Please submit any prayer requests to me, “Annie’s Stew” at apaslo atsign hotmail dot com. Prayer requests are generally removed after four weeks unless we receive an update.
Prayer Requests:
3/2 Reforger asked for prayers for his Coworker “D”, a widowed mom of 4 who is having a rough time with daughter #1. D’s daughter had to be incarcerated. She went nuts, trashed her room, broke things, and even kicked a cop. She could use a lot of prayers.
4/20 Update – Coworker D’s daughter is going to go live with her dad. Mom is at wit’s end. They hope a change in scenery will provoke some positive changes, since nothing else is working.
2/29 – DaveT asks for prayers. We had prayed in the past for him, as he was trying to save his cats and his home from repossession (due to a relative who burdened the family home with debt). DaveT is over 65 and is not able to work much. The cats are elderly and one is blind, and the only family he has. Things had turned around and it looked like he was going to be fine last summer, but now a new judge is on the case and seems to want to kick DaveT and the cats out of the house. Please pray. If anyone wants to contribute, Annie’s Stew has the details of his GiveSendGo.
4/27 Update – DaveT was able to get life-saving care for his cat, Dennis, and now Dennis is recovering well. It was a miracle, both for the results and the reasonable cost. The sleazy “bank” is still working to evict DaveT.
3/9 – Hadrian the Seventh asked for prayers for Her Majesty, who is having knee replacement surgery. He’d like prayers for a successful operation, but also an uneventful recovery. Her previous surgery in 2019 (on the other knee) was marked by great pain and the effect of the medication was terrible.
5/4 Update – Her Majesty has been suffering from nausea and no appetite for several days. While her knee is getting better, there is some fluid weeping from the incision area. Also, she has had to go in and get further work done on her expensively-repaired eyes to remove scar tissue that’s formed around the new lenses.
5/8 Update – Her Majesty had to go to the hospital again. Her incision from her knee replacement became infected. They had to open it up again, clean it out, and sew it back up again. Her medical vicissitudes with her knee and eye have made her depressed. She is home again now, and looks a good deal better than when she went in.
3/23 – Fenelon Spoke needs prayers for Jessie, their “retired” organist. Jessie had fallen. Nothing was broken, but it is a setback for her and she is in pain.
4/20 Update – Jessie is in less pain now.
3/28 – Reforger asked for prayers for his wife, who is applying for a promotion. The new job would triple her salary.
4/20 Update – Mrs. Reforger got the job.
4/1 – News from Washington Nearsider: His savings have expired and May's bills cannot yet be paid. Another custody hearing - to reevaluate the March 13 determination to give his ex full custody - has been scheduled for May 13th, so that's a date on the calendar towards which he has to work.
He has added one (1) client to his custom model aircraft list, and hopes to add several more, even though he can only work on one at a time. Having a known stream of income is better than not. On the job front, Nearsider had a promising interview, only to be told at the end that though his writing samples, resume, attitude, background, and presentation were all exceptional, his removal from federal service prevented any path forward. Nearsider explained the details leading up to his removal, and while the panel expressed their sympathies for his situation and their admiration at his courage, their position was unchanged. He suspects this employer was simply the first to be so direct, and that he's missed out on several other opportunities for the same reason.
Several contractors have contacted him in response to applications he's submitted and he's hoping at least one of them will be willing to focus on the writing, resume, attitude, background, and presentation vice the end of his federal career. As usual, more follows.

