THE MORNING RANT: Mega-Woke Retailer Target “Unexpectedly” Has Another Disappointing Quarter with Declining Top-Line Revenue

Target logo.JPG

Since May 2023, when Target precipitated a ferocious backlash with its collection of “Pride Month” merchandise targeted at children, I’ve been monitoring Target’s quarterly financial performance. Target’s wokeness goes far beyond its vulgar, inappropriate children’s merchandise, of course. As I documented a few months ago, Target has also welcomed men into its women’s restrooms and prohibited police from arresting shoplifters in its stores.

Target’s embrace of degeneracy has repelled customers, caused a decrease in store traffic, hurt its earnings, and most importantly, it has caused a top line reduction in revenue. Sales are lower. No matter what clever metric is being touted (margins, adjusted earnings, etc), nothing can change the fact that the top line revenue number started going down after Pride Month (June) 2023 and Target can’t reverse the trend, because those lost customers aren’t coming back. Coincidentally enough, while Target is seeing decreasing same-store sales, Walmart is seeing increasing same-store sales. Walmart is also gaining new customers while Target is losing customers.

Wall Street “experts” and analysts keep being surprised by Target’s revenue and earnings problems, and they must then try to explain why the company keeps falling short of Wall Street estimates. Yet none of the analyses I’ve read has acknowledged that there is significant anti-woke boycott that persists against Target. The business press strangely blames “inflation battered” households for not spending money at Target, while simultaneously reporting elsewhere that inflation has been defeated and that consumers are doing great, causing the stock market to reach record highs due to consumers’ joyful and abundant spending.

Well, Target just released its earnings report for the quarter ended 3/31/2024 and it was another “unexpectedly” bad quarter, falling short of “expert” predictions, with same-store sales continuing to show a year-over-year decline.

“Target earnings miss the mark as inflation-battered shoppers avoid buying things they don't really need” [Yahoo Finance – 5/22/2024]

Target (TGT) missed the earnings mark in the first quarter. Blame inflation-battered US households, its execs say. The "biggest challenges" Target is hearing about from its shoppers are "inflation in food and household essentials," chairman and CEO Brian Cornell said on a call with reporters detailing first quarter results.

By contrast, just a few days earlier Wal Mart reported exceptional results for the same quarter, with its CFO stating, “We’ve got customers that are coming to us more frequently than they have before and newer customers that we haven’t traditionally had.”

“…customers that we haven’t traditionally had.” In other words, customers who used to shop at Target are now shopping at Walmart.

This Forbes Business piece lists some of the lowlights of Target’s disastrous quarter. Here is a comparison of Target’s quarterly results to Wal Mart’s:

Total Quarterly Revenue compared to prior-year Quarter
• Wal Mart: Up 6.0%
• Target: Down 3.1%

Same-store Quarterly Revenue compared to prior-year Quarter
• Wal Mart: Up 3.8%
• Target: Down 3.7%

Total Quarterly Operating Income compared to prior-year Quarter
• Wal Mart: Up 9.6%
• Target: Down 2.4%

The CNBC piece I linked above regarding Wal Mart’s success comically points out that inflation is low again, which benefits Wal Mart.

This week brought promising news for Walmart and other retailers: Inflation eased in April, according to the Labor Department data released Wednesday. The consumer price index was up 3.4% year over year.

So if I’ve got this right, Target is suffering from high inflation – not an anti-woke boycott – yet that same high inflation somehow doesn’t hurt Wal Mart, but it’s all good, because inflation is not actually high, just 3.4% per year. Thank God I’m not a “legitimate” business journalist trying to contort myself into promoting this self-contradictory propaganda.

Related, despite Target’s decreasing revenue and disappointing earnings, its stock price has been soaring. It exceeded $170 per share just last month, which was higher than before the Pride Month debacle started for Target a year ago. If investors are still recklessly driving up the stock price of a fading retailer with declining sales – a retailer which is also despised by much of its potential customer base - there is clearly some irrational exuberance in the market.

Don’t let up. The boycott is hurting Target, which is much more likely to follow the path of Sears and K-Mart than it is to ever regain sales lost to Walmart.

