Not trying to be a contrarian but just bringing up a subject most don’t realize. Being a claims manager I’m familiar with a lot of golf related deaths. Though the rate is low as you point out because of how many rounds of golf are played.

I’ve handled a few lighting deaths, cart accidents and a number of heart attacks. Didn’t handle it but familiar with two others heart breaking claims.

A father and son were playing together when after they both teed off the son decided to hit a mulligan unbeknownst to his dad who started walking of the tee box . The son shanked his shot, hitting his dad in the head killing him.

The other was a foursome . One guy hit a bad drive and wrapped his club around the golf cart . It snapped in two and the shaft speared one of the other player in the jugular.

It's a strip of land about 10 miles long along the Atlantic Ocean. Ocean on one side, a mild bay on the other. Tons of hotels, motels, condos, houses. Bars, restaurants, all kinds of shopping - cheesy beach trinkets and nicer shops too. It's a combo of family vacation spot along with teenage / college age binge drinking and all of the stuff that comes along with that. Can be nice during the off-season, and it's overcrowded and way too much traffic in the summer. If you didn't grow up going there, it probably isn't very appealing.

And probably 100% accurate.

In another life I was working division staff during a wargame - joint forces river crossing was the scenario. Because I was engaged in plotting out effects of dam breaks months before I recognized the topo maps and right off the right flank (and off our std issue mapboards) was a big ass dam that I had modeled a break on...
Advised my Major of this and suggested we confirm the division on right flank secure the dam before proceeding with the river crossing.
He briefed it to the General, who took it under advisement - meaning he asked Corps... whoo-hoo... endex (game over). Must have been The Test.

Posted by: Gmac - WTF did you think was going to happen? at May 27, 2024 07:15 PM (qZdIZ)

At my age, I'm amazed at how few bones I've broken, but then I wasn't in to that kind of thrill seeking when I was younger.

Then I go out in public, see people my age or younger, hobbling around with apparent injuries that didn't heal right, and I think "I wonder if it was worth it, whatever you did."

Maybe I'm just OG, but I don't think you can be an engineer and woke. Engineering deals with facts. Sometimes you don't understand them as well as you needed to, but you learn and adapt. Dogmatism doesn't cut it.

Nor does it on a bridge.

Suddenly I'm remembering the Green Beret dude, Jerry Shriver, who they say was the most feared man in Vietnam. Stories of his exploits are legendary, and if you see pics of him, he looks so ordinary.

I'd say he had issues. In the end, his body was never found. Suicide by Viet Cong.

Similar experience only I was doing IPB for possible enemy LZs in case of a helicopter insertion. Even had them targeted. (REFORGER) The bad guys came. We fired.the.LZs. Then I got asked why we let them fly?
Told them shooting them down wasn't my job, but finding their LZs and hitting them on the ground was. And then I produced the target cards.
The generals left.
