The Quotes of The Day

Quote I

“The court will enjoin the sale as requested because, one, the real estate is considered unique under Tennessee law,"

"And in being unique, the loss of the real estate would be considered irreparable harm." chancellor Joe Dae Jenkins

Quote II

“I have every confidence that it’s going to get done,”

“No one should worry, they’re going to be able to vote for the president or the former president, whoever they want to vote for.

“You know, this is not going to be a situation where the president’s name is not on the ballot. Republican Gov. Mike DeWine

Quote III

“One out of every 10 federal student loan borrowers approved for debt relief means one out of every 10 borrowers now has financial breathing room and a burden lifted, Education Secretary Miguel Cardona

The previous quote leads into the perfect story below the fold.

How Victimhood Became America’s Most Valuable Currency

Being a victim used to be a bad thing — something we tried to avoid, and rarely wanted to admit. As a nation, we strove to rise above obstacles and adversity, not wallow in our own self-pity. Yet today the most powerful people in America are the ones who scream loudest about their own victimization.

The Daily Caller’s latest documentary, “Demand for Hate,” exposes how this happened — and how it gave the worst people in America the power to ruin the lives of innocent people. America has now become all too familiar with hate crime hoaxes as the desire to be victimized far exceeds the supply of hate and oppression

So when are the working men and women recognized as victims from the waste, abuse and theft from government?

Self startup restaurants have challenges.

What Percentage of Restaurants Fail? Restaurant Success Rate
Approximately 60% of restaurants fail within the first year of operation and 80% fail within the first five years.

These numbers may seem off-putting, but the remaining 20% of restaurants go on to find long-term growth and success.

Where every cent of $1 goes at one L.A. restaurant, explained

My industry has always been as difficult as it is magical. In the post-pandemic era, challenges are categorically higher.

The threat to restaurants during the pandemic was obvious; it was a given that many wouldn’t come out the other side. In 2024, restaurants are back! No, restaurants are dying! No, restaurants are (sometimes) busy! It is whiplash, day to day.

For many, including my restaurant, Botanica, solvency is more elusive than ever due to the elevated cost of doing business. Since opening Botanica nearly seven years ago, our labor costs have risen 40% for hourly workers and 25% for salaried management, the result of minimum-wage increases and market-rate pay increases. Our rent has risen 17%. Our sales, on the other hand, have grown only 2.3%.

Bizarre crash on Route One leaves driver waiting for answers from Trenton Police

TRENTON — A strange series of events left several damaged vehicles, a fire, and a driver who fled the scene on a busy section of Route 1.

One of the drivers involved, James Green, told The Trentonian that he is still waiting for answers and the accident report from Trenton Police so that he can get his insurance squared away.

Complicating the situation is the fact that the driver who struck his car drove off with his car on fire, then got out and fled on foot.

Techies Build a Carless 15-Minute “Dream” City for the Peasants
By M DOWLING -May 22, 20240

California progressives create the problem of housing with bad policies, and then they come up with an even worse solution. Such is the 15-minute city some tech giants are building. They are trying “to build a dream” in California. Is it a dream or a nightmare?

A secret group is purchasing lots of farmland. As it turns out, the group comprises the richest people in the world. Silicone Valley leftists are buying the land. They have a website called “California Forever.”

Move to California? What are you, fvcking nuts?!?

I don't give a damn about the WNBA. But being a certain type of woman is wrong according to some.

Atlantic writer and ex-ESPN talker Jemele Hill is once again targeting WNBA star Caitlyn Clark and insisting that Clark is only earning her fame because she is a straight white woman.

Clark came off a winning college basketball season and ended her college career by breaking a list of women’s basketball records not to mention doing her part to wildly increase viewership on TV and in person for women’s college basketball games.

After departing her home on Peaceful Lane, Sandra Rodgers "engaged in a verbal argument regarding [the victim's] water usage," investigators report.

MAY 22--Angry about the amount of water her 72-year-old neighbor was using to clean his motorcycle, an 80-year-old Florida woman allegedly spit on the man and yanked on his beard, according to cops who arrested the octogenarian on a felony battery charge.

Investigators say that Sandra Rogers was in her apartment Friday afternoon when she spotted John Faraone scrubbing his wheels. Rogers lives on Peaceful Lane in the 55-and-over Palm Lake Village community in Dunedin, a city west of Tampa on the Gulf Coast.

Manitoba Farmer Gives Away Millions Of Potatoes To People In Need

Today's good news story comes from Manitoba, Canada.

Manitoba farmer Isaiah Hofer faced an unprecedented challenge this year when his potato harvest yielded an exceptional surplus. With nearly 100,000 bags of potatoes—each weighing 100 pounds—Hofer was left contemplating the unfortunate fate of letting millions of pounds of nutritious food go to waste.

