22 This is my image of a den or study. I'd have a big computer screen instead of a canvas over there on the left, and probably some blinds or drapes on the window -- but this is a very appealing layout.

If it were in the artist's basement, there wouldn't be windows. This must be the ground floor of a two-story house.

I wonder what's in the little curtained alcover behind the artist?

"Although he had exhibited his works with some success, by the early 1930s his neurotic behavior and reclusiveness had alienated him from the gallery world. In 1937, Ault moved to Woodstock, New York with Louise Jonas, who would become his second wife, and tried to put his difficulties in the past. In Woodstock the couple lived a penurious existence in a small rented cottage that had no electricity or indoor plumbing. Depending on Louise for income, Ault created some of his finest paintings during this time, but had difficulty selling them. In 1948, Ault was discovered dead five days after drowning in the Sawkill Brook on December 30, when he had taken a solitary walk in stormy and dark weather. The death was deemed a suicide by the coroner."

Posted by: Corporal Schiklgruber [EK] at May 22, 2024 09:47 AM (gKWVE)

82 This is a work made astonishing by how appalling it is. This is extremely triggering due to how much it underscores the toxic patriarchal impulses that define our history and the level of objectification of women it exhibits.

Here we have a faceless man who feels entitled to adorn his home with neutered symbols of feminine power. The prurient nude above the stairs exhibited for the benefit of the Male Gaze under the guise of "artistic expression" is least of the problems. Objectifying as it is, that nude is at least a woman.

The statue under the window at the foot of the stairs is simply horrifying for its implication. It is merely *part* of a woman, the part of interest to men. It is breasts, womb and genitals. Nothing more. It is not a depiction of a person carved into stone, it is the representation of an object, expressed as an object. It reduces the feminine form to sexual and reproductive components. The woman is not a woman. She has no mind (no head), no independence (no limbs), no *agency.* It is revolting and truly the stuff of nightmares.

Nobody should be exposed to this outside the context of understanding the horrors of patriarchy and promotion of art equity.

You could *get* booze during the Twenties. It wasn't illegal, as far as I know, to buy or consume it. Manufacturing, transporting, and selling it was the crime. I expect a lot of people who'd had the occasional beer prior to 1920 decided, "Hell, if they don't want us to have it, I'm by Gawd gonna buy it!" and drank more than they had before Prohibition. (Not to mention the chance of blindness or death from wood alcohol mixed into some of the libations.)

Prohibition did more to decrease U.S. citizens' respect for law and government than anything had before it.

Posted by: redridinghood

Yes, thank you. NBC News, Channel 10

At least two people were killed and three others were hurt in a workplace shooting in Chester, Pennsylvania, Wednesday, two law enforcement sources told NBC10.

Officers were dispatched to West 4th Street -- near Hayes Street -- around 8:30 a.m., Delaware County dispatchers said.

Delaware County Linen operates out of the location police responded to. The family-owned company serves other businesses with laundry services and linen rentals and sales.

Police sources later said that at least five people were shot and two had died. The suspected shooter is a former employee, sources said.

Expect a large police presence to continue in the area as police in other departments said there is a county-wide response to the scene.

Eh, songwriting and arranging, yes. Actual voice, not so much but when you are the writer--you can write for yourself to what fits your vocal abilities which Pete did. The demos by Pete for the band of the various songs indicate just what the other three added to Pete's song ideas and where they deviated from the original.

Daltrey had probably one of the longest runs as far as being able to do his Who vocals well into the 2000's but then he took care of his voice.

Their first 3 albums are awesome. After that, not so much. The drummer (Butch Vig) is also an incredible producer. He essentially made Nirvana into what they became. The original demo of Smells Like Teen Spirit was a forgettable, garage-band sounding song. Butch Vig took that song and the rest of their early songs and made them great.

On the one hand, they're borderline insane. The hardcore ones, the people that've been doing this shit for years are actually doing science, to one degree or another. They take measurements, make meaningful observations, etc. The video referenced above with Reed Trimmer... he was the first person to launch a sounding rocket into a tornado to get wind, pressure and other measurements. That's pretty cool.

