It's Memorial Day Weekend!

Poppy-sprng.jpg

It's not spring without poppies

Good Morning! Do you have plans for the Memorial Day Weekend? There's still time to make some plans.

This is not the Gardening Thread, but partly due to an unusual occurrence last week and partly due to Spring, we have extra flower photos from The Horde, including Red, White and Blue flowers from Don in Kansas, who has been busy with his camera. Aren't they gorgeous?

Powerline has one of their fleeting links up to this piece, Reflections on Memorial Day, Mackubin Owens

In 1998, I was invited to deliver the Memorial Day address at Newport City Hall. In my address, I sought to recur to the true meaning of the holiday. Memorial Day, I said, had unfortunately come to signify little more than another three-day weekend, which had obscured even the vestiges of its intended meaning: a solemn time, serving both as catharsis for those who fought and survived, and to ensure that those who followed would not forget the sacrifice of those who died that the American Republic and the principles that sustain it, might live.

Americans, I contended, had forgotten how to honor their war heroes and to remember their war dead. As my friend and fellow Marine, "Bing" West observed several years ago in his remarkable book about Fallujah, No True Glory, stories of soldierly courage deserve "to be recorded and read by the next generation. Unsung, the noblest deed will die."

I noted that what we now call Memorial Day was established by General John A. Logan's "General Order No. 11" of the Grand Army of the Republic dated 5 May, 1868. This order reads in part: "The 30th day of May 1868 is designated for the purpose of strewing with flowers and otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country during the late rebellion, and whose bodies lie in almost every city, village and hamlet churchyard in the land." Logan's order served to ratify a practice that was already widespread, both in the North and the South, in the years immediately following the Civil War.

. . . The inconsolable pain and grief of the mother of my fallen Marine with whom I corresponded put me in mind of Rudyard Kipling's poem, Epitaphs of the War, verse IV, "An Only Son": "I have slain none but my mother, She (Blessing her slayer) died of grief for me." Kipling too, lost his only son in World War I.

But as Oliver Wendell Holmes said in his Memorial Day address of 1884,"[G]rief is not the end of all. I seem to hear the funeral march become a paean. I see beyond the forest the moving banners of a hidden column. Our dead brothers still live for us, and bid us think of life, not death -- of life to which in their youth they lent the passion and joy of the spring. As I listen, the great chorus of life and joy begins again, and amid the awful orchestra of seen and unseen powers and destinies of good and evil our trumpets sound once more a note of daring, hope and will."

So by all means, have that burger this weekend. Enjoy the barbeque. Go to the beach. But also take some time to watch Taking Chance and remember to honor those who died to make your weekend possible.

The entire piece is worth reading and considering during this weekend, especially if you have young people around.

Memorial Day Weekend Events

Are there still events commemorating Memorial Day in your area? The Central Valley of California is one area where such community events are still observed. Flags, ceremonies, concerts . . .

Random Observations

Ace included a tweet from Nellie Bowles in his Great Withering of Humankind post yesterday (which some people are bookmarking for later consideration).

Nellie Bowles is not exactly a conservative, but she has been moving toward the right. Not totally, for sure.

David Mikics wrote in Tablet:

Good progressives are tossing the heady days of wine and wokeness down the memory hole. Lucky for us, there was a witness.

Remember the heady days of 2020? Progressives trained by the richest universities in the land suddenly had the chance to remake America in their image, the way they had always dreamed of doing. The result was so obvious and crushing a failure that one is no longer supposed to talk about it.

Four years later, the power elite have discovered that their cosplay revolution is seen as merely ridiculous. Minority groups don't want the new names that have been issued to them. Straight people prefer not to be called cisgender, and gay people don't like being submerged in a tide of heterosexuals who style themselves queer. Even The New York Times, that high conclave of official euphemisms, has begun to soft-pedal chilling locutions like "gender-affirming care for minors," instead referring honestly to puberty blockers and body-altering surgery.

Nellie Bowles' Morning After the Revolution is a grand tour through the craziness that followed the killing of George Floyd and continues to this day, despite the majority of Americans shaking their heads in bewilderment. Bowles, a former Times reporter, started out as a progressive seeker, curious and hopeful about the new thinking, and she is still seeking solutions to racism, income inequality, and attacks on women's rights. But she also sees the absurdity of much of what passed for progressivism, yet was actually narcissistic, neo-racialist, and aggressively inhumane.

*

Nellie Bowles has a sense of the ironic:

But to Western elites, anyone who hates us a lot is. . . kind of hot right now. If he's chanted Death to America, we're into him. If he kills thousands of dissidents as part of a fundamentalist religious revival, that's him really putting ancient indigenous values into practice.

How's that old Patriarchy doing in the USA?

Steven Hayward:

It is dogma among radical feminists and the identity politics brigades that America is in the oppressive grip of The Patriarchy. It would seem this is obsolete information (I know, facts have nothing to do with anything--"facts" are an oppressive white male construct, like "objectivity"). From our irrepressible pal Mark Perry:

When the site came back up, Tom Servo said,

I waited all day to make some incredibly pithy and insightful comment on this thread, but now I forgot what it was. It was really good, though.

