Gun Thread: May 26th Massive Rip-Off Edition!

052624 cal pic scaled.jpg

Howdy, Y'all! Welcome to the wondrously fabulous Gun Thread! As always, I want to thank all of our regulars for being here week in and week out, and also offer a bigly Gun Thread welcome to any newcomers who may be joining us tonight. Howdy and thank you for stopping by! I hope you find our wacky conversation on the subject of guns 'n shooting both enjoyable and informative. You are always welcome to lurk in the shadows of shame, but I'd like to invite you to jump into the conversation, say howdy, and tell us what kind of shooting you like to do!

Holy Shitballs! How in the ever-loving Hell did it get to be the Annual May 26th Massive Rip-Off Edition? Weasel are headed to the Farm-O, that's how! Lo siento, amigos y amigas. I made a late decision to head to the farm-o for the long weekend, so naturally all y'all must suffer the consequences in the form of , shall we say, a "content lite" edition. When you read this I will be sitting feet-up under a pine tree sipping a warm bottle of water with an umbrella in it and smoking a cigar.

NOTE: Today is the deadline to register for the 2024 NoVAMoMe. Deadline, as in, the last day to register. Period.

Q: Weasel, can we wait until tomorrow and say we didn't know there was a deadline?
A: No. Well, you can, but it's not going to get you registered and you stand a good chance of disappointing bluebell.

Q: Weasel, is disappointing bluebell ever a good idea.
A: It is not.

Tomorrow we guarantee the headcount to the caterer and that's it. No more registrations or refunds. Hope to see you in a couple weeks!

With that, step into the dojo and let's get to the gun stuff below, shall we?

******

FUNdamentals
Thought content-lite meant no fundamentals, didn't you?

Practice your fundamentals people. Make your next range trip 'grip' day, and practice both good grip mechanics and focus all of your brain molecules on not flinching. I'd like to hear from a few of you next Sunday if focusing on proper grip mechanics as hard as you can on every shot makes a difference. See also the SEH gal video below.

2024 NoVAMoMe

052624 hello-moron scaled.jpg

Note: One of the great joys of NoVAMoMe season, at least for me, is being able to cut and paste the entire block of text below and haranguing you to register for the event. Have you registered? Are you focusing on the fundamentals of registration?

Alright, guys and gals, the long awaited and highly anticipated opening of 2024 NoVAMoMe registration is upon us! That's right, registration for the event of the season is open, which means you can register to attend! You see, in order to attend, you must first register, and then wait for June 8th, and then attend! It's really more of an application to attend based on whether we like you or not, but what have you got to lose?!

Q: Weasel, your world frightens and confuses us. How do we, how do you say, register for the NoVAMoMe?
A: Welp, it's pretty darn easy!

First, check your calendars for June 8th, 2024, and cancel anything already planned. Good so far? Then simply send an email to WeaselBell Productions expressing your interest, then sit back and anxiously wait for a reply. Our pal and most delightful 'ette and MoMe Hostess Extraordinaire bluebell will review your application and relevant permanent record notations to decide if you're NoVAMoMe material. If you're one of the chosen, you'll get a reply with a link and secret password to the registration site containing all the pertinent details. Look these over and complete the simple registration form, following the PayPal link provided at the end of the form to make your payment. The $30 pp fee covers appetizers, dinner (BBQ Chicken, hamburdogs, sides, and dessert) plus an unlimited amount of fun! Since we must guarantee a headcount to the caterer, all registrations must be made online by May 26th. We are not accepting payment for registration at the door. You do not need a PayPal account to register and can pay with any major credit card.

A NoVAMoMe PSA from our pal bluebell

Hi folks - just a quick PSA. If you write for info about the MoMe, please give us a few words in the body of the email just so I know you are a Moron and not a spammer (moron). I do receive spam on this email account because it's sitting right here in my nic, so that's why I'm asking. I don't want to give our details to a spammer. Also, once registered, remember to check your spam folder if you don't receive a confirmation email.

