Daily Tech News 27 May 2024

Top Story

  • Widespread power failure at one of the two data centers where I have servers. In fact, it was so widespread that it took out servers I have with two different providers.

Yes, they have battery backup and generators.

No, those didn't work. At all.

But at least this time they didn't explode and set off the sprinkler system leaving the company with weeks of cleanup work.

  • Families of the victims in the Uvalde shooting, and the remoras with legs they call lawyers, are suing Activision and Facebook. (Tech Crunch)

They blame Call of Duty for turning a psychopath into, well, a psychopath.

The Call of Duty series has sold around half a billion copies over the past twenty years. If it were the problem, we would know.

Tech News

  • The Unreal Engine license requires programmers to use inclusive language in their code. (Bounding into Comics)

In particular, the license takes aim at using genders where none are specifically required by the context, and to avoid vernacular that might be unclear to those not familiar with English.

That's going to go down well with the speakers of gendered languages like French, Italian, Portuguese, and Spanish, whose languages Unreal owner Epic Games just collectively mega-aggressed.

  • Is the RTX 4060 really better than the RTX 3060. Yes. (Tom's Hardware)

It's not worth upgrading, perhaps, but there are very few cases where the 3060 is objectively better.

  • Windows 11 IoT Enterprise LTSC is coming - and it can run in 2GB of RAM. (Tom's Hardware)

That's because it strips out all the crap that nobody wants. It doesn't even have the TPM requirement that Microsoft declared an absolute minimum for Windows 11 compatibility.

Which is why you're not allowed to buy it.

  • One in nine US children are being diagnosed as children. (NPR)
Dr. Max Wiznitzer, a professor of pediatric neurology at Case Western Reserve University, says he suspects some parents may be reluctant to put their kids on ADHD medication out of misguided concerns. "There's the myth that it's addictive, which it's not." He says studies have shown people treated with ADHD have no increased risk of drug abuse.
    Really? Let's ask another expert.
The hypotheses underlying the procedure might be called into question; the ... intervention might be considered very audacious; but such arguments occupy a secondary position because it can be affirmed now that [this is] not prejudicial to either physical or psychic life of the patient, and also that recovery or improvement may be obtained frequently in this way.
Oh, my mistake. The second quote was talking about lobotomies.

  • ICQ is shutting down after 28 years. (The Verge)

    I don't think I ever used it.

22 My second ex-mother-in-law, the MILFy one, showed up in a dream of mine. I'd walked down to an intersection along a curving suburban avenue here. A Mexican child was riding a high-stepping gray horse along the road on the other side, in front of a high white wall that does not exist anywhere on that avenue in reality.

Then my ex-MIL called to me. She'd be something like eighty-five now, but in the dream she was as I knew her about forty years ago, kind of a red-haired "Marsha Mason in The Goodbye Girl." She wore workout clothes and was was walking along the side of the avenue. She began to tell me about some financial crisis that was in the news. Then I woke up.

Analysis of Ötzi's intestinal contents showed two meals (the last one consumed about eight hours before his death), one of chamois meat, the other of red deer and herb bread; both were eaten with roots and fruits. The grain also eaten with both meals was a highly processed einkorn wheat bran.

More people were slim and *tried* to be attractive, and often succeeded, than they do now. I was young with a car and a little money, too. As decent as the '70s look in many ways compared to now? The '80s had it all going on.

We're going to have heat indices over 100 today. So if I am going to work out, it's got to be now, before the sun comes up.

55 Mornin' Horde. Pity about ICQ. I made good use of that little instant messenger back when it came out, then Mirabilis sold out to AOL, who sold out to Digital Sky Technologies. Years later, I tried firing it back up via the Pidgin client in Linux, and got logged in and then immediately got logged out for "suspicious activity", and got given a URL to unlock the account if I'd cough up a mobile phone number. Nope. That wasn't the agreement, and I'm not playing "Go Phish".

Given the story about them shutting down, I tried signing in via their web interface yesterday, and got in, and was able to skip the petulant demand for a phone number. Got to see some old contacts on my contact list but that's about it.

RIP ICQ.

Of course just before that, we were discussing the question of if there were a shooting at O.C. this weekend, would the Baltimore news report it or hide the fact.

While the Baltimore news has nothing about it, apparently there was a 15 year old knifed on the boardwalk on Saturday night. And a bunch of rather violent fights on the same boardwalk on Friday night.

Speaking of, we started watching Fallout on Amazon yesterday. Overall a good show and looks well done, BUT the very first episode introduces the Brotherhood of Steel and has a poor little scrawny girl that has a 14 year old boy mustache and the actress lady thinks that makes her a man, and the people 300 years in the future - who think nothing of beating the crap out of a black dude or murdering others at will or for fun - use "They / them" when referring to her.

(She's badass gets promoted to become a knight, of course, and everyone cheers for her because she's so loved and awesome)

Don't recall further information about shooter's grandmother working there (cafeteria &/or aide?); cousins attending the school at time of shooting; that he hadn't returned to finish high school after C19, and more. Had he been well known around the elementary school prior to the shooting, contributing to delay in appropriate response? Didn't the school's admin. office have an active 'intercom' system to be able to listen in & address classrooms? (Even I recall many years ago teachers could step out of their classrooms in a large majority of schools but admin. listened in to hear if & what kids misbehaved in their absences.)

I don't remember so many questions about how and why gone unanswered...until Tennessee.

Saw a vid yesterday talking about how English is weird, and one thing it pointed out is that English's lack of gendered nouns is shared by a mere 1.4% of all languages, and it's actually a relatively recent thing, as Old English was also a gendered language, but as it progressed into Middle English that started to drop out.

So the leftists aren't just mega-aggressing other Euro languages, they're aggressing over 7,000 languages around the world......
