Stuck In The Middle With ONT

Welcome to Thursday night! So, start with a question: What could you say or do to make your dad call you immediately?

Paging Dr. Welby, Paging Dr. Marcus Welby

'A Failed Medical School': How Racial Preferences, Supposedly Outlawed in California, Have Persisted at UCLA

One professor said that a student in the operating room could not identify a major artery when asked, then berated the professor for putting her on the spot. Another said that students at the end of their clinical rotations don't know basic lab tests and, in some cases, are unable to present patients.
"I don't know how some of these students are going to be junior doctors," the professor said. "Faculty are seeing a shocking decline in knowledge of medical students."
And for those who've seen the competency crisis up close, double standards in admissions are a big part of the problem. "All the normal criteria for getting into medical school only apply to people of certain races," an admissions officer said. "For other people, those criteria are completely disregarded."

DEI is no longer a stupid leftist thing, or something we can laugh at and not be too inconvenienced. Now it's manifesting with deadly results. It needs to be re-branded DIE.

Good Riddance

The ‘Butcher of Tehran’ Meets a Mountain

Thirty-five years after taking part in the massacre of thousands, President Ebrahim Raisi’s helicopter went down over a mountain. Inside the chopper was the body of the man viewed as the likely future Supreme Leader of Iran along with his Foreign Minister and various other officials of the Islamic terrorist regime.

The Iranian people celebrated the death of the man known as the ‘Butcher of Tehran’ with fireworks and dances. Many of those celebrating were the women whom he had tormented for so long.

President Raisi was said to have harbored a special hatred for women and he has been held responsible for everything from prison rapes to the torture of pregnant women. The cleric and former prosecutor had overseen the brutal suppression of human rights protests against the Islamic regime as part of a record of his crimes against humanity going back to the 1980s.

Inshallah.

A Great American

Augustus Wilson's obituary

Mr. and Mrs, Priest near Chambersville bought one of Mr. Wilson's farms, paying some money down – and giving a mortgage on the rest – soon after the transaction Mr. Priest died leaving Mrs. Priest with four small children and the mortgage – she was trying desperately to keep the payments up – one day she was washing clothes at the back of the house when Uncle Gus walked up – after a brief conversation Mrs. Priest said "Mr. Wilson, the next payment on the land will be due in about 10 days and I think I'll be able to meet it." Mr. Wilson said, "I did not stop by for any payment, I stopped by for a drink of water". Mrs. Priest said, "I'll get you a drink" and Mr. Wilson said, "No, you go on with your washing – I'll get it I know where it is" so he went into the kitchen for a drink. When the noon-hour came Mrs. Priest went in to prepare lunch and when she turned over a plate on the table – she found the mortgage marked "paid in full" – all payments cancelled out.

I say “We used to be a great country” jokingly a lot, but damn it, we used to be a great country. More stories about this old school Texas character at the link.

Advice Column

Advice for a Happy Life by Charles Murray

Start by jarring yourself out of unreflective atheism or agnosticism. A good way to do that is to read about contemporary cosmology. The universe isn't only stranger than we knew; it is stranger and vastly more unlikely than we could have imagined, and we aren't even close to discovering its last mysteries. That reading won't lead you to religion, but it may stop you from being unreflective.

Find ways to put yourself around people who are profoundly religious. You will encounter individuals whose intelligence, judgment and critical faculties are as impressive as those of your smartest atheist friends—and who also possess a disquieting confidence in an underlying reality behind the many religious dogmas.

They have learned to reconcile faith and reason, yes, but beyond that, they persuasively convey ways of knowing that transcend intellectual understanding. They exhibit in their own personae a kind of wisdom that goes beyond just having intelligence and good judgment.

Some good advice at the link. You may not agree with all of it, but you'll agree with some of it.

Where So, So Many Men Have Gone Before

Hollywood Is Rebooting ‘Star Trek’ Film Franchise … Again

And does America really want a fourth Star Trek franchise in nearly as many decades? The problem with the attempts to reboot this series is that none of the later actors can hold a candle to the icons that made up the original cast. William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, DeForest Kelley, James Doohan, and the rest looked like people who should be on the big screen — they are movie stars. The Next Generation had Patrick Stewart, but the rest of the cast felt like TV actors. The Chris Pine crowd never came off as adults. They always gave the impression of kids play-acting.

