On Memorial Day Remember Those Who Gave Their Lives To Protect America

It is okay to go eat a hot dog this week. And there is no issue with zooming around on the lake or sipping cold beers on the beach this Memorial Day weekend. However, these activities are not the reason for Memorial Day, and allowing this fact to be forgotten is something patriotic Americans have been fearful of for some time.

Our ability to relax and enjoy the extra time off is directly to honor those who died fighting to protect our freedom throughout our nation’s history. Their sacrifice paid for the fact that we have that day to honor our war-dead

May 28th is Memorial Day; it was called Decoration Day. Remember what it’s all about. Memorial Day is a holiday that means so much more than hot dogs, parades, and the start of the summer. Not that those things are bad, but it isn’t Memorial Day unless we remember what the day is really about—honoring the people who laid down their lives to save our families and to protect the land of the free. Keep in mind. Memorial Day honors those who were killed while serving in our nation’s military, not all veterans. They are honored on November 11th.

Hmmm. Perhaps the name Killer Whale should mean something. ........an unthinkable attack that nobody saw coming.

Keto the killer whale ravaged his trainer in an unthinkable attack that nobody saw coming.

Alexis Martínez., 29, had worked with orcas for several years and was used to handling the whales but on Christmas Eve, 2009, Keto acted in a way that had never been seen by his trainers before.

Even the low level Stasi gets off on giving the USA a big F You.

Today’s Blacklisted American: To celebrate Memorial Day, a federal official bans the American flag

In another example of the fundamental hostility that federal officials feel for their country, officials at Alaska’s Denali National Park recently told contractors working in the park they were forbidden from flying Old Glory on their trucks and equipment, as construction workers have done for more than a century.

According to the contractor, Denali National Park Superintendent Brooke Merrell contacted the man overseeing the federal highways project, claiming there had been complaints about the U.S. flags, and notifying him that bridge workers must stop flying the stars and strips from their vehicles because it detracts from the “park experience.”
Denali National Park Superintendent Brooke Merrell

“The trucks are flying these American flags, about a foot atop the trucks, about three-foot by four-foot flags, and they said they don’t want this,” the contractor explained. “They’re saying it isn’t conducive and it doesn’t fit the park experience.”

Up until this week, however, the flags were displayed without incident. It was only when the park began running tour buses that the order was given to take down the flags, he added

41 “No one can rejoice more than I do at every step the people of this great country take to preserve the Union, establish good order and government, and to render the nation happy at home and respectable abroad. No country upon earth ever had it more in its power to attain these blessings than United America. Wondrously strange then, and much to be regretted indeed would it be, were we to neglect the means, and to depart from the road which Providence has pointed us, so plainly; I cannot believe it will ever come to pass. The Great Governor of the Universe has led us too long and too far on the road to happiness and glory, to forsake us in the midst of it. By folly and improper conduct, proceeding from a variety of causes, we may now and then get bewildered; but I hope and trust that there is good sense and virtue enough left to recover the right path before we shall be entirely lost.”

When I was a boy my family and I frequently drove past Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery on our way to various places on Fort Sam Houston. The cemetery did not much extend past the stone walls built during the Depression. Now the cemetery is massive. In the mid 1990s while learning to drive a stick shift at Cole HS I could see the additional grave sites increasing by number well past the stone walls. Today my father is buried in an area that probably had field exercises held there when he was an NCO stationed at Fort Sam.

The expansion doubtless is caused by the slow march of the WWII era vets into the sunset.

San Antonio in 2017 had about 100 Pearl Harbor survivors. Last I checked the number is now 2.

146 Today's internet blow-up involves one David Austin Walsh.

He's been a good soldier for the Left - he got a Ph.D. in history from Princeton, is finishing up a book explaining how awful American conservatism is (including exploring the copious ties between William F. Buckley and the American Nazi Party), and denounces on X any enemies of progressivism and racial quotas.

He's held a series of poorly-paying postdocs since he got his Ph.D., and at age 35 it's finally dawned on him that he will never be offered a history professorship at any "high-ranking" university, simply because he is a white male.