Many of the others are just thrill seekers. A number of them are killed every year chasing storms. Mostly in automobile accidents and not something directly related to the storm/tornado they're chasing.

In a later show on youtubz when Simon is touring with Roger playing old Who songs about a decade ago, Simon sings Goin Mobile which apparently Pete refused to perform on stage period.

Pete has an interesting voice if not particularly strong but you can tell where he took some vocal cues from Daltrey in his personal work since about mid nineties.

What I find interesting is that Pete purposefully downplayed his guitar playing in Who albums but his demos reflect more lead work instead of his rhythm and acoustic background work for much of the Who's halcyon years.

One of the interviews, post Entwistle's death, got Pete a lot of criticism because he noted that Entwistle nor Moon kept time in the band. That was more a musician commenting than a criticism but it caused a huge backlash from Moonie and Ox fans. Essentially Pete relegated himself to timekeeper on a lot of classic Who songs.

354 Jacobin, May 19, 2024, Spain’s Socialist Party is Europe’s strongest center-left force, easily winning last Sunday’s Catalan elections. But it’s gaining at the expense of its own coalition partners, whose weakness risks bringing Pedro Sánchez’s broad-left government to its knees.

(In part) The Left, broadly defined, is in clear decline across Europe — while the Right, especially the far right, is thriving like it hasn’t done since 1945. Ahead of June’s European elections, the trend is unmistakable: social democrats, greens, and other left-wing parties are set to lose around forty seats in the new parliament. After the fall of the Partido Socialista prime minister António Costa in Portugal, Spain is today the only European Union (EU) country with a meaningfully left-wing government. While other governments may appear “progressive” on paper, such as Slovenia’s, many are either grand coalitions (like Denmark’s) or lean more toward the center than the left (like Germany’s). Events in Spain, then, are more decisive than might be imagined.

you're not going to go from Comus to Garbage Monster to Test Department indefinitely. You'll be moved to the ones that are created stars eventually. That's how they create stars.

Imagine starting out mainstream and how easy it is to reinforce the stars.

Harrison probably ended up being the musician post Beatles and was a pretty popular guy in rock land because he could poke fun at himself and the Beatles mystique. Ditto for Ringo.

McCartney never could nor could Lennon most of the time. The hysterically funny but biting lyrics of the Magical Misery Tour song, that was on National Lampoon Radio Dinner, was all basically from interviews that Lennon gave to the press post Yoko mating. I'm sure that Lennon did not lend a hand to that effort.

Proxy adviser Glass Lewis last week recommended that shareholders reject Exxon’s lead independent director Joseph Hooley’s re-election, citing “unusual and aggressive tactics” against activist investors.

Majority Action, a leftist outfit, is also prodding institutional investors to oust CEO Darren Woods and Mr. Hooley for “attacking shareholder democracy and failing to address climate risk.” Far from protecting shareholder rights, these agitators want to punish Exxon and its investors for refusing to surrender.

This just isn't right. She *way* predates streaming and there was that whole kerfuffle with Spotify where she ditched the platform because it didn't pay as well as album sales (until streaming finished displacing the albums market, anyway). Or the four-figure ticket prices that still sell out.

She hit like a bomb at contemporary country's upswing, flawlessly shifted into pop, and her label has shown itself to be unbelievably skillful.

Plastic junk? Researchers find tiny particles in men's testicles
MAY 22, 2024, 8:07 AM ET

In part, "We're just at the tip of the iceberg," says Campen, who has used this same technique to quantify the levels of microplastics in other tissues and organs.

The amount in the testicles is considerably higher than what was discovered in placenta, and second to what they observed in the brain, says Yu.

Exactly how the microplastics are making their way into the testicles requires further study. Campen suspects they could be "hitchhiking" through the gut via tiny fat particles that get metabolized and then fan out across the body."