Thanks.
bluebell

Seriously, just send an email, go to the site with the password provided, fill out the simple form, and make your payment. If you forget, a link to the email is on the main page, left sidebar. If you do not sign up, bluebell will be disappointed. Weasel will be disappointed, too, but it's bluebell you need to worry about.

Win a Dream Date with Weasel!
Due to popular demand, we are again conducting a separate raffle for a Dream Date with Weasel This fabulous prize includes an entire day of shooting and personalized one-on-one handgun & rifle coaching and instruction at Weasel Acres on a mutually agreeable date with yours truly. The lucky winner will be able to not only bring and shoot their own weapons, but also try out a variety of WeaselWeapons using WeaselAmmo!

We will end the day with dinner at a good Mexican place in nearby Appomattox. The winner will be responsible for their travel to and from Central Virginia, hence the separate drawing.

Don't be a pathetic girly-man loser, register today!

Q: Weasel, anything else for 2024?
A: Why I'm glad you asked! There are in fact TWO things to mention for 2024.

First, we are again having a pre-party get-together the afternoon/evening before the main event. Details at the registration site.

Dos, we are again offering a NoVAMoMe commemorative mug for 2024 available only to NoVAMoMe participants!

We sincerely hope you can join the festivities. I promise you this event is as laid back and non-anxiety inducing as humanly possible, and nothing makes me happier than to meet new people who have been reluctant to join in the past. If sitting on the sidelines and just observing is your thing, you can do just that with zero pressure from anyone. I hope some of the past NoVAMoMe participants will jump in and share their thoughts on the event to inspire the scairdy-cat lurkers out there to throw caution to the wind and sign up!

That's it, people. Email WeaselBell Productions today!

Here are some different online cigar vendors. You will find they not only carry different brands and different lines from those brands, but also varying selections of vitolas (sizes/shapes) of given lines. It's good to have options, especially if you're looking for a specific cigar.

A note about sources. The brick & mortar/online divide exists with cigars, as with guns, and most consumer products, with respect to price. As with guns - since both are "persecuted industries", basically - I make a conscious effort to source at least some of my cigars from my local store(s). It's a small thing, but the brick & mortar segment for both guns and tobacco are precious, and worth supporting where you can. And if you're lucky enough to have a good cigar store/lounge available, they're often a good social event with many dangerous people of the sort who own scary gunz, or read smart military blogs like this one. -rhomboid

Anyone have others to include? Perhaps a small local roller who makes a cigar you like? Send me your recommendation and a link to the site!

24 Looking to replace my hated Bodyguard pocket backup. Is the Ruger LCP or LCP max a reliable gun? It's one of the least expensive from the options I'm considering. Going to test shoot a few but you can't learn about it's long term quality that way.

Posted by: RI Red at May 26, 2024 07:19 PM (HDGM5)

26 So, this weekend in the range report we have the good, the interesting and the, umm, what's beyond ugly? Hideous?

First, the good: I had the option of shooting steel with pistol or shooting steel with a rifle yesterday. Naturally, I choose steel. With a pistol. The wind sort of made the decision for me. I wasn't all that interested in shooing at a tiny target @ 500 meters in 20mph wind gusts. So, took the 1911 to a steel shootout and proceeded to show some youngsters an old guy can still get the job done.

Now for the hideous. I headed over to another ranged and worked out the Noreen for a bit. Rifle ran great, which was a plus, What was really bad, though, was after I'd emptied both magazine I policed up my brass and found out a bunch of them had blown out primers. This was Creedmor ammo I'd purchased supposedly rated for the M1 Garand. You've no idea how happy I was I found out the ammo was bad before using in a Garand. However, I did not appreciate the fact I had to toss roughly 200 rounds of '06 ammo. But, best I find out the ammo is bad in a gun that can take the over pressure, versus my Garand.

29 Happy Memorial Day weekend Weasel and horde. I am one happy person as Tennessee just beat LSU for the SEC baseball championship (here we come Omaha!) and the NYR beat FL in OT in hockey. Life is good. Was at the range this morning (I like these holidays, no waiting) and I have to say my work on dominant hand pressure is working. Was pleased with the results. Still need to remember to bend at waist and not hunch my shoulders. But progress nonetheless!