He made the mistake of posting this revelation on X - Chris Rufo and other conservatives offered to help, and he made it clear that he didn't want any help from Those People. Meanwhile, his former allies are now furiously denouncing him for saying what is obviously true.

One conservative made the observation that the Left is making a mistake - someone who has been as good a soldier for the Left as this guy has been needs to be rewarded. However, the Left has progressed beyond thinking that they need people like this as allies.

232 Today has always been my family's day for tending all graves, of relatives who served or not.

My daughter was working so I'm proud to say I did about 150 miles and four cemeteries, with multiple folks in each.

I inherited graves from my mother, aunt, and husband, four of whom have no one who tends their spots but me now; my mom's childless widowed landlady during WW II while dad was in Europe, who supported herself by renting rooms--if it's been a wet spring, her stone gets turfed over, but not this year--and neighbors of my aunt's, who had one child late in life who never told them he was gay until he came home to die of AIDS in the early 80s--they nursed him until he died, and it broke their hearts and they died not too many years after.

One thing that saddened me today was not seeing as many people out, or fresh flowers left, as in years past. I saw a couple family groups, but most of the few people I saw were as old as me or older.

My daughter knows who everyone is and where they are, as she goes with me on years she can, and she will take them over when I'm gone, but I suspect she will be part of a small minority, rapidly dwindling.

320 The Mars Flying Boat?

Pass. Needs a huge ground crew to handle it at the docks, and worse, to wrassle it onto it's land-based "carriage" at the bottom of the boat ramp, and then a big-ass tractor, usually a large Caterpillar unit, to haul it up out of the water and onto the apron, next to a hangar.

Next to, 'cause there are approximately zero remaining hangars large enough, that are also sited in proximity to a large enough to set 'er down body of water, and wide and deep enough concrete ramp.

PBY-5A for the win. Fully amphibious. Same with the Grumman Albatross.

Nice to be able to choose, water or runway. And the pilot can just taxi it up the boat ramp, over to and INTO the hangar.

Her Majesty says there are three kinds of RV/trailer travelers she sees in parks. One is the itinerent workmen who may spend a week or two at a site. Then there's the people who want to have a home on wheels. The third, including her, is camping on wheels.

We just came back from our first 'camping' trip in our couples trailer. Was first time ever 'camping' for Mrs. Anonymous Rogue. We planned to go four days at San Simeon State Park but extended two more so we could go to Montana del Oro near Morro Bay. Our little 29' trailer worked great and Mrs. AR is willing to go again. We dry camped and roughed it with no cell service in either park. It was very cold with highs only in the low 60's and lows in the hi 40's lo 50's. I did have to run a portable generator so Mrs AR could have her blow-dryer and we could keep the battery charged.

I never realized the sea animal park performance circuit was like the Catholic church with its pedo priests in how it handled its problems.

I would think shuffling an intelligent animal like an orca around into new environments, receiving different trainers and being cut off from any flippered friends they might have made might make their behavior a little more erratic, ergo deadly.

395 As is my want on this day at dawn,

I hit my alarm button, clambered out from under warm bedding, put feet into shoes by my bedside.

Shuffled over to my closet and reached up onto the top shelf to retrieve two items from their proper storage and clasped them under one arm. I then exited my bedroom through the sliding glass door into an overcast chilly morning and proceeded across my side yard to the wooden fenceline and my flagpole mounted atop my front fence.

There, I undid the lanyard and lowered the clips to afix first the Stars & Stripes followed by the USMC Scarlet below that and then...raised both up the flagpole to half staff and then secured the lanyard.

There it remained til noon. I then came out and raised the flags to the top of the flagpole and secured them.

I had a family BBQ this day, my #1 was present (he of 5 deployments with the Corps in Iraq and Afgan). It was a very good day.

At dusk, #1 and I, lowered the colors and the USMC Scarlet and folded them per tradition and I placed them back in my closet on the upper shelf.

Hope you all had a fine day as I today.

Flying Piedmont/USAir was where I first had smoked almonds. Still like them. IIRC, decades ago they switched to pretzels.

But this whole thing with nuts. I've not heard of the peanut allergy being transmitted from other nuts. Maybe it's because peanuts are really a legume? I don't know. But it's like because this one fish in all the oceans is toxic to this small number of humans, none of us can eat any fish.

