First-World Problems...

ettu baldwin.jpg

Replace the door? Maybe replace the entire front porch?

I ordered a new deadbolt because the old one failed. Maybe I'm just paranoid, but if one can push the deadbolt back into the lock, then maybe it isn't as secure as one would hope!

To its credit, Baldwin sent me a new one. I sent them photos and model numbers, and they sent me...the wrong face plate. Because they don't make the old one any more.

Sh*t. It was cold and rainy when I replaced it, so painting was probably not a good idea. But what this means is that I will have to pull the lock, and reinstall after I sand and repaint.

Maybe I'll just burn the house down and start over...

As I know a little about locks, does seem lately new versions are coming out rapidly, some better not always.
Baldwin are good locks, possibly not installed correctly?

At Ebay or Etsy and at some Habitat for Humanity ReStores (the ones not run by semi corporate ngo types), often have all sorts of goodies like lock faceplates or even entire lock sets salvaged from homes.

Sort of a random walk at Ebay/Etsy for such things. Some Habitat stores accept old house fixtures (usually among other things) while others do not.

28 My first world problem. I bought this house from the builder. He used a lot of composite material for things like the deck and front porch.

Living in a coastal area is tough on wood so the composite stuff is nice in that respect but the stuff is a magnet for dirt and mildew. Every year I have to wash scrub the stuff.

I did discover a cleaning solution called 30 Second Outdoor Cleaner. Stuff is magic.

41 My GF had a deck on the south side of her house and she wanted to clean it up and stain it.
I got the wonderful idea to use a mop to apply the stain, to get it on evenly and not be on my hands and knees all day.

So, I was unaware that some mops are made out of cheap cotton strings, and this of course is the single-use mop I bought to apply stain to a grey weather worn deck. It worked very well, but it left tiny little tufts of stain soaked cotton on every little crack and corner of the decking, and generally looked like there had been a frost in the middle of May.
She merely let me know about it until it all wore away after a couple of years.

===========
Powder graphite or graphite suspended in a fast drying solvent is normally recommended for lock sets and I'd imagine powdered moly might work too and perhaps longer but nastier to clean up.

Graphite is a mild abrasive so over time it will actually act more as a polish to internal parts without causing disfunction.

Regular oil can attract crap such as ordinary house dust/dander as well as pollen, etc. and actually degrade the lock function over time. The worst of that are something like WD 40 which has waxy compounds that harden inside the lock.

WD 40 ain't designed as a lubricant and is only semi useful as a penetrating oil. Best use is to displace water from items so they don't rust or corrode.

An odd FWP. We leased out Delilah's sister Dot to breeders in California so they could get a litter out of her. She's been there for three years and she's never taken, naturally, inseminated or surgically implanted.

We agreed with the breeders that she should come home. Her Majesty was to pick her up in Washington at our National Specialty.

We got a call this week. While they were away at shows in New Mexico, Dot had an oops breeding, luckily to a Borzoi. So she can't come back here until they know she's not pregnant.

79 Years ago I went to update the antique brass doorknobs in my house with oil-rubbed bronze ones, only to find that Schlage had discontinued the locks that worked from both outside and inside. The locks these days allow you to exit the house via a locked door without having to unlock the door first. And if you don’t notice the door was locked and forget to take a key with you, you’ll find yourself locked out of the house. Why? Government regulation via fire codes. Apparently having to unlock a door is too much to escape a fire for some people so these user-unfriendly locks are all you can get.

Thankfully the locking mechanism is interchangeable so I was able to preserve my old locks and swap them into new doorknobs. You can pry these locks from my crispy dead hands.

93 We were a dog/cat household growing up (also birds/fish/snakes/toads) and I've found that the canines and felines will sort out the dynamic on their own. The cats will display the same disdain for dogs as they do humans, and dogs will assume the cats love their doggish chaotic charm like humans do (they don't). There will be snits and fur storms, but they settle down. Just show lots of affection evenly, because they watch and measure pets and scritches.

For some reason - probably "climate change" - our neighborhood has had an explosion of the gopher population. We had one wreaking holy hell in the backyard, where he created a dozen mounds of dirt, all my efforts to catch him coming up unsuccessful. I felt like Bill Murray in Caddyshack.

But then yesterday I looked out and saw that none of earlier mounds (which I'd leveled off) had been revived, and lo and behold, I'd finally trapped and killed the SOB. Peace reigned over the valley once again, my blood lust sated. Temporarily, at least.

Then, let's not have any more failures to communicate.

185 There aren't any first world problems that can't be overcome when you have a hammer, a pry-bar, a come-along and a torch.

186 You can buy a 80 inch TV with a surround sound speaker bar and get the movie theater experience all time. It used to be only attainable by the rich but now you can get that set up for the cost of an above ground pool.

Not even close. A 60 foot screen and 48 channel Dolby Atmos beats any home system. And this coming from someone who built a movie theater in our basement in the mid 70's with a screen and seats that came out of an old theater. Two rows of seats as well. I even constructed the folded horn subwoofers and associated electronics for Sensurround to show Earthquake and Rollercoaster. Stereo with surrounds. My present living room system is very large screen, 400 watts of audio power with JBL studio monitor speakers and a 2 400 watt subwoofers. But, you are still looking AT the screen. You aren't enveloped in it. I compare it to watching a big movie in a properly equipped theater, and seeing the same movie in a drive-in. Same move, but two different impressions.

187 What crime is the prosecution charging?

Posted by: Braenyard

Apparently trying to hide a 'crime'.
It is that 'crime' that they won't reveal and judge has basically told them that whether the 'crime' is really a crime or not is none of their concern.

188 I had two exterior doors changed out. The lock sets were different so I figured out how to change the tumblers to make them match the old ones. Wasn't too difficult.

The true first world problem is the dissolving wood that doors are made out of these days. Our exterior doors only lasted 15 years. The basement door need replacement, but it will wait.

189 Decided to go back to cake shave soap, brush, etc. Got soap and ramkin from Vintage Soaps, an America loving company. Ordered brush and brush stand from Amazon...brush is too tall for stand and to wide for the holder slot.

And I can't grow a beard to save my life, plus CPAP machines don't like them. Take that one!