4/24 Update – After receiving an overwhelming outpouring of support from the Horde, Washington Nearsider was able to pay the mortgage for May and June, and is less panicked about losing his house. He also received a promotion at Home Depot, so he is managing a department, which will also increase his pay at bit. He loves you all and is so grateful.
4/13 – NaughtyPine asked for prayers. There was a “psychic” who went on a murder-suicide rampage. A 9-year-old girl survived the attack, but her baby sister died in her arms. The surviving little girl needs prayers.
4/13 – Ace-Endorsed Author A.H. Lloyd gave an update. His former son-in-law has died. It is something of a relief. He was an abusive, manipulative, drug-using alcoholic whose hobby was breaking into cars. He was well-known to law enforcement and the justice system. He had a remarkable capacity for wiping out wealth, either through outright theft or negligence. A.H. Lloyd’s daughter tried to leave him multiple times, but he was able to woo her back again and again. The last straw was when he used their tax refund for an Only Fans girl. The deceased is survived by his children, who he should have supported, but have been in A.H. Lloyd’s care for more than a year. Pray for the deceased if you like, but please pray for the children and their mother.
4/13 – Cybersmythe sent an update on his job search. He has received a formal offer of employment, for a job he thinks he wants. He appreciates all the kind thoughts and prayers.
4/13 – Nurse Ratched asked for prayers for her Marine, J, and his wife, M, who are having their wedding celebration on 4/13. They are sweet kids, respectful and kind to each other and would benefit greatly from the power of Horde prayers.
4/16 – Notsothoreau asked for prayers for a co-worker’s mentor and long time friend, DM, who has been diagnosed with throat cancer. Prayers for DM and also for his wife, that they would be strengthened and, God willing, that DM would be healed.
4/18 – Misanthropic Humanitarian asked for prayers, as he will be having his right knee replacement surgery on 5/6/24.
5/6 Update – Misanthropic Humanitarian sends his thanks for all the prayers and good wishes. He is home now.
4/20 – AnchorPoint wanted to share an answered prayer, as well as a request. The answered prayer is: AnchorPoint’s dad passed away about 2 years ago. The estate was not going to be a windfall, but they hoped it would be enough to pay off their mortgage. After all the work was done and all the bills were paid, the final check was $72.38 off from the total mortgage payoff amount! The prayer request is: AnchorPoint’s relationship with one sister is bad. The sister has had a lot of trauma in her life and significant mental health issues and physical issues. AnchorPoint asks for prayers that their relationship would be restored.
4/20 – FenelonSpoke asked for prayers for her son. God willing, her son will graduate in May with a degree in horticulture. He has a paid internship with a multinational agricultural company in the PA Dutch area starting right after graduation. He needs to find a place to live.
4/20 – Defenestratus humbly requests prayers for a friend named Jourdan, a wonderful young woman with a 2-year-old daughter. Jourdan had gotten the good news that her breast cancer tumors had disappeared after chemo. But now she caught a nasty bug, and Jourdan has spent a week in the hospital getting blood transfusions.
4/20 - Miley, okravangelist asked for prayers for her brother. They think he is on the verge of a breakdown, stressing out over prepping. He flies off the handle and is freaking everyone else out. Miley could use prayers, too, since worrying about her brother is making her ill.
4/25 Update – Her brother seems to have calmed down lately, but prayers are still welcome!
4/27 – rhennigantx posted an update on his friend, Tim, who we have been praying for. Tim is not doing well. He is back on the vent and unresponsive. Rhennigantx doesn’t think Tim will make it.
4/27 – Someone Else requested prayers, as she is going through difficult family issues with an elderly aunt as well as dealing with some professional problems at this time.
4/27 – JW asked for prayers for Libby, who has a glioblastoma tumor that affects her word choices, so communication is very difficult. Libby has ahd surgery, radiation, and chemo, but is worse in the 4 weeks since treatment ended.
5/2 – A Dude in MI requested prayers for dude Jr who is having a rough situation at school. Please pray for a quick resolution and no lasting effects.
5/4 – Sock Monkey requested prayers for a SIL who is interviewing with the Republican county leaders, for the interim position of County Attorney. He’s not necessarily a Trump supporter, but he is definitely qualified for the job and has the values that mesh.
5/4 – Paul requested prayers for the families of the toddlers bombed to death in Gaza.
5/8 – Fenelon Spoke asked for prayers for the young people graduating from college this weekend and beyond – that the graduation ceremonies might be peaceful, and that the young people going on to internships and jobs and looking for jobs might have a future with hope. Also for peace on college and university campuses.

12 Last week we began tackling the financial side of the situation and learned that because of various programs, my ex-son-in-law will provide support for his children in death that he was never likely to do in life, which is a blessing. This in turn opens a path forward for my daughter and her children to have a place of their own.

Before that happens, we have to do a thorough spring cleaning and focus on healing and developing a new routine. Time moves forward whether we're ready for it or not, and preschool starts in the fall.

Many thanks to the Horde for your prayers, which have been very effective.

If it's not too much trouble, please remove my earlier remarks and substitute these instead.

People like the taste of coffee but the caffeine hurts their stomach. My go-to beverage is caffeine-free diet cola, which sounds awful, but tastes fine and gives me the carbonation I crave without tons of sugar or a tummy ache.

I tend to have a low caffeine tolerance, which started in my 20s. Too much makes me twitchy, so I limit myself a cup of coffee per day.

We had partial clouds in mid-Michigan, and I couldn't stay up.

