The Proper Order Of Things Is Often A Mystery To ONT

Hello everybody! Welcome to Thursday night. Everybody get LOUD!

Meet the First 'Space Cowboys': 3 Guardians Complete Arduous Army Cavalry Spur Ride

After being covered in dust, sweat, dirt and blood, three officers emerged from the West Texas desert last week and were given their spurs and Stetson cowboy hats by the Army, becoming the first ever "space cowboys."

The three Space Force Guardians traveled to Fort Bliss in El Paso, Texas, to complete an Army Cavalry Spur Ride, a series of arduous combat tests and physical training exercises in which service members often ruck-march in between challenges -- the first members of the military's newest and smallest service to do so.

Space Force Capt. Bradley Evans, an engineer at White Sands Missile Range who took part in the Spur Ride, told Military.com that all of the Guardians who participated completed the challenges, though some Army soldiers didn't make it through.

TIL that members of the Space Force are called Guardians. Also, imagine being one of the soldiers who didn't finish. I bet their friends never let them forget.

Language Lesson

I think I caught a word or two in the Old English section. Question: Which of these would be the easiest to learn? Assume we lent you the AoS time machine so you're learning by immersion. Would Old English be easier than the others, or not?

Crime

Father, baby pistol-whipped during robbery, 3 men charged

During the robbery, the men pointed a gun at the baby's head and threatened to kill him if his father didn't turn over his property, police wrote in court papers.

The incident began Wednesday at about 1:30 p.m. when three men in a stolen Toyota committed an auto burglary on Telegraph Avenue, police said.

About 15 minutes later, two of the men walked up behind a father who was carrying his baby near Shattuck Avenue and Bancroft Way, police wrote.

One of the men pistol-whipped the father, hitting the baby in the process, BPD said. Both sustained injuries, according to BPD.

Hopefully some of their cellmates get wind of what they did and take exception.

Aus man jailed for raping masked intruder in home

Klay Holland, 32, faced the Supreme Court of Victoria on Tuesday when he was sentenced to eight years' imprisonment, with a non-parole period of four years and 10 months.
Holland's victim, Shane Cox, had broken into a unit in Melton in Melbourne's west in March 2021 armed with a knife and wearing a mask.

He had asked for money and drugs, and was allegedly linked to others who had gone to the home to stand over a resident.

Cox, 36, who was high on methylamphetamine, was overpowered by Holland who was a guest at the home.

Cox was beaten with a baseball bat and was incapacitated on the floor, where Holland then raped him.

The article is badly written. I think that he killed the thief, it says he was charged with manslaughter, but it's not real clear. Also, in the very last paragraph it mentions Holland'”mental impairment”, but never says what exactly it is.

Gad Saad: The West suffers from cultural self-delusion

Western politicians view magnanimity, empathy, kindness, and tolerance toward outgroup members as laudable traits. It is a form of virtuous largesse that permits Western leaders to pat themselves on the back whilst admiring their reflections in the mirror. Many middle eastern societies interpret these overt virtuous signals as manifestations of pathological weakness. This is because most Western leaders do not possess Cultural Theory of Mind (CToM). They consider the values that they hold dear as precisely those that any society will cherish with equal alacrity. This cultural blindness results in extraordinarily disastrous domestic and foreign policy errors.

Granting entry to millions of immigrants who otherwise possess values that are perfectly antithetical to those of the host nations is a manifestation of cultural blindness. Exhibiting endless military restraint toward belligerent adversaries as a means of building compassionate trust is an exemplar of cultural blindness. There are many regions in the world where the maxim “might is right” is de rigueur. So, in the same way that I am unable to converse with someone who speaks Cantonese because I do not speak that language, politicians who do not “speak” the meta-language inherent to CToM will tackle geopolitical dynamics through a biased prism.

Here's a simple maxim: When someone tells you who you are, believe them. It absolutely baffles me how many people seem unable to do this. Hamas jumps up and down screaming about Oct 7th: “We want to kill Jews. We want to terrorize them. We did it before and we're proud of it. We plan to do it again” and so many Westerners, especially on the left, respond “Oh, no, you're just misunderstood”. Insanity.

Feel Bad Cop Story

Here's the story: Deputies who fatally shot black US airman burst into wrong apartment: attorney

That's a bad shoot. He was holding a gun that he legally owned, pointed at the floor, in his own home. You're allowed to do that, even if there's a cop at the door. It's probably not a good idea, witness the video, but the airman apparently didn't realize it was a cop outside. I'm not even sure why the cop was on Defcon 1. There were no violent noises coming from the apartment, the report from the lady downstairs was vague and didn't even identify a specific location. He'll probably get off with a slap on the wrist, if that, because of qualified immunity. QI is a bad idea, it needs to be abolished. Cops must be held to the same laws they're enforcing, lest they become nothing more than state sanctioned gangs. We're seeing that evolution in real time.