30 Looking to replace my hated Bodyguard pocket backup. Is the Ruger LCP or LCP max a reliable gun?

We have a first model LCP. So far, it's eaten everything we've tried in it.

31 Just to clarify, the NoVaMoMe will NOT be a rip-off!

Hit me up if you're interested!

Posted by: bluebell - registration ends tonight! at May 26, 2024 07:24 PM (bS+DD)

32 By the way, blown out primers can be a real headache in the AR platform. I've seen a blow out primer drop into the trigger group and cause a slam fire. No bueno.

Still can't believe the Noreen at the crappy ammo with nary a hiccup. Granted I couldn't hit the side of barn with it but, still, not the fault of the operator or the rifle.

Finally, the interesting: I'mI looking into running a 208 grain Hornady ELD M bullet in the Axis Precision. Oddly enough, the bullet profile is so wildly different than the 178 grain ElD M it appears I will have a longer COAL than the 178 grain stuff. Maybe some more experienced reloaders can clue me in on this?

This goes double (or triple) for those who shoot non-military standard ammo or wildcat cartridges. Keep in mind we have a couple of semi-big shooting affairs going on right now. Vista Outdoors (re-named Alliant Sporting Group) is a key defense contractor supplying gunpowder to the military. Uncle Sam has first call on the limited supply of gunpowder since Uncle is a key supplier to combatants in both of these wars.

70 24 Looking to replace my hated Bodyguard pocket backup. Is the Ruger LCP or LCP max a reliable gun? It's one of the least expensive from the options I'm considering. Going to test shoot a few but you can't learn about it's long term quality that way.

At great risk of getting my dcik hammered, I'm gonna talk Glock, my work gun is a G17. My carry gun is usually a G45 (17 frame/19slide). But, lately I've been carrying a SA35 off work. The damn thing is all steel but weighs about the same as the G45 but only 16 rounds vs. 18 rounds. The SA 35 is very accurate and comes to target very quickly, I added a Dawson high visibility front sight. It carrys real easy in an OWB VersaCarry holster. Go handle one. This is from a guy who has tried them all. I feel like such a glutton.

71 I just bought my first semi auto. I decided to get a Beretta PX4 Storm Compact 40 as it seems to be kinda old school which is my first filter when heading into new territory.

I took it to the local range and put 5 mags through it.

First thing I learned is you grip them different than a revolver. Took some skin of my thumb knuckle. RO brought me a band aide and some badly needed advice.

I kept getting better and better through my short session which is encouraging because I have a long way to go.

It seems like less recoil than my S&W Model 10 38 with P+ which I am very happy about but I haven't shot the revolver in a while.

I changed out the trigger group and put a Hogue wrap around mini grip on it, cured the sharpness. Put white nail polish (or was it Pearl?), on the sights, cured the sight problem.
I have never had a malfunction. It is so small that I never have an excuse not to carry. With me always.

There was a student who shot people back in that day - the infamous University of Texas Tower Shooting. Of course, it was also the presence of lots of good guys who also had guns that allowed other students to return fire and pin him down so the police could take him out.

SEH talks about what you did in her video above. Bet you won't forget that lesson anytime soon.

Is your S&W Model 10 OK to shoot +P ammo out of? I think newer ones are OK to use +P in, but older ones (especially pre-1980s) aren't. If it's an older model, you should 1) stop using +P ammo in that Model 10 ASAP, and/or 2) get a revolver capable of handling .38 Special +P loads (EX: 2017 Colt Cobra) or a revolver chambered in .357 Magnum. Blowing up a revolver w/ overpowered ammo is NOT something you want to experience firsthand.

The Bear Creek Arsenal "Grizzly", their answer to the Palmetto State Armory "Dagger".

While both are pretty much Glock 17 clones, the Grizzly features a very slightly less raked grip angle of only 20 degrees, while still using the Glock 17 mags.

Reviews seem strong on the pistol, and the "right around" $300 price point is attractive.

Wanting to plonk another 9mm or two in the safe, 'cause that'll be a very predominant round in the Burning Times.