Seriously, I hit 100K miles and got all the regular stuff done last year. They upgraded me from back end to both ends. They only go a few feet, not all the way.

Of course my comedy-spidey-senses told me there was a joke in there waiting to be found, but I did not find it.

I’m a Baptist with great respect for the traditional Catholic Church…. But I look in befuddlement now as I never thought I’d see a non-Catholic pope nor statements like the one made by those sisters. I have a good friend who is a lay member of Opus Dei and of course he won’t be critical of the church but I sense his unease….

17 Ace put up a post a few years ago, and I'll never forget it, because it was so prescient. In this constant scrum between left and the so-called right, the left always puts up something, and the right always reacts to it.

It's been observed the so-called conservatives never actually conserve anything, because whatever it is, there's always movement to the left, no matter how much harumphing the so-called right is doing over the latest thing.

What has the R party been for, these past couple decades, other than perpetual war? They haven't stopped the left, they sure as hell don't ever roll back any of their gains.

Whenever I hear the latest outrage, what Woke is doing, that's the first thing I think about... what is anyone on the so-called right actually doing about it.

22 The lily has a smooth stalk,
Will never hurt your hand;
But the rose upon her brier
Is lady of the land.

There’s sweetness in an apple tree,
And profit in the corn;
But lady of all beauty
Is a rose upon a thorn.

When with moss and honey
She tips her bending brier,
And half unfolds her glowing heart,
She sets the world on fire.

23 Carried forward from the prior thread regarding the question of intervening on aging neighbors:

There was a certain old woman who lived near our cabin, at 8,600 ft elevation in the Sangre de Cristo mtns. She was widowed, a retired NYC school teacher who had lived there for 30 years. We first met her in her 70's and she died at 91. In her later years she would park her car at the highway gate and hike the half mile to her cabin when the snow was too deep to drive. She would drive to town about once a week, going a cautious 40-45 mph on the highway. She was garrulous and eccentric but did not have debilitating dementia per se. Some of our neighbors conspired to steal her car keys and hide them from her. They insisted that she move into town to an apartment for the winter, and went so far as to arrange a place. She steadfastly refused and continued to live at her longtime home in the hills. She was found dead on her couch at home one morning by the oxygen delivery guy. This was her long-stated desire.

She died on her own terms and we respect her for that

26 Thanks for posting the info on the meaning and purpose of Memorial Day. While it's always appreciated by veterans to hear "thanks for your service" etc, Memorial Day is SOLELY to remember those who gave the ultimate, made the highest sacrifice. If thanks to the living are to be made, it goes to the parents, families of those fallen. Hate to see fliers/ads that offer discounts to veterans, etc, just helps to muddy up why it exists. We have Veterans Day for that you lazy uninformed ad firms.

How prevelant is this though? I know this is conventional wisdom. All the THOTs etc. But is this really the typical young woman?

I really don’t know and I’m too old to know this stuff first hand. But my thinking is the stereotype applies to a small handful of social media personalities and is not typical of your average 23 year old woman.

54 When I moved into my house the standard roses were poking along since they had been neglected for so long, and the climbing roses and the moss roses were tangled thickets.
I ignored them other than to mow around them and they started to get choked out. I finally decided to care for them, and they have bounced back. Several of them are now covered with blossoms, and one small yellow rose is actually flowering this year.
With luck I can get the yellow rose sorted out and make it big and sturdy instead of the vine-like plant it is. I know there are different types of roses, this one I suspect is old fashioned. However, they all respond well to rose food, and an extra blast of epsom's salt in water.

I am trying to root some cuttings, and to date I have failed.

70 Kindltot. Yep, gave up on the fancy planting of potatoes. Put them in the ground, water them and harvest. Only doing fingerlings this year. Also, have had zero luck fussy planting asparagus, buried 3 year old crowns below ground level and am watering. We shall see. I never had asparagus until dad picked it along the cemetery fence line. If it grows wild how difficult can it be to grow?

How prevelant is this though? I know this is conventional wisdom. All the THOTs etc. But is this really the typical young woman?

I really don’t know and I’m too old to know this stuff first hand. But my thinking is the stereotype applies to a small handful of social media personalities and is not typical of your average 23 year old woman.

110 For me, Memorial Day will always bring up a memory of something I saw by chance years ago. We were on vacation and driving through Kansas in the morning, a nice sunny day. We came through a small town just like a thousand other midwestern towns, and there was a small cemetery on the outskirts, as they all have. As we drove by I noticed an older gentleman had parked his pickup there and taken a lawnchair in, and he was just sitting there quietly by himself under a tree, next to a grave.
I don’t know anything more about him or the grave; I don’t need to. That to me is what Memorial Day is all about.

about 2005 the vineyards locally started using propane "guns" to scare the birds off the grapes. they were a metal T with an igniter and a slow bubble of propane from a cylinder that fired intermittently. .
When I saw those going in, I blessed my lucky stars that they were not put in when I was in high school when I was really dumb since my first instinct was to put potatoes in both ends and see if they would shoot.

Two in the real world. One was very good, easily in the top 10% that I've known. Had and raised three kids at the same time. The second had a good heart, tried mightily, but I had to guide her designs to make schedules. If I left her on her own, it would get done, but usually late.