143 I recall a nasty rumor that was going on about a business trip with the VP and his buddy the sales guy. They took one of the young female employees with them, helped her "miss her plane" and got her very drunk and she couldn't really remember the evening. Then she got a raise.

People were very demoralized by this (I heard it from 3 people and no one would touch it with a ten-foot pole). So I went to the president and told him that this rumor was circulating, no idea if it was true or not but it had to end. He looked like he wanted to vomit, because they had groomed the VP to take over upon his retirement.

I believe that the only way out was to accept the young lady's resignation. I never heard what happened, but I guess they bought her off and the VP got a serious warning. He was a worm and probably guilty.

3 years later, the sales guy (typical sleazebag) went on to misdirect an email that resulted in us losing the account that I serviced. I ended up getting let go since I didn't have an account to service anymore.

So I'll be happy to accept your position for Loud American. $50K sign-on bonus. Thanks!

179 64 -- I've always said that was what triggered Gulf War Ii: cultural misunderstanding. As an Arab, Saddam thought that anything he said was action. Telling the world he was going to do something horrific made it true. Saddam's mouth: "I'm going to rain hell down on America." Saddam's mind: "I've rained hell down on America." The Shrub, not being an Arab, took everything Saddam said as gospel truth. If Saddam said he was going to rain hell down on America, the Shrub accepted it as truth.

That's what diplomats are for, right? They should have a pretty good understanding of the customs and cultural meaning of the host's country, right? I learned that in my first year of high school German. Certain words or phrases are not to be taken literally.

The Old Scandinavian because right there you have the split between old Scandinavian languages and old German. German shares a lot of words with contemporary English. On the other hand, you still have the screwed up sentence structoure to deal with.

Jared Bernstein graduated with a bachelor's degree in music from the Manhattan School of Music where he studied double bass with Orin O'Brien. Throughout the '80s, Bernstein was a mainstay on the jazz scene in NYC.

He also earned a Master of Social Work from Hunter College as well as a DSW in social welfare from Columbia University's school of social work.

385 *friendly neighborhood medievalist crawls out of woodwork*

I took both Latin and Old English in grad school. OE is much easier to pick up than Latin, especially if you know German. OE grammar is pretty regular, especially in the word order. Latin... doesn't have a set word order, and it's a vocabulary-poor language, which means there are words that can mean totally different things depending on context--and it's not always easy to sort out the context just from the word order, especially when you've got someone like Virgil playing with word order in ways that Do Not Compute for yours truly. (I mean, honestly, would *you* be able to take "Fierce where of the Achaean by the spear lies Hector" and untangle it into a logical English phrase without help? )

As for Middle English, Chaucer's easy enough. It's when you get away from the London dialect--something like Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, say, which is in a West Midlands dialect--that you run into difficulties.

"There is a New Orleans city accent ... associated with downtown New Orleans, particularly with the German and Irish Third Ward, that is hard to distinguish from the accent of Hoboken, Jersey City, and Astoria, Long Island, where the Al Smith inflection, extinct in Manhattan, has taken refuge. The reason, as you might expect, is that the same stocks that brought the accent to Manhattan imposed it on New Orleans."

They had, or in the case of VDH, have a romanticized idea of the US that bears little resemblance to what it is now.

Pity though. She had a Black Belt in Shopping with an Eighth Dan in Badgering.

465 I respectfully disagree on your view of QI. Answering the door with a gun in your hand when you hear someone say "Sheriff's officer" does not protect you from the inevitable consequences. I am a retired officer of 33 years service and I find it hard to question this officer's action. You and everyone else has unlimited time to investigate this situation while an officer only has split seconds to decide whether to shoot or not shoot. I suspect that if you were in this exact situation your decision would mirror the officer's decision.

466 "I wonder if the Loud American story is true."

Well, true or not, I can think of quite a few Western companies that could use a Loud American to tell management when they're doing something stupid.

In fact, what management needs is the equivalent of a medieval court jester: someone who has license to tell the boss the truth to his face, and not be executed for it.

Posted by: Nemo at May 10, 2024 09:11 AM (S6ArX)

467 The phrase "When someone tells you who you are, believe them" is common. I realize this is a commonplace, but it needs to be refined a bit--because people can tell you they're harmless and cuddly when that's an obvious lie.

When someone tells you who they are *and it's an admission against interest,* you can believe 'em.

But I realize that's "too long, too clunky." Oh well.
