A real common reason folks are jailed locally is driving while suspended. They committed some minor offense, couldn't pay the fine and lost the license. The fine keeps going up. If you give them a way to clear that up and get the license back, most don't get into trouble again.

Simak's "City" is a series of short stories similar to Bradbury's "The Martian Chronicles."
Each short story covers a slice of Earth's future history as mankind eventually leaves the planet and escapes out into the stars. The short story "City" that begins the book is eerily prescient, as technology advances have made living in big cities largely unappealing for most people. The people left behind are clinging to a world and a dream that no longer matters for the future of humanity. Posted by: "Perfessor" Squirrel at May 08, 2024 08:32 PM (BpYfr) 135

I'm currently reading Jack L. Chalker's "The Wonderland Gambit" series.
There's a very strong "The Matrix" vibe, with lots of imagery and motifs that could have been lifted directly from that movie. Except Chalker wrote his series a few years before "The Matrix" was released. Supposedly there were talks of turning The Wonderland Gambit into a movie, but the similarities with The Matrix kind of killed that deal. Look up "Win 7 Classic Shell". It overlays the "11", and makes all your browser ops Look Like you're running Win 7. Same Start Menu, and Control Panel, etc. I despise all the later versions of Windows, not based much on functionality, but because the screen design of them all is based on "phone app" graphics, screen space design, and even menu functionality, which to me, are exactly WRONG for laptop or desktop use. For me, "Win 7 Classic Shell" is a Life Preserver. Jim Sunk New Dawn Galveston, TX Posted by: Jim at May 08, 2024 08:59 PM (e6UQI) 222

"It says that anybody can object to any material or program or activity in the library,” said Hewitt. “So, it’s not limited to books that might be deemed inappropriate for children necessarily, but just pretty much anything. So, it’s a little bit broad, and puts us in a position of making it almost impossible to operate a library.”" - Did you know it's almost impossible to operate a library without exposing 5 year olds to p()rn?
