30 Looks like what lawyers call an "attractive nuisance." Kids will want to play there, and one of them will get a splinter in his foot or a nail in his hand, and . . .

Still, I like it. To me the location looks more like Kansas or Nebraska with a dust storm coming up; but CT it is if the artist says it is. What's that tower in the background? It appears to be a shorter version of the tower at Chalmette Battlefield (you know, Jackson vs. "the bloody British").

95 Fitting choice. Two days ago I was talking with my brother who lives in my parents' old house. He just hired a contractor to demolish my parent's ancient barn (probably built a hundred years ago). It's pretty decrepit. He's going to replace it with a garage/workshop.

We used to have an uneven dirt surface beneath the hay loft door which had a basketball hoop mounted, probably between 11 and 12 feet off the ground.* It's no wonder I could never play basketball on a level gym floor with a regulation hoop height.

118 I like Atherton's ability to portray the barn but this image would be more fitting for a no man's land landscape in WW I. The drab muddy colors, empty and blighted looking land and overall air of abandonment is rather depressing. (Maybe that was his point.) All that's missing are some bomb craters and dead bodies. Some of his other paintings are almost as depressing. It is such a far cry from Eric Sloane's "Reverence For Wood" that starts with dismantling an old barn in Connecticut that will be treasured for the uses of the wood.

A much more pleasant image is the one on his Wiki page showing a scene of a fishing shack. Same talent but it denotes a treasured past and is still to be enjoyed.

LOL. A woman bitching about "pretty privilege" is perhaps the most hilarious and absurd thing I've heard all week, and it's been a hell of a week.

I have very little knowledge of this person or the WNBA because, like most people, I don't care in the slightest. The sum total knowledge of my knowledge about any of this comes from tangential exposure to press about it. Nonetheless, I've seen enough to offer a free - free as in "gratis" - clue to Sunny. It ain't 'cause she's white, and it ain't 'cause she's pretty (though she seems to be both, and is a WNBA 9 or 10) - it appears to be because, from what little I've seen, she's relatively pleasant.

You, Sunny, are not. You get nastiness demerits. Pleasantness Points, on the flip side, are force multipliers. Give it a thought, toots.

184 Gov. Mike DeWine said he is calling a special session of the General Assembly next week to pass legislation ensuring President Joe Biden is on the state's 2024 ballot. “Ohio is running out of time to get Joe Biden, the sitting President of the United States, on the ballot this fall. Failing to do so is simply unacceptable. This is ridiculous. This is (an) absurd situation,” DeWine said.

I suspect he knows that such legislation can't pass the heavily-gerrymandered GOP general assembly. Typical Repug two-step.

Is this going to be a little shit show? Obviously, the Assembly has to vote to pass this, will they pass it or will the Dems have to hold a quick nominating convention before the deadline? DeWine is up to something (he is a rightwinger after all) but what?

This is all just theater. Biden will absolutely be on the Ohio ballot.

DeWine knows this is a disaster for the GOP if he doesn't insure Joe is on the ballot. It would happen anyhow thru the courts, but this way he deflects any possible damage to the party in Ohio.

Why?

Republicans didn't actively work to keep Biden off the ballot. Democrats simply didn't follow the rules.

They act like Republicans letting Democrats fumble is worse that Democrats actively undermining Trump from getting on ballots.

I suspect it'll pass because Republicans are stupid, but they shouldn't do it. "The rules have been in place for years. Why are Democrats so bad at governing?" should be the message.

Yeah, essentially. There is more to it than that if you want strong efficiency and progress, but essentially just this. The iron law of weight loss is, "Calories Out Must Exceed Calories In." Look up your basal metabolic calorie requirements to maintain your weight, then consume a significantly smaller number than that and keep doing that for months or years. There. You're 80% of your way to your goal.

To amplify, eat better (not just less) and get exercise. Those aren't really optional, but they are subordinate to the basic iron law.

It's amazing watching all of this ancient knowledge presented as amazing new discovery.

I saw on the morning newscast this morning (I watch 2-3x a week as a form of penance and in case something truly important is happening locally) that weight-loss drugs have their fastest-growing market in persons under the age of 25, with the majority of that growth happening for women between 16 and 25.

Astounding. What the hell are these doctors thinking? This is the age at which it is *easiest* to fix things without drugs. Young people are strong and have a natural bias toward health and recovery (generally). There's a reason that young people (especially young men) think they're invulnerable, and it's because they basically *are.* That's their "lived experienced."

What kind of reckless and lazy doctor looks at an obese young person - a person who can (comparatively) easily fix it and build excellent life-long habits through the process - and prescribes a drug instead?

Yes. And I have direct experience here, because I was fat in my 20s, too (not as bad as came later, but I'm not deceiving myself). What I never considered was going to the doctor and begging for drugs. I knew the problem, and it was me - I just didn't deal with it.

If I *didn't* have that attitude and did go begging for drugs, the doctor should have told me, "no. Here's what you should do instead. You can fix this. I'll help you" - and that's what these doctors should probably be telling these young people, too.

I dunno. Maybe the risks and costs of Ozempic are lower than the risks and costs of obesity and the doctors assume for good reasons that the person will *never* self-improve, but handing out weight-control drugs to young adults strikes me as madness.

274 I was fishing along a river in Alaska with a friend. We were wearing chest waders. He stumbled and fell, the waders instantly filled with water. Fortunately he was able to shuck the straps off his shoulders and peel off the waders before he was pulled under.

The bad news, the river was ice cold and he began shivering immediately, threatening hypothermia.
.
The good news: I was able to get him back to the truck, and get the heater going.

The other bad news: He had dropped his fishing poole in the water when he fell.

The other good news: I was able to rig a treble hook and weight, cast out where he had been fishing and snag his line, retrieving his pole.

The really good news: His rig was still intact so I resumed fishing and caught a coouple moroe nice salmon before we headed hoome.

Prob. Nathan Detroit in Guys and Dolls. Since I can't carry a tune, it was fortunate that ND has only one solo song, and he talks his way through it. (The original Nathan, Sam Levene, apparently also couldn't sing.)

Though I have a strong affection for a featured role I had in a graduate student-written and -directed one-act called Gof. There's this Prophet, see, who believes that Gof is the one true God, and on Judgment Day He will "turn the world into a giant pimple, and the sinners will be at the bottom where it's hot and sore." My role was as his monk, known as Monk. I had a great line late in the play: The lights go out, the characters thinking it's the end of the world (though the audience knows it's not). Out of the darkness comes my trembling voice:

"Prophet? Is this what the inside of a pimple looks like?"

Pretty sure everyone, including Putin, knew that on day 1. Putin will be happy with Crimea and Donbas and the CIA out of Ukraine.

I'd be happy with that last part, anyway.

When we learned about New England in fifth-grade geography, I referred to that state as "Connect Then Cut." (Seems illogical to me now, but it was funny then.)

354 Spurlock's health before SuperSize Me. ... was already an alcoholic.

Oddly it wasn't that which blew up his career; it was his weird confession (virtue-signal?) that he might have raped someone in college. Except that no woman showed up to say "yeah that was me". Just completely bizarre.
(Compare SC Justice Kavanagh; 1400 women accused that guy.)
As to the cancer, nobody's telling us what it was, but I assume liver. Early 50s is when the cancer fairy visits boozers, based on fundraisers I see here and there.

As if the holder of pretty much every NCAA record, keeping in mind she could have played another year, wouldn't get press going Pro.
I mean, I know it's super common for woman's sports to forgo the final year of eligibility...
I mean, maybe it is, but somehow I don't think that's super common.