In today’s woke, anti-masculine, unisex world, it is hard to see this casting problem improving with a fourth franchise. You just know it’s going to be full of drag queens, transsexuals, transvestites, and gay stuff. The excuse for this icky crap will be that Star Trek has always been on the cutting edge of politics. Yeah, in the sixties, when the cutting edge was sane, when the cutting edge was about professionalism, equal opportunity, not being offended over words, individual liberty, the importance of every human life, and a masculine, forward-looking foreign policy based on peace through strength.

I've been a Star Trek fan for decades, but I have no interest in this. I haven't watched much of it since Voyager, although I did watch the 3rd season of Picard, which was very good.

Look, Up In The Sky!

Astronomers Accidentally Find A Galaxy That Hasn’t Birthed Any Stars

Astronomers may have found a dark, primordial galaxy — an enormous, undisturbed mass of cold hydrogen gas that has yet to form any stars — sitting in the modern-day universe.
If confirmed, the object could offer astronomers a look at an early stage of galactic evolution. “I’ve been in this field for quite a few decades, and we’ve wanted to find something like this for a very long time,” study leader Karen O’Neil, an astronomer at the Green Bank Observatory in West Virginia, tells Astronomy.

The first hint of something unusual was a discrepancy between observations made by the Green Bank Telescope (GBT) and the Nançay Radio Telescope in France as part of a coordinated survey of faint galaxies. Though they were supposed to be looking at the same patch of sky, the 100-meter-wide GBT was seeing something the Nançay Radio Telescope wasn’t.

“Upon looking a little bit closer at it and spending far too much time, we discovered that we had actually mistyped the coordinates in the GBT catalog,” O’Neil said Jan. 8 at a press conference at the winter meeting of the American Astronomical Society (AAS) in New Orleans. “This is something, unfortunately, astronomers do occasionally late at night.”

Pretty cool.

Armageddon It

Loose Talk About the End of Everything

But what has radically transformed are the delivery systems of mass death—nuclear weapons, chemical gases, biological agents, and artificial-intelligence-driven delivery systems.
Oddly, the global reaction to the promise of Armageddon remains one of nonchalance. Most feel that such strongmen rant wildly but would never unleash weapons of civilizational destruction.

Consider that there are as many autocratic nuclear nations (e.g., Russia, China, Pakistan, North Korea, and perhaps Iran) as democratic ones (U.S., Britain, France, Israel, and India). Only Israel has an effective anti-ballistic missile dome. And the more the conventional power of the West declines, the more in extremis it will have to rely on a nuclear deterrent—at a time when it has no effective missile defense of its homelands.

Chilling indeed.

3 Good morning, Morons.

Yes. Morning. About 5AM here in northern Israel. Up since 4AM. And I'll tell you why.

Nothing like having a deep sleep when all of a sudden an intercept rocket (Patriot? Iron Dome?) launches from an adjacent mountain top and intercepts an incoming unidentified aircraft within a split second.

Then there's a quieter explosion somewhere above and flickering lights lighting up the sky. This is followed 10 to 30 seconds later by the soundw of multiple fragments falling to earth and landing close by on the neighbors' properties. Perhaps a lucky souvenir awaits us outside when there's enough sunlight (crack of dawn now) to look around.

Have a nice day! This is your roving reporter signing off.

We've been undergoing house renovations forever. Starting to take a toll. I looked up the most psychologically disturbing movies ever and have started to watch them.

Today is 'Eden Lake' on Amazon Prime. English couple go on vacation to a lake and get terrorized by teenage kids. It's scarier now since, hell, kids in Western cities are now feral.

So the next time I'm upset about the house, I'll at least think how great it is to not be stabbed deeply by a bunch of young teenagers.

Besides, vax genocide. I need to toughen up.

Everyone have a good night. Except for the pretty lady who was just captured by the teens.... A lot of disturbing crap can happen in 28 more minutes....

1. The Ukrainian forces have stopped, for the moment, the Russian advances near the northeast city of Kharhov. They did this by stripping men and equipment from other sectors. As you may imagine, this is not working in the Ukrainians overall favor.

Trite but 'all it takes for evil to flourish is for good men to do nothing.'

