Prayers up for those that have asked us for them;
Prayers up for those that know they need them but have not asked us for them; Prayers up for those that need them but don’t know it yet; and Prayers up for those who pray alone, asking for help in silence, and whose prayers are known but to God! And prayers up for all "our" politicians who have apparently decided that money and power are far more desirable than honor or integrity, let them see the error of their ways and repent! Last week we began tackling the financial side of the situation and learned that because of various programs, my ex-son-in-law will provide support for his children in death that he was never likely to do in life, which is a blessing. This in turn opens a path forward for my daughter and her children to have a place of their own.
Before that happens, we have to do a thorough spring cleaning and focus on healing and developing a new routine. Time moves forward whether we're ready for it or not, and preschool starts in the fall. Many thanks to the Horde for your prayers, which have been very effective. If it's not too much trouble, please remove my earlier remarks and substitute these instead. Posted by: Ace-Endorsed Author A.H. Thanks, Horde, for praying for my mom last couple of months. Her fractured hip has healed and she's walking, albeit slowly and with a cane, again. I've made several modifications to the house, including various rails and steps where the original builder made the rises too tall. She spent a month in a nursing home rehab and Dad and I spent all day, every day, with her there in shifts. The staff was okay. Half were kind and full of compassion, the other half were slow, lazy factory workers for whom the residents seemed to be their bothersome annoyances. That half exuded a palpable resentment that Dad and I spent 12 hours a day in their workspace. I'm told that was one of the better nursing home communities around, too, by several residents who had been to several other places in the area. It's a low bar, I guess. Never again, I hope.
I'm thankful that God brought me here, because if I didn't end up in a hospital in 2019 from alcohol, who exactly would be taking care of my folks? Vibrant women who hate them and who hate their jobs, most likely. Posted by: Taq, Rickrolled by Jesus at May 11, 2024 08:18 AM (iRX3h) 28

36 Rolex watches used to be in the category of just expensive high end. The mill I worked at in Ohio passed them out to even rank and file for thirty years service. Now, the sky is the limit on value for certain models. That is a wonderful gesture on your part, both in the value but more important the sentiment.

I've got a post up at my author page (link in nic) for those who want a longer version, but I think it's clear that the current generation has grown up with a very distorted, legalistic idea of war.
War has no rules. Sherman was right, it is cruelty, and you can't refine it. Here and there the combatants have decided to set some boundaries, but those only last as long as they are convenient. The West in particular to a very elastic idea of what they mean. This is because we haven't fear for our lives since 1945, and it's funny to watch fat, happy and stupid people preen over how THEY wouldn't have used mass bombing or atomic weapons, no THEY were too good for that sort of thing. Oh, and food being a weapon is really, really old. Starvation works. Another thing ignorant people don't get. There is no Global Teacher whose skirt you can pull and demand the rules be enforced. Israel's problem is that every time it was in a position to dictate a peace, we stopped it. It's time we let things run their course. Posted by: Ace-Endorsed Author A.H. Got woken up at 1:30 by the pups wanting out. I let them out and brought them back in at 1:45. At 2:25 the pups wanted out again. I let them out and brought them back in, then let Diana out and brought her back in. The pups continued to complain until 3:30, but I ignored them, since I'd already let them out twice. At 5:00, the pups wanted out again. By this time I wake up anyway, so I let them out. I found someone had dumped in their pen and it was widely smeared on floor and bedding. So I got a fat four hours of sleep all in all. Posted by: Hadrian the Seventh at May 11, 2024 08:44 AM (MoZTd) 76

Thanks for the orchestral Zappa this morning, Mis Hum. Are you familiar with the 1969 Pink Floyd with Zappa from a live concert in Belgium? On Youtube, 13 minutes or so, very spacy and of it's time. Zappa was the only person on the premises who wasn't tripped out to the gills. Some great shots of the Euro-hippies leaving the concert at the end.

Meanwhile, in the fun and exciting world of organized religion, apparently the United Methodists formally voted to rewrite sacred scripture and declare sodomy and sexual deviancy are just fine, and gay bishops, same-sex unions (which they will call "marriage") are super and wonderful.
There's a story up at First Things outlining how this came to pass, but the TL;DR version is that contra what a lot of outsiders thought, at no point was a there a voting majority in favor of these changes. Every time it came up it was voted down. But wait, UMC has had gay clergy, performed ceremonies for YEARS, so how did that happen? The answer is that the woke leadership simply refused to enforce the rules and there was no way to compel them. They just waited until people who actually believed in their faith got sick of the hypocrisy and left and then they had the votes they needed. (con't) Posted by: Ace-Endorsed Author A.H. Prayer up for all asking and those in need but not asking.
One time request. My neighbor B. About a month ago I come home from work and there were fire trucks and weirdly the gas company next door. Carbon monoxide was all I could get out of anybody. Last week Mrs. Reforger said she thought she saw the on again off again boyfriend sitting in a wheelchair in back. I got confirmation yesterday as he needed help getting up the stairs into the house. I guess the heat exchanger in the heater cracked and he got poisoned. So bad he was in a coma for 6 days, has lost function in his legs and damaged his brain. His whole body has atrophied. I wound up talking to him for a while. Trying to talk someone up from "I wish I had died" is hard. Admittedly I was a bit harsh towards the end of the conversation. "You got a choice. Sit in that damn chair for the rest of your life or do everything you can to get out of it." I showed him some excersises to do. Explained that he needed to do as much excersise as he could every day. If it moves move it. Posted by: Reforger at May 11, 2024 09:22 AM (B705c) 179

