You'll Buy Our Products And You Will Like Them!

The modern fascistic American corporation is perfectly content to shove crap products nobody wants down our throats.

Except...eventually consumers say...NO!

Plant-based meat sales down in US as customers dislike taste, price: report

Data showed that while those who bought plant-based substitutes in previous years continued to do so, companies failed to entice new customers.

According to GFI, unit sales were down 9 percent in 2023 while dollar sales fell by 2 percent. As a result, the plant-based food market in the US went from being worth $8.2 billion the year before to $8.1 billion.

Well, actually, it's clear that existing customers are leaving too! Factor in inflation, and it's even uglier than at first glance.

This pattern holds true with all sorts of businesses, including the sacrament of The Sustainable Organic Church of The Carbon Apocalypse...the electric vehicle. The business plan is embarrassingly simplistic, and consumers aren't going along with it.

But look at other businesses that push crap we don't want. Lingerie for morbidly obese women? Shaving cream for transsexuals? mRNA-based vaccines that are a health crisis in waiting? Lesbian Studies degrees from 3rd tier colleges?

These products are going the way of the Dodo, and it couldn't happen to a more deserving bunch of lickspittle wanna-be fascists.

17 The problem is when this is mirrored in city/state/federal projects.

Just read an article in a local free paper about a project to eliminate one of the two lanes (in both directions) of a major east-west street: " The --- Lane Reduction Study. . . to determine the impact of the lane reduction and how best repurpose that lane space to enhance the safety of all users. This project began in 2018 with analysis and design, and construction is set to occur in 2024-2025."

The kicker? There's nothing about what these lanes will be used for -- in the name of "eliminating congestion on our roadways."

6 years of analysis and they can't even tell us what they've dreamed up to use that roadway space for, despite the city growing a lot in those same years, thus having to handle *increased* traffic.

This is insanity, the endless takeover of city streets for bike lanes, as if they will magically get us all to commute by bike because traffic suuuucks so hard.

No, this puts more cars on the city streets -- the same city streets where they are eliminating lanes and replacing them with bike lanes, thus eliminating on-street parking, too.

It's bad enough for the residents of these apartments/condos, but then factor in service vehicles - anything form door dash, plumbers, caregivers for the unwell/homebound, etc..

We can't count on the city hurting the same way a business can via lost revenue. We'll be feeling the sting of these ridiculous "green" projects.

We used to get that all the time here in NoVa.

"We won't build any roads, and therefore people won't move here, but will stay close in."

WRONG!!! This inevitably led to construction of the long-needed road, but only after the cost due to ongoing development raised the price by an order of magnitude, and put big arterial roads right through the middle of subdivisions.

In the meantime, millions and millions of man hours and gallons of gas were wasted idling in congested traffic.

Always fun to see who's invested in these ventures.

Over the years 2013 to 2016, (Beyond Meat) received venture funding from GreatPoint Ventures, Kleiner Perkins, Obvious Corporation, Bill Gates, Biz Stone, the Humane Society and Tyson Foods. . . Beyond Meat is also backed by celebrity and athlete investors such as Leonardo DiCaprio, Jessica Chastain, Snoop Dogg, Liza Koshy, Chris Paul, Kyrie Irving, DeAndre Hopkins and others.

And Oatly, the fake milk company:

Oatly is now part-owned by The Blackstone Group (7%), Verlinvest, 45,9% via Nativus Company Limited a part of China Resources (a conglomerate owned by the Chinese state), Industrifonden, Östersjöstiftelsen, and the employees. 78 A simple explanation of our economy over the last fifty years is that advances in technology and global supply chain outsourcing have made making things much more efficient, which should have lowered prices substantially for all sorts of things, but this deflationary benefit was eaten up by growth in government (5 to 20% of jobs), bloated big company payrolls, and government handouts.

People with "Mike Rowe" jobs saw little or no benefit from this and are actually net losers.

