7 Evening and morning to all the early risers, sleepyheads, and late toilers! Today is the second day of the 24/7 closing of the ramp I've been using for years to the bridge for my homeward commute, plus the rightmost lane of the bridge. Miss Linda is coming with me to work today, so this evening we can use the high-occupancy lanes to come home. Tomorrow and going forward? As Pixy put it, I will be, as the technical term goes, "fucked."

9 So my most recent effort to get Mesh-like WiFi without the higher cost of a true mesh system thought stately VIA Manor seems to have paid off.

House was pre-wired with ethernet throughout when we bought it.

So, one Netgear router as the main router, a powered 8 port ethernet switch, and four refurbished Netgear routers, all connected by ethernet, and in access point mode.

Pretty much have strong WiFi everywhere, and so far, very stable.

13 The biggest problem I can see with buying the aging supercomputer is the operating cost for the now mediocre throughput. It's kind of like how the then state of the art CGI for 'The Last Starfighter' took six months to render on a Cray. The then most processing capacity you could buy if there was no concern about the price tag or power draw. By 1996, the Playstation offered 'Starblade Alpha' a rail shooter plainly inspired by TLS, that did in real-time comparable or better graphics, albeit at NTSC resolution.

And things progressed much slower during that span of years than 2016 to today.

17 Yesterday, with a second day off, I visited Walmart and picked up the oil and filter for the spring change for the '16 Buick. The Supertech oil, their house/budget brand, is excellent oil for $4 less for 5 qts. than is Quaker State, and something like $9 less than Mobil 1. Still, I can afford it, and I have this odd sense of guilt that I'm cheating the car. Completely illogical; the car, at only 76K miles, will never know the difference.

The filter can make a bit more difference -- but I change every 5K miles, and for that any Fram filter (Tough Gard, in this case) will be fine.

33 Russia reportedly used the choking agent chloropicrin against Uke troops.

I will assign this a rating "pants on fire abject bullshit" until I get concrete proof.

Chloropicrin is also a soil antifungal/ antimicrobial which is even approved for use in the US.

I believe Uke farmers are using it on their fields before spring planting before I believe russia is violating international war crimes by launching chemical warfare.

37 In the tech news I am using my new C. Crane CCRado 3 showed up yesterday. Its claim to fame? It is an AM/FM radio that can act as a Bluetooth speaker, and receives 2 meter Ham radio and NOAA weather broadcasts.

The case and interface are nearly identical to my CCRadio Plus that dates to 2006 and still functions perfectly.

Part of their charm is the are well designed, well made, and excel at what they are designed to do.

41 Incidentally, if you need door alarms on an outbuilding. YoLink has "LoRa" sensors which connect to a smart hub device in your house. They claim 1/4 mile range. In my use, the little magnetic battery powered door sensors work from inside my metal sided barn 350ft from the house. Send an instantaneous alert to my phone when a door is opened. They also have a door sensor with a wired magnetic sensor that allowed me to clip the sensor off and plug the wires into my Dakota Alert driveway alarm receiver so I get phone alerts when someone enters my driveway. Pretty cool for a relatively cheap device.

Hmm, may have to check this out. I have a Emergency Radio that is similar. Have had it for years. Has a hand crank on it to power it up during long outages. Also AC/DC power, of course. I own a little AM/FM/WX radio too. I used to have an WX only radio from Radio Shack but it stopped working last year, for some reason. Had it for almost 30 years so got some use out of it.

C. Crane has a number of different radios for sale. I also have their pocket sized Skywave AM/FM/Shortwave radio. It is just excellent. I take it to the Aggies football game which is a radio interference zone from hell and it rejects all that and pulls in the local broadcast without issue. They're not inexpensive so I highly recommend you buy orphans (reconditioned). With these you save a few bucks and they're absolutely like brand new.

90 LiS, Miklos, do they pick up shortwave well? Using my Grundig portable AM/FM/SW, I used to set my watches to the WWV time broadcasts, but for some reason I can't pick that or anything intelligible up on SW. This has been going on for a few years, and I didn't need an external antenna to get WWV before that.
Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius,

When I get a good signal yeah it's clear. Most of the I time the quality is something less than that. I'm not the best person to ask that question since my SkyWave is the first short wave receiver I've ever had, so I don't really know what to expect or really how to go about using it effectively. With that said, it's pretty remarkable what it pulls in.

128 Anyone who clings to the historically untrue -- and thoroughly immoral -- doctrine that 'violence never settles anything' I would advise to conjure up the ghosts of Napoleon Bonaparte and of the Duke of Wellington and let them debate it. The ghost of Hitler could referee, and the jury might well be the Dodo, the Great Auk, and the Passenger Pigeon.

Violence, naked force, has settled more issues in history than has any other factor, and the contrary opinion is wishful thinking at its worst. Breeds that forget this basic truth have always paid for it with their lives and freedoms.

64 characters? I wish, most times your limited to 8 characters and and at most 16.