Rolex watches used to be in the category of just expensive high end. The mill I worked at in Ohio passed them out to even rank and file for thirty years service. Now, the sky is the limit on value for certain models. That is a wonderful gesture on your part, both in the value but more important the sentiment.
Posted by: bill in arkansas ---- I saw about five British Antiques Roadshow in a season [including some past-years repeats] that had expensive Rolex valuations, and not just 1960's or 1970's variants. The company is really good about authentication and repair too apparently. Although there's something special about something on some [early?] models that they will replace with a modern version that you should tell them not to touch. Posted by: jewells45fuckcancer at May 11, 2024 09:53 AM (iF0sF) --- At one point years ago I worked with a hospice doctor, and he said that it is not uncommon for patients to greatly exceed expectations because the greater comfort allows them to enjoy life again, they eat better, can move around. Yes, I have some but I usually have to take pain meds at night for my back so I don't want to do both.
Posted by: jewells45fuckcancer at May 11, 2024 09:51 AM (iF0sF) Sadly, I've known a lot of people who mixed pot and pills on a regular basis, but for recreational reasons. The pot doesn't amplify the narcotics like booze does. No more dangerous than the pills alone. So if you're worried about that, don't. It's fine. Do whatever makes you feel better. "Just Stop Oil’s ‘spring uprising’ protests funded by US philanthropists" Why, you ask. Cuz that word, philanthropist, breaks down in Latin to mean "lovers of mankind" which they certainly are not. Piper I fell asleep before I saw your kind words, thank you I want you to be healthy and succeed. Jewells45 wife and I maintain our prayers for you. My own life is going so well it frightens me sometimes. I am successful in my contracting job, my son is doing well at his, and my wife as healthy as can be expected is content at hers. I am not around as much these days, but I do read here when able. I want us all to be okay. It is a special group to me. One of the greatest difficulties those of us over 50 face is trying to find the analogies, metaphors, and common ground that we can with those that are coming behind us who are going to wind up trying to be the glue that holds all this together. I do not offer this critically or inflictively to any of us individually, but trying to remind us all myself included. I have the honor of working with several inspiring twenty-somethings. Had I not taken the time to remember the kindnesses and mentoring tough though it was the generations before me took the time to gift me, unworthy as I am I would have avoided my beautiful horrible burden to do likewise. Posted by: Yudhishthira's Dice at May 11, 2024 10:07 AM (0FoWg) --- No, prior to the Boomer Ascendancy, boundaries were assumed to be meaningless unless enforced. The Boomers fully bought into the notion of legalistic international relations where a "rules-based order" required that boundaries be mindlessly preserved - unless there was a possibility for grift. Add to this the American Puritian streak that requires everything we do to have moral rather than simply practical reason, and that's how we find ourselves going bankrupt to ensure that tiny villages none of us can find on a map have a specific flag flying over them. We also do this because the stakes are so small. This is why I want the active Army reduced to a tiny expeditionary force (20,000 troops), garrisons, and cadre, so that any overseas games we play requires a massive National Guard mobilization, which would act on a check against this nonsense. Lord, we give praise for those already saved through your mercy. And we offer this prayer knowing we are all born sinners. Amen" Father G-d to help me to see humanity as He sees them..."because iniquity (sin) abounds, the love of many (people) will grow cold..." a verse getting easier to understand as darkness grows in governments, big business, banks, medical industry, universities, military leadership, media outlets. And hearts. It's easy to despise leaders who have betrayed us in every area of our existence, seeking control of our thoughts, bodies, children, food, finances and property, while importing a potential fighting force of military age, well fed, physically fit foreign men, large numbers who hate whitey, Christianity and capitalism...but love free phones, EBT cards, Section 8 housing, Medicaid and race categorized immunity from laws. Similar not the same, metaphor is the use of two unrelated concepts or ideas to find a bridge to allow a protege to understand the similarities of (ideally) some data point they understand to the one you are trying to convey. The target cognitive field is to stimulate the emotional part of the mind to stimulate the person to consider something in a way they grasp. Analogy, on the other hand as I understand it, compares two things to explain a concept or idea. It uses “like” or “as” to make a comparison, and the purpose is to establish a logical connection between the two things being compared. Piper and I were discussing the literary versus cinematic Forrest Gump the "line" from that was "Life is like a box of chocolate-you never know what you are gonna get." "Life is like a box of chocolate" by itself is a metaphor and requires the recipient to make more leaps-adding "you never know what you are gonna get" makes it the use of the same sort of imagery but FOCUSED on a rudimentary understanding of chaos and dynamic disequilibrium. I have been trying to understand the rumblings going on in Egypt over the last 72 hours; looks like they are going to scrap the Camp David accord and militarily reoccupy the Sinai (,forbidden under Camp David); tank columns are already moving in. Still it's a big leap to think they would go from that to staging an invasion of Rafah and beyond.

There is no reason you should have to suffer with this for three weeks until your next appointment. Going to the ER will get you more attention if the care team doesn’t respond.