And there's a high correlation between the split between those who've benefited and those who have not, to the increasing political divide between MAGA America and those in the Borg.

Hmmm. What about quantities or unit prices? As CBD mentioned, the total market value is down. So either those people who "continued to do so" did so *less* than before, or it got cheaper, or it's a lie.

89 "Plant-based X" borders on false advertising. It's not "plant-based" so much as "lab-produced with vegetable inputs." They're all synthetics. It's "plant-based" the same way that nylon is a "dinosaur-based fabric."

You know what *is* "plant-based meat" with far fewer steps? Meat. Animals eat low-quality and nutrient-poor vegetation and convert it into high-quality and nutrient-rich protein. Livestock are excellent chemical conversion plants.

98 A driver died after crashing a car into the exterior gate of the White House late Saturday, the US Secret Service said.

“Shortly before 10:30pm a vehicle traveling at a high speed collided with an outer perimeter gate on the White House complex,” the service said in a statement on social media platform X, adding there was “no threat” to the White House itself.

Officers arriving at the scene “attempted to render aid to the driver who was discovered deceased,” the statement said.

The Secret Service, along with the police and fire departments of the District of Columbia, have launched an investigation into the fatal crash, according to Secret Service spokesman Anthony Guglielmi.

He added there was “no threat or public safety implications”.

It's not optimism, it's reality. Look around, do you see any signs of support for the sitting POTUS?

On all the top issues voters say they care about, the economy, illegal immigration, crime, inflation, war, etc. Trump is beating Biden like a rented mule. And things aren't magically going to get better before November.

On top of that we have a shiny new RNC that is actually working to try and at least tamp down Democrat cheating and putting money into ballot harversting and early voting.

Biden can't hide in the basement and have the media create a record for him this election. We are all living his record and nobody is happy. Biden is the least popular president in modern polling history. That takes some doing.

My worry is: If Trump is convicted in this sham trial there are some number of voters now on course to vote for Trump who will change their mind because there are many simple minded voters and they’ll say “I can’t vote for a criminal!”…. Similarly if he’s convicted that’ll make any steal more plausible. I hope one person on that jury has enough courage to hang it

BREAKING: US Rep. Henry Cuellar of Texas and his wife indicted on conspiracy and other charges in probe into ties to Azerbaijan. - AP

NEW: Federal prosecutors indicted US congressman Henry Cuellar, a Democrat from Texas, Friday on bribery and money laundering charges connected to a bank in Mexico and an energy company owned by Azerbaijan.
-----
Henry Cuellar, a Democrat from Texas, accepted around $600,000 in exchange for advancing the interests of the bank and the former Soviet Republic over seven years through at least November 2021, according to the indictment.

“In exchange for the bribes paid by the Azerbaijani oil and gas company, Congressman Cuellar allegedly agreed to use his office to influence US foreign policy in favor of Azerbaijan” the Department of Justice (DOJ) said in a statement.

“In exchange for the bribes paid by the Mexican bank, Congressman Cuellar allegedly agreed to influence legislative activity and to advise and pressure high-ranking US executive branch officials regarding measures beneficial to the bank.”

127 GMOs are not exactly in this category. But it seems a lot of those on "the right" think GMOs are deadly, or at least unhealthy. But the push for them is from the farmers ... because they work so well.

From a "chemicals are bad" perspective, GMOs have also replaced a lot worse chemicals. Allegedly Monsanto has paid out some rather large settlements to those "harmed", but I have seen no real evidence of harm.

Mother Jones say 11ppm residue has been found ... not sure if that is high, but I'm sure I breathe more than most since I spray (without a cab) it on my few acres 2-3 times a year, for about 20 years. I get the concentrate on my hands too. No signs of harm ... so far.

But since 90% of corn and soybeans are GMO, it is thrust on the public despite a lot of public "outcry".