She kept it in the passenger footwell, and all was fine . . . until we got to the store, and she was removing it to put it in the trunk. It started leaking and sent its white chemical fog all through my car!

I opened the doors and the fumes blew away as she threw the canister in the dumpster. But every surface of my interior had a fine white dust on it. I was furious, of course. "Did you ever think that the can got thrown away because it was defective?"

We cleaned it as best we could, and when we got home she went to work with wet wipes and got rid of the rest. The car is fine. I hope the dust wasn't dangerous to us, though.

There was a particular use for them in parts of the rural South into the late Sixties/early Seventies. Nothing perverse or unnatural, but connected to lacking in-door plumbing and living in deep poverty. More detail would probably not be welcome. I'll just say I was happy to live in a home with indoor plumbing and this was a phenomenon I only heard ot second-hand.

Flowers and flags on graves on Memorial Day is a tradition in rural MN.

It probably is dying out, as the Boomers age out of "lets take a two-hour drive to the cemetery to put down some plastic flowers," and the GenXers and Millennials move to big cities in other states to get jobs.

It was a bigger thing when everyone lived on the farm or in the same small town, and you could put out real flowers and go water them for the rest of the summer, because the cemetery was walking distance, or maybe right next to the church you went to every Sunday.

492 Dreams last night . . . at first I was a young newlywed, married to a pretty blonde girl who looked like Michelle Williams. We were moving into our first house. In the kitchen, which seemed to have no windows, was a leftover piece of furniture: a breakfront, I think it used to be called. But this one was like a storage unit. The front had a myriad of cubbyholes, some open, most hidden with opening or sliding panels, some covered in little glass doors in front of the wooden panels. I could see the fine mahogany woodwork and the gleam of the glass. I could only imagine how much work had gone into it . . . and every time I looked at it, it seemed to have grown more cubbyholes and compartments. A metaphor for the storytelling process, maybe?

Makes sense - it was a practical application for a given problem. Mrs. Drake, who's a big city girl, heard an off-hand reference to it once when we were visiting relatives in my old neck of the woods, and asked me what the Hell are they talking about - I briefly explained and she was completely horrified.

495 Second dream (thanks, melatonin): I had moved in with a male roommate or was visiting a friend, and woke up in my bed not knowing where everything was. I knew I had to brush my teeth before going to sleep. The bathroom turned out to be bigger than I expected: a huge long room with windows and chem lab tables at intervals, though only one table, running under the windows, had running water. It was morning, though. Four or five other guys were in there brushing their teeth and getting ready to shave. With daylight I saw the room extended a ways back with furniture, tables and chairs, stored in it, including one booth like you'd see in a diner. I was showing one of the guys how to mix water with Dr. Tichenor's antiseptic ("Don't use it straight, it'll blow out your throat") for a mouthwash, when I woke up.

Thanks, Miklos! Had not heard of them before. You gotta check out Webb Wilder. His album Mississippi Moderne is a good starting point, but I think the best intro might be a ltittle gem called "Horror Hayride":

Yeah, it's kinda gross... But hey, not *everyone* got a Sears catalog. Or perhaps said catalog didn't last until the next one would arrive?

We are in NW IL, family's been doing this forever. But I suspect I'll be the last to carry on the tradition.

I know Grandma used to put peonies on Grandpa's Great-Uncle George's grave. These old early small peonies came from a plant from George's home.

George W. B. was born in 1849, one of the first pioneer children born in this township. His older brother Thomas J. B., my ancestor, was said to be the first male pioneer child born here.

504 PrincetonUnibersity students disrupt Memorial Day parade by alumnae. To advocate for "Free Palestine" As someone noted in the comments , did it not occur to these dolts that some of the alumnae might be people you're looking to for jobs? Did it not occur to the. University that some of the alumnae attending reunions might chose to give their money somewhere else because of the actions of these students?

506 Farmer

My roses are usually gangbusters this time of year...

Sad that this year-- the irises are done, peonies are all wimpy hybrids that fall apart within hours of picking, roses just beginning to form buds. Other little perennials are also way behind normal schedule. I got nuthin' to make into bouquets right now.
