THE MORNING RANT: The Ivy League Endowments’ Liquidity Crisis May Be Worsening
The liquidity crisis at Harvard and other Ivy League schools may be getting worse. I first wrote about this two months ago: “Harvard’s Endowment Is Having a Cash Crunch” [Buck Throckmorton – 3/08/2024]
But Harvard is sitting on a $50 billion endowment. How much could it hurt Harvard to lose an incremental billon or two? The answer is, it could hurt a lot. It did hurt Harvard immensely. While the endowment may be valued at $50 billion, it is apparently not weighted very heavily toward liquid investments such as stocks and bonds. Therefore, Harvard relies on the mega-donors’ recurring giving to provide the cash to pay the bills. When those donors closed their checkbooks, Harvard found itself in an asset-rich but cash-poor situation. So, despite its massive endowment, Harvard finds itself having to rush a bond offering in order to raise the cash needed to keep the lights on.It was announced in February that Harvard University was floating a $1.65 billion bond offering, choosing to take on over a billion dollars of debt to maintain the cash liquidity it needs to operate the university, since not enough fresh cash is flowing in. The intention was to raise $750 million with a taxable bond sale through Goldman Sachs, and another $900 million of tax-exempt bonds to be issued by the state of Massachusetts. In March, Harvard successfully raised the $750 million on Wall Street, and it received authorization from the state of Massachusetts to raise up to another $2 billion in state tax-exempt bonds There was not an investor appetite, however, for anywhere near that amount of Harvard debt. Ira Stoll wrote last week that only $735 million could be raised in the state bond sale, bringing the all-in amount raised to about $1.48 billion. Harvard fell $165 million short in its effort to borrow the cash it needs.
Yet the investor appetite for Massachusetts tax-exempt bonds backed by Harvard apparently turns out to be on the low side of what Harvard was aiming for, at least at the non-distressed or non-“junk” yields that Harvard is offering to pay lenders. A document posted with no fanfare on Harvard’s bondholder information website this week after I inquired with the Massachusetts Development Finance Agency about the fate of the bond offering lists the amount of the offering as $734,995,000. That’s a mere 36.7 percent of the $2 billion that the state approved, and it falls more than $165 million short of the $900 million number touted in the regulatory filing and the alumni magazine article.Much of Harvard’s newly raised cash is being borrowed simply to pay off maturing bond debt issued at lower interest rates, as well as rolling over other short-term debt.
Even the $734,995,000 sum overstates the amount of new money available to Harvard as a result of the bond offering. Of that, $356 million is being used to buy other Harvard bonds that were issued in 2016. An undisclosed additional amount is also being used to refinance commercial paper—short-term debt. There’s also a $120 million “premium.”Not that I’m questioning the legitimacy of Harvard’s illiquid investments or the integrity of those managing it, but one might wonder about the “investment strategy” of Harvard’s famous endowment if it is so illiquid that even with several years lead time to prepare for bond maturity, its other investment assets cannot get converted to cash to pay off maturing bonds. With my own finances, I would not consider any of my cash that is “invested” and then becomes permanently unrecoverable to actually be an investment. Charles Gasparino is reporting that word on Wall Street is that the liquidity crunch at Harvard and other Poison Ivies is getting quite serious.

These endowments rely heavily on private placements, which often take years to accumulate the big payoffs that are promised, instead of investing in bonds. They may not be able to pull the funds early, and if they can do so, they will take a huge hit.
Imagine putting money into a CD, and the early withdrawal penalty is losing part of your principal as well as any return, and that is the scenario.

Schadenfreude aside, I wonder whether any college has factored in the likelihood of events that might cause a large drop in donations in their endowment's investment strategy. Sure would be interesting to see a bunch of colleges with assets in the several dozen billions to shut down because they can't run their facilities for lack of money.

And bailouts can only stem the tide. Every preposterous bailout they do makes the dollar more worthless and makes the next bailout even more impotent. Not to mention further fanning the flames of resentment now smoldering inside the average normie these days. It's a vicious cycle they can't escape. It's basically Revolution or bust for them, and they just don't have the balls or the manpower for a proper Revolution. They can make life quite miserable for a while, though.

If you are relying heavily on alumni and corporate donors to have enough cash-on-hand to keep the lights going at a university, then you are doing something very, very wrong.
Supposedly that's what tuition and fees are for.
Donations should go to fund activities that cannot be funded any other way, such as large capital projects, or special research activities.