164 But the push for them is from the farmers ... because they work so well.

It’s not pushed hard enough. I want to see GMO-based products tell me all the benefits of having been modified. Instead, they almost always hide even the fact of GMO to the best of their ability, relegating it to the fine print as if they’re ashamed of it.

I collect old cookbooks. Every technological advancement in food production used to be a selling point, no matter how weird. Advertisers would search out the Thing That Makes This Product Different and make it front and center on the ads for that brand.

Engineering is not a dirty word outside of the elite. I want to see “Engineered for Better Health” and then a description of how it’s done and what the benefits are to me in the advertising and on the product.

You all know I'm not a Trump supporter, but I don't get the argument that if he's re-elected it will be the end of our democracy. How would he do that, exactly?
Trump doesn't control SCOTUS (they refused to hear his case about the 2020 election)
Trump doesn't control state/county courts (he lost 60 cases over the 2020 election, many Republican judges he appointed)
Trump doesn't have the military to back him if he loses in 2024, or if he wins and refuses to leave the White House in 2029
Trump doesn't control voting precincts (even Republican-run ones declined to overturn 2020 results)
Trump's own loyal VP Mike Pence refused his demands over the 2020 electoral college count
I can imagine riots with MAGA extremists and their guns causing regional violence, but wouldn't police, the national guard, or the military put those down as they always have historically?
As bad as Jan. 6 was, Trump left and we had a peaceful transfer of power as usual.
Retort: "Next time will be different!"
How, exactly?

Proven falsified evidence out of DA Fani Willis office

“Tried to get my son to take a 20-year plea deal by falsifying evidence.”

“I'm the father of Casey Watley who's been incarcerated in Fulton County Jail for five years now. And as we're starting to see, there's a pattern of corruption within the district attorney's office. My son, like I say, has been incarcerated five years.

The attorney he had was a current, a prior district attorney who had worked with Fannie Willis previously.

They came back and stated that they found evidence in my son's case after there was no evidence. They came back and said they found evidence and they had found fingerprints. Well, it came to find out in court that that was a lie. They said a second testing had been done and my son's fingerprints were found on the scene and that was a lie.

The attorney, Darryl Korn, tried to get my son to take a 20-year plea deal by falsifying evidence.

And as you can see, corruption is just running rampant within Fulton County Jail.

It's time for something to be done, man. We gotta do something. Y'all allowing these kids to be locked up, knowing that lady is corrupt. She spent the money that was meant to help the kids, and then she re-coded.

She re-coded all the young people, after she spent the money that was meant to help them to create a safe environment for them not to have to be out here in these gangs. Now let's ask her what she did with that money.

It's time to do something to clean up Fullerton County. We're not talking about tomorrow. We need to start today. You got over 800 people in that jail who shouldn't be there. Haven't been indicted. They won't take them to trial. How is that justice? And you know what the crazy thing is? Fulton County, sit back and watch it.”

183 A simple explanation of our economy over the last fifty years is that advances in technology and global supply chain outsourcing have made making things much more efficient, which should have lowered prices substantially for all sorts of things, but this deflationary benefit was eaten up by growth in government (5 to 20% of jobs), bloated big company payrolls, and government handouts.

I'll take one issue with you. Large corporations shed jobs, once they hit a certain level they will do nothing but shed jobs, because they are more worried about squeezing costs and milking the stock price than continuing to innovate and work on what made them big in the first place. Jobs are created in mid size and smaller, and especially in new ventures as they grow people as their business takes off. Yes, and wage hikes do not cause inflation, they are symptoms of inflation.

Inflation is a money supply issue. Full stop. If you reduce the money supply - or hold it constant - no inflation. Look at wage growth and living standards under the gold standard. Prices were remarkably stable, but people got indoor plumbing, eletcticity, radio, cars, etc.

Decouple from gold and prices have what, quadrupled in the last 50 years?