This one time back in the late '80s, my season ticket seatmate at the NYRangers was getting harassed by these guys behind us, not seasoners as I didn't recognize them. They soon went from verbal to knocking his his cap and kippa off. I got pissed and started to stand up. My seatmate told me to leave it alone. I couldn't. I stoop up, turned around, looked up at them and pointed my finger saying to cut the crap, to knock the shit off. Then the other seasoners around me who saw everything started chanting 'Throw them out!' A lot. A minute or so later an usher came and escorted them out.

Point is, one always has choices. Staying silent is just not my choice.

141 Thanks WD. Good stuff. The Charles Murray article was interesting. I very much enjoy when a true intellectual explores the idea of faith and happiness possibly being equally important to reason and "science". He claims to be an agnostic but his disbelief is on shaky ground. I recently discovered GK Chesterton and a very cross that nowhere in my k through doctorate education was he ever brought up. One of the most respected intellectuals of his time, started as an atheist ended up a devout Catholic. And was a brilliant debater and essay writer and book writer. He was a contemporary with CS Lewis and JRR Tolkien among others. CS Lewis was a devout atheist, and he credits reading Chesterton into converting him to devout Christianity. He would have been a hell of a guy to discuss life with over dinner and alcoholic beverages. He's hilarious, and one of the best apologists for faith, Christianity, and Catholicism. The guy could write. Brilliant.

I'll go against the grain. The best ST was 'Deep Space 9'; Quark, hands down, the best character. I also admit to liking 'Enterprise'. But then I always saw Scott Bakula as a personable actor and enjoyed 'Quantum Leap'.

Now? My least favorite is 'The Next Generation', especially that first year or two. The first year, the women's uniforms looked like they were tailored by the people from the 1966 show. Absolutely ridiculous. Then there's Wesley.

But the original series has some classics. And classic bloopers, too. My favorite was when Kirk had some audio boosted '1 to the 4th power'.

Apparently, math wasn't the screenwriters' strong suit.

Usually when you say 'hit' it means 'broke'
Excavator just skuffed the line.

326 Woman's colon cancer caused by heartburn pill, lawsuit alleges

https://mol.im/a/13452063

This is bullshit. The drug has to decompose and release dimethylamine. Chances of that happening are small. Chances it isn't removed are smaller still. Then a nitrosating agent has to be around (currently gut bacteria are mentioned). This would be another minuscule chance. Finally the N-nitroso-dimethylamine so formed would have to hang around long enough to alkylate DNA or whatever the cancer-inducing step is. So many minuscule chances have to combine.

And the pill worked as stated!

The problems with full-time Youtubers are:

1. They see their viewers as ATM machines.

2. They are basically internet pan-handlers/street performers.

3. They consider their livestreams "shows."

They fire up the camera and put on a show. And their objective is to push the viewer's "buttons" to elicit emotion, thus generate superchats. They need to constantly "up" the antics and controversy, which begins to distort truth and reality in their real lives.

Jill Biden's dress looks like it went up in flames so the designer cut out the unburned half of it and wrapped it around her and pinned a giant scarf around the top.

Hillary otoh has surrendered to her waistline and culturally appropriated the caftan.

Mate-wise, Huma Abedin has gone out of the frying pan into the fire. Anthony Wiener is probably staring at those pics in disbelief. But where does she get the money for her shit? She always had a wardrobe insanely beyond her GS level.

Pete Buttigieg is turning into a little teapot, short and stout. He doubtless retains presidential ambitions.

395 390 The best Enterprise episodes were the "Archer on Vulcan" 3 episode arc in the last season.

The one were Archer gets Surak's "Katra" or whatever it is. I love it, where Archer, infused with Surak's consciousness, schools T'Pol on being a Vulcan.

Posted by: publius, Rascally Mr. Miley (w6EFb) at May 24, 2024 12:21 AM (w6EFb)

That was a good one. I liked the cute rebel leader. She had this cute haircut that was light years away from the pete rose they made T'pol wear. Then they have that stupid alternate universe episode and T'pol is sporting this smoking long blond hair. They could have done that in the normal show but nooooo, let her wear the Pete Rose/Moe Howard.

398 Mayo or Gravy on the side, for fries, are both great, in my view.

Ketchup though. Red sugar sauce for 8 year olds.

At least the Brits have their malt vinegar for their chips.

And Texas, has the Whataburger SPICY Ketchup, for fries.