37 Victimhood is popular now because it confers virtue on those who claim it (or have it claimed for them). If you're a victim, it means your failures aren't your fault; you have inherent dignity and potential, but were denied the opportunity to demonstrate them.

Much as we blame CRT and Cultural Marxism (and rightly so), the fact is that victimhood speaks to the innate human desire to half-ass everything.

I know the camera is much closer, but the PAK 75 seems much more violent than the 88. I wonder if they reduced the charge on it.

It's because the 88 doesn't recoil. It's firing a blank. The PaK 40 is firing something more than explosive gasses down range.

One time we went to a restaurant - which we had enjoyed previously - right after they changed their menu/service format. I ordered the crab bisque, which had always been quite good in the past.

After one taste, I told Hubby that it "tasted like Butt". Now, I really don't have the first idea what "Butt" tastes like, but believe me when I tell you that if Butt had a taste, it would have been this soup's taste. Kind of like a dirty diaper (the kids were young at the time, so we knew from dirty diapers).

He didn't believe me, so I made him taste it.

He proclaimed that it did, indeed, "taste like Butt".

Restaurant went out of business not long afterward....

199 Not necessarily the end of civilization, just American civilization.

We're just arriving at the turn of the cycle a little earlier.

*SHRUG*

Just as the Western Roman Empire did not so much fall as gave rise to kingdoms that became France, Spain, Portugal, etc., we'll have leaner and meaner polities that center on more important things than allegiance to the Empire.

History has told us ad nauseum that there's something of a maximum efficient scale for countries, especially when something less primal than nationality is necessary to hold the operation together and maintain loyalties.

Besides the sabot or capsule, depending on payload, everything stays on earth.

They did bring some cats on the “vomit comet” flights to see how they would react in a weightless environment. You know how if you drop a cat it always lands on its feet? Well …

Technically, there is no such thing as “Zero” gravity. No matter where you are, you are always under the influence of a celestial body, however slight.

268 I find it interesting that in a rock era where the 35ish Stones of the time were considered amazing dinosaurs that both Debbie Harry and Ric Ocasek, considered fresh young stars of the next generation, were close to the same age, and it was not known among us teens of the time
Posted by: Azjaeger

Harry never married, but shacked up for a while with Blondie's average-looking guitarist, Chris Stein.

Despite being less handsome than me, which is saying something, Ocasek married supermodel Paulina Porizkova. After marriages to two other cute-but-non-supermodel women.

Being in a rock band works better for dudes, I guess.

the chamber of deputies has a lot to say about that. As it is, however, Argentina is mostly unofficially dollarized, everyone keeps savings in dollars and figures prices in dollars, but are forced to make payments in pesos by the government, so everyone takes a bath on the exchage.
However, the black market price of the USD is listed in all the main papers, it is called the Dollar Blue. There is also a foreign price listed, that is the price of the USD in pesos listed in foreign banks, and there used to be a price listed specifically for Montevideo Uruguay.

The directive Milei put down stated that any currency, gold or other form of barter would be sufficient for making binding contract, this was shot down by the Chamber vote.

307 “Rhode Island and California both get two senators.”

I followed a discussion online with the lefty strategist types probably 30 years ago. First they need to get rid of the Electoral College.

Then, this “2 senators” per state business. They really hate that, maybe more than the EC. They allowed that will take a while.

The EC is fast becoming moot. They know how to game the system, by careful strategy, a few key precincts in a few key states, and Bob’s Yer Uncle.

I was always impressed with the old school electoral wonks. Before computers. You could ask them any county in the country, say “Polk County, Iowa” and they could tell you how it went in every election going back decades.

That’s why they parked those guys in the back room on election night. They knew what “bell weather” counties to look at, almost proprietary information, because they knew who the ultimate winner would be at the end of the night, just by looking at a specific county or two. “Uh-oh”….

Sounds quaint now, with millions of unvetted illegals from golly knows where pouring across the border these days, huh?

Foreign nationals could not own radios capable of receiving shortwave broadcasts. All repair shops were required to disable this portion of the radio when it came in for service, if they played by the rules. They were clever about it, which csn cause some headscratching if you run into one of those sets today. Vintage radio repair is a great winter hobby.

He had the executive order voted down, so I think the first step he is taking is to do what he can on the executive side, which includes cracking down on the protests, and getting the people who are suffering under inflation on his side. with what he is doing they have turned inflation down from ~30% to ~3% in five months, and it looks like he is getting traction.
He is an odd duck, he is a very good speaker and so far he has a smart cabinet behind him so far, who are interested in doing what they are doing. Bullrich was a candidate for pres who ran on law and order, so he made her his justice and security minister for example.
His view on dollarization is similar to Jesus Huerta de Soto in that the only benefit to dollarization is that it takes money printing away from the central bank and the politicians. I think he would be happier to use any hard currency or have all of them to set up a market of sorts instead.