News from the future:

05 November 2028, Chicago, IL
Yesterday Chicago voters overwhelmingly approved a huge change to the City's Charter, replacing the current City government with the Board of the Chicago Teachers Union (CTA). Voter turnout was low, due to teachers blocking access to almost all polling locations, but the change was approved by 98 percent of voters who went to the polls. CTA President, and soon-to-be Mayor in all but title, Stacy Davis Gates, hailed this as a change for the better for the City due to CTA's stellar performance running Chicago's Public Schools for the past 50 years. She denies rumors that all taxes in the City of Chicago will immediately be raised 250 percent by the incoming CTA-City Government.

Yes, but the new bioengineered stuff is not the same as selective breeding. The GMO stuff can be safer, imo, but I don't really comprehend all that gene splicing stuff very well.

The soybeans I'm planting this year can be sprayed with RoundUp, 2-4D, and another chemical (gluflosinate) for the old Liberty Link seeds. Supposedly using different sprays prevents breeding resistance.

We watched a cooking show recently where the hispanic host was discussing and preparing jackroot (IIRC). The big appeal is that if it's cooked a certain way the texture is very similar to pulled pork, and with the right hispanic seasonings and other stuffings you can make vegetarian tacos that can easily pass as pork.

I pointed out to my wife that I would try that but I bet if you could find the jackroot in a grocery store it would be at or near the price of the pork, so unless it's a religious or health issue, why would I spend the extra money?

I think the answer is twofold. Yes, they like meat, and deep down don't want to give it up.

But because the things look like meat, they can use that as excuse to lecture you on what it actually and why they are better than you.

"This is actually vegan," is a better lead-in that pointing to a bunch of greens and saying they're greens. "No kidding," will be the obvious resonse.

My understanding is that shelf space is a very contentious thing, a subject of constant negotiation. It is likely that the mega-corp that owns the vegan stuff owns other stuff, and requires both to be carried in a certain way.

Part of the pain for Bud Light was that the boycott hit during the period where shelf space is allocated, and once you lose that, it's hard to get it back.

218 If vegans are vegan because of their religious belief in not using animal products, why do they push fake meat?

Precisely because it is a religion. If it was just a preference on their part, they would call them bean burgers and lentil burgers and portobello mushroom burgers. And then they would make better bean burgers, lentil burgers, and portobello mushroom burgers that work from the fact that they’re made of beans, lentils, or mushrooms. I’ve had some great bean burgers and mushroom burgers—but only at places that aren’t trying to fake meat (ironically, usually at religious-run places run by strange Indian cults).

But because being vegan is their religion rather than some side effect of their religion, they need to spread it. And for that, they need to proselytize the wonderful superior meat that whatever their substitute can make. And when that fails for the obvious reason, a jihad to force you to eat it is next on the menu.

224 211 Vegan became a trend because the cool young people realized that 80% or so of elderly folks are mainly vegetarian, and that meant vegetarianism wasn't cool.

"Vegan" stepped in to fill the "I'm cool, not like those old people at your church" void. Even though they're pretty much exact the same except for the self-imposed silliness like not eating anything that touched X or Y.

And it's more militant. If being dissatisfied and demanding is your thing, vegan is a godsend, because you're always going to have a complaint, as virtually nothing is vegan.

Veganism is the chicks with dicks of the culinary world. The appeal is very, very selective.

Owns five cats.

Speaking of which, when did pet stores become so gay? My elder cat needs special cat food that only pet stores carry, and so I got a membership at PetSmartLoveCo or something, and they have some sort of proprietary line of merch being sold by two gay dudes.

A promo sign near the entrance showed a half-head-shaved lesbian snuggling up to her kitty. Just so offputting.

231 Yes, and wage hikes do not cause inflation, they are symptoms of inflation.

If wage hikes are tied to productivity improvements, the price pressure can be overcome. But any price or wage increase has the ability to become inflationary.