I LIKE the .45 ACP a whole lot more. But, there'll be a whole lot more 9mm out there to "liberate", along the way.

134 38 ... "Those of you approaching 29 have been through one or more ammo droughts. Weather reports say we could be approaching another one."

I've mentioned this before. During the last two shortage situations I figured out that three smokeless powders could handle 95 percent of my shooting needs: Unique, Bullseye, and Red Dot. They may not be THE BEST powder for a specific caliber but will get the job done. Most of my shooting, handgun and rifle, is with cast bullets so I don't need atomic level magnum velocities. I also found black powder loads for 38 special, 44 special and 45 Colt. ( I get real black powder by the case so I always have a good supply.)

If I could add Varget at a rational price to the armory, I would.

Always check the notes on that. A lot of the permitless carry has thrown states into that category. It says of Virginia reciprocity with Texas, "(permitless carry, at least 21 years old)". So, it's "restricted" in the sense that it's 21yo, and that reciprocity isn't really necessary.

I think they need to come up with another color for those, and not call it "with limitations."

Caution. Fact with opinion ahead

While the LCP/Max or like pistols like the PPK are adequate, there is little reason not to instead pick the P365. You will find the length, height and weight, mags are very comparable and it’s also 9mm. I abhor the .380 as a defensive weapon choice. Even with the advancements in ammunition, I am not convinced of its efficacy. Nor its penetration and expansion capabilities. I would only make an exception for people who may have some difficulty handling the 9mm for physical reasons.

156 Since I've retired, I had gotten out of the habit of carrying a concealed weapon. What with Eastern Orthodox bishop being stabbed in Australia last month, and 2 unsuccessful attempts at shooting inside churches here in the U.S. in the last few weeks, I've decided that I needed to get back in the habit; especially at church.

I'm currently carrying my old S&W Model 36, .38 Special snub-nose. It's set-up old school with round butt walnut grips plus the Tyler T-grip. I don't think the Tyler T-grips are made any more but they are a nifty invention that gives a little more surface between the trigger guard and butt. I'm not a fan of the big over-sized rubber grips on revolvers intended for concealed carry.

It's a modernized version of the AR-7 survival rifle from the 1960s. You'll recognize it as the rifle 007 has in the briefcase issued by Q in "From Russia With Love." Supposedly, Henry fixed a lot of the reliability problems the Charter Arms versions from the 1970s had. For around $300, it's a decent price.

169 Cannibal Bob, short answer - yes.
Longer: The AR 15 is THE ubiquitous carbine/long arm. Most everyone’s short list is 9 mm handgun, AR 15 and 12 gauge.
For self defense or offense, it will reliably take down targets out to 400-500 yards, yet also work well in close quarters. If you don’t get one, at least become familiar with the manual of arms. Better yet, get one.
If things go down hill, you will want/need one. Or two, for your better half.

With the AR you place the front of the upper in the proper position and push the pin in. Then you rotate it down and push the back pin in. All AR-15s are built that way. (It's also why you can swap out an upper and use a different caliber so easily.)

The AR-7 is a completely different design from that of the AR-15. The AR-7 disassembles so all of the parts can fit inside the buttstock, as famously described by Q to James Bond in "From Russia With Love." You'll have to find someplace else to stash your silencer and IR scope, though. The AR-7 is much more compact (and lighter) than the AR-15. And the stock, w/ all of the rifle's parts inside of it, is water-resistant if it's submerged.

The holster I've ordered is from Falco. They are a Czech company that makes decent holsters for a decent price. The AR-7 predates the AR-15/M-16. According to Wiki (so that means it's obviously trustworthy!!!), the AR-7 came out in 1959. The alternatives would have rather limited.

There is a variant of the M-4 that is prepacked in a "spam can" that can be stored within an ejection seat now. That's been recently developed for the U.S. Air Force.

The Norma had some sort of waxy or oily coating on it that I didn’t care for.

Also American Reloading had some small pistol primers that supposedly have hard cups so they were selling for ~4.5 cents each. Bought two cases, figure maybe they could stand in for small rifle if the cups are too hard.