In my neck of San Diego, I see announcements on a building for a restaurant, then nothing for months...then the start building up the inside...then nothing for months. It takes almost 2 years from the sign going up saying a new restaurant is coming to when they finally open. Why? I would guess Gov't red-tape. The above talks about "first year of operation", but how many bleed out before they can even open due to Gov't interference?

Japanese had exclusion zones on the west coast. They could pretty much be or go anywhere else. Most people there were in fact citizens of Japan or minor children. Unlike most immigrants those from Japan kept citizenship for home nation legal reasons. The camps were not prisons / POW camps and had job boards if people wanted to leave and wanted a job when they got to where they were going. There are Ansel Adams pics at shorpy dot com that documented this.

However, there was one camp that held those that affirmed their support for Japan. Just like Japan interred Anglos in occupied territory... but were not worked to death.

He said the 88 was a real MFer, because it could be used for anti-aircraft use, or spin it down horizontally and really fuck up your day. He also said the Wermacht were absolute masters of camouflage, very hard to find them.

He was also pissed off about the gunpowder GIs had in the cartridges. It was a fairly dirty burning powder, and made a lot of smoke, giving one’s position away. He said the Germans had a very high quality smokeless powder, and you couldn’t see where they were firing from.

He said another advantage they had at that level of fighting was they had a very, very good NCO corps and made them punch far and away above their weight.

Spain has recalled its ambassador to Argentina because Argentine President Milei went to Spain to talk to a conservative group there, and neglected to talk to the Spanish government, and in his speech he accused the prime Minister's wife of corruption, which was typical of the socialist politician.

And I did the same, though from naught more than a High School Diploma, some intuitive guidance, and an assist from the (then) new, Boston Graphics software suite.

When I "sold" the first T-1 comms line to the Corporate Suite? I HAND DREW the graphics, photographed those with a Kodak film that rendered those as dark blue fields with white text (i forget the nomenclature), and presented the stack as a Slide Show, to illustrate the channelization of 24 lines on a single, twisted copper pair.

$37k for the T-1, and the Mitel T-1000 switch, and associated gear. The CEO told me my ass was on the line. My figures projected a 26 month R.O.I.

It paid for itself in just over SIX months.

One CAN ascend to a Director level position in a NYSE, Fortune 1000 Corporation. Gotta have the right poker hand, and the exact WRONG telcom consultant, as an opponent.

1988, actually. Inside nod. San Antonio, TX was one of the first FOUR cities in the U.S. to get a FIber Backbone in the Telcom world.

Reasons: 1. Hemisfair World Fair '68. They had to have it for the AT&T Pavillion. 2. FIVE major miltary bases then in San Antonio. The critcal one was Kelly AFB, with it's USAF Communications Security Command H.Q., being there. One of THE bedrock crypto and listening post componds, anywhere.

Even regular "base cops" had Shoot to Kill orders for any intrudters inside the first of three barbed wire/chain link fences.

480 Up early (for now) had a message on my phone answering machine that I have won untold riches from Publisher Clearing House. Millions, new car, just call to claim. I didn't even know that organization was still around. I remember the TV ads of them supposedly visiting a house and surprising the people of their winnings. So I will get right on it and call and collect my winnings...../sarc

My brain supplied the "it"--possibly due to some variant of horde mind?

486 Morning, fellow insomaniacals!

I have a dream story involving someone who looked and sounded much like Newt Gingrich. Maybe I'd better save it for the Tech Thread, though.

More worrisome is that last evening, my air conditioning ran steadily and never got the temp below 72. This is bad; if this goes on my power bill will be vicious -- and the heat coming up this weekend will be just as horrible. I'll call the office today, but I have a distinct feeling nothing will be done and I'll have to pay for a service call out of my own pocket. I've been dealing with this nightmare possibility for several years.

On the other hand, the shingles outbreak is just about gone, so there's that.

I don't, and there's no way to get cross breezes either. It's A/C or nothing. The unit *is* cooling, and in fact this am it was reading just a hair under 70 before I edged the needle up. Bit that 70 is only about eight degrees under the outside temp right now.

I could go to Walmart like a lot of my neighbors and get a couple of small window units. But the air here usually works very well; I shouldn't have to do such things.

493 = 492

Posted by: m at May 23, 2024 04:29 AM (hyRRf)

494 ≠ 492

Posted by: m at May 23, 2024 04:29 AM (hyRRf)

495 Wolfus you can purchase a couple of cheap box fans or the pedestal ones and they will help immensely. I keep my thermostat set at 80 and the fans moving the air keep it quite comfortable.
