when I was in undergrad, and these shady people would come in and collect donated blood. Then a different group of ghouls would come in and drop off blood.

For some reason I expected them to be angels of mercy, doing the Lord's work. I never expected it to be Larry's Blood Service.

My FWP is everything is low-quality and no-longer-cheaply-priced.

Having bought half my "new" wardrobe at thrift stores, I find '90s items built in China. The quality is better than a Chinese item from 10 years ago in China and definitely better than anything labeled Shein.

I bought Clarks leather shoes a while back, so Amazon recently tempted me to "buy it again". The most recent reviews say the quality has dropped unbelievably.

They put out a really nice even light and don't buzz in my fixtures. I've put out six and had one fail due to flickering at maybe 100 hours, so I don't love that. Will see how the rest fare.

Good but not applicable, enforceable, whatever as RoHS standards are European.

The only properly promulgated federal exposure limits for mercury, lead, arsenic, etc. are for workplaces, under OSHA. Unfortunately, consumers/consumer products are hit and miss for exposure protections.

Had a similar experience with a tent. Arrived with one segment of one pole bent. I was instructed to ship the pole to them, so I did. Figured they would ship a replacement back but no. They emailed and said the pole couldn't be repaired and they would need photos ofbthe tent having been "field destroyed" before they would process the warranty replacement claim.

"What do you mean?"
"We need a photo of the tent cut in half."

Wow.

I very carefully cut the seam where the floor was attached to the body and sent a pic of the two piles of nylon. A week later an entire new tent package arrived.

So now I have spare poles, a second rain fly, a second stuff sack, and a footprint for my tent, the floor I cut off. I haven't figured out what I'm doing with the tent body but I'll figure something out.

All because some schlub at FedEx dropped my box too hard, and the tent company doesn't keep any spares inventory.

He uses the present tense in his assertion (in the title) but is actually describing the current situation vis a vis Trump and what he thinks the Supreme Court will do. Has anybody else listened to some of this post?

Nope - Adam Schiff explained the first couple of steps:

1) Jail Trump.

2) Trigger off riots (helped along by the FBI).

3) The riots are used to crush the opposition (arresting prominent Republicans, etc.).

4) A Democratic electoral victory, helped along by massive cheating.

5) Establishment of a permanent one-party state.

They're not playing by the old rules anymore.

636 Feel lucky, I do not think there is a single LED lightbulb in my house that has not been changed at least 4 times in the just under 10 years I have owned the house.

Every single last light bulb was changed when we moved in. Some have been replaced 7 times and none have lasted all 10 years, not even the damned attic light that is on maybe 4 hours a year for HVAC maintenance!

Oh, and it is not because I bought cheap lights. The lights of 10 years ago cost about $15-$25 each with a few I paid almost $50 each in order to get higher luminosity and a more white light for reading purposes.

637 Nah, you are not a geek but just a normal person. I date all the LED bulbs in use and also batteries with date of install.
Sadly, my experience with the LED's is they do not last anywhere near the rated hours on the box with very few exceptions.