Almost exactly 33 years ago, we had a spectacular display here that filled half the sky. It was my last night of high school, and we were at a (now closed) drive-in watching "Truth or Dare." Then the sky lit up and we wondered what it meant. Was it a sign of the future?

27 Thanks, Horde, for praying for my mom last couple of months. Her fractured hip has healed and she's walking, albeit slowly and with a cane, again. I've made several modifications to the house, including various rails and steps where the original builder made the rises too tall. She spent a month in a nursing home rehab and Dad and I spent all day, every day, with her there in shifts. The staff was okay. Half were kind and full of compassion, the other half were slow, lazy factory workers for whom the residents seemed to be their bothersome annoyances. That half exuded a palpable resentment that Dad and I spent 12 hours a day in their workspace. I'm told that was one of the better nursing home communities around, too, by several residents who had been to several other places in the area. It's a low bar, I guess. Never again, I hope.

I'm thankful that God brought me here, because if I didn't end up in a hospital in 2019 from alcohol, who exactly would be taking care of my folks? Vibrant women who hate them and who hate their jobs, most likely.

This is why I tell my kids to have kids of their own. This whole notion that you can live child-free without consequence and then expect hirelings to take care of you when you are sick or old is nonsense.

Some can't have children, but that's where extended family and friends come in. People living in their online world are going to have a rude awakening when all those likes fail to show up at their bedside.

When I retired from the military, I swore I'd never go running again, but it's not so bad if you don't care how long or how fast you go.

It is unfortunate, and the mere presence of children is of course no guarantee. I've seen plenty of pie fights between kids where the parent is basically a banner to be captured and waved around.

My comment was mostly in reference to many of my friends who chose not to have kids even if they did marry because that cut into their "fun money." I've lost touch with almost all of them because I simply didn't have the time or money to go to gaming cons, take lavish vacations, etc.

War has no rules. Sherman was right, it is cruelty, and you can't refine it. Here and there the combatants have decided to set some boundaries, but those only last as long as they are convenient. The West in particular to a very elastic idea of what they mean.

This is because we haven't fear for our lives since 1945, and it's funny to watch fat, happy and stupid people preen over how THEY wouldn't have used mass bombing or atomic weapons, no THEY were too good for that sort of thing.

Oh, and food being a weapon is really, really old. Starvation works. Another thing ignorant people don't get. There is no Global Teacher whose skirt you can pull and demand the rules be enforced. Israel's problem is that every time it was in a position to dictate a peace, we stopped it. It's time we let things run their course.

Got woken up at 1:30 by the pups wanting out. I let them out and brought them back in at 1:45.

At 2:25 the pups wanted out again. I let them out and brought them back in, then let Diana out and brought her back in. The pups continued to complain until 3:30, but I ignored them, since I'd already let them out twice.

At 5:00, the pups wanted out again. By this time I wake up anyway, so I let them out. I found someone had dumped in their pen and it was widely smeared on floor and bedding.

So I got a fat four hours of sleep all in all.

Apparently not in all cases. I remember when they used to use perchloroethylene (dry cleaning fluid) to decaffeinate coffee.

It seems you have to look at the labels to determine the method.

Solar flare(s). Unusually powerful and energetic. They interact with the Earth's magnetic field... charged particles bouncing around and create the lightshow. Normally not this powerful, so we don't see it, but common up north. Has to do with the shape of the Earth's magnetic field... it's not a perfect sphere the same "thickness" everywhere.

I'm sure someone else can give a more technically accurate explanation.

When I go back June 11 I'm having a talk with the doctor. If there aren't any other options out there, medicine wise then I'm considering stopping treatment. I'm not living like this anymore.

One time request. My neighbor B. About a month ago I come home from work and there were fire trucks and weirdly the gas company next door. Carbon monoxide was all I could get out of anybody.
Last week Mrs. Reforger said she thought she saw the on again off again boyfriend sitting in a wheelchair in back.
I got confirmation yesterday as he needed help getting up the stairs into the house.
I guess the heat exchanger in the heater cracked and he got poisoned. So bad he was in a coma for 6 days, has lost function in his legs and damaged his brain. His whole body has atrophied.
I wound up talking to him for a while.
Trying to talk someone up from "I wish I had died" is hard.
Admittedly I was a bit harsh towards the end of the conversation.
"You got a choice. Sit in that damn chair for the rest of your life or do everything you can to get out of it."
I showed him some excersises to do. Explained that he needed to do as much excersise as he could every day.
If it moves move it.