I can say that it's trivially easy to ring steel at 100 yards with tiny barrels on the MPK and MP5s, and I'd imagine your Sub 2000 is similar. I think a proper rifle round in that platform, even though the velocity won't be quite up to 16" barrel goodness (investigating the 10" might be worthwhile if that's a concern), would be a great in-between if you are on the fence about getting one.

The MP5K/MP5K-PDW are about as compact as you can get w/ a PCC/SMG without getting into something like a Vz 61 Scorpion or Micro-Uzi. And the MP5K/MP5K-PDW are likely more accurate than the Scorpion or Micro-Uzi. The ability of KH9 to fold up can help its compactness, though.

214 I sent an email to CMP Friday, asking if they got my forms for the M1. I'm hoping to hear something so I know my paperwork isn't just lost out there somewhere. I should have FedEx-ed them instead of USPS.

215 I want to say that some big name has come out with a new pistol caliber carbine in the last few months to compete with the $1000 or so Scorpions and such, but I can't for the life of me remember who it is and nothing is coming up in searches.

216 209 Man, I wanted to buy one of those sub-2000s. I passed on it because I don't really need it, it would just be a toy for me, and the money would've pissed off my wife at that particular moment. But I still kinda want one of them.
Posted by: Yudhishthira's Dice at May 26, 2024 09:33 PM (0FoWg)

If you do get one, stick to 9mm. I have a gen 1 in 40 and it is not pleasant to shoot.

217 It's good for people to ask and know which friends are carrying at church. You probably already do, but confirm and choose seating positions accordingly. . .
Posted by: Moron Robbie

Yep - good idea. Our 'Safety Team' has a pretty good idea of who is carrying but, The real issue would be if an incident occurs and LEO shows up. Even though we all know one another, they will not have the time to ID good guys/bad guys by sight alone. Our armed team wears red lanyards to help out with the identification but it is an ongoing concern.

Additionally, all of our doors are locked and manned during all of the services along with parking lot observers. We are all connected by radios. That helps.

218 would be a great in-between if you are on the fence about getting one.

226 For anyone who was following the story: Cow #88 has passed away.

Farmer/rancher Clay Scott did a remarkable job bringing this story to a broad population who otherwise would not know the first thing about what ranchers do day in and day out and giving them a first-class education.

I’ve become a big fan of B&T. They make an excellent platform are very responsive to the needs of their users. The APC is a magnificent platform and that’s where a lot of their .mil stuff really started to excel. The KH9 partially came out of the GHM and was based on a lot of target user feedback. I have no doubt they will continue to improve it.

230 Sword?

231 Wow, when looking for the new PCC I discovered that the Military Armament Corporation name has been bought (resurrected?) and the new company is making MP5 clones.

https://tinyurl.com/28vmsqdo

I don't need one (that role is already filled), but I would possibly consider it if they were under $1000.

If one was offered in .45 I wouldn't think twice.

232 My wife’s carry gun for a long time was the little Sig in.380. LCP came out and she got one for her birthday. When the LCP 2 arrived she got a Christmas upgrade. Her main problem is that her hands are getting just arthritic enough that running the slide on the smaller guns is getting hard, and nothing larger is going to disappear on 4’11” and 98 lbs. The LCP 2 is a tremendous upgrade over the original in terms of feel and trigger pull. We kept the LCP 1 because the trade in was nil.

Check out a gadget called the Handi-Racker. I mean, you're probably not going to carry one around with you but I don't recall the last time I had to rack a pistol except at home or the range.

Get the Hi Point .45 carbine. It's a disposable PCC. Except they seem to go forever. And you can pretend you are on the Planet of the Apes,

Posted by: polynikes at May 26, 2024 10:04 PM (450a+)

246 Ha. I have nothing against Hi Points at all. The one that I've got some familiarity with appears to be built like a brick ****house and I'm told has been reliable as all get out.

I like the small PCC platforms for all-around home defense, though. The short Mossberg is my first choice, but the PCC can hang from a couple of magnets behind the bed at night and not have to worry about navigating doorways.