*****

My latest piece at The Pipeline, Just Stop ‘Just Stop Oil’, has been published.

In it I take a dive into Just Stop Oil, the crime wave funded by its parent organization (Climate Emergency Fund), and the prominent, old-money benefactors who are funding it all. Incredibly, it’s all tax deductible for those rich leftists, because Climate Emergency Fund is a tax exempt 501(c)(3) organization.

Do the wealthy benefactors of CEF and Just Stop Oil openly support those organizations’ activities? Yes and no. The illegal yet “peaceful” civil disobedience is celebrated, while the actual violence has a degree of separation allowing the benefactors to claim “no direct control.”

Per Climate Emergency Fund’s own website, it also provides funding to Germany’s “Letzte Generation” (Last Generation), an organization so radical and violent that even the German Green Party has disavowed it, as several of its members were arrested last year for plotting to sabotage an oil pipeline.

What to do? For starters. the Climate Emergency Fund should be stripped of its 501(c)(3) status, and the prosecution of crimes committed under its umbrella can no longer just target the street “activists” committing the crimes.

I’d be honored if you’d give it a read.

Possibly. Or customers who used to shop at Belk or Macy's, but were on the bubble and fell to the downside. There is probably more of that.

The wokeness is not helping Target, but I am not at all convinced that it is a major downside factor the company. Target went turbo-powered ultra-woke almost a decade ago. This isn't new, and the shake-out from it is likely more or less complete. Target survived it. Many companies do.

What's probably hurting Target much more is what they said - inflation, and market shifts - but also where Target operates. Wal-Mart is everywhere. They're city, suburb, rural and everywhere in between. It has a broad base. Target does not. Target is urban and suburban. And what's going in urban - and increasingly, suburban - areas? Danger. Physical danger. Danger to inventory, danger to customers. This requires extremely expensive response- more security, more locked-down cases (and therefore more staff to retrieve merchandise for customers), etc. None of that is free, and Target is *completely* vulnerable to it.

Posted by: Joe Mannix (Not a cop!) at May 24, 2024 11:06 AM (d04cU)

13 One thing Target has to look forward to is that they are almost a full year from when sales started dropping, so that the year to year numbers should be leveling out in the next quarter's financial comparisons.

It'd be a real shame if all those investors lost their money. OTOH, I imagine quite a few of us have Target stock and don't know it, because of mutual fund sector investments. I also imagine some of the people controlling those funds have interests other than mine when choosing where to put my money.

Reason I bring it up is that I eventually realized there was no rhyme nor reason to stock market movements. Target having a bad quarter could mean the stock goes down but OTOH, its “basic fundamentals” could be great according to some analysts and the stock could go up.

Then John Stossel had a monkey throw darts at the stock section of the newspaper and was just as good or better than the stock index returns and I concluded it’s all BS.

The market is soaring on two things: inflation, and hope. Valuations are generally pretty high and reality-denial is helping keep it there. This can go on for a long time before people more or less simultaneously decide that the party is over.

My guess - which nobody should listen to - is that when the AI bubble cracks up, the rest of the market will go with it. The last great hope blowing up will be the first charge that sets off the rest.

There isn't a thing at Target you can't get elsewhere. Target is a store to wander around in for a few hours and walk out maybe 50$ poorer.

Even people who want to go to Target can't really afford to do that now because they walk out 150$ poorer.

52 Walmart has its bad points like any other retailer. Having said that, around here I would give them a good to very good rating (1.5 hours away from the home office), and the delivery contractor can't be beat. For most folks, it's simply price. Walmart buys in such a huge quantity and seems to actually pass down savings. Example. There's a sandwich dressing I like, Ohio made, enjoyed it since youth. Any grocery around here sells it for $4, Wally sells it for $2.79. Walmart did go nuts during the Covid hoax, and it probably moved a lot of people like me from in store shopping to on line with delivery.

54 Years ago I kind of had an epilhany at seeing a lot of micro & macro trends. Whether at the nation state level or down to the individual level and everything in between, self-defense against an aggressor is basically outlawed whereever practicable.

