Top Story

Qualcomm is bringing support for its upcoming Snapdragon X CPUs to Linux, and by "is bringing", I mean "has brought". (Liliputing)

I hope these chips are as good as they seem on paper. They'll likely be slower than Apple's M4, but you'll be able to buy them and do whatever you want with them, without paying a 1200% markup on RAM upgrades.

You can run Linux on Arm-based Macs too, but Apple's involvement in that project only goes as far as not suing the people working on it.

Tech News

Samsung and Hynix have stopped making DDR3 RAM, focusing instead on the far more profitable HBM3 modules for AI systems. (Tom's Hardware)

I didn't know they were still actively producing DDR3 memory. It's available for sale, but since DDR4 appeared in 2014, I assumed that was just old stock they couldn't shift.
VMWare's Workstation and Fusion desktop virtualisation packages are now free for personal use. (The Register)

These are generally pretty good, though I don't know how much effort Broadcom will put into updating them going forward.

10 Next Monday, May 20th, Microsoft is rolling out It's Qualcomm based Surface Pro 10 and Surface laptop 6. I also think the other PC vendors will be officially rolling out their Qualcomm devices on that day are shortly thereafter.

Unlike Microsoft's previous outright failures or half baked measures to bring ARM based computing to Windows, these Qualcomm CPUs based on leaked performance information and leaked road maps over at Dell look like they're going to crack into the x86 world in a spectacular way. I for one am looking forward to my new Qualcomm overlords taking over.

I watched season 1, and it was good enough to get me to pick up the first book, and then the remaining 13 books. Tried to re-watch season 2, and couldn’t get through it. The show runners really don’t understand the characters that RJ created.

90 I was stationed near Oxford, UK. Beautiful city with lots to see. Went there quite a bit because it was close and nice. It has lots of things to see for nerds, so right up my ally. Also, a decent nightlife. Many pints were drunk.

It's worse. The showrunners actively *despise* the characters--especially the main male characters of Rand, Perrin, and Mat. They did everything they could to destroy those characters in the Amazon series.

149 Yesterday, too, I finally got my Valtrex Rx at the Walgreens staffed by arrogant idiots and have been taking it. Maybe it'll work on the shingles outbreak. About the only thing that's itching now is the bit of rash on my lower stomach, the most recent appearance, so maybe the older stuff will quiet down.

I don't really want to go to this dinner tonight. I didn't anyway -- but especially not now. Though the thought of two lovely days off, and then a weekend, afterward is enough of a shining star to keep me going.

My meeting is Friday at ten, and our staff meetings, though set to be an hour, usually mushroom into ninety minutes. The reason our boss is letting us work from home is that graduation is happening on Friday and Saturday. We've been warned that traffic and parking will be very bad on those days. I didn't believe I was under that much stress, not like there will be once I retire and really start the prep for moving. More like a cool $1 billion. They paid $250 million to Tolkien's estate just to get the rights to the notes at the end of "The Lord of the Rings". It is said they paid WB for additional rights.

And that's before spending tens of millions per episode for the first season. But they signed a 5 season contract They blew past half a billion a long time ago.
