Denver Doubles Down on Welfare for "Newcomers Program," Increasing Benefits for Illegals While Cutting Spending on City Services for Citzens

We'll see if their increasingly insane gambles pay off in the end.The Denver City Council is doubling down on policies that offer free shelter and food to immigrants who cross the southern border illegally, which officials in west Texas say have been the primary draw to Colorado's most populous city. In an overview Tuesday of the city's response to the crisis -- the so-called "Newcomer Program" -- councilmembers learned that the immigrants will receive, at taxpayers' expense, six months of rental, food and utility assistance, a computer, prepaid cell phone and metro bus passes.In other words: We're paying them a salary for breaking our laws.

It's all part of a new strategy that pivots away from an emergency response to a long-term plan, a move that came on the heels of Mayor Mike Johnston trying to rein in spending and find the $90 million cost to pay for the immigrant response. Over the past 17 months, Denver had received nearly 42,000 immigrants. That is roughly the size of Brighton, which is located about 20 miles northeast of downtown Denver and is the county seat of neighboring Adams County. Not all have stayed. But plane, train and bus tickets purchased for immigrants to travel to their final U.S. destination suggest about half may have. Their arrival has pushed the city's finances to a breaking point. To finance its response, the city had cut some services, frozen hiring and decided against planting flowers to save money. ... To date, Denver's response has cost taxpayers about $70 million -- and counting. Early in the crisis, city leaders decided that Denver taxpayers would assume the cost to temporarily feed, shelter and transport immigrants to their final destination. While Denver officials long speculated that the city's proximity to the U.S. border, its transportation hub, which connects to major cities across the country, and status as a "sanctuary city" were the draw for immigrants, El Paso officials in west Texas point to something else: free shelter and tickets for onward travel.So many racist black people objecting to social services being diverted to non-citizen "newcomers." Fox News was on the ground in Jacumba, California, observing migrants who had come in across the southern border, and were waiting for several hours to be picked up and processed by Border Patrol agents. Some Colombians got sick of waiting for the feds to come pick them up, so they called a ride on the ride-sharing app and hopped in the car when it arrived.Secretary of Population Replacement Mayorkas says he's doing an "extraordinary" job waving in the invaders.
It was not clear if the driver knew that they were picking up illegal immigrants. The moment is a glimpse of how overwhelmed Border Patrol agents have been as they continue to deal with high numbers in the San Diego sector. "Like, no security, no security check, no background check," the migrant said, referring to his crossing into the United States. He said he worried about who is crossing the border, because "people are not normal."
During an interview with CBS News Immigration and Politics Reporter Camilo Montoya-Galvez, portions of which were released on Tuesday, Mayorkas claimed that the Biden administration has "done an extraordinary job to deal with an unprecedented level of migration," and that the unprecedented levels of "migration" are due to other factors. No doubt "other factors" include Donald Trump. Right, Alejandro? I'm not sure if Mayorkas is "just" a compulsive liar or a full-blown pathological liar.
Update: The illegal population in the US -- not the rate of illegal immigration, but the total number of illegal aliens in the country -- has doubled over the past three years. Where'd they come from? I assume that the source of these is those shoeboxes full of prepaid open-loop gift cards that used to make the news back during one of the Obama Administrations. At that time, they were reported as being a cash-trafficking mechanism for the cartels to repatriate drug money. That may be true, but those prepaid open-loop gift cards (Visa, MasterCard, AmEx branded cards that work anywhere) only work in the United States. It's part of the terms of service. Try to use one outside the country - even if it's just a foreign eCommerce site - and it is declined.
Those shoeboxes full of gift cards were always going to come back, and I suspect this is how they come back. The cartels foot the bill for these people, in exchange for that "money sent to my family back home." This is probably the "per diem."

The illegals were everywhere, even before the world ended in 2020. The vagrants populated every major intersection, even in my nice western suburb. In early 2019, the big interstate interchange about three miles from my house got its very own vagrant camp. It was rousted and dispersed within a week. In early 2020, it came back. It did not get rousted. The gas stations and shops in the area immediately became filthy and dangerous.
Three miles from my house, in what was otherwise still - for the time being - a nice part of town.
It was time to leave. The cancer radiating out from Denver along the interstate corridors had reached my town, and was entrenching.
I do not regret leaving.

Oh yes. Colorado - via the Denver Metro - was colonized. Twice, actually.
The first time was in the 90s, courtesy of the telecom boom. There big 'ole waves of outsourcing from the Pacific coast to "low-cost" Denver (and it was, by comparison). The telecom bust put an end to it, and Colorado somewhat normalized.
Then the recovering tech boom and California's skyrocketing costs set in, and the next wave of outsourcing to the interior began. Denver was a major target. It got rich, but it also got expensive and got populated primarily by Silicon Valley types. They didn't leave CA because they had to, or because they got sick of it, they left for their jobs. They didn't hate CA, and they didn't hate CO. They brought their attitudes and politics with them. They finished the colonization activity, and the DNC made it an active laboratory.
CO went 100% cheat-by-mail as soon as the Dems picked up majorities, and the rest is history.

First of all, if that's the truth, it would prove it's an illegitimate verdict. Because neither the chanting of "Lock her up" or encouraging the chanting is illegal (at this point). Thus if this were the direct fallout from that it proves that it is simple retribution for legal acts.
Second of all, we wouldn't be talking about this if they had kept to chanting. Chanting is not researching how to charge somebody. It's not changing laws, reverting the statute of limitations. It's not charging and trying somebody and convicting them.

Many are, in fact, here to work, and while many use welfare (why wouldn't they, we're stupid enough to provide it), I very much doubt they'd choose repatriation over staying, even without it.

There are way too many illegals in the US, and for all sorts of reasons. Sure, some are here to work. Others aren't. There seems to be a default assumption with many that it would be physically / logistically impossible to kick out all the invaders (completely independent of the political will), without any consideration for how they arrived let alone why they are here.
I *do* agree that some segments of this population will require more hmm, aggressive measures, but not all, and depending on the negative incentives towards staying, I don't think it would even be the majority.
But yeah, there's that political will thing.

All state criminal convictions are ultimately reviewable in federal court for compliance with constitutional and federal rights (due process, etc). But unfortunately, I think you have to go through all the state avenues for relief before you can go to the federal courts. It could take many years. That's why so many of these death-row cases take literally decades to resolve. Years in state court, then years in federal court.