The gold standard was no better in stopping inflationary and deflationary periods within the US. The most stable run in inflation we had was from the period once Reagan broke stagflation until Biden became president. No gold standard. You could argue since gold restricted money creation, it was a choke on growth. Money supply must be based upon the productivity of the economy which issues it. FJB has destroyed our productivity, on top of scandalous overspending, which is why we have - in real terms - roughly 10% inflation.

Trader Joe’s is an example of advertising the difference. They specifically go for an older style of advertising that encourages leaning in to whatever makes your product different. (I would point out that Trader Joe’s obviously calls them “mushroom burgers”, too.) I would expect any mushroom patty from them to be quite good.

242 Yes, and wage hikes do not cause inflation, they are symptoms of inflation.

I saw an infographic some leftwinger posted and it compared the increase in prices at all major fastfood companies over the last 10 years. They were all up 50-100% with most of the increase in the last 4. It also had the nominal inflation rate over the same time period which was 31%. The poster then complained about the greed of the fast food companies for raising prices higher then inflation.

And someone else posted the rather on point comment of, if prices all across this, and most sectors, are up much higher then the official inflation rate what makes you believe the official inflation rate is accurate?

Most just eat the fruity bits around the big white seeds.
The 'pork' is made from the fibers between the fruity parts.
Most people throw that out as eating it would be like eating an orange rind.

252 One note. CORPORATIONS aren't pushing this nonsense. The executives at these corporations are doing it.

And they're doing it because of the 'contract' nonsense that's become the norm in corporate America.

The days of somebody working 30 years starting in the mailroom to become the CEO are over.

Now, they 'contract' them out for just a handful of years at at time, and they have zero loyalty to the corporation. Why would they? Sure, there are some performance incentives in their contracts, but by and large their personal pay is unaffected by the actual performance of the company they theoretically manage.

So these woke contract executives simply DO NOT CARE if the company makes money or not. They get their golden parachute and full contract money regardless of whether the company craters.

They push woke nonsense they know is going to cost the company huge amounts of money, but they don't care. They think its fine that the company they have no loyalty to loses money.

When you understand that, you understand why they engage in this nonsense.

253 NEW: MIT has banned the use of DEI statements for faculty hiring and promotions.

This is huge, a turning point — the policy, functionally an ideological weed-out tool, is widely unpopular in academia, but MIT is the first elite private institution to pull the plug.

Posted by: andycanuck (UfUdn) at May 05, 2024 01:26 PM

They are banning use of DEI statements. They are not banning DEI practices for hiring and promotions. Just like everything else with the Marxist left, they never stop their radical practices, they simply stop being open and explicit about them.

i.e. the NFL. They are just as radical now in support of Black-Lives-Matter radical, racist activist and terrorist organizations now as they were during 2020. But they just have stopped the kneeling and the explicit BLM promotion. Instead, they are "just" contributing billions of dollars to radical activist BLM organizations.

Same thing with James O'Keefe when he exposed ACORN over a decade ago. They didn't shut down ACORN, they simply rebranded it and kept going. Same thing with CRT in schools. They still teach it in every subject, they just don't have courses entitled CRT anymore.

Meh, abortion was something that people didn't count on. Michigan got swept blue because the University of Michigan Health System said that without unfettered abortion (which was on the ballot), they would shut down their OBGYN clinic. Hard to overcome that. I guess there were shenanigans elsewhere, as usual.

Posted by: Ace-Endorsed Author A.H. Lloyd at May 05, 2024 01:36 PM

The Marxist left is using abortion to scare women in Michigan again this election cycle. I have seen plenty of ads running lately where they blame Trump through his SCOTUS appointments for women losing "abortion rights" and then warning that if he is elected again, he will ban abortion nationwide.

So yeah, they're still using the abortion issue to drive their base of stupid liberal women to the polls. And it will work yet again as it has been for years. Because that is pretty much all that liberal women care about. And younger women are even more liberal and pro-abortion than older generations.