The company is really good about authentication and repair too apparently. I called my mother on her birthday and her various health issues came up and she reiterated that she was DONE with treatment. Palliative care was all she would accept.

She seemed a little worried that I would interfere and I told her that no, I'm not going to come charging in at the 11th hour with a court order. She's had a good run, has lived long enough to play with her great-grandchildren, and I respect her decision (which is consistent with Catholic teachings, though she's an apostate).

And before you laugh, my mom actually pulled that off when she was hospitalized some years ago. Refused to eat, doctor came in and she said she was sick of the food and wanted some wine with dinner, decent wine, too. Doc argued a little bit and then prescribed four ounces of wine, which came in a dosing cup.

Are you on hospice care then? They gave my wife the good stuff. Was very helpful the last 5 days of her life. Hospice nurses were great, and when the end neared, visited everyday. There was a 24/7 number I could call.

At one point years ago I worked with a hospice doctor, and he said that it is not uncommon for patients to greatly exceed expectations because the greater comfort allows them to enjoy life again, they eat better, can move around.

Sadly, I've known a lot of people who mixed pot and pills on a regular basis, but for recreational reasons.

The pot doesn't amplify the narcotics like booze does. No more dangerous than the pills alone.

So if you're worried about that, don't. It's fine. Do whatever makes you feel better.

One of the greatest difficulties those of us over 50 face is trying to find the analogies, metaphors, and common ground that we can with those that are coming behind us who are going to wind up trying to be the glue that holds all this together.

I do not offer this critically or inflictively to any of us individually, but trying to remind us all myself included. I have the honor of working with several inspiring twenty-somethings. Had I not taken the time to remember the kindnesses and mentoring tough though it was the generations before me took the time to gift me, unworthy as I am I would have avoided my beautiful horrible burden to do likewise.

No, prior to the Boomer Ascendancy, boundaries were assumed to be meaningless unless enforced. The Boomers fully bought into the notion of legalistic international relations where a "rules-based order" required that boundaries be mindlessly preserved - unless there was a possibility for grift.

Add to this the American Puritian streak that requires everything we do to have moral rather than simply practical reason, and that's how we find ourselves going bankrupt to ensure that tiny villages none of us can find on a map have a specific flag flying over them.

We also do this because the stakes are so small. This is why I want the active Army reduced to a tiny expeditionary force (20,000 troops), garrisons, and cadre, so that any overseas games we play requires a massive National Guard mobilization, which would act on a check against this nonsense.

Similar not the same, metaphor is the use of two unrelated concepts or ideas to find a bridge to allow a protege to understand the similarities of (ideally) some data point they understand to the one you are trying to convey.

The target cognitive field is to stimulate the emotional part of the mind to stimulate the person to consider something in a way they grasp.

Analogy, on the other hand as I understand it, compares two things to explain a concept or idea. It uses “like” or “as” to make a comparison, and the purpose is to establish a logical connection between the two things being compared.

Piper and I were discussing the literary versus cinematic Forrest Gump the "line" from that was "Life is like a box of chocolate-you never know what you are gonna get."

"Life is like a box of chocolate" by itself is a metaphor and requires the recipient to make more leaps-adding "you never know what you are gonna get" makes it the use of the same sort of imagery but FOCUSED on a rudimentary understanding of chaos and dynamic disequilibrium.

By the time we hit proper night around 10:25 PM, the action line had moved south of us, and of course we had cloud cover to our south. They should consider some degree of kidney failure that they could be helped with either diuretics or some type of intervention treatment. They are worried that Israel's incursion in Rafah will push Gazans to break down the barrier between Gaza and Egypt which leads into Sinai. The chances of an actual military clash I thin are still less than 50/50, but the Camp David accords where Egypt agreed to keep it's military out of the Sinai is over. Apparently Biden and Blinken have given them a wink and a nod and said go ahead, and Israel has too many other concerns to say anything about it right now.

Making the Sinai neutral was in their best interests because Egypt needs to keep the terrorist elements who reside there in check.
I read this stuff every day and can find nothing about this. Nothing about how Egypt has changed it's stance towards israel.

It’s worth remembering that Egypt’s leadership absolutely detests Hamas. I’d be willing to bet the Egyptians are gearing up in case Hamas high tails it for Egypt. I bet this military action has nothing to do with Israel and everything to do with keeping Hamas bottled up inside Gaza.