I think this starts in Kindergarten. Get attacked by the school bully? Well prepare to get “suspended” right along with the miscreant. Even in the 1980s getting a student expelled was next to impossible.

But we see this same BS in all the laws and regulations and use of force and “proportionate response” and all this red tape in the ROE’s.

“Just die quietly, don’t ask too many questions”. I always avoided certain easy jobs (Pizza delivery, say) because the corporate folks don’t want drivers defending their lives.

55 I shop at Walmart for a couple of reasons.

1. It's a decent "one-stop" shop for my grocery and various sundries I need on a weekly basis.
2. There aren't too many alternatives in my small town.
3. They don't shove the wokeness in my face. They've toned it down A LOT in recent years, probably because of the conservative community in which I live.

Yeah, it's gotten more expensive over the past couple of years, but so has everything else.

That would be a secular move, not a cyclical one.

But I also kind of doubt it. Gen-X is relatively small, and the Millennials are a mega-generation. They're still paying into the system. If the Boomers didn't cause it to fall apart when they started liquidating, Gen-X is in't going to.

But the Zoomers won't have to worry about what will happen when they are the new Gen X - a small generation buttressing a mega-generation - because Alphas (such as they exist, which they don't and the Zoomers barely exist, because the model has played out now) are another small generation. There is no bookending mega-generation to support the Millennials like they can support the Boomer draw-down.

58 On the other hand, I never go tot he mall anymore where I used to shop at Macy's and places like BestBuy. I even order some odds and ends from Amazon that I would normally store shop for. I think the Pandemic completely changed people's shopping habits. Amazon and other internet stores are the ones stealing those profits.

Walmart seems to have figured out online shopping a lot better than many outfits, including Target.

I'm conscious of this because when we lived in Richmond, they were by far the most convenient such store to where we lived. Anyway, it was coming for longer than that.

You pretty much know where things are. Walmart abandoned a couple Neighborhood Markets around here, in small towns. DolGen took them over and they are thriving. There seems to be a bigger picture thing going on, where businesses that used to be almost avaricious in their pursuit of profits, suddenly embraced the Woke. As revenues fall, and even if stores close, I do wonder if it's serving some other purpose that isn't yet revealed (entirely).

Not unlike the embrace of illegals in the last couple decades. As this became a thing, it was sometime mystifying hearing people say this was a good thing, without explaining how.

They're not creeping. They've doubled and tripled like everyone else's since 2020 - the part you are missing is the much of the difference is coming out of shrinkflation, reduced quality, and not just cutting corners on overhead (stocking, headcount, etc) because so much of their market is extremely price sensitive.

I've only witnessed two, but both times the docs did a Sharon Tate on my wife, and that was interesting to see.

What I learned: the anesthesia only works on the surface parts, and when they go poking around in among the fruits and berries (internal organs), it's painful when they push and prod those various parts. I could hear them talking about what they were doing, checking out this and that part, and all the while the wife is going "oww, oww" over and over again.

Catholic Group Sues Biden Administration Over 'Blatant Violation of the First Amendment'

The Knights of Columbus are fighting the Biden administration so a Catholic Mass can be said over the honored dead on Memorial Day at Poplar Grove National Cemetery in Petersburg, Virginia.

Although the tradition of a Memorial Day Mass at the cemetery dates back to the 1960s, the National Park Service under President Joe Biden is now saying religion is against the rules, prompting a lawsuit filed by First Liberty Institute and McGuireWoods LLP to allow the service on Monday, according to a news release from First Liberty

If it's a smaller single-owner business they may just be woke retards. Medium-sized ones are often cases of clumps of moonbats. In both cases they either keep their moonbattery out of the actual money decisions, or they have a captive moonbat customer base, geographically, that will hold up as long as their blue enclave keeps it together.

I am seeing a lot of businesses waving (literal) freak flags shutter. It's not because because wokeness alienated their customers; it's because they and their customers voted for stupid bullshit that is destroying their little blue tumor of a town/city/state.