It's still a Ketchup, but at least they've TRIED.

402 272 I had the plumbers come in and excavate to figure out what was wrong with the main sewer line. It had a root blockage, this they knew, from a broken line.

they had to excavate to find out what was going on.
Apparently when Pacific Northwest Gas did the horizontal boring to renew gas line for the street, they ran their bore through my sewer line, which tends to impair the flow.

Posted by: Kindltot at May 23, 2024 11:34 PM (D7oie)

Since the gas company wrecked your sewer line, will they pay to repair it?

Did they call the location service to mark underground utilities, or just start boring?

Did the locator service not properly mark your sewer, or did the gas company ignore the marking?

Seems someone not named Kindltot should pay for the sewer repair.

Good call! The poor old sewer line was just sitting there, minding its own, passing shit, and along comes the gas company and bores a transverse hole through, and stuffs a pipe through, nearly blocking the line altogether. Not to mention the possibility of the gas line working against the raw edge of the sewer pipe, and chafing through, and filling Kindltot's home with gas, via the sewers.

I know, mean solar day, apparent solar day, or sidereal day? I just can't deal with the ambiguity.....

That reminds me of a fun fact. Astronomers used to start the day at noon, not midnight. This is still reflected in the Julian date system. Days start at noon, UT.

And I ran into the reason for this. When a new days starts at midnight, it splits a night up into two pieces. It will mess you up looking for rise, set and transit times for stars and such.

By starting the day at noon, that problem is eliminated.

The coroner ruled Bon Scott's death as "death by misadventure". I love that. We don't have that as a legal cause of death in the US, but they do in Commonwealth countries still.

It's not homicide/suicide, but not "accidental death" either. It means basically you were doing something a reasonable person would know could "kill your fool self" and it did.

The reason AK is so messed up, with sunset happening after midnight is time zone. Geographically, AK should be UTC - 10, not -9. Then add DST in, and that's what you get.

Yeah, but if the day that the sun doesn't shine again for many weeks coincides with Friday eve...
But I'm sure there are rules in place for those situations, and situations when the sun is up all day (easier to work with as you have a minimum and maximum position of the sun).

And Longitude, with a good clock tracking UT (GMT). Determine "Local Mean Solar Time", which is different from Apparent Solar time (see the Equation of Time).

Longitude was a hard one. Latitude was done by sighting well known stars as well.

It is still done with the Julian date system, and ephemeris time (expressing ephemeris time as a Julian date and all that).

To keep the t numbers reasonable, you choose an "epoch", and that is currently J2000, Mean noon, Jan 1, 2000.

I haven't done it, and I won't, but sometimes my mind wanders to dark places...)

The 10/7 videos are horrifying. I watch them with my fists stuffed into my mouth in disbelief, and tears in my eyes. I don't want to see that evil.

But I think we have to. Number one, to bear witness to what the victims suffered at the hands of barbarians.

But number two, we HAVE to rub the noses of the miseducated in what "from the river to the sea" actually MEANS. There's no other choice. If we don't, they'll go on believing the "colonization" lies, and the "occupation" lies. The time for polite conversation is over. We're losing the PR war.

IMAO, Obama was the beginning for all the shit that is happening now. One issue began with knocking cops: 'the Cambridge police acting stupidly'. Then there was the whole 'it's okay to be racist against whites' with his 'typical white grandmother' comment, the grandmother who paid for the elite schooling of his worthless mulatto ass.

He was a known radical with extreme views. Just look how he viewed the Constitution as 'a charter of negative liberties' for government. Cripes, that's turning the Constitution on its bloody head, even for an associate professor of Constitutional law (non-tenure track).

But that's a commie for you. Obama was the catalyst that kicked this whole shebang off. (Yeah, I know, phrasing)

No interesting dreams, even semi-coherent ones, to report. Waking up (in a dream) to find your cats have spread newspaper all over the kitchen floor is not news. Even if the kitchen is much larger than the one you actually have -- and your coffeemaker suddenly does not work. Nah.

'Tis Friday!

A temp of 67 at 3 am? In May? Unbelievable. As in "unbelievably nice."

535 Jim, it's been over 40 years since I have been back to LaPorte for any length of time - I vaguely remember Kemah, but I was pretty young then, so the memories are pretty hazy....