Target recently announced they are not doing the pride month clothing thing anymore. Bud Light sales have taken what appears to be a permanent hit and of course the head of that cluster was fired. The NFL is no longer kneeling and CK is not a thing anymore.
Take victories and keep pressing. Expecting the world to do a 180 when we have allowed them to spend decades taking over the institutions is never going to happen. Win battles until we win the war.

Yes, bonds normally have fixed interest payments, so when interest rates rise, the value of the bond decreases. That way, if you want to earn 5% on a bond with a 4% coupon, you would offer to pay less than the face value.

The more I watched the more irritating it was because you begin to realize that all of the guests are ABC employees, and that one commercial on the show would cost $50K or so, that everything donated is a write off for ABC or the celebrities, and that even the B-list celebrities are worth $15M+ and the "donated" totals are, as a percentage, like any of us putting a couple of hundred dollars in a fundraising pot or church plate once.
While ABC sells thirty commercials and the celebrities advertise their shows.
Yay.

There may also be considerable overstatement of the value of their endowment. Private individuals donating are inclined to inflate their in kind donations to the maximum the IRS will let them get away with via step up differences between the original cost and the subsequent rise in value. As a result, donations values may be quite distorted from the actual value if put on the marketplace today.
Then there are all sorts of entailed donations where the income from the donation must go to the specific purpose such as an endowed professorship or scholarships. Depending on the way it is set up, the school might be more like a manager of those entailed donations.

So what? I am 68 years old, about to retire, and have been paying into 401K, IRA, etc for about 38 years. Bought and sold a couple of houses, and my wife sold the house she inherited from her deceased parents, and put some of that money into our present house.
The accumulation of 40-50 years of acquiring assets.
We are comfortable, but not rich. I know really rich people. They're different. They have a lot more money and liquidity in their assets.

MIT offers many of their courses online. I don't know if you can earn credit for them though.
Here's an idea - have some sort of feature whereby if you do well the institution (and society at large) considers you competent in that discipline. We could call it a 'test' or 'exam'.
If you do well, you're qualified. Whether or not you paid anyone for the priveledge of spending four years there.
That would be fun.

I am anti-both and probably a little clueless, but I listened to the ESPN eyewitness of the incident (posted by redridinghood on the MR)… he talked for about 10 minutes describing what took place.
The golfer was in a PGA marked car and was told he could enter the course (prior to actually driving there)
The police car and policeman were not clearly marked; they could’ve easily been mistaken as event security
Pro golfers routinely at ever event drive around security vehicles to get into the course; security is to keep civilians out, not the golfers obviously
Scheffler made a mistake assuming he was maneuvering around security as he’s done dozens if not hundreds of times
The cop overreacted big time; per eyewitness Scheffler never yelled etc…. He was almost certainly stunned and confused

This will be an interesting topic to explore when I go to my alma mater, M.I.T., for my 50th reunion at commencement at the end of this month. If you follow the news you'll have seen that Pres. Kornbluth finally sent the cops in to clear out - permanently - the encampment there, and likely dozens of students have been sanctioned. Some have been banned from non-academic activities. Some have been banned from campus altogether, including having to move out of their dorms to whatever off-campus non-Institute owned/operated housing they could find. The timing is such that those people can't take their semester finals and, if seniors, can't graduate. Having to re-take a semester at M.I.T. ain't cheap. And those are interim penalties. All of them have been referred to the Committee on Discipline and could end up being formally suspended or even expelled.
I should note that unlike at Harvard, Penn, and other schools Pres. Kornbluth has her degrees in a physical science, not "gender studies" or some other such blather, and has done valuable research in them. These actions will likely save her job.

do a version of this - when I hear "that is insensitive" I pretty much immediately ask, why? Why is it insensitive? ANd then force an answer out of them. I'm surprised they were able to get anyone to invest in the bonds-- if the leadership doesn't change, Harvard's financial problems are only going to get worse. Is the gamble that the bonds will be backed by the endowment as collateral? So, not really a risk.
I thought part of the issue with the endowments is that many of the bequeathments were for specific purposes restricting those funds from being used for things like keeping the lights on, salaries/personnel unrelated to the bequeathment.
